Alright, in the Julie vs. Harniver match, Julie (rls 22) wins 4-1.  But, I forgot to grab the log for one of the games.  I tried my best to download the bundle of games and search for it, but I am just not that kind of tech person and I got annoyed after about 20 min of no success.  So, there's one log missing.

It was a good match – I’ve never played in a tournament before, so was definitely a different experience than how I usually play (often “mindless” fast games, usually as breaks from work or while multi-tasking).  Even though I won 4-1, there were two games (#1 and #5) that were very close, and that I was in imminent danger of losing if Harniver had managed the end game differently.  I tried to get cute with Tunnel/Navigator in #1 and that did not work out.  And Double Tactician was probably not necessary in #2 (but always fun).

Game #1 – Julie wins, 38-29, http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/03/game-20121203-144343-727a91b2.html

So, you're one of those guys who waits a minute after I've played my hand, takes 30 seconds to decide his move, plays it out and then, after I've had all day to know my next turn and play it immediately and return the game to you in less than 5 seconds you wait another minute and rinse and repeat.

Nope.  I'm a really fast player.  Too fast for my own good, I'm sure.  I multi-task (usually reading in another tab, using the sound cue to click over) because others are often too slow for me.  I should probably not have said "always" because if it's a game with a fast opponent (and no big action engines), there's not a lot of downtime.  But, it helps me not be annoyed at slower players when I have something else to do.

I think I do remember that game, Jive Junkie... it was a good one!

Ha, no I love that response.  The problem is usually that they tend to disappear right after getting off their parting shot.  It is pretty satisfying to be able to mute them if they're a jerk during the game, though (especially if I say something like "u mad?" first, which... uh... may mean that I am also part of the problem).  Anyways, the true assholes are few and far between, for which I am grateful....

I always wondered exactly what hitting the exit button instead of Resign did.  Good to know that that's why the "autoplay" thing happens (I wonder why Exit does that instead of just ending the game?).  So, Exit is another option if you can't wait to the start of your turn (but, obviously, there will always be emergencies and/or random computer problems that prevent this).

And no, Captain Frisk, I wasn't referring to you...  :)

I'm not in favor shaming specific people when there's a glimmer of possibility, no matter how faint, that there's some other explanation for what happened.  But I'm all for shaming true assholes (like the one above).  We basically have no other way to police the behavior.  It may be 99.9% pointless, but if it makes it a little harder for the person to get a game going, well, that's 0.1% anyways.

Just played against drew86, and after I won, this is what he had to say:

drew86:  way to get lucky you pathetic bitch

A.  I always multi-task when I play dominion.  Still, it's annoying to have to wait because someone else was discourteous.

B.  The last two times it's happened (in the past 24 hours, both with higher ranked players), it's been right after a big turn of mine that basically rendered the game unwinnable for the other person.  So, I highly doubt it's internet connectivity issues in these instances, given the timing. But, of course, that's always a possibility.

C. My whole point is that if you're a high-ranked player, closing your browser out of frustration is not okay.  Some folks don't know about the resign button, or don't care about courtesy or the community or whatever, but I would hope for better from higher ranked folks or people who play a lot.  For the most part, this community is pretty great, so I recognize this is a minor quibble in the Grand Scheme of things (Grand Scheme - you can put two action cards back on your deck?) .

D.  If it teaches more people about the Resign button, or causes more people to actually use it, then I would suggest that a thread is warranted.  I purposefully didn't name any names of the people who did it because I didn't want this to be a "shaming" thread.

... being a high-ranked player and not clicking "Resign" when you want to resign.  I don't care if you want to resign because the game isn't winnable for you, but don't make me wait 3 minutes before I can play another game.

I usually just assume the person doesn't know about the Resign button (and in case you're reading this and don't, if you want to resign, at the start of your turn, hit the End Turn button and the Resign button will appear; if you just close your browser, your opponent has to wait 3 minutes to resign you).  But, if you're Lvl 30+ or have 1k+ games, there's no excuse.

Dominion Isotropic / Re: The point counter/game tracker
« on: July 23, 2012, 06:32:03 pm »
So, if you don't want people to type !disable, why not just prohibit disabling in your PCE?

I'm in the camp that's fine with the regular point counter (generally, because I can and do keep track of the score in my head IRL games and when I play games with no point tracker on Iso... the point tracker just allows me to be lazy) but would rather not play with the mega-PCE (because there's no way I could keep track of the score and the exact contents of my deck and my opponent's, because it does provide a significant advantage in some games to the person using it).

Also, I'm basically never going to hunt for the name of the person I auto-matched with and see what their status says before accepting a game.  That's just not going to happen.  So, sometimes I get matched with someone and I can't disable the PCE, which is not ideal, but not a huge problem for me (if I cared that much, I'd search for their status before accepting...).

But taking a bunch of extra actions on your last turn before ending it, or buying a bunch of pointless Copper with your extra buys after ending it, is not.

