Goko Dominion Online / Re: Adventure mode in desperate need of rehaul
« on: October 26, 2012, 01:02:15 pm »
While I'm very glad to hear that adventure mode is getting an overhaul, I've just been spending however many zaps are needed to turn it back into an even game.  I play enough games against live opponents that I've got the coins to spend on zaps.

However, I have learned one very very important lesson from adventure mode.  The strength of silver instead of copper is huge.  Having a curse instead of an estate?  Hardly anything at all.  Just two victory points, and if I play well, I can easily make that up.

This has taught me the right way to play handicap Dominion...  adjust the starting victory cards.  Messing with the starting coins is too large a handicap.

uh i've been wondering this for a while but if you spend a zap do you spend the zap for the stage or for that single game?

If you add an extra zap (or two or more), you will always have that extra zap on that stage.   So, if the basic two aren't enough, you can add one and try again.  Then add one more and try again.  You never lose the zaps.

Marauder's Map
Action - $4
Trash this and another Marauder's Map from your hand, and say "I solemnly swear I am up to no good." If you do, you gain 4 Spoils, putting them on your deck. All other players gain 4 Ruins, putting them on their decks.

That's not bad, that's awesome.

And with your one buy, grab a Copper, but reveal Trader for a 19th Silver instead  ;)

With the fortress example, you'd get even more.  You would effectively play Trader 6 times, getting 4 Silvers each time for a total of 24 Silvers.  But hey, I was trying to modify Qvist's into a beneficial use of KC-KC-Beggar-Beggar.

So you trash Fortress 6 times for 24 silver, then still get to play it with KC, getting three more cards and six extra actions?  Dang.

I'm afraid I don't get SirPeebles version at all. Why would playing KC-KC-Beggar-Beggar-Trader have any significance for Fedoums? Trashing Coppers with a Trader doesn't gain you any Silvers.

KC-KC-Beggar-Fortress-Trader wouldn't do any silvery good either, by the way - the Fortress would have to be KCd after the Trader(s).

You play beggar with trader in hand to gain silvers instead of coppers. So you'd gain 18 silvers with KC/KC/Beggar/Beggar/Trader.

But not 18 silvers in hand.

You still gain 18 silvers for feodums which increases their value by 6 each...

That's very true.  I was thinking if you could manage to get KC/Trader/Silver/Silver/Silver in a later turn, you turn 3 silver into 9.  Which feeds Feodum even more.

From Intrigue only: Pawn, Minion, Torturer, Nobles?

What is harlekin?  I'm guessing that's the German name for a card, but I can't figure out what the English name is.

33 right?

24 is correct.

Permutation of 4 is 4! (That's 4 factorial)

Trashing your hand means trashing each card.
he
This is the mistake. Trashing your hand means trashing your hand. "Put your deck into your discard pile" doesn't mean "discard each card in your deck", similarly.

Edited: I pulled up the rules for Dark Ages where it says how it works.  Nevermind now.

Crazy thought, probably wrong.

Trashing your hand means trashing each card.  Those are simultaneous actions, so you can choose the order they occur in.

Trash one of your choice.  Activate Market Square, discarding Market Square and gaining a gold.  Continue trashing what's in your hand.

So, what's wrong with this?

Rules Questions / Re: Watchtower and the lose track rule

After reading Watchtower again, I realized it says 'when you gain', and not 'if you would gain' or some variation of.

So, I think I was wrong.

Watchtower gives you a choice; when you gain a card, you may reveal Watchtower; then either trash the card or put it on top of your deck.

So, if you use Watchtower to trash a card...  you're no longer gaining it, and you cannot use Watchtower to do anything further to it.  It's not a matter of losing track.  You had a choice.  You can't choose one way, then choose again the other.

The second part here, can you still discard Market Square to get that gold, assuming you choose to trash?  If you never gain the card in question, can you really call it 'yours'...  I'd say no.

TfB: Trash for Benefit

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Grand Market vs Platinum

#1.  I can't see going for Grand Market with $9 in hand.  But then, I think of Market & Grand Market as slightly over-rated.

#2.  Platinum & $3 card, you mean?  Depends too much on the game.  If it's time to go green, buy a Colony.  If it's too early (I judge this by whether the high value high hand seems to be an incredibly lucky draw), I might go for something else.  Maybe Plat. & $3.  But then again, an incredibly lucky draw to score 10 victory points and just a single dead card?  Probably worth it.

Dominion Articles / Re: Request: Countering Ill-Gotten Gains?

I did read the article.

Ambassador & Masquerade work to dump curses on your opponent.  That's great.  Trader works to turn that incoming curse into Silver.  Also great.

Trader needs to be in hand, and Ambassador/Masquerade work after the fact.  Other trashing just dumps Curses, other Cursers try to empty the Curses first.

Oh, and City is good if none of the above can help.

But Embargo kills the whole concept, for a $2 card.  You can always pick it up in the opening, and shut down IGG fast.  (Not that I would automatically take that approach unless I've played against someone enough to know that if IGG shows up, it will be rushed, and I'm sick of dealing with it.)

Dominion Articles / Re: Hard counters vs. soft counters
« on: October 17, 2012, 06:07:11 pm »
Fair enough.  There's going to be a fuzzy line in any of these.

To mention my example again, against Pirate Ship, even losing a Copper you are happy to lose isn't a real benefit.  The player with the Pirate Ship got a +1 counter on his Pirate Ship.

How does one define Masquerade against Witch?  You might get to pass that Curse right back... so, benefit?  I'd say so.  Someone else might not.

I'll assert that trying to define hard & soft is too controversial.  Another classification is needed.

Dominion Articles / Re: Hard counters vs. soft counters
« on: October 17, 2012, 05:48:07 pm »
I've been thinking about this issue for a bit, and this is what I came up with.

There are three types of defenses against an attack.  (By attack, I am not necessarily limiting myself to cards of the attack type, but instead any action (which is not necessarily a limitation to cards of the action type) that creates an effect I do not want.)

Mitigating: Reducing the negative aspects of an attack.
Nullifying: Canceling the effects of an attack.
Benefiting: Creating a benefit.

As an example: Versus a Pirate Ship or Thief, Secret Chamber mitigates the attack.  You might be able to save a gold/silver/plat from being lost, but in a treasure heavy hand, you might still lose something.  Moat, on the other hand, nullifies the attack; you will not lose anything.

Cards like Watchtower nullify attacks via gaining cards.  Trader does more, and can turn a attack by Witch/Sea Hag into a benefit.

I know anyone here can come up with dozens more examples.  My point is that a hard counter versus soft counter is not well defined, but these three categories of defense, IMHO, are.

Turnaround
Action - $30

---
When you buy this, trash this and each player puts his deck into his discard and passes his deck to the left neighbor.

With the deck having been put into the discard, there is no deck to pass.  Did you mean that?

Ah, I see what you mean.   Picking up two Pearl Divers instead of one Scout (assuming available +buy) is less likely to hurt you, even if it may not benefit a lot.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Combo: Pearl Diver and Mystic

I can't help but think that Scout would pair better with Mystic.  Yes, Scout is more expensive, but you get to look at four cards.  Pearl Diver just looks at one.

Does anyone know what Possessing an Explorer would do? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that the Possessing player would gain the treasure and so the value of gaining in hand would be totally lost.

I would strongly suspect that the Possessing player would gain the treasure, but into their discard pile, not their hand.
