Dominion General Discussion / Re: Translations
« on: May 18, 2015, 03:51:57 am »
I didn't anticipate the translation of "Band of Misfits" with "Vogelfreie" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vogelfrei  but I must say that I quite like it.

Also, translation of "Forager" with "Mundraub" is brilliant.

I know it's been a couple years, but doesn't "Mundraub" mean "food theft"?  How is that a brilliant translation of "Forager", which is someone who pokes around the undergrowth looking for random food?

For what it's worth, i think it's a horrid translation.

Translating skills come into play where there is no direct translation. There is no German word for "forager" (dict.leo.org suggests "Wildbeuter" which is closer to "poacher"), so you'd better look for another fit. Both foraging and Mundraub is done out of necessity, and petty food theft was treated (German law prior to 1975) as a misdemeanor rather than a deliquancy when the thief was hungry. The site http://mundraub.org maps sites where food can be collected legally. As the picture does not show someone who pokes around the undergrowth, the German translation arguably fits the context better than the original. Hence, brilliant.

... Double Tac deck with Hamlet, Menagerie, and Horse Traders. I was playing with my friend who was new to the game and it was just plain silly.

Did he become hooked? Sounds more like a deterrent to a beginner to me.

The reaction is a clear winner against discard attacks and more like a consolation against other attacks.

If the attack in itself is weak (Spying Pool), the consolation can outweigh the attack and be a winner, too.

« on: May 13, 2015, 09:15:13 am »
While I don't care for theme in a game, I would like to take issue with:

What theme in any game is not "pasted on"? ... You could take any great game and completely replace the theme with any other theme, and it would work just as well.

Sometimes mechanics emerge from the theme, and if they don't, they fail. Any bike race game should incorporate the idea of drag, peloton, breakaway in a way, and many wargames have almost identical rules and only differ by campaign. A Twilight Struggle reimplemented in Middle Earth would feel wrong, even Fields of Arle would not transfer 1:1 to, say, Kingston, Jamaica. There are simulation games, and great ones among them, that draw a lot of their rules from their subject matter.

EDIT: additionally, a good theme can provide easy-to-remember rules. I can't count how often I called "Ares grants an army" instead of "you get an army because you bid highest on Ares".

So, how's Europe treating you, ww?

He suffered the aftermath of the train strike, but yesterday his camera was still with him. He doesn't treat Europe very well in return, as he gave me a good beating, twice, while introducing me to the Adventures expansion.

(Also, you always get in the back in cabs.)

Not necessarily (in Germany you get to choose), but you are right that passenger in back seat and empty front seat is a strong sign that passenger is a child or riding a taxi.

EDIT: It is currently used as a visual cue in a TV commercial to instantly clarify that it's a taxi scene even though the passenger is unlikely to voluntarily be crammed in the back seat when he could choose. (The passenger is Dirk Nowitzki.)

This may hold for standard achievements, and even then, grabbing the 8th and 9th achievement is often better than anything else.

Einstein tried very hard to nullify a couple of signings. Afraid of competition to his violin?

Huh? Grabbing achievements can often be the right thing to do.

For some reason Google choose to "update" their authentication process using GoogleID. Log in as a registered user therefore is not possible anymore for non-Yahoo users.

Is there a chance that the process be adapted for isotropic?

I more and more tend to think that Watermill is a trap card. You remember the windfall events, mostly pulled off by your opponents. Yet there is a 4/10 chance per age to get stuck (counting from age 3), and only an initial 2/10 chance to progress to the next age. Consequently, I don't set my bet on Watermill unless it goes along with a card like Lever, which lets you have another chance at getting rid of a non-bonus Echo while drawing a bonus Echo in the process.

How would Quête affect a Torturer pin strategy? Getting one Gold for two Curses is still Copper density, plus you lose the option of discarding two Curses to the third Torturer.

You still need to spend a buy for it, so unless you have more +buy in your deck than you need, that's not very good.

Gaining a Gold when you have less than €6 in hand is often an attractive option.

If you thought a double Ambassador opening was good before…

That's one way to take care of Ambassador collision.

Now I'm starting to wonder if Ambassador/Stonemason(Ambassador/Ambassador) is a good opening on a board with Baker and Quest.

…You still want your Ambassadors to line up with pairs of Copper or Estate, right?

Plus if you have an Ambassador/Ambassador/Quest collision, you'd still have to decide between using Quest to gain gold against using Ambassador for shoving back those coppers/estates. Either way, at least one card remains useless. I really don't know what the benefit over an Ambassador collision sans Quête would be.

Black Marker definitely synergises with Adventure cards as long as they are not to be named.

I had never achieved all five decrees; you would have to draw so many figures for it that it would take the repeated sharing of some harmless dogma like Ice Skates. To have all colours in your pile of achievements would be wonderful.

antony 3 - ipofanes 1
echoes: Chopsticks + Almanac = lots of score for ipofanes' win.
efc: I get an early tech start (including Almanac) while ipofanes gets a fat board, but not enough to catch up.

I don't think Almanac needed special mentioning in either game. I invoked its dogma thrice for a total score of 4, while antony didn't activate its dogma effect at all.

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: The Opposite of Mint
« on: January 16, 2015, 09:11:18 am »
To really be the opposite of Mint, it should trash actions when you buy it.

Before I clicked I thought "Does it gain a copy of the treasures you played in order to buy this?" (Gain two Magic Mirrors buying one ...)

I don't know about you guys, but when I think of adventure, I think of flying in the air.

That's the fifth direction the teaser text speaks of, so it's covered.
