Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Idea for fan expansion - Dominion: War
« on: November 07, 2012, 08:59:03 am »
I think the best way to price/design Advisors is by comparing it to Lookout.

Quote
Lookout - Action - $3

+1 Action
Look at the top three cards of your deck. Trash one, discard one, and put one back on top of your deck.

Now, drawing a card is probably worth $1 more than trashing a card. So I think it's probably balanced without the $1. If you're going to add the $1 I'd probably price it at $5.

Palace $11

Pick an action card. Play it as many times as you like.
Quickly degenerates into a 'who can name the highest number' competition with Monument. Which, admittedly, can be pretty fun if you know your absurdly-high numbers. (I'll play the Monument G(5^^^^^5) times...)

Ok, so this is a really old post, but I just now noticed it for the first time. Considering how much my brain hurt the first time I tried to comprehend Graham's Number, I'm going to go ahead and not even start to think about the number that you have just written...

Or, use the Ackermann function: I'll play Monument A(g64, g64) times.

Or, you can use recursion as well: Letting WTF be the number of times gman314 played Monument, I'll play it A(WTF,WTF) times.

Alright. I think I fixed the Black Market problem.

Memento
Action - Treasure
$4

Choose a card you have in play. If you could normally play that card now, play this as if it were that card.

That's a much simpler wording, and I think it deals with funny combos and things pretty well.

Really? Is that how the wording looks? Screw it, then I'll just go back to the original wording :P

Yeah, good point. At any rate, I'm pretty happy with how it's turning out. Does everyone agree on a $4 price point?

Okay, look. The point is that it's not a Throne Room. One of the main features of this card is the delayed effect that you can get. Sorry, OneArmedMan, but that's a completely different card.

Another thing about this card is that if you have a cantrip in hand or something, it's not a dead card if you draw into it, unlike Throne Room. This card is sometimes better than Throne Room, but it's often worse - but it can affect Treasures too. I don't want to let people play Treasures in their Action phase or anything.

Also since it's a Treasure it probably needs a Treasure worth. So how about $0?

Memento
Action - Treasure
$4

Choose a card you have in play other than this. If you could normally play that card this phase, treat this card as if it were that card until this leaves play.
Worth $0

This means that if you choose an Action card during your Buy phase, Memento is just a Memento, and so you can activate Horn of Plenty with it - but that's about it. Not sure about the wording on the second sentence - it seems a bit wonky...

Yeah, I've just been using bold Times New Roman for the costs and things.

I actually toyed with the idea about having "This is that card until this leaves play" instead of "Play this..."

Would that be better? That gets rid of double-type shenanigans. I totally didn't see the duration abuse, cause technically those cards are actually "in play".. hm.

Also it's not/can't be "Play that card again" - what if you want to target a Highway? No benefit? No thanks.

How's this for a card?

Memento
Action - Treasure
$4

Choose a card in play that can be played this phase.
Play this card as if it were that card.

35
I'd charge $3 for the first two, and $4 for the third.

Yeah, of course you CAN track how much of everything you have, but can you really concentrate on your own actions and whatever during everyone else's turn? It's probably easier in a 2-player game...

I just thought that making it a Duration would be better because then you can keep track of how many have activated. As Davio said, it's hard to keep track if you have multiple choices to make.

This seems like it should be a Reaction - Duration to me. Also I think it's a lot less broken if you do it this way:

Gazette
Reaction - Duration
$2

If this is in play at the start of your turn, trash this. If you do, choose one: +2 Cards; +2 Actions; +$2; or trash two cards.
----------------------
When you gain this, set it aside.
When a player gains a Province, put this into play.

The only problem with the wording of this card is a player. Does that include you? If it does, you could spend a turn buying 3 of these and one province, for a somewhat mega-turn next turn... although come to think of it, as it is, you can actually get it into your discard pile now :3

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Nyarlathotep card playtest

i'm a little unclear about how it works. is it only beneficial if you have played a '+2 Actions' card before it so you can send it round a second time? is the gain a card, ANY card, like including a Province? how is it beneficial to you if you don't have '+2 Actions' cards?

i kinda like the Reaction part though.

