Puzzles and Challenges / Re: Gain and play
« on: January 09, 2014, 01:54:42 pm »
Doesn't the puzzle stipulate that not just 2 types of cards are used, but only 2 card copies are played? All the examples mentioned above consist of multiple copies of the same card, but the valid solutions do not.

I think i just found an answer myself, from the Dark Ages Rulebook:

"...Then, when you discard Hermit from play - normally, in Clean-up, after playing it in your Action phase - if you did not buy any cards this turn, you trash Hermit and gain a Madman. The Madman comes from the Madman pile, which is not in the Supply, and is put into your discard pile. It does not matter whether or not you gained cards other ways, only whether or not you bought a card. If there are no Madman cards left, you do not gain one. If Hermit is not discarded from play during Clean-up - for example, if you put it on your deck with Scheme (from Hinterlands) - then the ability that trashes it will not trigger."

It's a little confusing though... It says that the ability doesn't trigger. Does this mean you will still get a Madman, or not? That's not specified... I guess the correct answer is that you do (I hope). That should explain the whole thing.

Donald misspoke.  When he wrote that, he was thinking of an earlier version of Scheme.  I think the past version of Scheme he had in mind functioned like Herbalist.  Note that Scheme topdecks a card when that card is discarded, whereas Herbalist topdecks a card when Herbalist is discarded.  So had Scheme worked like Herbalist, then it would have topdecked Hermit before Hermit was discarded, and so Hermit's self-trashing and Madman gaining would never trigger.
This confusion all stems from the fact that, the way it's worded, the Madman gain is conditional on discarding the Hermit rather than trashing the Hermit. This is different from the special effect of Mining Village or Fortress that is conditional on the card in question getting trashed.

Who's the author of Storyteller?  I don't think it was ever revealed in this thread or else I missed it.  I'm adding it to my list of fan-made cards that I want to playtest at some point and I make a note of the author or each card in the list.

It's me!  I have been too lazy to write up anything more about it.  For now I should just say, hooray and thanks to those who commented on the card, good or bad. :)
You made Storyteller, eHalcyon? Congratulations! I hope the others are aware of this now.

The Law of Tournament - In a game of Dominion featuring Tournament wherein both players pursue reasonable strategies one player will feel shafted regarding the luck of shuffling and/or player turn order.

If you think about your decks in terms of draw and cycling Stables cycles 3 cards while is net +1 Card in hand.  Inn cycles 2 Cards and is net -1 in hand.  However playing JoaT after in provides the same amount of cycling in addition to a net no increase in hand-size.  What's not taken into account is that the cycling affect from Inn takes place before Stables because of the on gain clause.

I'm not really sure what to make of this.  Stables is a better card in general but Inn's benefit will come faster and it's loss is mitigated somewhat by JoaT.   In a Tournament game you really want the first chance to connect Province to Tournament.  Neither of you played unreasonably and by no means were you more lucky than he was.  Imo this is simply a case where the Law of Tournament applies.
You forgot opening split. I remember this one game where I was a bit annoyed at having a 5/2 Copper split when my opponent didn't on a Tournament board with no $2's in the kingdom. But then I thought, "Hey, let me make the best of this situation. Do I open Vault or Wharf?".
Here's what ensued. I never got any prizes myself, but it didn't matter in the end.

Followers should win here since it stomps on inn, stables, vault, and even masterpiece. Any opponent can take a second jack but it isn't as good.

I would probably have taken a stables first and then considered an inn after that. I think your opponent was right to be optimistic for a province by turn 8 with stables whilst in your game the provinces came by turn 9. Also by buying inns early you risk congesting your deck with inns later if you keep buying them to top deck the followers. Regardless, first player advantage is probably bigger than any advantage from inns vs stables.
It doesn't necessarily stop Inn if you have some Jacks in your deck, although I think the opponent only had 1 Jack in the deck and had no Inns. It does hurt Stables when treasures are discarded. Looking at the log, 2 treasures did indeed have to be discarded when e played Followers.

