so who won?

I would hate to spoil the results of Monster Engine vs. Tunnel Nonsense, but you can watch the match-up here.

I should probably switch my pic but... I love the Farmland so much... So I'm kinda torn
Farmland is weak. There‘s absolutely no reason to pick such a weak card as avatar.
I concur.

Are we getting upvotes just for using weak cards as our avatars? I'm in.

You don't stand a chance against Mic.

Dominion Online at Shuffle iT / Re: Undo Trolling
« on: December 08, 2017, 11:58:21 am »
I bought a Province I thought was for the win, but I was on an alt-vp strat and didn't realize Wolf Den made it for the loss until I saw the point counter.  My opponent denied the undo after being granted one earlier in the same game.

I wouldn't have asked for that undo and instead been mad at myself for not seeing the interaction. If my opponent asked I'd probably grant, but not without feeling annoyed about his indiscreetness. I certainly wouldn't fault anyone for not granting it, let alone consider it to be an offense of such gravity as to consider it trolling.

it makes the game miserable garbage a lot of the time when it's out.

I know another card that would be a perfect fit for this list.

But is it something we want to play all the time? Repeated games of? Pseudo-competitively? I think not. What we've seen of Nocturne so far will probably make it one of the least-liked expansions, out of all of them. It's not bad, it's okay -- it's just not rising to any level of greatness. I'd rather play with Alchemy than Nocturne, mmk?

I don't get this criticism at all. Hexes are at worst a Cursing or Saboteur-like effect, which are/were regular features of Dominion. Why does the fact that Hex is often less bad than the worst case suddenly make it an unattractive concept?

Personally I'm very excited about Nocturne; it looks more interesting to me than Adventures (but not Empires). I too would rather play with Alchemy in the end, but that's because currently my favorite expansions are, in this order: Dark Ages, Alchemy, Empires, Nocturne.

I am not sure that hexes are the most luck-based attacks.

There once was a card in Intrigue
Whose presence ignited a krieg
Where a card bought to play
Would be swindled away
And replaced by a useless misbreed.

Imagine a Tactician that still stayed out for an extra turn, but got all of its bonuses on the current turn. So…

FastTactician: Action-Duration, $5
Discard your hand. If you discarded any cards, +5 Cards, +1 Action, and +1 Buy.
(This stays in play an extra turn.)

Tell me to my face that that's weaker than Tactician.

I wouldn't call it weaker, but FastTactician is much closer to Minion than it is to real Tactician and hence a totally different card. Like Minion, it's often good in situations where Tactician isn't and vice versa.

E.g. it's worthless with cards that like a big hand-size like Mint, Forge, Madman, City Quarter, Bank and Fortune; it doesn't combo as well with Outpost; it can't be used for money spikes (whether it's in a slog where you'd happily give up a terrible turn for a decent next one, a Colony game where you want to spike Platinum early or Colony+something late, or engine game where you use it to get an early Forge/Expand or your first KC) and it's much poorer at making weakly trashed engines reliable.

Lucky Coin [...] doesn't make me feel awful spending it in the opening like Cursed Gold.

I envy you.

There are subtle shades to language.

As much as 50 in the current context.

I have had this notion that there's an association between being a great player and playing fast

What? Except for Mic they're all dreadfully slow.

The one term that has always amused me is "Good stuff deck"; it's generally about as good as the "Democratic People's Republic of Korea" is a republic run by the Korean people in a democratic fashion.

14
I am a fan of calling these decks Province Rushes. But what if there is one and you're competing with Castles? Maybe Province Rush variant?

Points rush.

I agree. Chapel gets a mention in the 3,000 ft section, but the concept that trashing less useful (not just Curses) cards is (usually) a good thing -- and sometimes a VITAL thing -- is a HUGE step in playing this game well, and it's not obvious to many less experienced players.

Case in point:

I have a dozen or so text files saved with advice from opponents who just crushed me. The oldest one is from the 2nd of September 2012, it's quite amusing:

Quote
...
21:14 SheCantSayNo: e.g. why do you buy a Chapel as your first move with three coppers, rather than, say, a silver?

Also, how does blaming bad luck for all losing come into play in all this? I feel like bad luck blaming is a hurdle inside ever plateau.

Embrace it; man can wish for no better servant than the scapegoat.

As long as you're not giving up on your continuous process of looking for improvements you'll be fine. There only ever is a problem if you try to make yourself not feel things you are clearly feeling, and let the subsequently unresolved emotions obscure your vision.

Definitely include strategy on the wiki.

Imagine a wiki.chessstrategy.com that only describes the history of chess and the movement of its pieces. Even Wikipedia, which the last time I checked did not focus exclusively on chess strategy, contains plenty of entries about chess openings and their merits.

On behalf of Mic Qsenoch, who is too shy to tell you himself, I want to compliment your choice of background art.

There was no data about MF subscriptions because those weren't eligible for a 1-year subscription.

20
There just isn't a market for more fine-grained levels. Even on Goko/MF, where people could purchase as little as half of a medium-sized expansion, almost everyone owned either nothing or everything.

Please don't use splitters, the term is horrible and deliberately obfuscating. There is nothing being split, hence there can be nothing doing any kind of splitting.

Village, on the other hand, has been dutifully functioning as a pars pro toto since the beginning and is immediately clear to everyone because it corresponds to a simple base card.

Good luck!

I'd be happy to contribute with an essay on Silver and when not to buy it.

We also have commentators: Philip and Mic Q will try to provide some insight + entertainment.

It's a great combo; Philip provides the insight and Mic the entertainment.
