Dominion Articles / Re: Stop buying Duchy over Gardens

I feel like this is a problem with having the VP counter on.

I especially see this with Wolf Den -- players seem to buy doubles of some cards just because they don't like to see their score go negative, even though there might be an easy way to trash those singletons sometime later in the game (or it'll be easier to buy a second copy) and having two of those cards is more harmful.

I've been playing Empires for a while, but I guess I never had or don't remember a game where Aqueduct and Ambassador (and also Swindler) were on the board until now. I hadn't realized that you can gain the VP tokens even if it isn't your turn. I Ambassadored a few estates, and of course my opponent got the VP tokens. The game ended when my Swindler hit a Province, and my opponent took 3 VP that were sitting there before I could buy a green card as I had intended. Good thing I was already fairly far behind.

How did you pay off the debt with only Capitals?

Adding to the above, by the same logic, doesn't it go against the spirit of Smithy that it can draw three Action cards into your hand, without any way to play them?

Well, anyhow, this is why we have villages.

Rules Questions / Re: Reaction cards
« on: June 01, 2017, 10:59:44 pm »
The trickiest one to understand, I think, is Lighthouse / Champion. You can't let the attack affect you even if you want it to (like Minion's discarding), but you can use a reaction card (like Horse Traders) despite blocking the attack.

ah, there was Crossroads on the board too. Otherwise no other payload. So not exactly strict BM, but.

Played a Wharf-BM game with Wall and Mint on the board. Loaded up on treasure cards and draw, and on the last turn after emptying the Provinces, bought Mint, trashing 15 treasures.

58
Yeah, I'm not sure trashing as a benefit for collision is such a good idea. The first person to have them collide gets the benefit, and thereafter the changes of collision are even stronger. Mercenary has a similar problem: if you're lucky enough to have Urchins collide early and use Mercenary to start to trash down, you'll do this even more often than the player that couldn't, especially with a larger hand to choose from.

Rules Questions / Villa / Wine Merchant
« on: March 10, 2017, 11:32:06 pm »
if I have a Wine Merchant on my Tavern Mat, and it's my buy phase, and I have $6, and I buy a Villa, can I discard the Wine Merchant from my Tavern Mat prior to returning to my Action Phase?

The wiki seems to say no (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Villa), but this did work on Shuffle iT.

Is it the only card in the Supply to have an asterisk?

61
It's still pretty clunky. The implementation of the mats, in-play durations, Attack-Durations, Journey Token, -1 Card/Coin and trash in MF is still a lot better than what Shuffle iT has so far. There's still a lot of awkward clicking underneath the log for ordering effects and otherwise optional things.

They did fix the Name-A-Card issue, so everything is *playable* right now, but a lot of the above really gets in the way of the gameplay -- it's hard to remember if there are any Wine Merchants on the tavern mat unless you're used to checking, and you have to remember things like Haunted Woods, etc since there is no visual reminder if you did or did not block the attack.

Still waiting on Inheritance (and Stash).

All that said, it does not make my computer's fan go like crazy like MF's did. For that and that alone this is a much better implementation already. (also, having Empires and the 2nd Editions at launch is great, but this seems like a pretty low bar considering how old Empires is)

Rules Questions / Re: Villa and Wine Merchant?

I would visualize it as a kind of goto structure..

while(buy_phase)
{
  // do things you do in your buy phase

  if(villa)
    goto(action_phase)

  // etc.
} // this is the end of the buy phase

You don't to that end since you have escaped from the 'buy phase' structure.
Eugh, gotos.  But yes.
Ugh, a while loop
Seriously haven't used one of those since college, or when the language forces me to

So you haven't used one in a... while?

Advisor / Harbinger

Play a bunch of Advisors, your 'good' cards will be discarded, then draw them back with a few Harbingers.

64
Maybe dumb question, but it is fair to talk about losing ranks since the last list since there are so many new cards? Maybe I don't understand the stats here.

Good thing Thief is gone so no one can steal your subscription.

EDIT: except for Noble Brigands, that is.

Let's Discuss ... / Re: Let's Discuss Landmarks: Orchard
« on: December 15, 2016, 03:05:31 pm »
I was the opponent who got beat up in the Cultist vs Orchard game, and the Ruins counts didn't matter at all, it wasn't a close thing where 4 or 8 VP mattered. It was just (in hindsight (probably in foresight too :)))) clearly better to play with Uni and pursue Orchard points.

Indeed -- as I mention it was really about University, but the larger point I make here about Orchard is that scoring this way is very much resistant to a Cultist onslaught, which is otherwise a very strong strat. You can get enough points from Orchard to make other scoring somewhat irrelevant. Some Landmarks play this way, like Museum on a board with more than 10 cards sitting in Kingdom piles (e.g. split, black market, ruins, etc)

Well, turns out Orchard is amazing. I just played a game where my opponent opened 5/2 on a Cultist board, and I think I ended up with 8 Ruins. Now, it helped a ton that it was a University board and I picked up plenty of Action cards even though my deck was terrible, but I ended up with 36 points on Orchard and won the game.

Did you get super lucky and have 1 or 2 sets of 3 of a kind in those 8 Ruins?

Yeah, I did. But you're right, it won't always happen.

68
Workshop is still horribly underrated, even worse than last time. Do most people seriously think that it's worse than Develop or Loan?

Yeah, this is beyond me. There are a lot more $3s and $4s worth getting now, especially with all of the cantrips added in the second editions.

I'm interested in playtesting -- my current desktop doesn't run MF, but my laptop does. Windows 10 on both.

- Super loud victory/defeat end-of-game sounds
- The annoying chime every time some 12-year-old genius types something in the global chat
- The lack of audio and strong visual indicators indicators when it's your time to do something (reveal reaction, pass card, choose advisor discard, etcetera)

Gosh, I miss the blinking taskbar signal from Isotropic. I hope the new client has something similar.

Let's Discuss ... / Re: Let's Discuss Second Edition Cards: Patrol
« on: December 08, 2016, 03:59:27 pm »
Scout is clearly better because it's non-terminal. If you have a hand of 5 Patrol, you get to play 1, and get at most +7 cards for the turn. If you have a hand of 5 Scout, you can play them all, and get up to +20 cards for the turn! With an action left to play them!

They are both better than King's Court. If you have a hand of 5 King's Courts, you get to play them all and get no Coins or Cards.

Only 90-93% of the time

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: What if all piles scaled with players?
« on: December 08, 2016, 03:05:05 pm »
We all know Victory cards scale with more players - it's 8 cards in a pile for 2 players, and 12 if you have more.  This is ostensibly to have more to go around for all players.  How would they game be affected if Actions and Treasures also scaled that way?  Say, 10 for 2-player, 12 for 3, 16 for 4, or something like that.

Probably the easiest way to answer this is to observe what happens in an actual 3 or 4 player game. Try playing one of those with Magpie.

Hitting "Done Discarding / Gain Nothing" on EVERY Artificer play...

Is there a better way to do this? Default to no discarding unless you press a button saying you want to discard?

Yeah, the crazy battery use is probably towards the top. But also the ridiculous placement of 'end actions', 'end turn' buttons, etc.
