Thank you very much, Donald X, for your candid summary of what to expect.  I too have been wondering.  I am newer to Dominion than others, but when I compared the comments about Prosperity to when it was released, it seemed like we should be hearing some tidbit soon.

Thanks to all of you for your suggestions.  I appreciate hearing the various points of view.  I hadn't thought about Vineyard as being that strong.  I guess I looked at it as being like Gardens, but if you compare it to Fairgrounds, that does put a different spin on it.

If anyone else has any thoughts on this, I would love to hear your opinion.

Variants and Fan Cards / Vineyard and University Cost Without Potion
« on: July 24, 2011, 09:06:23 pm »
I checked out the threads on variants for Alchemy on BGG.  There were a couple of discussions there about giving some kind of value to the Potion cost if you were to use the cards without Potions.  Admittedly, if you are going to buy Alchemy, it really doesn't make a lot of sense to try to make such a conversion.  Just play with Potions as it was designed.

Though I personally have Base Dominion, Intrigue, all of the other expansions, and will probably purchase future expansions, I have decided at this time not to purchase Alchemy.  However, I have some blank cards that I have put to use to create an Apprentice in my collection since it doesn't use potions.  I love the card when it comes up in our random decks.  There are a couple of other cards from Alchemy for which I would like to do the same thing, namely Vineyard and University.  Obviously Herbalist would be the easiest because it doesn't require Potion in its cost.  Perhaps I will do it also if I get more blanks with future expansions, but for now I am interested in the other two mentioned.  The problem lies in translating the cost of a Potion to a card value that doesn't include Potion in the cost.

I don't wish to cause a big controversy here.  I realize that some will feel that I should just buy Alchemy and use the Potions. If that is how you feel, you probably have an excellent point, but it won't change my mind as far as buying it right now.  However, if there are some of you willing to bear with me, I would appreciate any thoughts on my reasoning on how to translate the costs for the two cards.

First of all, a Potion costs $4, Silver costs $3, and Gold costs $6.  Since Silver is then worth $2 in buying power and Gold is worth $3, that would seem to put Potion as being a Treasure worth at best $2-1/2.  Obviously that is a ludicrous cost to try to translate over to a card.  But even if you consider it as being worth $3, that would mean Vineyard costs $3 to buy and University would cost $5.  Both of those costs seem to be too low when compared to other cards in the game.  If you make it worth $4, that is what you have to pay to obtain a Potion in the first place.  So I am looking as that as my starting point.  Now let’s consider the individual cards.

First, Vineyard: In Donald X's post about the Secret History of Alchemy, he mentioned that Vineyard was originally in the Base set and Gardens was in what became Alchemy with the costs switched.  That would indicate that $4 is an acceptable cost for Vineyard since that is what it would have been if it had remained in the Base game.  That fits with the $4 translation cost for Potion since a Vineyard normally costs $0 and 1 Potion.  So that all seems pretty straight forward.

Next, University: In the post “Combo: University/Watchtower/X” on this forum the point was made that with Potion in its cost, University is kept from being too crazy.  Certainly that would be a big issue if you translated the Potion cost to just $3 for University.  It would end up being a $5 card, which you could use to get multiple Universities and then use them for multiple purchases of other $5 cards.  However, if we apply the Potion cost as $4, then University now costs $6 to buy.  That would prevent someone from using it to get more Universities.  So it would seem that would be a good cost for it, but is there any reason to think that it is too powerful to be a $6 card?  On the other hand, $7 seems to be way too much for it, and would weaken it to an extreme.  So for me, it feels best to give it a cost of $6.

Any thoughts as to my reasoning or lack of it? :)

I really like Menagerie.  It definitely deserves to be in the 5 Best $3 Cards list, though I am not sure what number I would make it (probably #4).

And if I had a choice between Pawn and Hamlet, I would pick Hamlet every time.  So I would definitely put it at #5 for the Best $2 Cards.

This past weekend we had a 3-player game with Remake as the only trashing card in which we played the same deck twice.  We also had Menagerie as the Bane card.  The first time, I focused on trashing Estates into Menagerie/Siliver.  I still ended up with several curses despite the fact that I had several Menageries in my deck.  The second game I worked on trashing the coppers first over the estates (except for one hand where I did an estate and a copper).  My deck thinned quicker, and combining that with City and Young Witch, my two Menageries that I ended up with were getting pulled more regularly into my hand so that I actually ended up getting only two curses from the Young Witch.  The deck also included Festival, Militia and Horse Traders.  So even though I was low at first on treasure, those cards were giving me virtual money that allowed me to get to Platinums, Golds and Provinces pretty quickly.  My Tournaments then hit with my Provinces for the prizes and were giving me a card and a coin early.

I don't know that this would be true with all boards, but for me it definitely worked out better to thin the deck by getting rid of coppers first over turning Estates into Silvers/Menageries.  In addition, having action cards that give $2 in place of the lost coppers works great.

