I know this is not a very helpful comment, but what should i do... Just wanted to point out that i find the art Showdown35 did beautiful.
Hopefully i'll have some time later to comment on the cards themselves :)

Sorry, it's past 1 in the morning where i live, so i'll not answer to your points in detail. I'd just like to point out that if we were to price cards according to the best possible cases, Chancellor should cost 7$.* Also you would need lots and lots of Villages to do a really strong combo with this card, which is not something that will happen just so. Talking of Courtyard, why doesn't that one cost 5$? It's actually better than Smithy quite some times.

I can't really claim to have come up with the idea all by myself. I just tried to simplify what LastFootnote suggested. Still, if that's okay for everyone, i would gladly think of a name for it :)
I can't decide today, though. The idea of a character (or anything) that travels between Villages seems nice to me, but for now, River sounds fine. If it becomes the one name associated with it until then, i guess i'm just out of luck naming it ;)

*Feel free to quote me out of context with this

Let's call the card River, just so that it has a name. It is definitely a smithy variant, not a moat variant, as it is a terminal card that increases your handsize by two, not one. If you are not cashing on the fact that it goes back to your hand, it is indeed a moat, but then again you are not using the main strength of the card...

You are absolutely right that River is not a smithy-with-a-bonus the way margrave or journeyman are. But in a draw-your-deck-engine, River does the job Smithy does, only better, for two different reasons:
-once you have it in your hand, it is more reliable than smithy, since now you only need to draw your villages to keep going;
-in the best of cases, you only ever need to buy one, which means you can spend your buys elsewhere.

The only thing you need to draw your deck with River is one or two Rivers, a way to get a River to hand (topdeck, sifters, etc.), and villages. Compare to other smithy variants, where you need roughly as many smithies as villages (and nowadays most smithies cost $5, not $4!), and you need to keep colliding both as you draw your deck.

Nothing beats playtesting, maybe it works at $4, but back-of-napking considerations make me think that this is a smithy-with-a-bonus for engines, so $5.

I'm too in favour of playtests for this one, as just disagreeing won't persuade you or me. Anyhow, i feel River is a nice name, though it sounds a bit like a Victory card. I was thinking of something Village related, like Villager or Major. Also Hydrad (edit: and qmech) raise a good point with how you need to balance "too many" and "too few".

I was thinking "You may spend an Action. If you do, play this again." It would be similar to Convoy, but different. You could only activate it with villages on the board, but you could usually use it more often in games with villages.

How about:

+2 Cards
Return this to your hand.

I know it's not exactly the same, but it avoids the need of a new concept.

Yes, that is even better.

It's an elegant solution, but I think there are some kingdoms where this card is just "draw the rest of your deck."

It's basically a smithy that is guaranteed to draw a smithy (even if you don't have any left in your deck). 5$ seems like a reasonable starting price for a smithy-with-a-bonus. It's crazy with any way to topdeck it for your next turn (scheme is the obvious, but having two of them and a mandarin/courtyard also works), but otherwise I would guess it's fine?

I'm not sure whether i'd call a Smithy that always draws a terminal "Smithy with a bonus". Whenever you are short on actions, this card is Moat. The more terminals (including this card itself) you have, the weaker the bonus of the card gets. This goes especially for the card itself - any copy after the first you draw during your turn is essentially a wasted draw. No doubt it can get strong with many actions, but you have to work for that by making sure you can connect them - without buying overly many.

I'd actually try it at 3$. Maybe it's 4$, which i'm not convinced of, but it certainly isn't a 5$.

Edit: Thinking about it, 3$ really seems the right price to me. You don't want to double-open with this, anyway. It needs support. It's not strictly better than any 3$. And i'm pretty sure it's power level is lower than you think. What costing it at 4$ or more does, though, is preventing any opening with most Village variants. I think that would be a shame.

Would a TR or KC lose track of it once it's returned to hand?

You can also Throne Room Feast. So they would lose track like Procession does, but that doesn't really matter.

This card as is is amazing for Big Money.  I think a better way to do it would be

Action $3
+2 Cards
You may spend an action.  If you do, +2 Cards.

This makes it not totally useless without the action, but still makes you need that action.

And if you do that, it's just way more interesting to use LF's Activation concept.

You are too kind. However, I was thinking "You may spend an Action. If you do, play this again." It would be similar to Convoy, but different. You could only activate it with villages on the board, but you could usually use it more often in games with villages.

How about:

+2 Cards
Return this to your hand.

I know it's not exactly the same, but it avoids the need of a new concept.

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: "Gain a card"
« on: November 21, 2014, 09:32:40 am »
The main problem i see with a card that says "Gain a card" without a condition/restriction depending on what you gain is that if you can't really balance it. If you, let's say, balance it for Province games, it will be too strong in Colony games. When balanced for Colony games, it will be bad when Colonies are missing.

+1 Card
+1 Action
+$1
This turn, optional abilities are mandatory.

But what if i reveal King's Court with Golem and don't want to use it? ;)

(you can tell what expansion I'm working on in my program)
1. All Durations other than Haven, Tactician, and Outpost under any circumstances stay out, right?

