I corrected it just as you were posting :P

Another question...is it better to trash a Silver and gain 3, or trash a Copper and gain a Silver during your Buy Phase (in the early game)?

I wish Trader was named something else, to avoid confusion with Horse Traders, especially since both are reactions.

Absolutely gorgeous artwork on the first two cards.  Hinterlands definitely seems to have an interesting feel that goes beyond its "cards that do something when you buy them" theme.  I don't think I've ever been so eager to try a Dominion expansion.

Tournaments and Events / Re: Any GenCon or WBC news?
« on: August 08, 2011, 02:35:32 am »
I'm sad I missed this.  Would have been good to actually meet some other players.  It's geographically very close, but I knew I'd be busy around this time.  4 player Dominion is far more of a crapshoot than 2, and being the first player can be huge.

I've heard third-hand that there was some... trouble... at the RGG Dominion tournament.  I imagine WBC organizers will have to be on the lookout for shenanigans--card-palming, false shuffles, etc.

Interesting.  Can anyone who was there evaluate this?

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Any Gossip About Fall 2011 Expansion?

I've been racking my brain for awhile trying to figure out a new mechanic, or a new theme that the new set could possibly be.  Other than new hybrids like, Attack-Treasure, or Duration-Treasure, I can only think about cards that strictly affect only cleanup, or cards that are extremely expensive and so powerful you usually only get one or two and it changes the rest of play.  This is only a few months away, so surely (no Airplane) we'll be hearing more soon.

Arbitrary maximums that just find strange behavior in likely very bad and non-representative play?  No thanks.

Perfectly fine when speaking of isotropic on the whole.  I was more interested in what my personal bests were in these areas, is all, even just for novelty's sake.

Good to be back after being gone for awhile.

Good points all, that's what I thought.  It was a situation I hadn't encountered before that the rules did not necessarily clarify.

I'm not sure that playing low-rateds really inflates your rank much if at all. My gut would have said the opposite. But I could well be wrong, especially as I don't know the precise standards by which this stuff is actually calculated.

My general formula for how I'm doing on isotropic is:

Define the sequence of opponents' levels by x_n, and my level by y.

For each win, add x_n.
For each loss, add 0 if x_n>=y, and add (x_n-y) if x_n<=y.

This is no one way reflective of the isotropic method (it clearly ignores that losing to multiple people at my level or higher will drop me), but it's my personal benchmark on how I did that day.  This way, I make sure I keep the competition where it should be if I'm to move up.

If you're that concerned about your level dropping, play under a different screenname with abandon.  No one will know it's you.

We will now. From now on I will assume that anybody I play who is not called "Eagle" is actually Eagle in disguise.

It might be me in disguise ;)   I've been known to do that at times.

We lasted about a month and a half before a GCW thread.  Not too awful.

I just cheated on isotropic...played a game of dominion elsewhere.

I love isotropic.

It's always a strange feeling coming back to real life Dominion after being on isotropic so long.  ZOMG, I'm playing with honest to God cards.  Cards!!!

Council Room Feedback / Records
« on: July 22, 2011, 12:05:52 am »
I was wondering, if it would be possible to calculate records for individual players, and perhaps, isotropic as a whole.  For example, most buying power in a turn, most games played, most turns a game lasted, most cards played in a turn, most victory points in a game, and perhaps, your personal record by level of opponent.  This information is not always useful, but it would certainly be fun to see.  I would offer to help code this, but it's been quite awhile since the little computer programming I had as a Mathematical Statistics major.  :)

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Must-Buy Cards?
« on: July 21, 2011, 06:25:28 pm »
Another thing to keep in mind is that what makes a card a "must-buy" is relative to the other cards in the kingdom.  The reason I always go for the +2 Cards +1 Action cards is mostly due to the fact that they work well in any kingdom.  But there are some cards people consider "must-buys" that are only such when the kingdom supports it.  This is the same criticism I have of the list of "best" cards or the list of Best Openings on councilroom.  Helpful overall, but you have to consider the entire situation.

