Here's the Amazon link, listed as currently unavailable:
https://www.amazon.com/Rio-Grande-Games-RIO558-Dominion/dp/B07HM7WZT9/

That has a release date of December 14. Damn.

Ahh man, I hope not. Well I have it reserved with a local store, if they email me that it's available I'll post here, assuming no-one else has.

Scholar is like Professor Oak from Pokémon, which is cute.

Like if the first thing you thought when you saw Scholar was "ITS PROFESSOR SYCAMORE!"

I just started playing Pokémon online a few days before the preview, so yes this was definitely my first thought, and the name "Scholar" seemed like a nod to this.

Dominion: Renaissance Previews / Re: Renaissance 'canon'
« on: October 04, 2018, 04:33:17 pm »
Despite there being four members of the Acting Troupe, and it producing four Villagers, I still think of Acting Troupe as just drawing more people to your kingdom, not as laborers themselves.

But then why do they dissapear after acting once?

I'm trying hard not to convince myself that they left because you forced their four children into working for you.

Just took a quick look after a couple of weeks away to see if anything new, and I was shocked!  I really was afraid that Nocturne was going to be last set besides maybe a few promos along the way.  So here of a whole new set with 25 kingdom cards and new things to learn and play with sounds just too good to be true.

Thank you so much Donald X and Rio Grande.  I will be eagerly awaiting the previews and being able to pick this up.

What a great surprise. And I love the theme, too.  I am hoping that there is definitely going to be a card called "Painter" or "Artist" and/or "Sculptor", perhaps "Painting" and/or "Sculpture" also.  "Leeches" would be an interesting name for an attack card. And a thinner named "Barber" would just seem to be a perfect complement to "Butcher".

I love that idea for Barber. 'Just a little off the top please'. Trash the top card of your deck; you may gain a card with up to the same cost.

Some things aren't worth the bother of requesting.

This appears to be a commentary on Gladiator, or at least its online implementation.

Any chance on seeing an update pack for Guilds with the "coin tokens" -> "coffers" cards?  If the new expansion is going to call them coffers, we are going to have cards with both terms in the box unless we rebuy Guilds + Cornucopia
I see what you're saying. We haven't considered it at all. There would need to be sufficient demand, which seems unlikely for rewordings with no new cards or art.

I'd buy it, for what that's worth. I'm already considering getting a second copy of Guilds/Cornucopia mostly for this reason, though I haven't yet convinced myself that it's worth it. An update pack would be a definite purchase.

If we're talking about a pack that has the updated cards along with the 2 new mats, then yeah, I'd certainly buy that.

Yeah this sounds like it would be like buying just a fraction of the Guild/Cornucopia expansion, in a tiny box. That could be a really nice update pack. If you don't have Guilds/Cornucopia yet, and don't care about adding the non-coffers cards from that joint expansion, it could be a good purchase. It also sounds like a must have for completists.

Dominion FAQ / Re: Darker-blue backed cards
« on: July 30, 2018, 11:55:44 am »
That would be really cool, actually.
I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be.

I think it would work better than it might seem at first glance. There aren’t THAT many Kingdom Victory cards and Treasures. Obviously terrible games can happen in there but it could be sometimes interesting.

This variant could be interesting if you first included the 'ordinary' victory/treasure/curse cards that were named by a specific kingdom card, e.g. Silver if Bureaucrat is present, Curse if Witch is present. This isn't necessary but prevents the kingdom from having cards that can't be used to the normal extent. Then, decide how to pick the remaining victory/treasure/curse cards, for example: while you have fewer than two victory and two treasure cards in the kingdom, draw from the 'ordinary' randomizers. I don't remember if there's a better word than 'ordinary' for cards like Duchy and Gold.

You might need an additional house rule for Mine, Rebuild, and a few others though ...

General Discussion / 2018 FIFA World Cup
« on: April 25, 2018, 12:18:19 pm »
Other than the equivalent Euro tournament, this is the only sporting event I care about. As always I am super excited for it. Anyone else?

Through some kind of cosmic intervention I have been between jobs for each of the last three tournaments (before which I was a kid anyway) and so I have been able to watch basically the entire month-long thing each time. This year I am a new father with a job I don't plan on leaving in the next two months, so it will be trickier!

I'm also interested in outrageously ill-informed and premature forecasts, for example: Argentina to beat France in the final. You heard it proclaimed on the basis of no evidence whatsoever here first! I called the winner in 2010 (Spain) and both the winner and runner-up in 2014 (Germany over Argentina) but this time I don't have the same magnitude of gut-feel, so probably I'll do some research and make a better prediction soon.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Favorite Thematic Cards (part 2)

To mix things up, how about the cards/combos whose flavor is delightfully wonky, compared to the ones that are home runs?

What cards do you guys like for the mental gymnastics you have to do to make sense of them?

I feel this way about Duchess. You get to choose whether to gain a Duchess when you gain a Duchy. So, was she running the Duchy as an independent state before I incorporated it into my kingdom, and now she swears fealty to me? Some kind of fealty that is when she also helps everyone else!

This is provided you can spare a card that you feed to the temple and still have $8 for the Province.

Just throw it an Estate.

