I was wondering where on the site it displays rankings. I didn't see it in any of the tabs.

Btw love the setup. Took 15 seconds to learn, and just works.

Help! / Re: Bad luck or Bridge fever?
« on: November 09, 2014, 10:49:53 pm »
The first thing that jumps out at me in this kingdom is that there is no trashing in this kingdom. Smithy gives you pretty good draw, but you have to be careful about the number of cards you have to draw. I would not by any money in this game except Platinums, since money will really clog up your deck. Mine can be nice in a Colony game, but its much better play the same one a lot than to buy more than one. Bridge is key to building the engine, but only to reduce the cost of Fishing Village/Village/Smithy/Cellar.

So I would open Mine/Cellar on 5/2 or FV/Bridge on 4/3. From there you want to build up a lot of Smithys and Villages. You can get pretty good money from Mine, and worry about buying Platinum once you are drawing your deck. You want between 2-4 Fishing Villages and 2-3 Cellars add reliability to you deck. Once you can draw your whole deck, build a little money, and start buying Green after you can at least double Colony.

Here is an example game I played vs. one of the bots. There play isn't real reflective of what a good player would do, but its something. http://www.gokosalvager.com/static/logprettifier.html?/20141109/log.50775a4a0cf28ed55d9d6fd3.1415590587683.txt

I just bought a Talisman in order to quickly empty the Ruins pile.

That's not so bad as long as you are buying Death Carts with the Talisman in play.

Game Reports / Prince and Princess

Here is one of the crazier games I've played of dominion.

The first thing that stands out is tournament. I looked down and see 5/2 split and curse my luck. Figuring I'm behind, I decide to try something a little different; I open Mine/-. This is a pretty lousy opening, but Mine/Alchemist has some synergy. I figure I can get a nice stack of Alchemists. Though I'll probably get a later Province, I should have an easier time connecting it with my Tournament.

Things get off to the expected start with me getting my first Alchemist T6; this is just really slow with me not having a potion off the opening. My opponent spikes a gold T4. I'm not real optimistic about my chances at this point.

I start to build up a nice stack of Alchemists while my opponent grabs a Province T8. He grabs followers on T11, and I feel the game slipping away. I really want to get Princess and Trusty Steed at this point. I grab my first Province on T12, and am optimistic for the first time all game. I win a prize on T12 and grab Princess, I'm going to need some serious cost reduction to get back in this. My opponent grabs Trusty Steed and his 4th Province on T17, and I assume its over.

Time to reevaluate this disaster. I have nearly a whole stack of Alchemists at this point and he is playing Followers fairly often bringing the game to a crawl. Despite being in a terrible spot there are two things on the board that give me hope: Prince, and Vineyards. With that many potential alt victory points, I figure anythings possible. I decide to go for Prince/Bridge and see if I can throw down either a mega turn, or some serious Vineyards. I haven't really played with Prince yet, and didn't realize that it's a terminal, and doesn't do anything the first turn you play it, Ouch! I quickly collide the Prince and Princess, and everything gets easier (Not surprisingly a good synergy). I slowly build my deck over the next few turns, and able to win with 9 point Vineyards, 3 Prince/Bridges and a Prince/Princess for 5 cost reduction.

I really didn't think I would win this one. I think a little more focused play from my opponent may have given him the last Province. This was a pretty fun game all in all.

Power Grid General Discussion / Re: Individual Power Plant Articles

This looks awesome, I've just started reading them, so I can't say to much about them yet. I might have to start playing some Power Grid again.

I do like that you've put some info in about 2 player. I'm always surprised how strategic 2P is, and there isn't much discussion of it on here.

I do like the grouping the plants in order to keep things organized.

Game Reports / A Mess of an Engine
« on: September 01, 2014, 01:29:30 am »
Here's a game with a very goofy engine. It's foundation is KC/Scheme with Steward for trashing. Trade route is the only plus by, and relies on gaining cards with beggar to trash.

I'm not sure if any of the University/Island play helped, but I think University helped kick start the early game.

The 6/2 opening is really strong here if you luck into it. Gold/Courtyard or maybe Alter/Courtyard for the engine. I imagine Alter is a good opener, but have ever tried it.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: newbie question on mandarin
« on: February 18, 2014, 02:58:30 pm »
This is all true, I'm not saying it's as good as Courtyard, but I'm saying its effect on your deck is as good for Big Money as Courtyard is. Given all of this, I think it's much better when bought in the mid-game as opposed to opening with it.

