Dominion: Nocturne Previews / Re: Nocturne Teasers Speculation
« on: October 27, 2017, 05:54:52 pm »
So, with Bats and Zombies, other than the two Heirlooms we haven't seen, the only things to come are ordinary Kingdom piles?

Barring unusual pile counts, we have 10 kingdom card piles of:

Bard
Changeling
Cobbler
Conclave
Den of Sin
Guardian
Monastery
Night Watchman
Sacred Grove
Secret Cave
Tormentor
Tracker
Tragic Hero

So what type of card do you think each of these kingdom cards are?

Bard – ACTION/HEIRLOOM (Since Minstrel was a village, why not Bard?)
Changeling - NIGHT
Cobbler – ACTION/HEIRLOOM
Conclave - FATE
Den of Sin – DOOM (A Den of Sin would have to give out Greed, Envy, Poverty, etc.)
Guardian – DOOM (but helps to mitigate the effect of a hex)
Monastery – FATE (A trasher)
Night Watchman – NIGHT (Reaction?) –Doesn’t seem like there would be 2 reactions in a set.
Sacred Grove – DOOM (could be trouble if you enter into somewhere held sacred by the Druids)
(Conversely, could be FATE since it is somewhere the Druids would assemble)
Secret Cave – NIGHT (Everybody’s in the dark in a cave, especially if it is secret)
Tormentor – DOOM
Tracker – NIGHT?
Tragic Hero – DOOM (He was a hero, but he gave in to sin and other vices.)

Everyone's favorite rules question: If these kingdom cards are in the Black Market deck, are the Heirlooms used?
I recommend not putting them in the Black Market deck, but yes, you do all setup for Black Market deck cards.

Do you have a suggestion for how to avoid this if one is using one copy of each (regular back) card as randomizers and then the randomizer deck as the Black Market deck?

I use the randomizers for my Black Market deck. I just grab a bunch of them mixed together. However, before I set them out for the game, I look through them and pull out cards that are going to need extra tokens or chits that are not already in the game due to the other kingdom cards or Events. Then I just shuffle what's left and we are ready to go.  I will probably do the same with any heirloom cards that I see.

Dominion: Nocturne Previews / Re: Bonus Preview #2: Faithful Hound
« on: October 24, 2017, 11:13:29 am »
I don't really mind the choice in dog, but I can think of so many better ways to portray a faithful hound than in a forest with leaves falling to the ground around him.  First of all, since when do leaves fall in nice tidy piles for you?  They usually would blanket the ground.  And the 3 leaves falling next to the center tree trunk look like they are attached to the trunk in some weird way.  So I would give it a 7 for the dog, but 1 for the rest of the scene.

My idea of portraying a faithful hound would be showing him at the feet of his master lying down by a fireplace.  I guess the problem would be that if you are going to have your faithful hound go fetch something for you, you might prefer him to be alert and ready to go as seen on the card.  On the other hand, since he first gets set aside, to picture him lying down and waiting for the next command from his master could be appropriate.

(When I clicked the Preview button to make sure my post looked OK, I noticed that it said "fetching preview".  How appropriate!  :D)

Religious buildings, persons, and paraphernalia have often been associated with trashing - for example: Chapel, Bishop, Altar, Sacrifice, Temple. So I definitely think that Monastery is some kind of trasher.  Sacred Grove and Druid could also have a connection with trashing.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Dominion Strategy Blog Returns!
« on: September 22, 2017, 10:59:10 pm »
I am so happy to see the blog returning. That is where I first learned about Dominion. I was looking at possibly buying the game  Learning about the various cards and strategies there got me enthused about it.  Then I bought base and Prosperity together, and my wife and I have been hooked ever since. We have thoroughly enjoyed every expansion and new concept that has come along. It has been a great ride.  I was just checking out the new articles.  Please keep it coming!

And I agree about the idea of changing the release schedule. Just having a nice consistent flow of information is great. When Theory used to be so involved with the blog, even if we got one article in a week, it was still great to have. So to have something posted 3 days per week is plenty. I think if you get too much, it becomes overwhelming, especially for inexperienced players. All of that information just swims together on your head and becomes muddled. There is nothing wrong with giving us time to chew on it a little before posting a new article or video.