Though I'm not sure if you were abnormally lucky, I don't see how you getting Followers even seals the game at all with Jack on the board and Inn as a village of sorts. Your opponent had more Stables than you, and could probably still get Provinces even with a 3-card hand. Without +buy on the board, you can't do much better than 1 Province a turn anyway. Okay, you can with Princess, but you didn't get that yet. Followers doesn't help too much in getting more prizes, so your opponent could still get the other prizes. In fact, Trusty Steed might be even better than Followers here due to the Silver gaining ability . 4 extra Silvers should be great for Stables BM.

Oh, I should read the board. For some reason I read WW and thought Wandering Minstrel, because AdamH (it is AdamH, isn't it?) calls them Wandering Winders. (As you spotted, I call them Winstrels.)
I also like to think of the minstrels as being Wandering Winders, but I know that the actual card shares the same acronym as Worker's Village. Seeing WW threw me off a bit and made me have to look at the board to confirm what was being referred to.

Edit: wait, Wandering Minstrel only looks like it has the same acronym as Worker's Village.

With the winstrels, you can play Salvager before the Highways - Remodel does seem almost strictly better for the purpose though, with the exception that Salvager in an empty hand still gives the +buy.
Except, in this game there were no winstrels, only cards that wish they were.

Remodel would be better once you start going mass Highway, but Salvager is probably better early on when SCSN got it. You can't remodel Estates into Highways at the start, but trashing them with Salvager can help you buy one. Still, Remodel can turn Estates into Wishing Wells, and it can also turn Coppers into Wishing Wells with just one Highway in play.

GokoDom / Re: Rebuild ban for next Gokodom?

Any news on the timing for GokoDom III Kirian ?

Not yet, no.  The best I can say is SoonTM.  The situation with Goko has gotten worse than it was a few days ago when I suggested elsewhere that "sure you can run a tournament!"  In addition, someone seems to be attempting to put together a forum championship, although it seems unlikely to happen.

If Goko stabilizes and that tournament doesn't go forward, then I'll look to start signups very soon after both of those things are determined.
SoonTM? Are you a fan of Blizzard games or something?

Yeah I don't know what's going on with the other tournament. I think response to it has been low because everyone is expecting a GokoDom III. That and I guess Goko pulling a Goko.

Goko Dominion Online / Re: Poll for what to do with Goko

Grrr! I think this is the first time were Goko has become too laggy for me to even play the adventures without the extension. In my fit of disapproval, I voted for petitioning RGG!

Personally, I'm not a fan of playing games on my phone, so I'm happy that Goko worked on making a nice desktop implementation. Did they have to work on PC/Desktop first, or even at all? Maybe not. So long as there's a working implementation for PC, I'm happy. I fear that is no longer the case.

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Cave - secret vp card
« on: January 06, 2014, 12:46:41 pm »
Almost certainly OP, Fairgrounds is worth 2/5 per unique card, but this would be easy to get up to 10VP+, and even improves your deck most of the way there. In Shelters games it gets to 5VP (including Copper and Cave) before it stops improving your deck. 2VP per 5 unique cards is probably balanced, but would seem too similar to Fairgrounds even if it played very differently.

The Cornucopia cards which reward variety are interesting because normally, decks with a bit of everything aren't very good. This card lets you hide what you don't want on your mat, so you aren't ruining your deck by buying that Counting House or Transmute.
Oh right, shelters. So then I have to go back to my initial instinct that this is undercosted. The real issue is whether or not the optimal strategy for using Cave will always be the monolithic one of only buying Caves and fodder for Caves. Edit: Or perhaps it's simply a must buy, even if you're just getting them to deny your opponent. No other Alt-VP card is a must buy.

Goko Dominion Online / Re: Petition for the return of Isotropic

Asking someone to do something for you because it's what you want isn't going to go anywhere.