This made my day.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Favorite Expansions in 2018
« on: April 07, 2018, 02:38:34 pm »
In order from favourite on down:

Seaside
Base (I have 1st edition plus update)
Adventures
Dark Ages
Guilds/Cornucopia
---
Prosperity
Empires
Nocturne
Hinterlands
Intrigue
Alchemy

The top half of the list I own, except for Guilds/Cornucopia which is on my wish list. I don't really have any interest in getting the bottom half.

No, because Smuggler says "up to 6". A card whose cost includes potion is not considered "up to 6" regardless of the $ cost. Whether you have a potion is not important, the card does not require you to check any other cards in your possession. I think this might even be in the rule book too, since it's common for all cards that have an effect that involves "up to" some cost.

Dominion Articles / Re: Duration Draw and Stop Card Capacity
« on: March 29, 2018, 12:01:26 pm »
"A "stop card" is any card that doesn't draw a card from your deck and doesn't reduce your handsize when played, and includes Throne Room variants."

Is this a typo? I think you mean "increase", otherwise e.g. treasures would not be considered stop cards.

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: You may turn your journey token over...

I think he means the card, not the journey token, he should put "this" instead of "it" under the line.

Welcome to the site. Meet Awaclus.

If you do, return your journey token to the supply.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Interview with Donald X.
« on: March 27, 2018, 09:38:40 am »
You’ve got a first edition, wero. My (non-Amazon) second edition copy has “first edition of Intrigue”.

Alright, I'll be returning that, then.  Need to figure out how to do that.

I did check mine and it says "or the first edition ...".

Good luck returning it - I'm not sure if you'll be able to cite it being a first edition as a reason for the return, unless it was actually falsely advertised as being second edition (I couldn't see anything on Amazon that mentioned the edition details). You might be better off just returning it as a normal return.

Another thing you might consider is that first editions might be collectors' items - the first edition of Guilds standalone is on Amazon for about $80 if I recall, and the first print of Guilds/Cornucopia was about $200. You could hang onto it and it might appreciate in value. I'm not sure if the card quality issue that people have been talking about in first edition Adventures would be a problem with that though. Something to consider perhaps.

I see Guilds/Cornucopia back in stock on Amazon. Does that mean the 2nd ed for it is out now?

Edit: Nevermind. Someone posted about it in a different thread.

I just want to make sure it is the second edition before ordering it.

A couple of weeks ago Guilds/Cornucopia was on Amazon for something like $200. It's normal price now (whereas standalone Guilds is still something like $80) so perhaps it's safe to assume that the normal price implies 2nd edition. Nevertheless I'm also somehow managing to hold back just to be sure, even though it completes my wishlist of expansions.

I have bought all of them except for Nocturne, Guild/Corn and Alchemy on Amazon, all are 2nd edition.
I got several from candcgames through Amazon, they were good.

KK

Including Adventures?  I was looking at picking up Hinterlands and Adventures off Amazon, since they appear to be on sale currently, along with Guilds/Corn.

Yes Adventures is second edition, I only started playing last summer.  I only have second editions.  Adventures I bought from candcgames through Amazon.
Kevin

I also just recently got my copy of Adventures on Amazon (I'd rather go to a local store but none had it), on sale, and it is 2nd edition.

The theme is good and it would be much easier to play with this variant.

It's very similar to Horn of Plenty. 'Gain a card costing up to N' and '+1 buy, +$N' are very similar effects (the latter being a bit more flexible). Horn of Plenty has two other pros and one con compared to this though: it also counts non-Actions, and this card is capped at $5, while Horn of Plenty auto-trashes if you choose a Victory card. Considering that similarity I think the price is correct. Compare Familiar ($3P) and Witch ($5) which differ only in terms of '+1 card, +1 action' vs. '+2 cards' which are pretty similar. So this costing $3P compared to $5 for Horn of Plenty sounds about right.

My wife likes running a thin deck; Island is one of her favorite cards. In our first game with Adventures, I selected the cards. "I saw Miser and thought of you", I said. We're still together.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Playing the new Guilds & Cornucopia!
« on: March 20, 2018, 10:17:13 am »
Not sure how I feel about "coffers". It's probably a better design in the sense that you can put it in bold type as a basic card effect. However I wonder why it was necessary to give it a name distinct to "coin token" - I presume "+1 Coin Token" must have been tried but had some problem.

The coffers mat also looks a bit like it might camouflage the coin tokens put there.

Took a quick look online and I can see that some places have a small number of these for purchase. Looking forward to hopefully picking one up sometime soon :)

Dominion Online at Shuffle iT / Connection issues?
« on: March 19, 2018, 12:56:57 pm »
I've only been playing on Shuffle iT since January but I've already seen many instances where the connection seems poor. These range from fairly common minor annoyances (e.g. I click to play an action, or buy a card, and the screen freezes for a few seconds) to less common but more major ones (e.g. yesterday I was waiting for someone to choose what to gain, and then eventually the game said "you resigned"). Because of this new fear of auto-resignation, I am starting to refresh the browser often while playing as a precaution, but I'm not sure if it helps. I don't want to rule out my own connection but I doubt if that's the issue, since in general my speed seems good (I work from home, with lots of file transfers and video conferencing etc.) and I usually connect using ethernet, and I've seen it on Windows and on Mac now. I am using Firefox only.

Is anyone else seeing this? Any workarounds? Thanks!