Dominion: Nocturne Previews / Re: Dominion: Nocturne announced!
« on: August 14, 2017, 10:37:30 pm »
I have not been looking at the forum for a couple of months.  I was so happy to see the announcement of a new expansion.  Fortunately, I just changed my storage to allow for the possibility that "some day" there might be another expansion.  What I had was filled comfortably, but I no longer had the room to set up my next deck for playing ahead of time.  (I just shuffle the randomizers and then start going through them 10 at a time [unless bane]).  When I put the cards away from a game, I use the next 10 randomizers to set up the deck for our next play along with whatever other cards (ruins, spoils, etc.) are needed.  That way I can quickly pull out the cards when we want to play and we can get started without much wait.

I was afraid that 10 expansions might have stretched the limits, though I was completely open to new ideas if DXV was.  So I am glad I decided to prepare for the possibility.  I am ecstatic that we are getting a new expansion so soon.  Thank you, Donald!

As I read through all of your ideas on Night cards, Heirlooms, etc., I had this image in my mind of Donald X sitting there and reading these posts and laughing at our speculations.  It seems with every expansion there are lots of suggestions on what the new things are, but when previews arrive, we are blown away by what he has done that doesn't even fit what we had been conceiving.  Of course, there is probably at least one suggestion in this thread that is pretty close, but which one?  I have to admit, it's very good of us to provide Donald with some amusement.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Rules mess ups you've seen?
« on: April 02, 2017, 09:29:49 pm »
I've dealt with most of the things people have mentioned already.

No, you can't shuffle yet.

No, don't discard that yet.

No, seriously, don't discard that yet.

You have to put that into play.

No, into play over there.

YOU CAN'T SHUFFLE YET

Wait, come back, I swear this game is so much fun!

I just read this to my wife and she and I both got a good laugh out of it. It is so true. ;D

Is Haunted Woods really that much better than Swamp Hag?  Obviously, it's attack is better later in the game than Swamp Hag because curses will have run out, but 9 points better?

Also, of the next 14 cards behind it in the list, I would rank at least 1/2 of them ahead of Haunted Woods, including Rabble.  I would think Rabble has about as good a chance of hurting your opponent as Haunted Woods, and it gives you the immediate draw rather than waiting. Also, your opponent can just not buy cards that turn and avoid the attack, but unless you have a Moat in hand or have Lighthouse out, Rabble will always at least possibly make you discard a payload card you wanted to draw.  If there is something I am not appreciating about it that makes Haunted Woods significantly better, I would appreciate the insight.

In the very first game I played with Lurker, I got Apprentice out of the Black Market deck. This ended up being a cool combo, since I could trash my expensive actions for big card draw, and get them back later that turn. I had a few Artisans, which was great for a 6-card draw.

That game made me think that Lurker should probably be in the top 5 or 7 $2 cards.

Apprentice / Lurker may be a legitimate combo, even more so than most trash-for-benefit + Lurker combos. That just seems super powerful, and completely nonterminal at that.

My wife and I had an IRL game with Apprentice and Lurker in it.  We also had Explorer in the game, which is a card I rarely buy.  In addition, we had Obelisk.  We chose randomly from the randomizer cards and chose Explorer as the Obelisk card.  Explorers worked great as food for Apprentice and Lurker put it right back in our hands.  We had Villa in the layout also and a lot of cantrips.  So it never gummed up our decks and even gave us points at the end of the game.  The silvers and golds generated by Explorer were also available to sacrifice to Apprentice.  That was my first game with Lurker.  It is an excellent addition to the Base game, and it certainly feels like a top 5 $2 card.

I was unable to check out the forum this week. So I just was able to look over the village discussion. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the Walled Village vs. Farming Village question.

However, this discussion did bring up another question for me. When did we start calling villages "splitters" and why?  They give you an extra turn, but what exactly are they splitting?

63
It's nice that Walled Village is now at least somewhat closer to the other $4 splitters. It's a shame that it isn't higher than Farming Village.

