Dominion Articles / Re: Prince
« on: December 22, 2014, 05:22:41 pm »
I would say Prince of +cards (especially Smitty or Oracle) is the best kind of Prince in most games. Much better than Prince of Attack, because in the deck that wants Prince, you will be playing the Attack yourself if you start with a high-size hand, but if Prince plays your Attack, it does not help you play all your other stuff.

I would mention HoP, which can gain Princes for reliability/explosion without that much op cost as buying them (it is not uncommon you are not ready to trash them for green yet the first time you play 8 uniques). Also, Prince helps ensure there lots of uniques in play for HoP.

Critters do not make good pets. Also, if you get Rats, make sure not to invite Lord Bottington to your house, unless you want your precious Princess to end up in the trash.

If you think it's still near 50/50 after the above scenario, I would bet you are highly mistaken.

I did not say that nor I think that. I think and meant more or less what MicQ said in more detail. The percentages only make sense if both players play equally strong. If you play reasonably better than the opponent, and he/she does not get luckier than you for the rest of the games, you would usually win despite the starting Merc/Chapel/Tournament luck.

Getting Mountebank or Cultist or Witch one shuffle earlier is probably similar. I mean, getting Merc one shuffle early is more or less equivalent to it missing a shuffle less, so, ok, you are 1-0 down on the "bad things that happen with Merc" game, but it is just 1-0, not 10-0. Also, discard Attacks are pretty high-variance in general, and Merc especially, so you being initially down by not getting it early has less impact on the final outcome than other stuff.

EDIT: Removed silly comment.

Has it gone away now?

I never noticed it at all actually.

Age does that to a person.

(Was that too harsh?)

Thank you all for your input. Have a +1 for your troubles.

I am currently facing some oscillations, it works for a while, then I get the database error message. Goko is down too, btw, I need a Dominion fix somehow!

Gamesou and me were playing the 5th game of our match when Goko went down just now. We need to decide whether one of us was far ahead enough to grant it the win or to replay (grant a tie seems pretty lame):

Supply: Market Square, Sage, Feodum, Trader, XXX, Baker, Library, Goons, Bank, Peddler
no Colonies and no Shelters

(I don't remember XXX, but it was not too relevant, if gamesou remembers, I will edit this post)

This is the state of the game when the system went down:
I finished 5 turns (1p), gamesou finished 4 turns
my deck: 5 silvers, 3 traders, 1 goons, 7 coppers, 1 estate
gamesou's deck: 2 traders, 2 sages, 3 silvers, 2 estates, 7 coppers

Please, help us decide whether one of us deserves the win because it was a lot far ahead or whether a replay is due.

Note: the posted partial result does not include this game.

For the record, I hate all these usually-entirely-luck-dependent games:
Urchin -- whoever gets Mercenary first pretty much always wins
Tournament -- whoever gets prizes first (usually Followers) pretty much always wins
Chapel -- pretty much game-set-match when it misses your first reshuffle

All of this statements are absolutely not true. Especially the last one. Of course, every game can be lost by a bad shuffle, and Tournament and Urchin are especially luck-dependent, but if you think whoever connects Urchin first or gets Followers wins almost every time, you are 1) seriously mistaken, 2) making it true for yourself by not trying as hard to overcome those situations.

<How to walk>

Such a rip-off: http://expatmadrid.com/2010/01/18/instructions-for-climbing-a-staircase/

(original in Spanish is much better because of extra wordplay)

EDIT: I am so glad I found an English translation to link here.

You need to empty 4 piles with 6 players.
Okay, P4-6 empty the stonemasons.

Why do you even need P4-6? Same solution seems to work with 3.

You don't need attack cards to make the pin. You can do it with Village, Outpost, King's Court and Masquerade.

They can protect and counter-attack any pin with Durations. But that kingdom is definitely some kind of pin-war, with the addition of Possession possibly.

Pretty interesting puzzle to think about...

If the kingdom were not limited to 10 cards, but rather ALL cards from ALL sets and all promos were in the kingdom, what would be the best openers ($4/$3 and $5/$2) and long-term strategy?  Assume 2 player, Colony game.

If all cards are in, the opening can also be $4/$4 or $6/$2 or $5/$3. With both Chapel and Quarry for support, I have to say the Pin is the correct answer, so you HAVE to go fast for lighthouse or some Reaction before you can be pinned. Maybe the best would be to open with a $6 Doctor? I would say you want a LH in play every turn and then some good engine with KC/Bridge and Quarries being the prime candidates to have good pile control. This definitely ends on piles and really fast.

(1) I usually make Upgrades a lot worse.  What am I?

A discard Attack? Poor House?

(2) Having all 10 of me in your hand at once will give you, guaranteed, at least $55 in coins.  What am I?

Bank

(3) I can require a potion to be in supply, even though there are no cards with potions in their cost in the supply.  What am I?

Black Market

There are games that are perfectly played by computers, like Checkers, Sudoku and Where's Waldo*, and people still play those for fun.

*: I am actually not sure if someone programmed an AI to play Where's Waldo, but I am sure it would be extremely simple with today's image recognition capabilities.

Only one mafia game going.  Weird.

Only one mafia game ready to launch, and it can't get started.  Weirder.

No one posting in the ongoing game.  Very weird.

Must be the holidays.

Maybe it's Maybelline.

Actually, the Argentinian state and both religions I know of (Jewish and Catholic) describe marriage as a contract, not a contraction of both people into one.

Of course, the level of "togetherness" of each couple is personal. I know couples that I think share excessively to the point of making it impossible for each person to be without the other, and couples that feel like business partners to my eyes. And I am sure my own couple looks a lot like the former to the later.

That sounds like a bully playing a Torturer engine.

Game Reports / Re: Upgrade Rats
« on: December 12, 2014, 05:05:28 pm »
I think you want Upgrade, Rats and Militia, and later Forge. Forge rats into Provinces FTW, or even upgrade Prov into Plats to buy Colonies. It will surely beat any BM.

EDIT: You want to open Militia/Silver because not getting Upgrade is a catastrophe and you can be left with too many Rats.

W. Eric Martin thought the medieval theme had been done too much, and argued that Dominion should have a restaurant theme. [Before it was published.]

There is probably a reason of why the medieval theme was done so much.

Real friends are the ones that say happy birthday even if they cannot get the date from Facebook.

Can't they maintain their own profiles AND get a joint one for the romantic stuff?
