why?

Well, all points have other points that are a rational distance away.  So it can't be one, since one click will not turn the points a rational distance away black.

I didn't want to post a problem while heron's was still on the table, but now I'll share it.  This is my favorite math problem.  It is from a fairly well-known math contest, so don't spoil it if you've seen it.

Each point on the xy-plane is colored white.  You have a paintbrush tool with the peculiar property that when you click on a point, each point an irrational distance from where you clicked will be colored black.  For instance, if you click on the origin (0,0), then (1,1) will turn black since sqrt(2) is irrational, but (0,1) will not turn black.

Is it possible to color the entire plane black with a finite number of clicks?  And if so, what is the fewest number of clicks required?

Ooh!  The lower bound is 2! (not 2!, but two with an actual exclamation mark (although 2! = 2...))

I believe that blowing into the cartridge is actually likely to damage it. It moves the grit around, which might make it work, but also scrapes at the connections.

Have you ever had a NES, SNES, N64, or handheld system that was made by Nintendo?  Because those things don't work without blowing in them.

That's the card I thought of after you said stuff.  I don't know why you thought I knew whether or not mail-mi had it, when you were the only one with that information.
Here is how you could have known the result:
sudgy - you know you don't have it
TA - you asked him, if he had green solitaire - he had none
Nkirbit - I asked him, if he had diamond solitaire - he had none
GOM - mail-mi asked me, if I had green solitaire - I had none
That leaves mail-mi: you asked him, if he had green opals. Hence you knew that he has at least one green solitaire (the green opal solitaire, he showed you). After my last question, you could deduce that he had no other green solitaires, hence nobody has the green diamond solitaire.

Oh, I realize now that I made a mistake on that last question.  I forgot to check if mail-mi already had one of those cards.

Just seeing the board, it's obvious that this is a Vineyard board.  Stonemason, Rats, you can easily trash Squires for Goons, etc.  The game three piled pretty quickly (although I don't know why my opponent did it), and I already had a nine point vineyard (I didn't get any more because of how fast the game ended) by that point.

(Edit: I said something kind of stupid here. )

I was about to respond to the thing you said was stupid, but it was gone!  :O :O :O

I'll respond to it anyway.  I've actually not taken a single bit of calculus officially.  I've just studied it in my free time, because I know that will help me in the future (I want to do physics in college, and from what I've seen, it requires a lot of calculus).  It's all for fun anyway, and I was just curious about something, so I thought I would ask here (I'd already looked at a few other places and couldn't find anything).

One way to derive it is to use Euler's formula!

The reason I was asking was because the derivation of Euler's formula that I saw used it at a part...  :P

Yeah.  This is how I proved Euler's Formula in my differential equations class a few months ago.

In general, there is no such thing as "the definition" of a mathematical object like sine.  Rather, there is a web of equivalent statements, any one of which can be used as "the definition".  So to prove it in an entirely satisfactory way, I would need to know the definition you are starting with.

Another way to solve the equation y'' = -y is to search for a power series solution.  Suppose we want the solution which matches y(0) = 0, y'(0) = 1.  Then
y = 0 + x + a2 x^2 + a3 x^3 + ...
y'' = 2 a2 + 2*3 a3 x + 3*4 a4 x^2 + ...

Since we want y'' = -y, we match up coefficients and solve.  You'll arrive at the Taylor series for sin(x).

Aaaaaaaaand I don't understand it.  I guess I'll wait until I know more to think about it.

My parents bought a house for something like $80k and sold it for something like $200k.  It was a huge house, but in horrible condition.  Over the years we lived there we fixed it up a lot.  It was nice getting the house we live in now without any mortgage.

Actually, this might be a good idea.  It takes over the random stuff thread a lot.

Can anyone show me why the solution to y'' = -y is A*sin(x) + B*cos(x)?  It might be too complicated for me, but I'm still curious.  I can see that it needs to be sinusoidal, and that that equation is a solution, but how do you derive it?

Oh right, there's only one card missing.  My notes don't have any card that everybody but you doesn't have, so I have no idea what it is...
I justed checked my notes. According to what I know, the information you have should be sufficient to find the missing card as well. TA should probably be able to guess which card is missing, if I'm right.

Oh, I might know what card it is, but I don't have the information on that card, though you do.

Or more, I don't have all of the information needed.  I know several people don't have it, and the last person might have it, and you have that information.

But not sure how that's relevant in a journey across London....

Driving in London? Not worth the risk!

10 minute bike ride (not across London) for me.  PSA: people massively underestimate the value of a short commute.  Make it a priority when you're looking for somewhere to live.

My dad is a pastor, and we moved to about one mile away from church.  It's really nice being that close since we can easily walk to and from it.

Thanks.  It looks like some idiot (me) didn't actually update ALL of the Salvager code to only use the standard 443 port.  This causes some problems for people behind firewalls or with paranoid network protection programs.

Will fix and redeploy soon, probably tomorrow evening.  It's a really easy fix, but AdamH wore me out.

Upvoted just for saying that my fixing was what told it to you, not all of his information.

The tangent and cotangent are both segments tangent to the circle; the secant and cosecant are both segments secant to the circle.

Note this diagram also shows all the Pythagorean identities.

Wait, that isn't even the line segment I was talking about for tangent. The one from the point-of-interest to the x-axis tangent to the circle is also tangent, isn't it?

The triangle made here and the triangle you describe are congruent, so yes.

And I agree, that's an amazing diagram.

When I access playdominion.com on Google Chrome from work (Windows 8), I'm able to use Dominion Salvager, but it does not let me change my avatar.  Whenever, I try to upload my avatar image, I get a "Failed to transmit file" error.  Everything works fine from my home computer (also Windows 8).

Any thoughts/suggestions?

It's always nice to finally understand why something I knew was true.  For instance, I learned a while ago that e^(i*pi) is equal to -1, but I never knew why.  In a calculus textbook I was reading, he went off on a random tangent (not a sine (but now I might be going off on a cotangent mentioning this)) about imaginary exponents, and I realized what was going on while it was happening.
