That's fair enough, for some reason I omitted to mention engines as an exception.

The player who saves his Hovel has just as much junk as you do until that first Province buy - then he has less.

You would have to have that Hovel in hand when you gain your first Province to do that. As Hovel doesn't really contribute much towards that first Province, chances are Hovel is not in your hand.

I think if I had to burn $2 and a buy, and a Hovel sits in my hand, I would by that Estate. Maybe not in Turn 1/2.

I mean, there are a number of reasons why Hamlet is great. It's one of the best support cards for draw up to X and Menagerie engines. It can give +buy. It doesn't necessarily deplete a card from your hand if you don't want it to (e.g., you have enough actions and buys already). It self-synergizes in an odd way because it gives +buy and the card itself is so cheap, so you can get the +actions into your engine faster with Hamlet than with other villages. I still personally think it's a tad overrated, but there's no doubt that it plays a crucial role in many decks that most of the other $2 cards do not.

I would like to add: The discard hurts in engines less than in BM games, as more often than not you draw the occasional wrench which you have no trouble discarding.

Native village is way too low.
Fool's gold, hamlet, and crossroads and pawn are too high.

I mean, why does anybody like hamlet anyway? It's like worker's village, but you have to discard 2 cards.

Well, yes, Horse Traders is like Gold, but you have to discard 2 cards. And it's 2$ cheaper than gold. Spot a pattern?

(Horse Traders is like terminal Gold, but it gets you an extra card from time to time, which for the sake of argument I'll have it even out the action it eats.)

"Hey, I just bought you, and this is crazy,
But you're Nomad Camp, so top-deck maybe."

"Five Nomad Camps in hand collided so bad"

On the fifth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me,
FIVE NOMAD CAMPS

Our family has a German version on an international Christmas carols record. The German line there is "Fünf Füllhörner" (five Horns of Plenty). So for our kids, Dominon is associated with this song ever since Cornucopia came out.

Can we get a prod for ipofanes? I don't think he is playing anything else so he might not check the forums very often.

cough I am here. My move yet? Spreadsheet says Jorbles.

My wife would kill me if I played an online blitz game and not a real game with her.
Sometimes I covet my neighbour's wife. My wife, after three games (and my assassination of her Napoleon), quipped that she doesn't need to play a game to try to make the best out of limited resources. (She does like Village and Terry Mystica, though.)

My Dutch is failing me on this one; I cannot make sense of this sentence. "This case fits precisely a number of CDs." Could they care to reveal which number that is?

I'm guessing that the secret chamber at the bottom of the list says more about the players ranking the cards than the card itself. Not many people seem to play it well. Beggar seems quite strong too, particularly in multiplayer, and Vagrant is considerably stronger than pearl diver.

Vagrant, in a messy kingdom with looting and sans trashing, will be in the same league as Wishing Well.

So if the kingdom is just right it will be as good as a decidedly average card?  That's not exactly a great advert...

Well, if Vagrant would do what measly Adventurer does, it would be vastly overpowered.

If it competes with a decidedly average card costing $1 more, it can't be total crap. I think it's correctly placed above Pearl Diver, as other than its submarine cousin it doesn't get weaker when played multiple times.

Are Ghost Ship fests not considered slogs? They play differently, but they can make Duchies look attractive too.

Hastings have never been past the first round before, and quite frankly, the place is a shit hole that has very little going for it.

The town hosts one of the most venerable annual chess tournaments at least.

He could have just designed Dominion, moved on to the next game laughing and swimming in the money a la Scrooge McDuck.

That's an odd way of spelling Martin Wallace.

Surprised that "Broke/Cheapskate and not that into Base Set Only or Begging" isn't an option!  That is 95% my reason.

The other 5% is that I don't use Chrome or Firefox Betas, so it's laggy for me.

That is about my reason too. "I already bought every single Dominion expansion." Ok, I did not buy the promo cards.

Inception Leo:

"I've been testing individual Dark Ages card in the base set. Band of Misfits is really strong; with both Village and Smithy in the kingdom, it becomes almost strictly superior to Laboratory."

"... And with $4, I buy the last Smithy."

Vagrant, in a messy kingdom with looting and sans trashing, will be in the same league as Wishing Well. Also, it harmonises with Mystic.

As an aside, if you find a crappy card at the botton of the deck, and you have Mystic in hand, will you move the card to the top?

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: My Second Card : Hypnotist
« on: January 03, 2013, 08:52:33 am »
The unique cost makes this pretty hard to judge, but the card looks hugely overpriced for at least 2-4 player games. In 2 player, it's a $4p which plays you possibly one card out of probably very little choice that was one that fits your opponent's strategy and not necessarily yours.

Yes, definitely overpriced, especially when compared to Golem. It may be as strong as a Golem in a 4p game, but at the cost of 6+P.

Pawn enhances a lot of different deck types, and hurts in very few (blocking a slot for a useful reaction card). EDIT: and as Davio correctly points out below, blurring your knowledge about the next card when facing a hand attack.

Minion/Library types of decks have already been addressed, Double Tactician decks are to be mentioned in this context. Engines do not crave for pawns, but have some fondness for them when they have actions to spare or when its the only source of +buy. Alternate VP and heavy greening? Heck, those decks love copper, so how can a pawn hurt, and you are not likely to draw actions dead with +card + action, and have I mentioned the extra buy that gets you another copper, plus being the obvious target for a three-pile finish?

Pawn is very rarely a card that I buy when I have $3 to spare. But I rarely buy nothing at all with $2 when pawn is on the board.

I have a plastic box with three rows from German retailer Bauhaus (does not branch into the Netherlands). It does just about not fit all expansions (I'd estimate it'll hold 2100 cards), and it comes with only three dividers. On the plus side, it is cheap (about 8 € so you may consider buying two).

EDIT This is it.

After a bit of searching I found this solution which might be flexible and large enough.

You say it should be fun to lose. Do I need to say "torturer"?

I still don't get why people hate Torturer so much. I hear all this talk about being "Torturer-pinned". How does this happen?

As Torturer draws 3 cards as opposed Witch's 2 cards, it's easier to chain multiple Torturers than multiple Witches.

I have printed myself some cards using Jonas Havreglids' suggestions as well as BGO 2.0. I modified Hammurabi such that instead of -1 MA, you can hold one military card less in hand. Not enough playtesting so far, but this slightly less impaired Hammy should be in the range of the other Leaders' prowess.

Also, I have to actively avoid both Confucii entering the game.

Bishop is usually not a great opening buy, but chapel obviously is. So I am confused - are you for or
against child baptism?
Baptism - Action, $2
Name a card. If a card with that name would be trashed this game, instead, it goes to heaven.

Shouldn't this be "this turn", or is this in line with the permanent cards to be introduced in Guilds?  ::)

ipofanes discards 2 Age II military cards.
ipofanes produces 4-2 food, 6 resources and 3 science, drawing 2 military cards.

Should be more science than that; but the spreadsheet got it right.

1900
Pass political phase, discard 2 Age II cards
Play Ideal Building Site, build Bread and Circuses
Upgrade Philosophy --> Alchemy
Upgrade Bronze --> Iron
Upgrade Agriculture --> Irrigation
Take Opera from card row

I should have 8 resources then.