I saw that Chapel/Treasure Map is Level +4.  I thought it was a good idea to open with that.  Except, I trashed four Copper on my next turn.  I was hoping to use the remaining three to buy a Silver, except I had $2 on the next eight(!) turns.  Thankfully, there's a resign button.

The probability of me actually drawing three copper on almost every turn after that is only 5C2/8C5 (approximately 18%),  I'd expect to need 6 +/- 5 turns to actually get that Silver.  I'm thinking if you open Chapel/Treasure Map, you're better off Chapelling your entire hand only if you have Estates in it...

Dominion General Discussion / Treasure Map in mid game?
« on: July 21, 2011, 03:25:05 pm »
Today, I had a game with Treasure Maps and other cards that made a fairly good draw engine.  I considered going for the Treasure Maps mid game, but was hesitant because I was afraid they would either clog up my deck when I couldn't find a match, or the four Golds I'd be rewarded with wouldn't help me that much at that point, since I could gain a Gold or more per turn anyhow.

Does anyone have any examples of games where they bought Treasure Maps mid game or late, and it worked out well?

Whenever I'm on a losing streak (or a standstill as I currently am), I play with abandon on another screen name.  This way, I'm less nervous about choosing the wrong cards or f'ing up.  Not that I'm that nervous to begin with, it's just that when I'm not playing on my main name, I do things I wouldn't normally do, and there's something about doing this that mixes things up.  Then, once I feel like I've shaken the dust off, I'll come back to Axe Knight.

This may be some overvaluing, but the only cards on my personal buy every time last are the three +2 Cards +1 Action---Lab, Alchemist, and Hunting Party.  I think it's a combination of wanting them, and not wanting my opponent to have more than me.

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: printing custom cards
« on: July 20, 2011, 01:17:11 am »
Sleeves feel wrong to me.  Considering how many Dominion cards there are now, I'm not sure they are cheaper and easier, either.  It would certainly work if printing just isn't possible, but I'd really rather have the cards.
There are people who don't have their Dominion sets sleeved?  Crazy talk.  Go with sleeves.

I don't have mine sleeved.  Call me crazy, but I kinda like how my set is worn.  It makes me feel like a true, veteran game night host.  And it's not like I can't go out and buy another one if I really wanted to.

As for "swingiest Dominion cards"... I think Familiar and Swindler have to be the champions.  Treasure Map is an obvious pick, and Sea Hag gets up there too.  Ambassador and King's Court merit mention as well.  In general, obviously powerful cards (especially attacks) and cards which muck with opponent's decks are going to be swingier.  And Treasure Map.

No mention of Saboteur?

Saboteur is way too weak to make a difference in almost every case.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Any downloadable deck generators?

I second that.  Not only does Dominion Shuffle have almost everything you could possibly want to customize, but the designer is quite good about keeping it up to date.

Or you could just use the sets of ten suggested, or there's plenty to be found on the forum too.

Getting the only Tournament in the Black Market with a solid draw engine may not be game, set, and match if taken early but it's quite close.  Getting the only trasher in the kingdom early is also quite good.

Other priceless things not related to Black Market:

Your opponent Swindling your Peddler into the last Province FTW.

Your opponent Saboteuring your Colony into the last Province FTW.

Rules Questions / Re: Throne room/king's court
« on: July 17, 2011, 10:09:50 pm »
As I believe Donald has suggested, one thing that helps with this IRL is keeping everything in trees when you're playing multiple Action duplicators.  Let's say you Throne Room a Throne Room, and play a duplicator after that...

                 Peddler
               /
            TR
           /    \
TR - TR        Pawn
          \
            Smithy

So, to add to the confusion, if you King's Court a King's Court and then play a King's Court as one of the three actions, you'd get five actions to play three times, correct?  Something like

                  Peddler
                /
             KC --Laboratory
             /  \
           /      Minion
KC - KC   --  Pawn
          \
            Smithy

Indeed, unless you also played more King's Courts instead of the Pawn or the Smithy.