Just trying to understand: Why do you feel that Walled Village is better than Farming Village?  Any engine would much rather have Farming Village than Walled Village, wouldn't it?  Unless I am totally missing something, Walled Village becomes nothing more than a $4 Village in an engine, but Farming Village helps you get through the junk and get to your actions to feed your engine.

Generally, Farming Village and Walled Village are both just vanilla Villages for $4. However, in the rare case where the ability actually does something, Farming Village just skips over one green card that probably wouldn't have made any difference anyway, whereas Walled Village might save you from an entire shuffle's worth of dead turns.
Farming Village skips over n green cards, where n is the number of green cards on top of your deck. This may well be one, but it may well be more than one. (Consider the not-entirely-uncommon case where your opponent is building a Rabble engine.)
But by far the most likely scenario is that it is 0.

I agree that there are better villages than either of these, but I still don't get it. If I play either Walled Village or Farming Village, then if the card I draw is an action or treasure, they both will allow me to put it in my hand. But if I draw a victory card or curse, other than minimal cycling, I have gained nothing really from WV, while with FV I get to discard it and draw again until I get that action or treasure.  The ability that WV gives to top deck it is great earlier in the game, but the most likely scenario for it being activated late in the game is just as much 0 as FV not skipping green if you are running any kind of decent engine.

I enjoy learning from all of you, but I am having trouble seeing this one. I have looked back at some earlier posts comparing villages. Everything I find always ranks FV higher than WV. In fact, WV is usually considered a low tier village.

IRL: about 800
Iso: 3
Goko/MF: a few games against the AI

(When I tried Isotropic, I had a bad experience.  That turned me off towards online play.  And after buying the base game and all of the expansions and promos, I couldn't see spending more money just to play online on Goko.  And I know I wouldn't be happy just playing base Dominion online.)

I can't believe Storeroom is so low.  I would buy it before any of the 5 cards ranked above it other than possibly Shanty Town.  It should at least be in the mid to late 20's.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Dominion and Intrigue second editions
« on: October 15, 2016, 04:26:38 pm »
Thanks to Qvist for the review of the new cards.  Very informative.  When compared with your thoughts on the old cards, it looks like Donald has come up with some excellent upgrades over the previous editions.

I really look forward to playing with these.  I always play IRL.  So I plan to keep my discontinued cards and still have them in my randomizer deck for future use, except possibly Saboteur.  I really did not like that card.  And for some reason, though my wife loves the card, I have always hated Tribute.  It just felt too much to me like an attack that I couldn't react to or prevent in any way. However, since she likes it, I will probably keep it in the rotation.  After all, it takes a long time to go through the full deck of randomizers.  So seeing it once every few months isn't that big of an issue.

Also the new Promo looks great.  I would imagine that it will eventually be available on BGG like the others.  Does anyone know if that is definitely true?

Thanks so much. I found it to be very informative. We haven't played with it yet, but I look forward to testing it out.

I'm starting to disagree a lot with your rankings :P. The last few cards you ranked DEFIENETLY deserve to be way higher. Where is Junk Dealer? That art is miles worse than anything in group X. IMO you should judge more about the quality of the art itself.

I would like to take this opportunity to post some notes about the process as I view it now that we are a few groups in.

The 'your' in the rankings is a plural you. I've found that if anyone one of the four of us really liked or disliked a piece of art comparative to the others, it would seriously skew the group it ended up in. That was somewhat by design. However, as we are going through the groups, I can't sometimes get coherent comments about why a piece of art was liked more or less than other pieces of art. It's possible as we ground through all these cards rating them one by one, that not all of the art got equal consideration or that view of one card might be affected by what other cards are near it alphabetically.

I see that the cards that are at the bottom of any particular group are usually the worst cards in that group and that as we approach the end of the group, we are getting some cards that seem to have been skewed by one or two unusual evaluations. There are some things, in retrospect, I could have done to mitigate the issue. However, it would have been time consuming. I currently am having a hard enough time getting my daughters together to comment and put in order 15 cards at a time. I don't think they would have been willing to spend more time on it for better rankings. Also, now that I have ranked some of the cards on my method, I feel I ought to see it through without changing the rules in the middle.

Disagreement is a natural result of this type of effort. I can tell you from what I have seen about where cards are falling in the groups, it's going to get worse before it gets better.