I'm not sure I agree with this fully.  I mean, buying extra stuff with your extra buys is fine (e.g., a Province and a Duchy, if you only needed the Province to win).  But, at least a few times, I've been on the receiving end of someone who played out "a bunch of extra actions" when they had enough $ near the start of their turn to buy the last province and end it.  My philosophy tends to be, if you unnecessarily prolong the game on your last turn by more than 5-10 seconds, I will be (silently) annoyed with you.  I understand how tempting it is to want to play with your fun engine deck just one more turn (it's certainly tempting for me too), but begin respectful of your opponent's time is a good thing.

I've seen this a number of times - Ptolemy, theParty, and someone else yesterday that I can't remember (maybe "cant beat me"?).  I often just accept anyways, but I never know whether that means I'm playing against a Level 35+ player but it's counting in the rankings as a Level 0 game.

Dominion Isotropic / Re: Most Vetoed Card?
« on: February 10, 2012, 05:59:28 pm »
Well, it depends on my position.  If I'm Player 2, and there's an attack with Player 1 advantage (Sea Hag, Militia, Cutpurse, etc.) I'll veto that.  If I'm Player 1, I try to pick what my strategy will be, and then veto the thing that will get in the way of my strategy.  Barring that, I'll usually veto the typical high variance cards (Familiar, Treasure Map) or sometimes alternative Victory card strategies - e.g., Duke which I'm not 100% confident with as a strategy.

I'll let "trap" cards stand if there's a good out for me (Pirate Ship if there are +$ actions on the board, Alchemist if there's no +buy and it's a Province game, Possession if there are good attacks), in the hopes that my opponent will go for the trap.

I know some are opposed to the veto mode, but I don't mind it.. it's like a game within a game...  I don't care enough to click "require" on the Automatch, but I do think it's sort of fun.

DrHades, I really think your view that saying only "hello, gl" is rude, is an outlier here.  The analogy to your little old lady scenario is if I say hello, and the other player says hello and then wants to chat about the game/strategy and I ignore them (which would be kind of rude).  It's perfectly common to just pass your neighbors in the hallway and say hello and nothing else...

My view, for what it's worth...

Greeting:  I almost always say something along the lines of "hi there, gl", unless I'm distracted at the beginning of the game and forget.  If I forget, I'm not offended at all if the other person doesn't say anything.  But, I do find it a little weird when I greet someone and they don't greet me back.

Conversation mid-game:  I almost never talk, but don't mind chatting if the other person wants to.

GG:  I am with olneyce and DsnowMan.  In this community, it basically means, thanks for the game (I do like the Little League analogy too - even if you really hated to lose, you had to say good game...).  So, I almost always say it.  If I really trounce the other person, sometimes I'll say "thanks for the game" (recognizing that the other person might view "gg" as rubbing it in).  If it actually was a particularly great game (maybe 5% of the time?) I will say something more to acknowledge that.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Greatest Isotropic Moments of 2011
« on: December 17, 2011, 05:20:47 pm »
This one was kind of fun.  It's not uncommon to end a game by buying 1-2 curses to empty the curse pile.  But, I've never bought all 10 curses in one game-ending turn.

I started greening earlier, so had a 2 province lead, but his deck was definitely better than mine, and with King's Court, Festival, Wharf, and Merchant Ship in there, there was the potential for an epic turn on his part.  So, in turn 12 I ended up with 13 buys, but only $13.  One pile was gone, and there was only one Hamlet left, and there was only one way for me to end it....

Interesting to hear that some of the other 40+ people don't actually feel like they're "the best" at Dominion.  I sort of wonder how on earth I got to be a lvl 40... I make plenty of mistakes, usually due to lack of concentration (I get easily distracted when opponents play long turns) or discipline (e.g., buying cards that are "good cards" but don't support my strategy).  I would wager the difference between me and a 45 is fewer of those mistakes and the ability to be truly creative in thinking about card combinations.  I'm just not that creative of a player....  This was borne out when Hinterlands was released -- I dropped a bunch of levels, because it took me awhile to really figure out how those cards could work together with others (I kept trying different combos, particularly with Highway, that were....  unsuccessful).

What I do have going for me is probably an intuitive sense of what my deck really needs at any given time (e.g., how many terminals it can support) and how many green cards it can handle (e.g., when to start buying duchies).  And lots of experience playing games, so I've been exposed to more good combos that I've added to my arsenal....

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Ambassador, not so amazing in > 2p?
« on: August 08, 2011, 04:14:50 pm »
I got killed recently in a 4p offline game that had Ambassador on the board.  All the reasons why have been alluded to already, but I really think my critical mistake was not understanding when I needed to shift to buying VPs (because I thought there would be significantly more turns left than there actually ended up being).  One of my opponents started buying duchies and I thought, well, he's killing his deck right now.  But, of course he won.  Also, turns out getting 2 Ambassadors is usually not a great move in 4p.