Unless someone plays a scheme and chooses to put it on top of their deck

Scheme does not affect how long a Duration card remains in play.

Oh, right, Scheme can't choose first-turn durations.  I forgot about that.

Oh I didn't know that. Ineteresting

Technically you can choose a first-turn Duration, but it's a bad idea because nothing happens if you do.

Edge Case Challenge: Find a reason why you would do this.

That's easy. You don't want to scheme any card, because anything else would be worse than a new 5 cards. You don't want the Scheme again because your opponent is heavy on Militia, so a contrip hurts with knowing what to discard.

But Scheme is a "may", not a "must". You can always choose to scheme nothing. I can't imagine any scenario where scheming a first-turn duration is different from scheming nothing at all,

I agree. There's the obvious cases where you want to topdeck a Tactician or Haven that failed to do it's share this turn, but when talking about Durations that would actually stay out, i see absolutely nothing.

That also means I can sometimes go for more interesting strategies, if I think they'll do better faster.

There's only one card that forces you to play an uninteresting strategy, and it's not Gardens.

Huh? There's no card that forces you to play an uninteresting strategy, much less so in the base game.

EDIT: Rebuild games are interesting and the card doesn't force you to go for it.

I agree that there is no such card in the base game, but i tend to disagree on Rebuild. Of course Rebuild doesn't physically force my hand to take it, put it in my discard pile and put it in play whenever i have it in hand. Still, the sheer power level of Rebuild makes it unreasonable to not go for it on 90% of the boards it appears on, at least if you want to win. Assuming that i don't want to lose whenever Rebuild is on the board, it does very well force me to go for it.

I see how Rebuild games may have a certain appeal where the challenge is how to support Rebuild best, but that feels like a variant with a reduced kingdom. So i guess Rebuild games are not boring by themselves, they just offer much fewer options than any normal game of Dominion. It's like playing a 5-card kingdom (which i might try out rather than Rebuild. At least you can chose your central tactic yourself, there).

Very old joke from the awesome "song parodies" thread (changed the lyrics a bit):

Fairgrounds rush song (Pokémon main theme).

I'm gonna play my Tournament,
i don't care 'bout your hand.
I just want a prize so bad.
And if it's Diadem.

So let's go see Black Market now.
and buy some worthless junk.
My different cards are fourty-six.
No close to being enough.

Fairgrounds rush!
Ohh - my deck is spoiled.
For you there were Ruins sold.
Fairgrounds rush!
Ohh - you're my best bet.
My Madman i can't play.
Fairgrounds rush!
Ohh - that Curse works out.
I'll even pay 5$ for Scout.

You gain Gold, i gain threefold.
Fairgrounds rush!
Gonna gain 'em all!
Gonna gain 'em all!
Fairgrounds rush!

Poor Leo already ended the turn, though.

Next turn he possesses him, he can still gain two 5 $s, de-prince the Schemes and discard the Fortresses.

I guess that makes you my nemesis.  I was a Goko apologist before it was cool.
It's still not cool.

Welcome IWB!

My statement is still accurate.

Not really. "Before it was cool" actually implies "it was cool". Assuming that's not the case, your statement is false. To be on the save side, you should have said: "I was Goko apologetic before any point in time where it is cool." Of course that also doesn't work if it was cool before you were. (Apologetic, not cool. The question of you being cool is entirely unrelated.)

Also, welcome to the forum, IWB. :)

Tennant actually does play a role in one of the Harry Potter movies, but that's not what this was about.

This is about Harry Potter and that "screwdriver" is actually the Elder Wand.

If i wasn't busy doing stuff i get paid for right now, i would dig up some webcomic strips lampshading the fact that there's no difference between sonic screwdrivers and wands, really.

:-) That makes more sense. Thanks!

Also i should add that its a fun show to watch and available in german, too. The oldest episodes predate color-tv, but you don't need to know them necessarily. You can find the newer episodes (after the show took a break and started again around 2001) on Watchever and certainly on other parts of the internet, too. If you are interested in science-fiction that's a bit over-the-top, you might like it.

Some off-the-top-of-my-head thoughts on how to mitigate this effect:

My thoughts on the same subject: play 2 player games.

If i want to play a 2 player game, i play chess. Boo all you want, i consider 3 player Dominion vastly more interesting and fun.

Wait, why wouldn't you want your opponent to prince your rats? Then I get more rats! Remake I can understand...

Because you are forced to trash a card every turn, with the chance of cards you can trash without losing something valuable sinking every turn. But okay, Remake is probably the better way to use Prince against somebody else.

Ok, too much Harry Potter and complicated english for me ;-)

eHalcyon is just poking fun at you, me, or a certain "obscure british TV show". David Tennant is actually one of the best known actors to portrait "the Doctor", main character of British TV show "Doctor Who" about a time-travelling alien, which happens to be able to change forms under certain circumstances (when close to dying), which is why said Doctor was played by many actors over time. I took one of his worst facial expressions ("Tennantface") and added the magical wand sonic screwdriver, item of the Dr's choice. Also the British take great pride in the show, which is extremely long running (not without a break, though) and even got some stamps with motives from it printed.

Tennant actually does play a role in one of the Harry Potter movies, but that's not what this was about.