I don't think the put 1 card back effect is as good for Mandarin as it is for Courtyard, since you are choosing from 4 cards vs. 7.

When I've played BM Mandarin, I've always opened Mandarin/Mandarin/Silver/-.  Mandarin seems pretty good as a big money enabler; I would guess similar to Smithy.

I've only played once, but liked it.  I think its pretty accessible for a worker placement game. I think it really only takes one play to understand what you are doing real well.

I think the luck factors do make the game more fun and less predictable.  They keep each game different. I think the some of the strategy in it is pretty subtle, like when to pull your workers, attempting to use the same spot twice to get your own workers back and that kind of stuff. The character cards definitely increase the replay value, and add some strategy.

I also think it would be pretty easy for someone who didn't play the best to get lucky and win.  If that bothers you, I'd stay away from this. I'm kind of a sucker for dystopian future themes.

Help! / Re: Ok. I'm lost.
« on: February 06, 2014, 01:08:05 pm »
I think Monument is the key piece to the Engine here.  It really allows you to score a ton of points with out having to buy too much green.  I would open up Potion/Lookout. The Lookout is mainly to trash Estates, and you want Apothecary ASAP.  Apothecary gets your cycling up very quickly, especially since you can thin out your estates. You will want to pick up a Squire T3/T4 (which ever doesn't have your potion).

Into the midgame, you don't need to use Lookout real heavily, you just want to get rid of Estates, and maybe a few Coppers, but make sure to keep some to use with Stables.  Between Apothecary and Stables it should be pretty easy to draw your deck. Then you goal is to start picking up Monuments/Squires/Stables.  You can probably throw in a Shanty Town, since you can control which cards you draw Apothecary, and can stack your deck to make Shanty Town activate most the time.

I would hold off greening much longer than usual, and instead build up your deck.  I think treasure maps might be decent here as a source of income once you can draw your whole deck, but I think It would have to be based on your deck state at the time.  If you are low on treasure, that may be a good way to get some back into your deck.

Dominion Articles / Re: Chapel/Poor House

I'm with eHalcyon, TR is such a strong enabler for this. I think someone ran a sim that opening Chapel/Chapel was pretty good as an opening, with TR/Poor House.

I ran a TR/Poor House deck against Knights once. It worked real well untill all the TRs in the game got trashed, I was kinda stuck after that.

You mean me, right? :P

Yea, that's what I said  :P.

Doctor seems to be pretty high variance based on what you draw from the top. You can improve that with deck tracking for the first few turns, but that doesn't guarantee that you'll flip what you guess. It feels like you have to guess Copper the first time unless you are sure there will be an estate in the group.

By the way, I do appreciate the effort you're putting into this, funkdoc. I'm sort of on vacation from Power Grid, I'm trying to decide if I actually like the game after all of this, which is really weird. It's really interesting to hear a different perspective, especially about the 03 plant. Our group unanimously hates that plant and would correct a new player if they tried to buy it unless we were playing Russia or something.

Thanks.  I've always saved that sort of hate for the 06 plant.

I wholeheartedly agree with the idea of a sit in. I would suggest ~47 of us there, with games made called something like "Sit in Protest" (which can be counted to see what our numbers are like). Ideally we'd take over the main lobbies to do it, as people are most likely to see them.

You can also be in multiple lobbies at once if you use tabbed browsing, so with 40 some people, we could take over any number of the lobbies.

Deeper still:

We need to go deeper:

pingpongsam is now the apologist meme apologist.

See, that's funny because in order for me to be the apologist meme apologist there had to first exist an apologist meme and I had to, on some level, defend it...
This is funny, because it's explaining a joke. A while ago, on f.ds, a joke that many users didn't understand was posted, and this resulted in discussing the effects of explaining a joke. After that, explaining jokes became a running inside joke on the Dominion Strategy forum.

I think this is relevant here: http://xkcd.com/1313/.

How many Gokoins per year do you consider to be "quite a bit"?

The budget is in Zaps.

They really should have at least maxed out the zaps on development.