I play almost exclusively 2p on Isotropic, so I'm not that great at 3p or 4p (I don't have as much experience with how powerful attacks are, I'm not as good at sensing when the transitions to "mid-game" and "end-game" happen, etc.) . I actually don't mind this, though, because when I play offline, it's almost always with more than 2 people.  And, the people I play with don't play nearly as much Dominion as I do, so it's sort of nice for me to have a "handicap" so everyone has a good chance to win (and people still want to play with me... :>).

Game Reports / Re: What did I do wrong here?
« on: August 03, 2011, 04:47:10 pm »
The biggest thing, I would say, is that you didn't have enough money.  Turn 3 = you have $10 total in your deck (7 Coppers, Loan, a +$2 from the Cutpurse), Turn 7 you have $7 total, Turn 9 = $9.  Compare that to your opponent who (if my math is right) had $15 by Turn 9.  Eventually you got to 4 Golds, but it was probably too late.  I might have bought a silver or two in the beginning (in place of a Caravan or two).  Or maybe a Jester on Turn 4 (which would have given you +$2 more and a not-insignificant attack, though, you would have had two terminals).  Caravans don't do you any good at the end of the day, unless you have money.

I have a fondness for decks with 3-4 Torturers in them...  I always feel a little bad for my opponents when I get them going (particularly if they're newer/lower-ranked and it may be the first time it's happening to them).  Sucks to be consistently hit with multiple Torturers every turn.

If your opponent has a Saboteur or Swindler-heavy deck you may not want to return more then 5 Treasuries or Alchemists to the top of your deck.

General Discussion / Re: Dominion addiction interfering with life
« on: July 15, 2011, 05:16:21 pm »
I spend way too much time playing as well... it's easy to say "just one more game", when most of them only last 5-10 minutes.  And, the skill level thing actually just compounds my problem (ooh, I'm a 41 now!  I wonder if I can get to 42....).

Ride it out until the paid version comes out?

This is actually what I'm banking on.  It's a more substantial line in the sand than any of the imaginary boundaries I've tried to create (no games until I do "x", no games today, etc.).  While I'll be sad if/when isotropic is shut down, it will actually be a really good thing for me, personally (as long as I can resist the paid version...).

21
I tend to think that the person who keeps declining should uncheck the darn box for 20 seconds and let their potential opponent get matched with someone else.  But, I think automatch should be for people who are open to accepting most games (if you have too many constraints about cards or levels of players you don't want to play with, then just propose a game).

How about "stackable"?  Cards that work very well when multiple copies are bought (e.g, Laboratory).  I think this may refer only to action cards, but in my head, I usually put something like Venture in this category too.

Like Taco Lobster, I also usually call the set of Kingdom cards "the Board", but I know many people call it "the Kingdom" (which is probably more proper).

Thanks for the warning on "I love you". I just declined a game with him....  Should be an easy one to remember not to play with.

24
In my opinion, BSW's main problem isn't that it's lacking cards, it's that its interface is....  seizure-inducing.  All the animation and sounds and flashiness drove me nuts (though, I should say, if I could get passed the interface, I would be pretty annoyed that it didn't have all the cards).

Anyways, while I'm definitely supportive of RGG's (and Donald's) attempts to make money off an online game, I tend to be in the "I'd rather pay for the isotropic version" camp.  That's partially because I dislike the BSW version so much -- if the new, official version looks/acts anything like BSW, I'm not likely to play it.  That's a big if, of course, but people always fear the unknown, particularly when they really like the known.  It's entirely possible that I will love the new version and be happy to pay for it.  But, I know for sure that I'd happily pay for isotropic...... I (idly) wonder if there would be a way for RGG to operate both versions?  I.e., you pay your $20 or whatever, and you get to choose whether you play on the isotropic interface or the new one.

So, yeah.  All of that being said.  I like (and own) Dominion.  If a new online version helps spread Dominion to a new community of folks that may not have ever been exposed to/purchased the offline version, that's great for everyone involved.  I think the message folks are trying to convey (as opposed to just whining), is, we're hoping that a new, official version doesn't somehow weaken/diminish/alienate the strong community of fans (your fans!) that's been created on isotropic/councilroom/here.

Dominion Isotropic / Re: Decline of civility on isotropic?

Sounds like you have had some not great experiences, quartz.  I do think they're a pretty rare occurrence on isotropic, though.  I've only had two flat out rude people, and they were both fairly early on after I started playing (one person mocked me for losing, the other called me a f*ggot after I won).

On the "gg" after a trouncing thing...  I don't know.  As folks have said above in this thread, "gg" is basically the equivalent of "goodbye" on isotropic.  If it was truly a good game, people will usually make some extra comment about it (e.g., "well played").  So, I wouldn't be too offended by it.  Besides, from the winning player's perspective, what are they supposed to say instead of gg?  Occasionally (very occasionally), I've said something like "sorry that was so ugly", if my strategy was particularly attack-heavy or something.  But, since tone is lost in text, it's pretty tough to say anything else without sounding like you're gloating.