However, asking someone to do something for you because it's in their economic interest is much more likely to get their attention.  If you can gather a large enough mass of people who say "I would be willing to pay $x for Isotropic if it came back", arranging the deal between RGG, DXV, dougz, and Goko, has a lot more potential.  Goko isn't making much money right now, but maybe they could be if they had some of the income from a paid Isotropic.  I have literally no idea how much money/how many people would need to agree to make that kind of deal (or whether it's politically possible anyway), but I think the next step would be do put up a poll asking people at f.ds how much they would be willing to pay for Iso if it were brought back.  If RGG/Goko see that people are willing to give them money to bring back Iso, and dougz gets a share of the profit from it, I think everyone comes out ahead.

Of course, that's all assuming that enough people would be willing to pay for Iso, presumably in addition to what they have already paid for Goko.  Again, I have no idea whether that's even reasonably within reach.
What if DougZ refuses to take our money? Seriously, he made Isotropic with the intention that it would be free and he might object to taking money from it. Sounds strange, but people can be like that (or is it just me). Someone would need to be prepared to take over Iso Dominion if it became a paid venture.

I don't expect Iso Dominion to return, or at least not in its current form. it would be cool if it did, but the cahnces look really bleak right now. That said, the threat of the official online implementation becoming non-functional appears very real now. Naturally, we should be voicing our concerns and dissatisfaction with such a scenario. If that results in a better product in the end, then yay!

I would also say it's worth testing out, and I like that you've made it cost $5. It shouldn't cost any less than that.

This card reminds me a lot of Bishop. With Bishop, you might find yourself trashing Coppers, Estates, and Curses early game, getting at least 1 VP on each play. Now, Cave, will average out to less than 1VP on each play. A big difference between Bishop and Cave is that, once you acquire some VP, you can multiply your VP score by buying more Caves. With 2 or more Caves, you can probably make it worth 6VP quickly enough, but at the cost of a lot of used up actions and some decent to good cards from your deck. Pseudo-trashing is good, but at least Duchy doesn't need you to play it at least 3 times to make it worth 3VP.

So yeah, I think this can work after all. Nice to know you've tried it out a bit.

So is TotalBiscuit the new Goko apologist?

Hi.

I am a professional game critic, as in, it's my job to critique games and in this episode I had a look at Dominion. I criticized numerous elements of the online implementation however the bulk of the video focussed on Dominion as a game and explanatory content based on that, with a focus on introducing Dominion to a wider audience. I have no prior relations with Goko and no interest in the Dominion "community" as a whole. It was one video in a series which has so far covered over 500 different games and covers several new ones every week. Any internal issues that this particular Dominion community has with Goko are none of my concern.

Best Regards.

Welcome, however briefly, to the forum!  It's good to know that Dominion (and board gaming in general) is also held in high regard by video gamers.

I'm still entirely uncertain where Watno's comment comes from, other than left field.

I wouldn't read into Watno's comment too deeply. I think it's a throwback of this post back in the Goko > Iso thread:

I came to this thread expecting it to be a joke.  I was disappointed when the OP was serious :/

I've barely read this forum in 6 months and even I know wero is and has been the biggest goko apologist for, like, forever.

Oops, missed the voting deadline.

At the time of writing this post, SCSN had over 4000 pro games played on Goko according to drunkensailor stats, so he definitely gave Goko a shot.

I don't think we should pressure DougZ to reopen iso Dominion unless Goko actually announces a prolonged or permanent shutdown. It would likely break whatever gentleman's agreement he's made with RGG and Donald X., or at least go against his code of ethics. Even if Goko does shut down, there's no guarantee he'd be willing to put the site back up.

Having a community maintained Online Implementation waiting in the wings sounds like it could be a neat idea (personally, I doubt that I have enough experience with web applications to contribute meaningfully to such a project).

Another thing that just came into mind is that this card could possibly make a Mint opening viable (Mint/Redistrict on 5/2 opening).

In answer to your actual question, Mint/Redistrict could be amazing. Imagine a deck of KC/Goons/Copper/Copper/Estate/Estate/Estate after turn 3. Buy another Redistrict and you'll have those Estates gone by turn 5.
Woah, I mixed up Redistrict with Davio's VP token card that's being discussed right now. Yeah, the situation you describe would be pretty awesome. You can even KC the Redistrict.

