Dominion Online at Shuffle iT / Re: Creating Dominion
« on: April 13, 2016, 09:17:42 am »
Exciting news!  I'm not sure how I feel about paying monthly fees, but if it's $3/month, I'm sure I can find the money (I'll just beg if I need to. ;))

The most reassuring thing, though, is that we can be certain that our concerns will be addressed by people who sincerely care about creating a format for competitive players to enjoy the game online, and that's really great news.

1. Cornucopia

11. Guilds - This is the toughest matchup for me.  Dark Ages has a lot of neat cards, but a few too many overpowered/singularly strong cards, and I like the overall balance of Guilds' cards.  Plus coin tokens are a great time.

3. Prosperity

4. Seaside

5. Adventures - I feel bad for Alchemy, it deserves more love, but it can't compete with the freshness of Adventures.

7. Empires - Why not?

Vineyard

I love Goons for all of its things, but as an alt-VP card, Vineyard is tops

Sometimes it's your best source of quickly trashing coppers.  And if there's Platinums or Banks or something else fun around, having an extra one is nice.

I just remember that feeling when playing my first game of Dominion ever, and looking at all the cards and seeing the one that gave you +1 of everything, and thinking, "Man, that card is AMAZING."

Then I bought like 2 of them along with other random terminals and got crushed.  Welcome to Dominion.

With what we know now, Market is very okay.  It's a great source of +Buy, and on the right boards, can be a pretty impressive card, or at least an important component in a strong strategy.  But there are so many boards where it seems like it might be good, and there are just more important things to get with your $5.

It's fun with stuff like University and Altar where you are gaining $5 cards left and right anyway, and hey, Market is a $5 card, let's have one of those.  This works especially well against bots.

Let's Discuss ... / Re: Let's Discuss Base Set Cards: Library
« on: April 09, 2016, 12:19:33 am »
Candlestickmaker, fishing villag/plaza and library is a thing.

And chapel to get rid of everything. And goons, maybe.

Library is great. Well designed, has it's usage, but definitely overpowered and 5 seems to me the correct price for it.

Please explain to me how this is overpowered. Pretty much it needs draw to X to be good which you already stated.

With that said, Library is an okay card. No complaints. I think it would fit in well in any set. That's all I have to say.

I think he meant to say it would be overpowered at 4, in response to the original post.  Because Library is fine enough, but certainly not a card anyone would call a powerhouse.

Hey, sorry I haven't said anything.  I got the weekend off from work so I'll be there next Saturday!  Looking forward to seeing everyone.

1432. I'd rank Caravan Guard ahead of Moat, though that may just be from playing in Adventures heavy games where you want something to throw that token onto.

It's weird how bad this card is, since most other Base cards (even the oft-maligned Chancellor and Thief) have their edge uses.  There's just so few reasons why you ever want this for $6 - the best case I can think of off the top of my head is if you have a Gold gainer and can use this to reach more Golds, in a deck where you have trashed your Coppers?  Maybe in a Good-Stuff kind of deck where you can't just draw everything easily?  I dunno, it would be semi-viable at $5; it's still pretty bad.  But at $6 it's like, hey, let's just buy a Gold instead (or a superior component for an engine).

Scrying Pool and Goons are my old favorites. I like Butcher and Highway/Bridge a lot; they're like one tier down.  There's also a certain Empires card that I had a lot of fun with...

I'm gonna try to make it back, but this depends on a lot of other things that I have going on in my life in the April/May zone.

Looking forward to the event nonetheless!  :D

This is all a whole ball of nasty unnecessary drama, and I'll try to avoid taking a side by sticking to the point here.

If Adam is irritated by being "excluded" from broadcasting future championship matches, and nobody seems to be actually against him broadcasting future matches, then what are we even arguing about?

There are some feelings hurt, and that'll have to be addressed by and between the hurt parties.  Aside from that, the League seems to be perfectly within its bounds and any negativity towards the League as a forum for competitive Dominion play seems to just be detrimental to the community as a whole.

Things I like: sports, football, Dominion, board games, conventions, all sorts of nerdy things.

Sharing interests is fun!  Being obnoxious because people like something you don't is not.  I've been there before and it's so much worse than just letting people enjoy things.

Anyway, I can't complain since the Patriots already lost.  :D  Just hoping this one stays close and exciting.