As I have mentioned in earlier posts, I personally do not agree with all of the card choices. The fact is though that as jamfamsam states: "Disagreement is a natural result of this type of effort." This thread was not presented as being the judgment of professional art critics. It is a man and 3 teenage daughters spending some time together making a list of which card's art they like and which they don't. To take over 350 images and put them in some kind of order of preference is quite a daunting task. Any of us who are no longer teenagers certainly realize that our tastes as adults differ from when we were teens. On top of that, the fact that people will pay thousands of dollars for artworks that many others wouldn't even want to hang in their bathrooms shows how greatly opinions on art can differ. These girls are taking time from other things that I am sure they would prefer to be doing. So if some of their decisions seem haphazard to us, I think it is perfectly understandable.

All of us have the right to our opinions, and if you read this forum at all, we have no problem expressing them. In this case, though, I don't believe these girls have the same vested interest in this game as most of us do. They are just doing this for fun.  I would imagine that for most of us, our own opinions of the art have been affected to some extent by our view of the functionality of the card from having played it many times.  For example, I know my view of the art of Fairgrounds is definitely influenced by my love for the card in the game.

We therefore should all feel free to express our opinions, but it should be done with civility, perhaps a sense of humor, but never attacking.  As mentioned above there is a long way to go and the likelihood of disagreement is going to become much greater.  If you really don't like the criteria by which they are judging these cards, then start your own thread and see how many people agree with your opinions. Otherwise, let's just be sure to keep it light and fun.  If we don't, this could quickly be derailed. I personally would like to see this go all the way to number 1.

Thank you jamfamsam and your daughters for taking time to do this and providing an opportunity for interesting discussion.

Have you seen the hi-res version of Junk Dealer?  It is so much better than I thought from just looking at the card.

I have to agree with all of your choices so far in Group X, other than I think there were a few in groups Y and Z that are better than these.

Butcher - This guy has always been really creepy to me.  I wouldn't want that man, or whatever it is, anywhere near my meat.  It looks like he escaped from a lunatic asylum where they did a lobotomy.  And who cuts up their meat with the feet of the animal hanging on a wall and the other end on a table?

Gladiator - Ditto

Smithy - JSH nailed that one quite well.  The guy holding the axehead must be crazy to hold that thing while the other guy pounds on it.  In fact, if he trying to hammer a wedge into the handle in the head of the axe, the wedge doesn't look like it is being put in straight, almost guaranteeing that the axe is going slip in some way.

Mandarin - I have never liked that one.  His face is very misshapen.  His mustache is very long on one side.  Why is he unrolling scrolls all over the ground?  What does that have to do with Mandarin?  Dictionary.com has several definitions, including:
1. (in the Chinese Empire) a member of any of the nine ranks of public officials, each distinguished by a particular kind of button worn on the cap;
6. an influential or powerful government official or bureaucrat;
7. a member of an elite or powerful group or class, as in intellectual or cultural milieus
The other 4 definitions don't apply at all, but this picture doesn't seem to fit any of the definitions.

Envoy - That has to be the most unflattering facial expression in Dominion.  This guy is the last person I would want representing me as an Envoy for my country or government.  And why is his letter or scroll wrapped around the handle of a baseball bat?

74
#349 - Count

This is the beginning of group X, 13 cards.

I always assumed the guy on the left was the Count but when my daughters asked me, I wasn't so sure.

Chancellor Palpatine, post-electric shock from Mace Windu, makes an appearance. Either that or Norman Bates pulls out his deceased mother from the backroom. Those are some seriously big hands, particularly the finger.

These two talk while the world burns outside.

I always thought that it was the good Count on one side and the bad Count on the other.  He is holding up his finger to say that you have to choose one.  That being said, I agree about your judgment on the artistic value of the card.

75
I ordered my copy from Miniature Market. Since last weekend, my order had the status of "Pending Release".  Tuesday I called them to ask what that meant. They had not yet received their copies. So it meant they would release it for shipment after they got their copies some time this week. On Wednesday or Thursday, they finally received their copies.  The status has now been changed to shipped.  It's only a 5 hour drive between St. Louis and Lexington, but I didn't receive it today. Hopefully I will get it by Monday.
