No. Basically all dominion advice does depend on the Kingdom.

Edge case:

"On a Witch board, if you open 5/2, is it better to open Witch/Nothing, or Curse/Curse?"

That question does not depend on the Kingdom. ;D

Of course it does.  You said, 'On a Witch board'.  That's a specific kind of kingdom on which your question depends.

Actual question that doesn't depends on the kingdom:

When I use my Copper to buy a card, do I have to return it to the supply/bank like in other games (Monopoly, Settlers, Power Grid...)?

Yup, I'd agree, that one doesn't.

Now, I'd hate to make this a silly semantics argument, but ftl was talking about advice, not basic how-to-play questions.  I've tried, but I've not yet come up with a question that asks for an opinion on the best play that doesn't depend on the kingdom.

My first try was, would you rather have gold or silver?  Seemed obvious, then I remembered Feodum.  There are cards that refer to, by name, Estate, Duchy, Province, Copper, Silver, and Gold, so the value of each of these varies with the kingdom.

Here's your worst cards Kingdom:

Adventurer, Thief, Scout, Transmute, Pirate Ship, Secret Chamber, Pearl Diver, Rats, Counting House, Saboteur
Ugh. You cant go Pirate Ship/Thief because of Adventurer, so maybe BM? Just…BM?

Um....  you can't go Adventurer because of Pirate Ship/Thief.  You certainly don't want to go BM with those two out.  And I'd also say you don't want to go Thief because of Pirate Ship...

Looks like a board on which Pirate Ship could work.  I'd have to try it, of course.

Did he say "Blessed are the cheesemakers"?
What's so special about the cheesemakers?
Don't know, but speaking as a cheesemaker, I like being special.

Trash a card from your card. Gain a card of a different type costing at most $2 more.
If it's an...
Action - +1 Action
Treasure - +$1
Victory - +1 Card

Reminds me of a Transmute that doesn't suck.

Except Transmute 1) costs potion 2) can turn estates into Gold, so this wouldn't EXPLICITLY better...but pretty much yeah.

I was thinking more of the changing types through an upgrade.  Yeah, it's not really exactly similar.

Are the kingdoms static, then?  I might be misremembering, but when I had to replay one, I thought the kingdom was slightly different.

As long as you're moving boards around, can I ask why the Dark Ages Preview is a child board of the Guilds Discussion board?

aren't there more than 12 provinces in a 6 player game?

Yeah, in a 5 player game you have 15, but I can't remember whether 6p adds 3 more or if it stays at 15.

6p is 18.

Gold Rush - Action
+1 Card
+1 Action

If you have three or more Gold Rushes in play, gain a Gold.

(An alternate take on the 'treasure map' idea; they're easier to line up and can be lined up repeatedly, but you need to line up more of them for a smaller reward.)

Do you intend that if someone plays four of them, they get two gold?  And if five, three?

If not, you might want add text to indicate that gold is gained during cleanup.

If you're sure about the grid size, you could try this list.

Hmm.   That has some interesting interactions.  You could play it to reduce costs by $P, and in the process your opponent increases costs by $1.  (Or more, I suppose.)

I like it.

I'll be sorry to see Boycott go, but I can see why it's tough to make work.

Any ideas what will replace it?

And to add to the confusion, would any duration cards you played on your last turn reduce the cost of Peddler to put it within range of being gained through Border Village on a Possession turn?

Rouge is slow, but I think it is better than Graverobber at least.

I don't think I understand why Rogue is better than Graverobber.  They both cost $5, they both take a card from the trash costing from $3 to $6.  Graverobber additionally places it on top of your deck.

Isn't that a good thing?

Other weird stuff I've spotted in the Finnish translation:

  • Cultist is translated as 'Okkultisti' (occultist, obv). These don't mean quite the same thing, do they?
  • Rats is just 'Rotta' (a rat). This is not the only case where a plural English card name has been singularized in Finnish and, admittedly, keeping the plural form would have made the card text a bit awkward. But man, I wouldn't want to run into a rat that can single-pawedly destroy provinces and colonies.

Cultist and Occultist are certainly different in English!

And I've often wondered, couldn't Rats have been Rat Swarm, instead?

« on: February 08, 2013, 05:23:09 pm »
Just tried this, and by pure chance, ended up with Graverobber in the kingdom.  So I picked up Hermit two extra times, and pulled the trigger on turn 16 with 7 Madmen and 4 Hermits.  I won the Market Square split 6-4, but that meant I could only buy 7 Provinces.

However, I was intentionally playing against a weak A.I., so I don't know how well this might work against a real opponent.

EDIT:  Oh, and I forgot to mention the wacky opening.  I had a 3/5, due to my opponent's Noble Brigand attacking, so I actually opened Hermit/Graverobber.

You could add 2 or 3 piles and just include enough markers to cover the extras.

I like that idea.  Or, and this is just off the top of my head, you could add one extra pile per player, picked by each player, and initially mark those piles as not yet in the kingdom.

It would be a sort of anti-veto.

I've also printed out new cards for Tax Collector (with putting the gained card on deck), Floodgate (with setting aside the Floodgate), Boycott (with one Boycott pile instead of three), and Exchange (with +2 Actions), but won't update the OP until I've tested out those changes. I'll be without internet access from the 10th to the 17th, but I hope to get some playtesting done over that period. NoMoreFun, thanks again for the various suggestions!

Awesome.  This is by far my favorite fan-made expansion.

What was the change to Boycott?  I don't recall seeing a post about it.

So I sat down to play a few Solitaire games. Here are a few things I learned.
1. Only buy one of each card, it won't work otherwise.

You can purchase multiple Golem.  It ignores itself, so you'll always find Scheme and Herbalist.

EDIT: Which is useful to note for other Golem-using decks.  This one only needs one.

Barracks effectively takes up two Kingdom card slots in the "box", so it's got to be a star of the set. Hopefully this version works out. Any opinions on the cards just from looking at them? This community has good instincts, and as always I appreciate any feedback.

Looks like a good improvement.  Especially removing the choose two from Conscripts.  However, now that Barracks allows you to pick up two Conscripts, have you considered how many Conscripts the game should have?

I'd suggest more than 10.  Maybe not 20, since they to return to the Conscripts pile with every use.  15 might be good.

But there's a link on that page to the right one, and that does show space for all cards.

I know, it was a response to this
I like it that way because then we can have a difference between natural and whole numbers.
Even when we do include zero as a natural number, we have a difference between whole numbers and natural numbers.

What's the difference?

The definition of Natural numbers is either starting with 0 or 1 and going up.  Two possible meanings, but I'd argue it is still well defined.

The definition of Whole numbers can be either one of those, or it can include negative numbers too.  The problem is that the word Integer is taken from Latin, where it means whole.  So Whole numbers are not well defined.

Ever heard of negative numbers?

Negative numbers aren't natural.
