Even if you don't want all cards from Populate, it has some extreme potential synergies (don't know how many of these will actually be good in a given game, though): gardens, vineyards, and philosopher's stone come to mind. Like mxdata said, watchtower in hand is actually really good, too.

It also makes it much easier to grab cards you need to increase the value of your Fairgrounds late in the game.

I like that this expansion is adding new things, but still keeping it relatively straightforward, like Renaissance did.  You can jump on your horse and take a quick ride, and then just put it back in the stable.  Or you can exile those delinquents to the “ex-isle” (love that one, pubby), and after they have been sufficiently humbled and disciplined, you can invite them back to your dominion to add some winning value.

I am looking forward to using Bounty Hunter on a kingdom with Fairgrounds and lots of stuff, like Ruins, that are great for variety, but a pain to have in your deck during play.

Thanks again, Donald. This has been a great week so far.

So kiln does not interact with wish...is that because it is not in the supply or (the lose track rule)?

it's because wishes are not in the supply

I am trying to understand why Wish won't work. Kiln says you gain a copy of the next card that you play that turn. It doesn't say anything about that card having to be from the supply or having to remain in the play area. So if you play Wish, even though it leaves the play area to go back to its pile, doesn't it still count as having been played after Kiln, and therefore you would be able to gain a new Wish?

Any time a card tells you to gain a card, it automatically means from the supply, unless it is telling you to gain it from a specific place (like "from the Wish pile", or if it is telling you to gain a specifically named card (as of the recent errata, simply "Gain a Wish" would work because it names "Wish" specifically". But for any other instruction to gain a card, the card you gain must be in the supply.
It's actually slightly trickier; "gain a Duchy" on Count won't gain a Duchy you left in the box because you only had 2 players. But yes. By default you only gain from the Supply, for Workshop etc.; cards that specifically gain non-supply cards can gain them, even by just saying "gain a Wish."

Thank you for all of the responses.  I appreciate the clarification about gaining.

So excited to have previews of a new expansion.  When these happen, it is always a highlight of my year.

I showed my wife the cards and she really liked the sheepdog picture.

I really love how these take old concepts and add a nice little twist to them to keep you thinking and make you possibly reevaluate the normal choices you would make on a board.

Thanks again, Donald.  This is a fantastic game!

Will someone be creating a Menagerie Previews section like we have done in the past for other expansions?

This sounds fantastic. I cannot wait. Early March will now be reserved for not just March Madness, but also for Dominion: Menagerie previews. Thank you so much, Donald and Jay, for continuing to feed our hunger for more Dominion.

In case anyone is looking to buy either Dark Ages or Alchemy, Miniature Market is having a big sale, and these expansions are included in it. Alchemy is $17.00 and Dark Ages is $25.50.

"Saving" just is a flag that tells me to count your list. It doesn't actually save anything.
So you "save" when you are done with the lists.

Not sure why copying did not work, sorry

Thanks for the explanation. As far as the list not saving, well, that’s life in the fast food lane.

Just a couple of questions to make sure I am doing this correctly:

1) Do I save only after completing all levels of card costs, or do I save it after completing each level?

2) I tried using rate mode. After numbering all of my $0-2 cards, I tried to use the “copy rate list to compare/order list” link. However, nothing copied over to the compare list. Do I have to save the rate list first before I copy it to the compare list if I want to use the compare list to fine tune my choices?

Thanks, Donald. You just gave me another great week of waking up excited to see what’s new. I know there are limits to how far you will go with this game, but you could keep having a preview week every year, and you certainly wouldn’t get a complaint from me.

My wife and I wish to thank you for creating and expanding this wonderful game. I have many games in my collection, but none of them puts a smile on my wife’s face like Dominion does when I ask her if she wants to play a certain game. Since we discovered Dominion 9 years ago, for us there has been Dominion and then a bunch of other games that we play for a change of pace or different kind of challenge.

I had been afraid Nocturne was the end; Night had fallen on Dominion. Thanks for conquering the Dark Ages and bringing a Renaissance to Dominion.

If you already have the Key, and you play Treasurer — and you have nothing in your hand that you want to trash, and only Coppers in the trash pile — you can still “take” the Key, even though you technically never lost it (whether in the Woods, or elsewhere), right?

I only ask because Fool states “If you do not have Lost in the Woods, you take it”.  Now obviously that would be way too much text to adapt it for this card, but since you must do one of the three things, since you already have it, can you “take” it, or do you have to do one of the other two options?

It's a "choose one" type ability, which means that you can choose an option that you can't do, and then fail to do it.

That makes sense. Thanks.