Well, you have to play it to pass it - so it actually leaves your hand right? +2 actions doesn't really make any difference unless you have two in your hand. And yes, it is ANY card. Which is why it makes your opponents think really carefully about whether they want you to have +6 VP (or +10 VP/Plat in a colony game), or just take the 2 curse hit on top of the deck. That's why I priced mine at 7, cause it's either a really powerful card for you, or a really powerful curser, like a double Hag.

As for cost, Maybe it should even be something like $5*, and have the condition, "This card costs $1 more for each card worth $6 or more in the supply."

What if your opponents never want it to get to you, even at a higher price? Something like this:

Nyarlathotep
Action - Reaction
$7

Pass this card to the left. If you have played a Nyarlathotep this turn, when this card is passed to you, gain a card.
------------------
When this card is passed to you during another player's turn: Pass it to the left, or gain it, and gain two Curses, putting them on top of your deck.

I can't figure out how to make Trojan Steed a thing, though...

But the thing is, with Throne Room, (at least on the Isotropic implementation), you can choose to play none of the Action cards in your hand. After all, who knows whether you have Actions in your hand but you?

People's Court
Action - $3

Choose three Action cards from your hand. Play them each once.
That's actually not too bad! I'd might be it if it was 2$.

Yeah I actually like this quite a bit too. Ought to say "up to" though, otherwise it's tough to make it work ever.

Naw; "do as much as you can".

But what if you have Action cards in your hand that you don't want to play? Is it like Throne Room, and you just don't have to choose one?

Thrown Rune
Action - Reaction
$2

+1 Action
Choose a card costing $1 or less in play, and play it twice.
---------------
When you play this, you may trash every Thrown Rune and Ruins you have in play. If you do, gain a card costing up to $2 more than the number of cards you trashed.

Soldier

+1 action
+$1
Trash this card. Each other player puts a wound token on their wound mat.
--
(This card is not in the supply)
Any time you would trash this card, return it to its pile.

Any particular reason for this to be "when you would trash" rather than "when you trash"? (Cf. Fortress, which also goes to an unorthodox location when trashed.) And if it is "when you would trash", why not just have the instruction be "Return this to the Soldier pile" instead of "Trash this"; it's kind of perverse for the card itself to give an instruction that it knows isn't going to be carried out ever.

You're right; it should be "when you trash", but since it has a cost ($1*), you can trash it to things like Remodel or Forge or some other such trashing card, in which case it should say "When you trash this, return it to the Soldier pile".

It's not that the cards are bad per se, I want the cards to be quite balanced/playable. Just, I want the cards to be fun and whimsical, you know?

Mid-Summer Gala needs to be a little more specific (how the cards are dealt, do people get to choose what cards they want to put in their hands etc), but the last part of discarding your hand hurts quite a bit. I wish you can somehow get to retain your hand after the redistribution, since that'd be more fun.

For Timeshare I'm not too sure whether you'd get to hit the 5VP often. My gut says no but it's a duration card, and the 5VP thing could only be in effect during it's first turn (since game ends after the clean up phase, when the duration effect ends the card is cleaned up too). That remains to be seen.

So the deal with Mid-Summer Gala is that you deal one card to each player starting with yourself; I originally thought of having no discard but as it stands, you basically want to play it as the last card in your hand. A kind of "finale", if you will. The version without discarding was way too hard to price, I thought it might be worth at least 7 or maybe 8, cause it's a great pin just by itself.

I've tested out Timeshare a little, and that's basically the idea. It's not often that you hit 5VP, but it's a very cheap 5VP if you are sure the game is going to end before it becomes your turn again. Or, if you want to be able to stall the game so it gets back to your turn. It's pretty fun.

I was really hoping for:

Dethroned Room:
Choose an action.  Play it 0 times.

Normal Room:
Choose an action in your hand. Play it once.

I may well just include Normal Room in the set; it actually combos rather well with things like Peddler, Conspirator, Horn of Plenty etc. Maybe I could call it "Absconding Room".

Just a completely wild guess, but is it that they have what could be considered to be another different card on them?

Like, for example, Smugglers has a Merchant Ship in the background, Warehouse has a Wharf in front of it, Caravan has an Oasis over to the right, and Cutpurse has a Warehouse in the background? :P