I 've been trying to find whether a Mint opening would ever be viable. I haven't found of any case where this could happen, but i think this card might just be that case.
I think the free Baker token adds a lot of plausible options for Mint openings. Off the top of my head, I'm thinking Hermit.

Without Baker, there is probably only one Mint opening you need to know about: Mint/Fool's Gold.

I don't want to have to overspend to buy the last promo.

...The one dollar?
The one dollar. It's just going to be mocking me for as long as I play Dominion online on Goko, and maybe even longer than that. And for what, Stash? I'm holding out for the Guilds adventure to see if I can pay with shields.

Unfortunately, the Guilds adventure cannot be seen on the horizon. It may never arrive at all. It's just, I'm not completist enough to get Stash.

I'm curious: how good is the interface for Stash? On that note, I like the Black Market interface, and I'm glad I got it when I did.

Why i would split up America in North/Middle and South?

I want that there are players from Argentinia and Brasil, too, and not only from Canada and USA
Somehow, I don't think Canadian players will be filing many slots in the bracket at all, based on their turnout of the Dominion Team World Cup. Maybe because the Canadian population is only about 1/9th the American population?

I don't know. I don't see why it's necessary to go through all the trouble of balancing out preliminary brackets for all the continents. On the other hand, I can't think of a good reason why there shouldn't be such divisions. I guess it makes some sense because they'd be from the 65th-128th best players in the tourney?

I didn't play for Canada because it was the middle of term for me. Now I'm on break for a while and I have some time to play in this.
So was I. In hindsight, that did actually cause problems for me. Hopefully, if this happens it will be at a time where you're free.

Yeah. Even start of term is OK.
Start of term is best case scenario for me, as I start my next semester on Monday. At any rate, I'll be keeping up with any news of Dominion tournaments.

Yeah with Goons decks, you typically want to make your deck as trim (read:as few treasures) as possible, while still being able to buy Goons pretty early.I'd I think about getting a second Silver, but not more than that.  Menagerie's are especially key for draw when you expect your opponent to reduce your hand size to 3 every turn.

Peddler->Platinum is okay as it lets you buy Colonies, but the Platinums may reduce the number of Goons you can get into play, which is actually a big deal. Here, you'd save Peddler->Platinum for when you're forced to play Remake with Herald and have nothing better to trash.

Anyway, welcome to the forum!

Not only 1 card available, all 10? Then, probably Chapel down, building a big Goons turn (or KC-bridge?) and possibly Quarry for a quick Goons?

also, beware of the pin...

EDIT:  Yes, Ambassador over Chapel, of course
Yeah, I'd also be looking for a Goons deck. I'm wondering whether I want Labs, Stables, or Minions though. Minions work well with all the cheap disappearing actions you can get(Fishing village, Hamlet, Lighthouse, etc...). Then again, an Ironworks/Silk Road rush would be nuts. Maybe heavy Bishop can do something about that? Another opening to consider is Chapel/Ironworks, but I'm not sure what the optimal strategy is with that opening.

You know what becomes a power card in this setup? Develop. Okay, so it's forced to get Poor Houses if you trash $0 costs or $2 costs, but it's beastly at the higher price points. Band of Misfits is nuts too.

Goko Dominion Online / Re: Goko > Iso

Wasn't the OP posted when Goko was at its prime? Goko was slowly getting better for awhile. There was even a point where I felt it was a few features away from really competing with Iso for best online implementation of Dominion. I mean, look at the pretty pictures of the cards! Really (okay, the extension helped too). I've always considered myself lucky that Goko would behave better for me than many other users.

Then I don't know what happened. See the "It gets Worse" thread. It still works fine for me, but I worry that the mist surrounding the area of the adventure map where the Guilds adventure should be will never be lifted. That's an extra Promo card I think. I don't want to have to overspend to buy the last promo.
