Dominion Articles / Articles, not General Dominion Discussion
« on: September 15, 2013, 03:43:19 pm »
First, disclaimer: I am not a mod, and can't make you do anything.

It always annoys me (this isn't against any person) when people post threads in this section of the forums without it being an article or related to articles.  When I see a thread name in here, I think, "Ooh, I'm looking forward to reading that."  Then it's not an article, and instead something not interesting...  I would say the main things that should go in here are actual full-fledged articles, or article requests, or basically anything talking about actual dominion articles, just not general strategy discussion.[/rant]

Variants and Fan Cards / A card that doesn't fit in the contest...

I couldn't find a set this would fit under, so I'm putting it here (there's probably a bajillion cards with this name):

Metropolis
$6 Action
+2 Cards
+2 Actions
-----
You may not gain this if you have any Metropolises in play.

Exactly what the title says.  I noticed that King's Court, Bridge, and Governor were in the kingdom, and I decided that's good enough for me.  And, after carefully building my deck, drawing it all, and pulling off the combo, my opponent says, "lucky"...

Mafia Game Threads / Rules of Mafia

Basic Mafia Ruleset

The Golden Rule:

Please remember that this is a game and your main objective is to have fun!  Be considerate of each other, don’t get personal, and enjoy the game.

Please read The Civility Pledge before signing up for any mafia game on this site.  If you have not /pledged there, you cannot play.

Excessive personal attacks or uncivil behavior may be dealt with by modifiers or modkills.

Game Summary:

Mafia is a social deduction game.  There is an "informed minority" (the mafia) and an "uninformed majority" (the town).  The mafia know who each other are, and are trying to be the only people left alive.  The town doesn't know who anybody else is, and are trying to find and lynch all of the mafia.  The mafia, to make sure the town doesn't know who they are, must pretend to be town to win.  The mafia usually can kill at night, to help them in being the only ones left alive.

1. General Gameplay and Etiquette:

1. You may not quote private Moderator-supplied information (either real or fabricated) of any kind.  Paraphrasing (for role claims, etc.) is acceptable.
2. There is to be NO personal communication outside of the forum postings unless your role PM specifically allows it.  Mafia members may communicate at night and during the confirmation stage.
3. If you have a role with a Night action your choices are due to all mods by the posted deadline (generally 48 hours from Night start during the first few Nights; later Nights may have shorter deadlines).  If we do not receive your PM by the posted deadline you will forfeit your actions.  In case of multiple submissions, the last valid one before the deadline will be used.  If your Night action was mandatory, it will be decided randomly.
4. Roles with Night actions will not be able to submit an action on Night 0 (i.e. during the confirmation stage).
5. Any player with a Night action may instead submit a “No Action” PM to let the Mods know that you do not want to perform your expected action that Night phase.
6. As a general rule you should aim for one post every 24 hours, minimum, to keep the game moving.

2. Voting, Deadlines, and Player Death:

1. A simple majority (rounded up) of all living members must agree on one person for a lynch to occur prior to deadline.
2. Once you have reached a simple majority no further unvoting will change someone’s fate.  Further votes will also be ignored.
3. Once a player is lynched the game enters twilight until the mods lock the thread; all players including the one who was lynched may continue to post during twilight.
4. The length of deadlines is up to the mod's discretion.
5. What happens when the deadline is hit and nobody has a majority of votes is up to the mod's discretion.
6. Please submit votes as: Vote: PlayerName.  Votes will NOT be counted if they are not bold or do not follow this syntax! Obvious abbreviations or nicknames will be counted so long as they are unambiguous.
7. Please submit vote revocations as either Unvote: PlayerName or Unvote. Unvotes are not necessary before changing votes.
8. You may Vote: No Lynch - a simple majority of these vote types are required to send the game to Night phase without a lynch.
9. Once you are killed (either via lynch or night kill) you may no longer post in the game or in Quicktopics. This means that you do not even get a “Bah” post. The dead in this game are silent.
10. If the thread is locked, you may not post.  Threads can be locked for various reasons, but no matter what the reason, you may not post.  The mod may forget to lock the thread, but if they say it is locked, it is still locked.
11. Do not edit or delete posts.  We don't want some players having more information than others.  If you want to clarify posts, feel free to double post. Mods will not edit posts for you.

