General Discussion / Re: roguelike games

Eh, I agree that the DEF upgrade is useless, but you can beat the game without a perfect pilot anyway, at least up to hard, 4 islands. I can see the argument if you are trying to go for hard achievements or consistency though. I personally saw it as a way to try new pilots, simply by not choosing the pilot I started with on that run.

Your reddit analysis is interesting! I think you undervalue starting weapons, since it might take a while until you get good ones offered to you, if ever. And even if you do, up until then, having a subpar weapon could have cost you reputation or electricity from missions gone wrong. Still, it’s true that some mechs are vastly better than others, and I personally undervalued science mechs according to your analysis. I don’t think they are balanced individually though, more likely they were always considered as part of their default team.

You can pick any pilot you want though, no? It just won’t start at max level.

I got burnt out before I unlocked all the squads, but i think that’s my fault for binging it. It can get a bit repetitive after a while, though I agree it’s a very good game nonetheless.

I find that the longevity of a Civ game mostly depends on your willingness to roleplay your civ and/or set side goals. Because otherwise it’s indeed very rare to not have a game decided 100 turns before the end.

People just suck at prefixes, man.

Prefixes are words in front of other words that, while being part of the same term, are still visually divided by a space. An example would be "counter measure"'s "counter". What you mean are antefixes, units that are part of the very same word, such as "ante" in antefix.

I like to make stuff up on the internet for fun.

Man I almost got trolled.

@GendoIkari:

If you want to try it, you need to know conservation of momentum:

M1*V1 +M2*V2=M1*V1’+M2*V2’

And, for elastic collisions in one dimension:

(V1-V2) = -(V1’-V2’)

M denotes mass, V velocity, 1-2 denote the body, and the ’ denotes the value post-collision.

Just watched Into the spiderverse. It's the most excited I've been about a superhero movie in a long while. If you are even just mildly interested by animation or superhero movies, you should watch it.

Yeah, the way Civ games handle difficulty is one of the main weak points of the series, unfortunately. Note that there are other ways to adjust difficulty, like the kind of map you play in. King-Pangea is closer to Emperor-Small Islands, for example, than both difficulties in Continents. The AI is really bad at water warfare. Or you could choose rival Civs that are more peaceful for your first games at the new difficulty level.

I think the main problem with treason is forcing people to show their hand constantly. It would be better as an event, I think. And yeah, better if it doesn’t stack.

I saw! It’s interesting that they are adding natural disasters to the civ game with the most expensive workers. That’s... a bold decision, but I am hopeful.

The new mechanics of this expansion are a bit unclear too. There are natural disasters, climate change, mild terraforming (canals, tunnels), new energy sources, the return of the UN and diplomatic victory, and an expanded future tech era?

Right now I don’t have enough free time to get back into civ, hopefully when we get the complete edition with a discount!

Is a trichromatic triangle a triangle whose 3 corners have different colours, or one in which the sides of the triangle contain all 3 colours?

The “either way” in grimoire is weird. Can you reverse the order of the commands so that it’s not necessary? If going with the second Barbarian, I would just make it “If you have achieved at least three Feats”, and limit it to 5 cards or more. Sounds too scary otherwise.

I like the cards though!

Does it interact with Coppersmith?

The general idea is good. But as Fly said, Attack is bit too Kingdom dependent. Which isn't a problem if there are several maps and you randomize them-
I also think that "no cards in deck or discard pile" condition needs a timing element; otherwise this is fulfilled at the start of the game (empty discard) as well as at the start of turn 2 (empty deck).

Pretty sure it’s supposed to be a “nor”.

Looks fun in principle though!

It does not seem like the moderator wants us to make any further action about this, and in fact wishes the situation hadn't spread over here. As far as I am concerned, that should be the end of it.

On the other hand, if Awaclus is presenting himself as an "ambassador" (or whatever) of f.ds mafia, that is a problem that should be dealt with.

I don’t notice much difference for Sanctuary, but I agree with Eagles that Maze looks a lot better now that the focus of the image is on the maze itself.

I think in terms of raw quality, seasons 1 and 2 were the best. But I'm super entertained by the storylines of season 5. I was a little disappointed by the way the start of season 2 answered so many things. Season 1 had a large number of questions (Who had been on the island before? Why was there a polar bear? How are there man-made things like giant hatches in the ground?) which were all answered at the same time with "scientists once used this island as a place to run their programs and conduct experiments". It just felt like a lot of the initial mystery was gone (though quickly replaced with new mystery).

I don’t think the polar bear was ever explained. “Scientists!” Is not an explanation. It might explain a colony of monkeys or some other lab animal, but not a polar bear in a tropical climate, years after the scientists left, especially if they don’t explain what experiment would require a friggin’ polar bear in the first place!

I don't think this is a spoiler, but just to make sure in response to the "terrible ending": The terrible ending didn't make the whole season suck, just half of the 6th (last) season, its side storyline. Even in the finale the rest of the main storyline was amazing and tense throughout.

The problem isn't just that ending that pretty much invalidates most of the last season. It's that all the time spent over that storyline is time not spent resolving the thousands of dangling plot points from previous seasons. Though it slowly became apparent a few seasons before the end that the series wasn't interesting in those, so it's not like it came like a huge surprise by then. Still, that's why I felt like I would have preferred never starting the show.

I understand why he didn’t spoiler it, but agree with Jimmmmm that he should have.

I found Lost addicting while I was watching it, but by the time I saw the finale, I regretted ever starting the show. I had heard it was ultimately disappointing, but didn’t expect it to be so bad. Some people that don’t care about the same things I do in a TV series loved it though, so YMMV (I think Robz is a pretty vocal defender of the series).