I realize that the attack effect of Villain is weak, but we have other attacks that are also weak and still have their uses, such as Cutpurse. A lot of people, such as my wife, are not big fans of the stronger attacks. This one I think they will like because it is an attack that will sometimes hurt, but not be too mean. And, of course, you also get the 2 coffers.

I play predominantly IRL with more casual gamers who don’t like a lot of “take that”. For us, I think it will be a card that will not be the most popular card on the board, but having those 2 coffers when you need them to push your money up enough to buy a Province or Colony where you drew a lot of green will be useful. And you get a little bit of an attack that could mess up someone’s hand at a critical time.

I think it’s biggest weakness will be its price point. There are likely to be too many other 5’s in the game that are more attractive. For the casual gamers and those with less experience with Dominion, I think this is going to be a great expansion to introduce to them right away.

Just took a quick look after a couple of weeks away to see if anything new, and I was shocked!  I really was afraid that Nocturne was going to be last set besides maybe a few promos along the way.  So here of a whole new set with 25 kingdom cards and new things to learn and play with sounds just too good to be true.

Thank you so much Donald X and Rio Grande.  I will be eagerly awaiting the previews and being able to pick this up.

What a great surprise. And I love the theme, too.  I am hoping that there is definitely going to be a card called "Painter" or "Artist" and/or "Sculptor", perhaps "Painting" and/or "Sculpture" also.  "Leeches" would be an interesting name for an attack card. And a thinner named "Barber" would just seem to be a perfect complement to "Butcher".

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Favorite Expansions in 2018
« on: May 14, 2018, 05:35:35 pm »
1) Prosperity — My first expansion I bought. So it is a sentimental favorite, but my wife and I also love Colonies and Platinums. We use them whenever we can in our games.  It was the first to use victory tokens and has several cards that are real game changers in most any kingdom.

2) Cornucopia — I really love 10 of the 13 cards and consider them must buys pretty much any time they appear. 2 of the other 3 are frequently useful. Those are pretty amazing odds.

3) Adventures — Introduced Travelers, Reserve cards, and Events, along with the return of Durations.  A great expansion. I understand why many have it as their #1.

4) Dark Ages — Love the trashing theme. Many cards that I love. Introduces Ruins and Shelters. Also takes the use of non-supply piles to a new level.

5) Empires — Introduced Debt and split piles, both are great additions to the game. I also love having more Events and new cards making use of victory tokens. And Landmarks have really taken “alternate victory” to new level.

6) Intrigue-2nd Edition — With the 6 deleted cards and 7 new cards, this expansion really has improved greatly.

7) Seaside — Durations , Durations , Durations - at the time these were a major change to the game and whenever a new expansion was announced, there were always people saying they hoped there were more Durations in the set.

8. Nocturne — I love Night cards and Heirlooms, but haven’t played this enough to rank it higher at this time.

9) Hinterlands — Has a few great cards, but most are average, which is not bad, just not as exciting as some of the new things in other expansions.

10) Guilds — I enjoy the cards that use coffers (as they are now named), and it has a couple of great trashers, and one of the top villages, but the size of the expansion makes coffers and overpay feel very underutilized.

11) Alchemy — OK, but not great. They can’t all be the best expansion.

I didn’t rank the base game, because it’s not an expansion.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Which Removed Cards Do You Use IRL?
« on: April 08, 2018, 11:38:09 pm »
I continue to use all of them. I have all of the expansions and base, and I use the randomizers to gradually go through all of the cards. These may not be the greatest cards, but they are still Dominion cards. That makes them valuable to me.

Sometimes they get bought and sometimes they don’t, but that is true of many cards based on what the other cards are in the kingdom.  So I don’t mind seeing them in a game. In fact, the only one that rarely if ever gets bought in our games is Saboteur. Attacks have their place in Dominion, but we really don’t care for that one.

43
The active approach here is sometimes underutilized in difficult positions. Sometimes you just have to threaten a win and hope that they dud.

I had this happen just the other night. There were 2 Colonies left. I was down 4 Colonies to 2. I could have bought a Colony and a  Province, but went with 2 Provinces instead hoping she would only be able to buy one Colony the next turn. (She only had one card in her hand with +buy.) Instead, she hit that card and was able to buy both Colonies. She only won by 5. I believe she still would have won, but barely, and if her hand had only given enough for a Colony and Duchy, I would have won. So I have decided to try being more aggressive in those PPR situations and see what happens.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Favorite Thematic Cards (part 2)
« on: March 21, 2018, 11:46:36 pm »
Baron fancies himself to be some sort of real estate mogul, that is, he seems to pick up real Estates on a regular basis. He also loves to buy things. So he has to dispose of Estates regularly in order to bring in some money. Besides the fact that he has a somewhat shifty look to him, what is truly intriguing about him is that he always gets the same price for every Estate. You would think that with the the way the market is, he would get a little more for one over another, but completely ignoring "location, location, location", he keeps asking for the same amount each time. Definitely not a financial genius, but you can tell that from the people always whispering about him behind his back.