3. Miscellaneous/Mechanics:

1. Bold, colored text is reserved for the Mods.  No invisible/small text is allowed, nor is cryptography.
2. If you have an issue/problem with the game, please PM the Mods privately.  Do not post issues/complaints in the game thread.
3. The Mods may make mistakes - please point out any mistakes gently.  Mistakes will be corrected where possible, but sometimes mistakes are made that cannot be reversed.  These will stand as final to be commiserated over after the game.
4. Please bold all requests to the Mods so that they don’t get missed.
5. Prods of missing players will be issued upon request after 24 hours of no activity.  A prodded player has 48 hours to respond or risks replacement.  A player who has been prodded 2 times is subject to replacement under rule 3.10 without further notice.
6. Please do not discuss ongoing games, it can unintentionally affect the other game.
7. Rule violations will be dealt with according to their severity, which may include modkill(s) if needed.
8. If you anticipate being unavailable for more than a 48-hour period please post a notice to that effect in the thread.  Treat this game as a commitment.  Be considerate – don’t leave us hanging.
9. Players who discover they are too busy to play in a game or want to leave the game for civility issues are not allowed to officially /out in the thread.  A request to /out must only be done via a PM to the moderator.  Please do not use this as a manipulation technique.  (Note players may continue to threaten to /out or imply that they might as long as it does not include an official request).  Requests to /out are final once submitted.  There will be no /outing and then /inning back into the game so make sure that when you /out you have thought it through and really want to do it. Players that can't be replaced will simply be mod-killed.
10. If a player wants to /out, they may be replaced by anyone on D1-N1.  On D2-N2, no one from the speccy may replace the player.  After this, a player who /outs may not be replaced.  It is up to the mod's discretion whether to modkill the player or do something else under these circumstances.

I was going to go for an engine.  It kicked in too late.  So, I changed my strategy.  With how much I was Rabbling him, I started doing a type of golden deck with three bishops and three golds.  After a long time, I finally managed to pull in a win when he had seven provinces.

Puzzles and Challenges / Maximum points
« on: August 09, 2013, 03:15:11 pm »
I don't know why I like thinking up of next-to-impossible puzzles, but this one seems fairly interesting.  Without Monument, Fortress, Trader, Rogue, or Graverobber (so you can't get infinite points), what is the maximum amount of points you can get in a solitaire game?

Alright, easier definition (suggested by SirPeebles): Among kingdoms with an upper bound on available VP, what is the highest attainable score?

Welcome to NewMafia IV

(If you want the spec QT, PM me)

This game is a newbie game.  As such, new players will get priority signups, and this game will have a simple setup.

I thought I would do a Border Village/Smithy engine (with a few other added cards, see the log).  When my opponent opened Pirate Ship, I knew it would be easy (and he was >5000?!?).  I didn't know I would get all the provinces in 14 turns though...  What was it that made it so good?  Was it his Pirate Ships, or something that I didn't realize that I did?

Non-Mafia Game Threads / The Questions Game

(Start of game here)

This is (as Voltgloss put it) an "interactive forum-based text adventure."  You will be put in a situation and do things there.  It's funner than it sounds.  A few rules:

1. This will be for a max of four players.  It can get crazy with more (I've always done this irl, this number may be different as I see how it goes).  Signups are first come, first serve.
2. There are no turns, people just say what they do whenever they want.
3. When you /in, PM me your name in the game (I'll still refer you to your username though when mentioning you) and a single superpower or piece of equipment you start with.  It can't too powerful.
4. There is no real "end" to this game, people can drop out if they wish (then someone else can come in as well!)
5. No saying to do something inappropriate, all such commands will be ignored.

Sign-up list:

1. Voltgloss
2. Jorbles
3. Kuildeous
4. Galzria

P.S. The way of playing this game was made by my brother, so credit goes to him for making it.

EDIT: I'll be editing in rules as I think of more:

6. Please bold all actions that you will do.  Anything not bolded will not happen.  You can discuss things non-bolded, of course.
7. All actions are final.  Even if you change them, you can't.

Also, a random note, I won't always be around, so it might be a while before it gets updated.

General Discussion / Shuffling

Random topic, how much can you shuffle (the "official" way).

I can shuffle the randomizer deck with ALL the expansions.

63
I am now starting a movement to call the Vanilla Village the Vanillage.  Who's with me?

64
I've always wondered the answer to this question, and it gets annoying every time it comes up:  Is it better to trash a few cards, or not trash them and get the first Mountebank?  (or something similar)  (of course it depends on the kingdom, but what do you usually want to do?)

