Dominion General Discussion / Re: To veto or not to veto
« on: January 22, 2012, 11:57:35 pm »
I like veto mode. While there are certain cards I might really not want to play with, there might be multiple cards I dislike in a veto mode set, and I can't get rid of them all. In that sense it forces you to prioritise, either removing the cards you dislike the most or those which you think the opponent could leverage more effectively than you. I like that decision aspect.

Veto mode also means rejecting fewer auto-matches, the trade off being you'll play more sets that aren't completely to your liking ...

Game Reports / Re: Ignoring Witch?
« on: January 16, 2012, 07:53:03 pm »
What other reasons are there to ignore witch?

What about Remodel and some decent $2s? Maybe it also needs hand-size increasing. I had some success opening Remodel against Sea Hag, with Pearl Diver and Laboratory available...

Thanks for compiling this thread, it is very interesting - it is also helping me to decide which expansion to purchase! (Currently, Seaside)

Dominion Isotropic / Re: delaying games on purpose, how to handle?
« on: January 13, 2012, 10:03:28 pm »
I had a similar experience yesterday. I played against someone (don't know if it is appropriate to name them) who would simply type "faster" during my turns, in an attempt to get me to hurry up. After a few turns this person simply typed "ok", and proceeded to play each of their turns with about 30 seconds between playing each card, and treasures individually. I didn't want to resign because this guy was about 3 levels below me, and I had a good chance of winning (and did win). The game went on for about 30 minutes, during which time I applied for a credit card.

There is a feature to force an opponent to resign if they are taking too long on an individual action, e.g. if they have just disappeared. But there is nothing in place to prevent this system being abused by players who are happy to deliberately drag their turns on one click at a time. You could even imagine that, because of the levelling system, you could increase your level artificially if you pulled this stunt on higher level players repeatedly and got them to resign out of frustration.

One solution would be a time limit that wasn't for a single action, as it is now, but instead a time limit per turn, or a time limit within which you have to play all your turns (I think there is a chess system like this...). A time limit per turn could still be abused, but if you only had say 10 minutes to play all your turns, then there is no chance that you could just drag it out almost indefinitely. Ultimately, it would still be down to your opponent if they want to make you resign at that stage.

Feedback / Re: Slight delay

Welcome to the UK. I suggest don't drive in London - you can probably compare it to NY, hell to drive with congestion, easy to get lost, and hard to find parking. Just take the bus or underground (I love coming home to trains every 3 minutes and cheap too - much better than the SF bay area underground ...). But remember that underground stops are every few streets in London - sometimes it will just be easier to walk shorter distances, London is nice to walk around in the centre. Get an oyster card for public transport; works on the buses too.

As for getting around the country the train system is decent (not as good as Europe but of course much better than the US) and will take you to most places easily. Convenient but a bit overpriced.

I don't know what NY is like but compared to SF, I am always surprised to come home and find that you don't get free internet in cafes etc here ...

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Air travel with Dominion

This has happened to me multiple times! I carry my cards in transparent tupperware-style plastic boxes, and the security people at the airport always stop me if they are in my hand luggage ("what are these?" "magnetic cards?" "it might be a you-know-what") ... ! I put them in my suitcase this time and it was fine.

Dominion Articles / Re: Request: Golem
« on: July 28, 2011, 12:33:34 am »
Golem is really quite powerful!

1) In the early game, Golem will be digging for what limited actions you have - so emphasise buying high impact actions. If you have two high quality actions in your deck/discard and you draw Golem, you are guaranteed to play them both.

1b) As a consequence of the above, buying early treasure can help, since it will get you to high quality actions faster, and won't distract your Golem with mediocre actions.

2) Golem works well with +treasure or +VP. Hitting Monument twice with a Golem for +$4, +2VP is just great. Because you can skip over victory cards, you may also consider using early, high treasure turns for Provinces.

3) Golem can work well with non-terminals. If you hit two, you'll end up with +2 actions, which helps you play any terminals you drew initially (or can draw from some other card drawers). But through chaining, you may end up with more actions than you can use.

4) Golem helps your momentum in situations when you have lots of useless non-actions (copper, curses or victory cards) to skip over.

Dominion Articles / Re: Request : Island
« on: July 24, 2011, 07:41:28 pm »
I like Island a lot as an opener. It is at its best with Ironworks though, and I would play this at any time in the game. I would add that it is good with Trade Route, and I like that opening.

It may remove cards from your hand slower than more brutal trashers, but Islanding Estates sets aside those 3VP, and also returns them to your deck for Gardens-style points later if relevant. If you can't Island an Estate in an early turn, I'd still Island a Copper just to get rid of it, or even Island an Island (with regret). Leaving them in your deck isn't getting you anywhere fast. Comparing it to Chapel (Steward) isn't fair though - nothing (almost nothing) compares well against Chapel (Steward)!

Dominion General Discussion / Re: I have a problem
« on: July 16, 2011, 04:24:48 pm »
The leaderboard is part of the problem I think. Too much pressure to win and not just play for fun. I see my registered but unlevelled friends sign in and despair that my ranking will go down if I lose. Now that really is a sad condition!

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Make up your own card?
« on: June 26, 2011, 11:24:27 pm »
I was thinking about a Chapel variant called Cathedral:

Action, Costs 4
+2 cards
Trash up to 3 cards from your hand.

The reasoning was:
1) Everyone can buy Chapel with their weaker starting hand. Costing 4, everyone can buy Cathedral with their better starting hand.
2) You could say that with Chapel you'd prefer to start 5/2. This card plays similarly but you'd prefer 4/3.

If it allowed you to trash up to four cards like Chapel it might be too powerful. Maybe it's still too powerful because of +2 cards also helping you cycle as well as giving you a better selection of trashing options. The numbers could be tweaked but the idea is it's like a Chapel that also helps you clear on-deck attacks like Sea Hag.

Feedback / Re: Isotropic feedback?

I agree that the preset kingdoms would be a nice addition. Sure, you can specify them using the text box, but that's a lot of typing for a game where we're used to just clicking on stuff. Plus that requires looking up which 10 are in each set.

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: What would you like to see in Dominion?
« on: June 19, 2011, 01:54:37 pm »
Another expansion that uses potions. This might make them less annoying/niche. I read a suggestion somewhere for an expansion like this but with a more kind of black magic feel than Alchemy has, e.g. 'Necromancy', which revolves around interactions with the trash pile.

There could be cards like:

Mausoleum: +1VP per 5 cards in the trash pile

Necromancer: you may immediately buy a card from the trash pile / gain a card from the trash pile costing up to n (put it in your hand?)

etc.

Dominion Isotropic / Re: Decline of civility on isotropic?
« on: June 19, 2011, 01:46:42 pm »
Saying gg, gl every game may be vacuous, but it is civil. Playing a game without saying anything is just a bit unpleasant. You can at least say bg if it was totally one-sided. Oh, and rubbing it in if you're winning isn't very much fun - isotropic needs a 'disable chat' feature if it doesn't have one already.

Goons for sure. It totally changes the dynamic of the game, for the worse I think.

I think Minion takes some of the fun out of the game too, just because it is so easy to spam and is quite annoying. Possession also is quite annoying. These are the three cards I usually reject games for; sometimes Treasure Map too but less often.