First of all, I just want to thank Adam for hosting an awesome event! I had a good time Dominioning, gamimg, and meeting folks, and everything was smoothly organized and run, so much kudos to you for that. Congrats to roadrunner for wrecking the tourney, even without Scout!

To respond to the previous comments, I think most things seem perfectly fine as is. Entry fee and prizes are fine, though I would be just as ok with $10. It seems preferable to have an extra board or 2 for the semifinals to make sure you have new opponents for every match, but that would depend on the number of sets you have available and the difficulty of that logistically. I was super impressed with your spreadsheet and how smoothly the Swiss rounds went. You seem to have everything in order, so I'd leave it to you to decide whether that's viable. As far as time goes, yeah, games were longer than 2p but I don't think unreasonably so and I think most players moved things along quickly.

As far as the tournament went, I got frustrated with bad luck on one board but of course that was compounded by my poor opening and subsequent overterminaling. I really need to improve my play with Hermit, that card is super high skill and I am not good with it at all haha. I was very impressed by my opponent's play on the Hermit/Hamlet/Bank megaturn board, I really wasn't sure it was worth going for so I edged and ended up caught in between two superior decks with a weird 3p game of pile chicken going on.
The other two boards went well enough for me; my Doctor open on the Lab/Treasury/Cutpurse board got me to a super slim deck right away, and everyone else Cutpursed each other to death while my coppers were gone.  Think I might have been in trouble if everyone else just goes Vault-BM there but that's 4p for you haha. The Page/Witch board was awkward and slow, and I'm not sure you even bother with the Travellers because Witch BM into Treasure Trove and Duchy/Duke seems pretty strong in a board where you can't build much of a deck.

I'm curious to see how others played these boards, or what other weird kingdoms were out there that I didn't get to see.  But I'm definitely interested in coming to the next event. 2p live sounds like a lot of fun.

Edit: writing a post this large on my phone is hard.

70
I will be there!  Reading the match reports of the U-Con tourney got me excited to play some live tournament Dominion.  And if I'm going to get crushed by superior players, I might as well make a trip out of it. ;D

71
Militia seems way too high to me.  An often useful card, but a game-changer?  I dunno, everything else in the top 11 is either really powerful or really important to fight for a split of, or both.  Sea Hag is probably the next card with the biggest argument not to be here, but hey, I had it at #6.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Favorite Treasure?
« on: November 11, 2015, 02:14:37 pm »
Horn is the most interesting to play, so it wins for me.  2nd place is Hoard, which is a lot of fun, and Treasure Trove is also really enjoyable with the physical cards.

73
Had the same bottom 11, except Miser switched with Bureaucrat.  I probably overrated Bureaucrat, but it has its uses in the right situations.  And I'm sure Miser is coming up in the next section.

Taxman should be ahead of Talisman, but we're looking at some pretty fringe-use cards here and splitting hairs.
Taxman is generally better than talisman but when either of them are good talisman is a rockstar and taxman is meh.

Yes, I was thinking of this.  This tends to be the crux of a lot of variation in people's rankings, whether you think being generally okay is more important than being occasionally very good.

Every card has its place. Thief is good in some games with strong trashing but no virtual money. I think Rats is more situational than Thief, it is generally weaker and shines on a smaller amount of boards. I don't think I've actually bought Rats more than a couple of times in my life, and I don't think I've EVER been glad about buying it, nor have I regretted not buying it (then again, of course I didn't play Dark Ages half as much as Base...).

Before people come out and show me games where they dominated with Rats: I know they exist, I just acknowledged every card has its place, I'm just saying that Rats is worse than almost all other cards in general.

The thing with Rats is it really only needs one enabler card (a trasher that can make use of the fact that it costs 4, like Apprentice or Bishop) to be a useful part of a strategy.  When it's the wrong choice it's a big mistake, but you'll find plenty of boards that have Rats and one other card like that.

Thief requires the perfect situation to develop, which is to say that there's no virtual coin (rare), no strategy that can outrace the Thief attacks (rarer), and the ability to play it enough times to get the value you need out of stopping to pick it up.  That's not just one card that affects the value of Thief, but the entire other 9 cards.  And yeah, I'm sure there are some other situations that can make Thief useful, but they are so uncommon to be almost negligible.  If I'm ranking every card 1-237, Thief is only above Scout.

Seems hard to argue with the top 3.  Those cards dominate games in a way that the other 3-cost cards don't.  I went with Masq > Amb > Urchin, but it's pretty debatable in any order.