Pooka is just so board dependent, you need no other good trashing, Village support, and plenty of +Buy or Treasure gains to make it a good card.

You're not supposed to gain more Treasures for Pooka to trash. You're supposed to get rid of your Coppers and then you trash the Pooka with your other trasher, just like you do with Moneylender.

Also, you absolutely don't need no other good trashing. Pooka synergizes with your other good trashing.

I missed when we were voting on these new lists. So I am slowing working through the results.

I recently picked up Nocturne and we had our first Pooka games. Though I am not convinced of it being top 10% as some evidently believe, I really liked it. I would definitely rank it in the lower part of the upper half of the 5’s, at least. I used it just like Awaclus said: Trashed all of my coppers, then fed it to a Bat. We had Hermit in the kingdom and Den of Sin. It was great fun. Start with 7 cards or more with Den of Sin(s), play your Madman, draw 6, play Pooka, trash a copper and draw 4. In fact, I had the lead in our second game, and my wife came storming back with just that kind of strategy.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Nocturne: Yay or nay?
« on: January 26, 2018, 10:39:03 pm »
I voted Yay.  My wife and I are still getting through all of the new cards. In fact, we actually haven't played with Fool yet, which seems to be everyone's least liked card.  I really enjoy having the new Night phase and Heirlooms, in particular.  I also enjoy the "not in the supply" cards.  I just wish more cards made use of them.  Boons are nice, but not earth-shattering. I find Hexes to be interesting, but maybe too widely variant in their negative impact.  Still, I like the idea of a variant attack that changes throughout the game and thus is immune to just building up some common counterpunches, like trashers for cursing attacks, etc.

Overall, as others have said, any time Donald X provides us with new cards is a wonderful treat.  So thanks Donald for continuing to stretch the boundaries of Dominion and challenge our preconceptions and self-conceived limits we may place on the game.

A couple of observations from this:

1) First of all, I really like this idea. Thanks for doing it and thanks to everyone for the good , civil discussion in this thread. There are lots of good points being made by everyone to support their opinion

2) I am really impressed with how this shows the huge difference in the 2nd edition cards versus the ones that were replaced. Most of the replaced cards would have been F or at best D, but the majority of the new cards are rated A to C. That is pretty cool!  I wish all of the people who rejected base Dominion because they felt it was too simple or predictable would have started with 2nd edition. Perhaps their opinions would be different now.

3) The last Qvist ranking had Wishing Well at 26 and Smugglers at 33. So how are they possibly worthy of an A ranking? Wouldn’t a card worthy of an A ranking at least be in the top 15 of its cost group?

4) Lookout is a card I like to buy early, but, of course, I never buy a bunch of them. It doesn’t take that long for them to possibly do more harm than good. It only ranked 20 in the last Qvist ranking. To me a card ranked S would have to be a card so fundamentally powerful, you don’t dare ignore it. If there are other good thrashers, I have no problem ignoring Lookout. Personally, I would not have any trouble with Lookout as a B, though I can see a case for it as an A.

5) Like many, I would definitely put Cutpurse at least on the same level, if not above Explorer rather than the other way around. In Qvist rankings, Explorer ranked 87 out of 96, but Cutpurse was 45 out of 73. So Cutpurse ranks much higher among 4’s than Explorer does among 5’s. I pretty much always buy a Cutpurse, but Explorer is very ignorable.

The Qvist rankings are good for getting an rough idea of card power. However, it is difficult to compare different costing cards with each other using the Qvist rankings. I like Seprix's idea of a tier system better for comparing between price points.

I get what you’re saying. They are two different measures of the cards. However, I still don’t see how a card can be considered middle of the pack in one list, and in another list, though a different rating system, they are somehow among the best cards in Dominion, which is what a card in the A tier should be.

So my question was how can Wishing Well and Smugglers be A tier in these rankings if they are not even close to that in other rankings.  Did we come up with some new use for them over the past year that suddenly made them better? Or what is it that makes them A tier cards? I must be missing something because I just don’t see them as outstanding as I would expect an A tier card to be. They both have their situations where the shine, but they are often quite ignorable.

This is a great idea.  The format works well.  And the discussion stays on point, rather than devolving into debates on things not really connected to the subject.

The discussion on Donate was great, but I especially enjoyed the discussion of the Nocturne cards.  I didn't get to play with them online.  So I appreciated getting the different perspectives on the previewed cards.

Thanks again for another great feature on the blog.
