@paddydoors: You can set your matchmaking to matching you with other solo players only in the language preference selection of the matchmaking tab (no idea why they put out there of all things)

Thanks!  I didn't know that.

But I'll probably still not check it... I'm not opposed to playing with groups of 2 or three... it's just annoying when the other team is 4-or-5 man coordinated. =(

And yes, you should play some more =).

Actually, I'll do the same... Except I'll just post my steam profile.

Add me for dota goodness.

I would rather not just play solo games -- a lot of my games recently have been against 4 or 5 person parties, and it's frustrating because they are obviously more coordinated.

That being said, I really really love playing dota.  Seriously thanks to those who encouraged me to try it.

It can't as a whole.

But you can take parts of it and make them into a movie.

You know, like they did with the bible?
The bible also consists of several different stories and books, yet enough movies have been made about bible stories.

Good one though ? But fair enough, I could see a movie about the fall of Gondolin or Feanor and his sons.

The most obvious movie bits from the Silmarillion are probably those that have been published as self-contained stories: the Children of Hurin (the tale of Turin Turambar) and the Akallabeth (the Downfall of Numenor). The latter has the advantage that you could actually end it with a massive battle scene and the victory of the Last Alliance - lead it right into the LotR prologue.

I could totally see an effective movie being made of the Silmarillion -- especially if it was a composition of a bunch of short films.  Sorta like the Animatrix, but each short being longer.

Probably wouldn't garnish much for the big screen, so I'm guessing it wouldn't make it there.

And, TBH, if it isn't going to succeed on the big screen, then it probably isn't going to be made.  Except in lower-quality than what we've come to expect from the PJ movies thus far.

Sorry robz, barry is a goko alt of mine.  The "b" is silent, fyi. (as is the "y" on 19 September every year.)

RE: our game... You caught me at a bad time -- I was unfocused on our game because my dog has just been run over.

By my cat, actually -- my cat ran over my dog.  More like jumped, to be completely accurate.  It was the funniest thing I've seen in a long time, and I laughed and laughed.  That's why my play was so slow, because I could hardly breathe and concentrate on the game for long periods of time because I was laughing at how my cat ran over my dog.

Anyways -- my apologies.  Will you forgive me?

Then again, I found Firefly to be horribly overrated ...  Nowhere near as good as Angel.

You're dead to me.

You should just curse at me in fake Chinese.

Too late already did.

But then I praised your bravery in Klingon...
... and quickly translated an old prophecy on a tablet left behind by the Ancients that describes an upcoming shower of wealth that shall soon befall you if you push seven (or eight) (or nine) symbols in the correct order.

So I'm not sure where it all ended up.

This is a great idea, but usually the people without #vpon or #vpoff are people who don't visit the forum anyway, so a lot of them won't see this.

That doesn't matter. It doesn't have to be universal to be useful. Everyone who does this can get a (small) benefit from it, and I (and people like me) get a small benefit for everyone who does this.

I don't set my table either way, but I have it set in settings to vpon, so if I play against an opponent who dislikes the point tracker, they have the option to turn it off.

If this is for two-player then you are exactly the kind of player I'm making this suggestion to. Currently I wouldn't sit down at your table, because I wouldn't know if you were gonna #vpoff me. If you followed my suggestion I would sit down at your table. (For multiplayer it doesn't work of course, because the vpoffer could be some other player anyway.)

I thought about this problem a lot back in the iso days.  I had a weak preference FOR playing with the point tracker (at that point part of the Dominion client itself -- I'm not referencing the deck-tracking extension from those iso days).

But you could only choose auto match to find games where the point tracker was "allowed (or no preference)" or games where the point tracker was "disallowed (or no preference)."  Essentially, all players were pigeon-holed into one of three categories:

I must have the point tracker, and will only play an automatched game with it enabled.
I will have either the point tracker or no point tracker, and will play an automatched game with it enabled or disabled.
I must NOT have the point tracker, and will only play an automatched game with it disabled.

However, I think a slight modification would have been perfect for me:

I must have the point tracker, and will only play an automatched game with it enabled.
I would like to have the point tracker, but will still play an automatched game without it if my opponent has a preference against it.
I will have either the point tracker or no point tracker, and will play an automatched game with it enabled or disabled.
I would like to NOT have the point tracker, but will still play an automatched game with it if my opponent has a preference for it.
I must NOT have the point tracker, and will only play an automatched game with it disabled.

My ideal, back in the iso days, was to have this "weak preference" indicator.  If I indicated a strong preference, all of my matches would have the point counter.  If I indicated a strong preference against, all of my matches would not have it.  If I did not indicate a preference, and I was matched up with someone else who also didn't have a preference, we would play with no point counter. =(

Whereas, if I had a weak preference for the point counter (line 2 from my modifications), then we would still play with the point counter since my opponent had no preference either way.

I guess what I'm saying is that I had a preference, it just wasn't a make-or-break deal that iso pigeon-holed me into if I wanted to play with the point counter.