General Discussion / Myers Briggs personality types
« on: June 18, 2013, 10:20:52 pm »
I was thinking recently about how I post on the internet might seem different than how I talk irl.  So, I had an idea: having people try to guess my personality type (and others as well, if others want to) with the Myers Briggs personality thingamabob.  I'll say what mine is in a bit.

So, if anybody wants to try to guess mine, or others want to say theirs, I guess this is the thread for it.

P.S.: THINGAMABOB IS A WORD TOO?!?

Dominion General Discussion / A new pin
« on: June 16, 2013, 07:54:45 pm »
This is hard to pull off, but make sure your opponent has at least five dead cards in his deck (and hopefully a small deck).  Play Council Rooms and/or Governors to make you opponent draw most of his deck.  Then, play pillages (hopefully throne roomed or king's courted) and make them discard everything but the dead cards.  Have some Graverobbers and Rogues to get them all back.

This would be hard to do and probably wouldn't work that well...  Just a crazy thing I realized.

67
Usually, to look at new posts I click on the show unread posts since last visit thing.  That usually gets all of the posts I haven't read.  But when I haven't read for a while, it only shows some of them.  How can I say to look at them all?

Game Reports / First time winning with three provinces...
« on: June 11, 2013, 12:32:18 pm »
Well, without alt-vp and my opponent getting five.  We were playing the second suggested set from Dark Ages and Alchemy (I think it was called Lamentations).  I saw some engine potential with the University, Catacombs, and Ironmonger (with Pillages for some money and attacking and forager and counterfeit for trashing and buys), and my opponent was seemingly doing random things.  But, he made a forager deck where each one was worth +$5, and with a few golems was unstoppable.  And it kicked in really fast too.  My engine was kicking in when he got four provinces, and my pillages stopped him short.  He managed to get one more province, but I got six duchies (he got two), a couple estates, and the other three provinces.  My opponent was getting mad at me for prolonging the game, but it was the only way I could win...

http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20130525/log.5067a87aa2e6086ef3c5a03e.1369541272800.txt

I went for a Torturer/Conspirator engine, and as it was kicking in I realized that the easiest way to win would be to three-pile with a lead.  But, I couldn't find any piles to deplete, so I bought a bunch of provinces.  I didn't think about it, but he had Embargoed the Provinces earlier and those few Provinces netted to those last few curses, and the game ended.

Dominion General Discussion / Combo: Rats/Market Square
« on: May 22, 2013, 10:56:42 pm »
EDIT: I've noticed it should be a bit different, look lower to see what I say now.

I finally got Dark Ages (yay!) and the first game had Rats.  Desperately looking for a way to make them work (I've always wanted to...  ;D), I saw the Market Square.  I realized that when I trashed with the Rats I could get quite a bit of gold.  Despite the only other trashing card being the Count, I went for it.  It worked quite well.  Basically, how you do it:

1. Hopefully open Rats/Market Square.
2. Get 2-3 Market Squares, maybe a couple Silvers, and some trasher (TfB would be a bit better).
3. Play a normal Rats strategy, discarding the Market Squares as you trash.
4. Profit.

This was irl so I'm not sure how fast it was, but it felt pretty fast.  Faster than usual.

EDIT: This should be what it is:
1. Open Rats/Market Square.
2. Play Rats only if you have a Market Square (or more!) and a useless card in hand.
3. Buy Province>Gold>Market Square.  It doesn't matter how many Market Squares you have, the more the better.
4. If there is some other trashing, get it a bit of the way in, but not right away.

Variants and Fan Cards / A bunch of Victory-related cards
« on: May 14, 2013, 11:49:34 pm »
I got some of these from various places, but here goes:

Isolationist - $? Victory
Worth 1 VP per Province in the supply.

Conqueror - $? Action
Trash up to three cards from your hand.  +VP per card you trash.

Herald - $? Victory
Worth 1 VP per three Victory Points you have (excluding points from copies of Herald)

Battlefield - $? Action - Reaction
Discard any number of cards.  +VP per 2 cards you discard.  If you discard more than 5 cards this way, trash this.
-----
When another play plays an attack card, you may discard this.  If you do, +1 VP.

Courtier - $? Action - Victory
Worth 1VP per every 3 Victory Tokens you have.
-----
+1 VP

Mainly, ideas for costs and minor tweaks to each card is what I'm looking for.  The trashing the second-to-last one is so you can't pull off a megaturn every single turn.