I severely dislike when people see "hissyfits" in things that I feel passionately about just because the reaction might be, to them, out of proportion, because all they see is the reaction and not the thought process behind it.  I did not "freak out", I didn't go into a panic, I merely expressed a concern due to my recently acquired knowledge about a smartphone app for Ascension.  In no way did I ever mean to imply that I thought it wasn't going to be available for PC.  I'm sorry if I came across in that manner, but what was going through my head was that this entire discussion seemed like it was about smartphone apps and I wanted to be sure to have my voice felt on this manner.  If my concern is unwarranted given the reality of the situation, then that's great; I just have no way of knowing that, and was highly concerned that some developers were only interested in smartphone apps and not in PC software that would likely require a higher level of polish.
Any message is two things: what was sent out and what was received. On the receiving end you never know for sure what was sent out, you just try to pin it down as well as you can. So, you can say you didn't freak out, but that's what I received, and if you don't want to send that message in the future, don't say "please" over and over, like Bernie Bernbaum when Tom's about to shoot him.

I severely dislike people demanding/begging things of me based on their own random pessimistic speculation. And I am not too fond of what follows, which is other people thinking those imagined bad things must be based on real information, or else people being displeased with my reaction to their craziness. Those things all suck for me.

Isotropic is Doug's thing; he could shut it down any time he wanted, commercial version or not. There's something for you to worry about for no reason.

I love it that the designer of this game cares enough to be involved in so many of these discussions.  And I agree wholeheartedly, Donald, with your comments in this thread.  Thank you for your accessiblility and for all that you do share with us.  It really adds a lot to my enjoyment of this game.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Combo: Horse Traders/Library
« on: July 09, 2011, 09:22:52 pm »
This thread has been very enlightening for me.  I thought that I would possibly get some comments about Horse Traders, but instead I gained a whole new appreciation for a card I mentioned in passing.  In that past, I have to admit that I have viewed Masquerade as more of a nuisance than a beneficial card.  Sure, it would allow you to trash, but there are a lot of other cards that I felt were better trashers.  And though it does allow you to pass junk to your opponent, the fact is that especially early in the game, you usually are passing the same junk to each other.  And I was always figured that late in the game, I would generally want to keep the cards I had in my hand rather than give them away.  So it didn't seem like it was really that helpful unless it was the only trashing card in the supply.  Therefore, I have pretty much avoided it in the past.

Now, however, my opinion of it has grown considerably.  I will make more effective use of it in the future.  Thank you for the insight.  I especially like the idea of giving someone useless Sea Hags after the curses are gone and they have worn out their usefulness.

Masquerade is key in a KC game, to the point that both of you clearly should have opened silver/masquerade. That combo is very nifty, of course, and horse traders also works well with minion, menagerie, or watchtower.

I hadn't thought of Masquerade as being a better opening than Conspirator.  I know that I have read in one the strategy articles at BGG or Dominion Strategy that it is good to use your $4 buy on something that is at least a Silver equivalent.  So I thought Conspirator would be best since it gave me the $2.  I could then pick up Masquerade the next time I had $3 or $4.  Is it the trashing aspect of Masquerade that makes it better?

Thanks for the suggestions and encouragement.  I really enjoy this site and Theory's Dominion Strategy site.  Dominion is an amazing game.  We have never had a game like this that both my wife and I want to play as often as we possibly can.

Dominion General Discussion / Combo: Horse Traders/Library
« on: July 07, 2011, 05:35:55 pm »
My wife and I were playing a game at home the other night which included colonies/platinums.  The deck was as follows:
3 – Masquerade; Fortune Teller
4 – Walled Village; Conspirator; Horse Traders
5 – Harvest; Library; Rabble
6 – Nobles
7 – Kings Court

We actually played this same setup twice.  I won both games because I was able to get a better KC engine going combined particularly with Masquerade, Conspirator, and Nobles.  I also made use of Horse Traders for needed extra buys and to help discard junk.  In fact, at one point, I was able to purchase 3 Colonies in one turn, which was pretty cool for me in my limited experience with the game.

Though my wife did not win, she hit upon a combo that worked very well for her, especially early in the game.  While I started out Silver/Conspirator, she started Silver/Horse Traders.  She was able to quickly buy a Library and Walled Village soon thereafter.  Those three cards worked together very well for her.  She played the Village, drew a card, played a Horse Traders, discarded two, then Library, which then allowed her to draw 6 cards, while drawing plenty of Treasures.  Early in the game, this meant a lot of Coppers, but it worked much like a Counting House without having to have all of the Coppers in the discard.  She was thus able to get Golds, Nobles and KC’s early.  All you need is a Village or other card that gives +2 Actions.

I did not try this combo myself.  I focused on Masquerade and Conspirator early, but it certainly worked well for her when it hit.  I believe one reason that it didn’t do as well for her as it could have is that she didn’t commit strongly to it by buying multiple HT’s and Libraries.  So as her deck grew, she wasn’t able to pull it up consistently.  In addition, I was able to thin my deck quicker with KC/Masquerade.  I have no doubt that there are other combos that are stronger, but I wondered if anyone else had tried this combo and found it to be effective.  If so, what would you think would be the optimal number of HT’s and Libraries needed to make it work?

I have noticed in other posts that one type of card people have been asking for is more duration cards.  Though this technically isn't considered a duration card, it certainly has those characteristics.  So even though Donald X has said no more duration cards, we are still getting some cards that feed our interest in durations.  And from Cornucopia, Horse Traders also has Duration characteristics.  :D