...and I've been impaled through the right thigh with a bayonet.

Please say this was due to a civil-war reenactment gone wrong, because that would be hilarious.

I dunno. Might be more hilarious if it wasn't related to anything prior to the 19th century.

Nope, not a reenactor.

Correct, not related to the 19th century or before.

And the bayonet wasn't sharp when it went through...  Ironically, I wish it had been. :( :( :(

I've had heart surgery, plastic surgery, arthroscopic surgery to correct a partially-dislocated shoulder which I had been walking around with and using for the previous six months, and I've been impaled through the right thigh with a bayonet.

But I've never broken a bone.

^^^ all of this is true, not even joking.

I seem to remember an impassioned discussion about this back in the iso days.

Maybe the highly controversial "hi gl hf" part of the discussion was an integral component there?  Can't remember, too lazy to go hunting.

Also, is a premature "gg" roughly equivalent to a premature "/thread"?  I'd love to hear thoughts on the matter.

Golden Sun and Shining Force - those two are incredibly awesome old-school RPGs.
If you like those you might also like a lesser known title Tactics Ogre: Knight of Lodis. It's my favourite game of the kind, it's more combat oriented than the two (and combat is more complex and very tactical), and less world exploration, but in style, at least to me, it is reminiscent of the two games and it also kicks ass.

So much yes.  I have replayed Shining Force 2 about once a year for the past 15 or 20 years.  And speaking of the Ogre Saga, I began replaying Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen recently, and I found a dream crown on stage 2 :D

I LOVE OGRE BATTLE.  I have replayed that game several times in recent years, each time looking for a different ending.  I can't believe you found a crown on stage 2!  Just one Princess totally reshapes the game so much, it's nuts.  Way to go!

This picture confuses me.  What is going on here?  I'm a flower with a stem and theory is a different-colored stemless flower?

So I tried the link below it, looking for explanation -- nope.  Please help!  ???

The flowers are pansies. The link is a fan made card that at one point was called Flower Seller but not anymore. Tying it all together is too much to ask of pretty much anyone, though, so don't feel bad. Now that I've explained the joke is it more or less funny? I think less but then it came into the world rapidly approaching zero humor, anyhow.

Wow, you managed to be offensive in two entirely different ways now. Congratulations.

Wow, only with your post, asper, did I figure out that pingpongsam was calling me a pansy.  I guess I'm slow, lol.

Either way: I'm not a pansy.  Take that! I just gave you quite the timely and forceful comeback, pingpongsam!

I'm okay with a dog, but not in the house.  I was raised out in the country where loads of people have "outside dogs."  Dogs who don't live in the same living space as their family.

My wife wants a little dog to keep in the house.  Something she can cuddle up with in her arms.  I keep telling her that those aren't dogs, they are barking rats, but she just rolls her eyes.  I'm obviously a very sensitive husband.

Over 99% of the time, Rebuild is fastest.

101% of statistics which quote 99% as a number are made up out of thin air and grossly wrong.

99% of integers between 1 and 100 are not 42.

Depends... are "1" and "100" inclusive bounds?  If not, your statement is false.  Wow the pedantry is strong with me today.  :-[

Incorrect. 42 is the answer to everything.

Life?  The Universe?  Those just get shuffled under the carpet, eh?  :-[

For the curious you can look for images related to Grimm Season 2 Episode 15 called "Mr. Sandman".

and now a happy picture:

Thereby emptying the Gold pile for the win! ;)

Why would you reveal them?

It's a Gardens game, and Greg's opponent is in the lead and Gold is the last pile to empty.  However, that Oracle drew more actions for Greg (when he had +actions to spare) and he ended up buying something during his buy phase that put him over the top.

At the time the Golds were gained, they were gained "for the win," (i.e. in such a way so that gaining them ensured that the game would end and at the time they were gained, the gaining player was in the lead) but it turned out that the other player lucked into a last-moment win instead.

It's been a while since I've edge-cased anyone on here... sorry, just needed to flex that edge-casing muscle, I'm obviously a bit rusty.

So, did you win? More importantly, was it fun?
What heroes have you been playing?
I really need to get back to my computer that's able to run dota 2

I did win -- now I've played 6 games versus humans, and I've been on the winning team with 4 of them.

In the pub games, I have only played Witch Doctor and Viper.  I'm open to learning others, but I'd hate to be in a real game with a hero I know nothing about.  So I'm playing medium level bots and randoming.  Pretty crazy.

I really right now know absolutely nothing about the strategy of picking for team composition.  There is so much to learn, I'm kinda overwhelmed.

Your girlfriend is right.  It was luck.  Girlfriends are always right.  If you disagree, you may lose your Dominion partner

I +1'd this and then realized, no, someone I want to be a partner is someone willing to tell the truth, explain why it wasn't luck, then keep on playing.

+1 ahoppy for funny
+1 you for truthiness

everybody gets some love  ;D
