Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Dominion: Gunpowder
« on: July 27, 2014, 05:23:31 pm »
It's not this thread specifically that is the issue.  Eevee was saying that he thinks it reflects poorly on the f.ds that people are joking about Bomb (and the set and the guy behind it) all over the forum.  It's become a sort of f.ds inside joke a la Scout or Mint/Mine, but Eevee perceives it as mean-spirited rather than being just good fun.

I understand his point.  On the other hand, the guy was kind of a jerk and it was pointed out that his behaviour has been just as ridiculous in other corners of the internet.  Even so, we could stand to tone down the jokes.

Honestly I disagree with Eevee's sentiment here, though I understand it.  I think it just shows that we're a generally I light-hearted community that can take anything and turn it into a joke, and that's part of the good thing about this forum. I don't think there is really any mean-spiritedness in here.

Yeah. Also, I really think that any newcomer who sees this should understand that ErrinF brought this upon himself by not being new, but by being a... funny person.

doesn't like programming.
Is this even possible?

A couple lines of code worth on changes can go a long way to improving the game experience.

Or, in my case, a bajillion lines of code...  My brother uses RPG Maker to make the game (it isn't RPG though), and he doesn't know how to program, so when it comes to the extra programming, I have to do it all, and there's a lot he wants me to do...
Why would you use RPG Maker for anything that isn't an RPG? I think it would probably be easier to just learn how to program with a simple language that's designed for game creation, or Game Maker if programming is out of the question.

The last FPS I played was the new Wolfenstein, but I dropped it pretty soon because it didn't run on my computer as smoothly as it should have, for some reason. The one before that was Crysis. Usually I prefer 2D shooters; Netmatch, for instance, is a wonderful game. Too bad nobody plays it.

We were all new once, newer guys don't always know what they are talking about.
This is not merely a newbie being a newbie.

well I'll watch it (if it's good). but i doubt that it will change much.

Just so you know, it takes a few episodes for anybody to start to like it.  And, watch a sub, not the dub.  They chose horrible voices for the dub.

And, the second season is what makes them really amazing.
After Story is the most boring thing by Kyoto Animation ever. And I watched every single episode of Endless Eight. It is not recommended to expect too much of it, but the first season is definitely worth watching.

I didn't think of how different it is depending on genre...  The case we were talking about is a puzzle-adventure game.  And, while all of these things are important, I'm wondering what the number one thing is.
Intuitive controls, and after that, interesting puzzles and a low enough learning curve.

If you just saw the link, then I could see why you would associate my avatar with humor and funny stuff.  You would have to watch the whole show to see why it's so amazing.
Just the first season though.

Hearthstone / Re: Are there any good general guides for beginners?
« on: July 26, 2014, 11:32:12 am »
I'm getting the hang of it already, currently I'm on rank 16 in ranked. I guess the most important thing that kept losing me games was the fact that I wasn't familiar with the cards so I would empty my hand right before a sweep, use my removal on less important minions, take more caution than necessary even if the opponent doesn't have a way of winning next turn (or vice versa, which is even worse) etc. There are still surprises with some of the rare and better cards that I haven't seen before, of course, and I still lose games for other reasons too (just generally suboptimal play and/or bad shuffle luck), but I win sometimes too!

while we're at the topic: how much advise should you give others? it seems like a waste not to say something if your op is doing an obvious mistake, but it's also kind of weird to just give advise out of nowhere. you could ask "should i tell you something you did wrong", but that sounds kind of arrogant. what I'm currently doing is basically say something if it was an incredibly obvious mistake, like the pirate thing, and otherwise keep quiet. but I haven't really figured it out yet.

You could ask, "Do you want some advice?"  It doesn't sound as arrogant.
And then you can discard their best card.

Help! / Re: A Wharf game. Why does my opponent get the initiative?
« on: July 26, 2014, 05:38:40 am »
Unless you're committing more heavily to a Wharf/Crossroads engine, getting Crossroads early is a waste of time. Most likely it won't draw you any cards since it's a Shelters game, and it's not very likely for your Wharves to collide anyway, plus you don't have enough +actions to make sure you won't play Wharf and draw Crossroads dead. So most of the time, it's just a waste of a card slot in your hand and a wasted opportunity to buy something better. On turn 4, I'd buy a Silver instead, and on turn 5, I'd buy a second Wharf and a Silver. Watchtower is another mistake; you'll start with a 7-card-hand pretty often anyway, so you can only use it for the topdecking/trashing ability, which isn't worth it on this board. On turns 7 and 8, you should have gotten the Silvers since you had the coins and the buys to get it in addition to the other stuff you bought. Turn 9 should have been another Wharf, generally it's not a good idea to buy a Duchy or an Estate early to trash Hovel since you lose 1 bad card and gain 1 bad card so you're not improving your deck at all, but if you wait until you're buying a Victory card you would have had to buy anyway (such as Province), then it's basically as good as getting rid of 1 bad card. On turn 10, you should be buying Provinces already, and the Laboratory on turn 11 should have been a Duchy. You most certainly don't want to buy the Province on turn 14, since it ends the game in a loss for you, that should have been double Gardens instead.

If you draw your Feast with $3+, then you'll trash your Feast for the Wharf and buy a Silver, which is as good as buying a Silver in the first place and then buying the Wharf. If you draw it with less than $3, you now have a Wharf where you would have two Silvers with a Silver opening. I think the Silver is better early on.

Should we be moved to RSP yet? :P
Let's make a poll!

I thought that the hints for Dumbledore's homosexuality were pretty obvious. The Finnish translation might or might not have influenced this.

It's like posting really bad strategy advice in the Articles forum. Or really bad tournaments in the Tournaments and Events forum.

why are you slytherin awaclus? wouldn't that translate into, like, feeling proud about being an american?
I wasn't thinking that way, I just thought of some characters from the books and the Slytherin ones reminded me of myself the most. I definitely do not think that some races should be considered better than others.

I bet Celestial Charmeleon would easily find a way to end the game by turn 2 if you can rearrange your cards each time you draw a card (in opposition to "only" assume perfect shuffle luck) :)
Isn't that the same thing though, edge cases aside?

Wait, FTTW has a girlfriend?

Is that really so surprising?

Everyone knows drummers get all the ladies.

That's actually a myth. I believe the order of lady-getting goes something like this:

1) Singer
2) Guitarist
3) Bassist
4) Tromboner
5) Drummer
6) Keyboardist
7) KingZog3

So as you can see, the drummer is at the lower end of the spectrum. It's a sad sad life.
As a drummer and a keyboardist, I can confirm this. And I'm KingZog3 too, since we're all Wandering Winder.

It's not a lot worse than with Estates. I almost always go for it, and if my opponent ignores it, I usually win.

Fairgrounds has a very good art too, but I agree that it's unfitting. I like Storeroom, it's powerful like that, more detail would ruin it.

Apparently, I'm Ravenclaw.

So which do I pick if I've never read any Harry Potter book nor seen any Harry Potter movie?

House Harkonnen?  House Lannister?
I was sure this would be about Dune when I opened the thread.
