Introductions / Shoutouts and an Overdue Intro
« on: January 14, 2013, 07:37:37 pm »
Hello everyone,

I have just reached a benchmark in my Dominion "endeavors" and would like to use this time to give a few shoutouts and thank you's, as well as a long overdue introduction. So here it goes!

I am warrior297. I am an active Isotropic player and have been somewhat involved in the forum community. I have had many people ask me what my name means, and truthfully there is no meaning behind the name. "warrior" just came to me when I signed up for Iso around Spring 2012, and the "297"just seemed to roll off the tongue, so warrior297 it was! Anyway, I began playing Dominion back in 2010 when I got the base set as a Christmas present. I play a lot of games with my family, and when I recieved this game, it was an instant hit. We played it 2-3 times a day for a week. After a while, the gane kind of faded away and was just played every so often. Then I recieved Prosperity for Christmas 2011. That brought the game back to life and added even more excitement to the game (we thought Counting House was a great card!). Dominion was then played weekly for all of 2012. I was introduced to Seaside in April 2012, followed by joining Isotropic around May, then purchasing Intrigue in August 2012. The rest of the expansions I recieved for Christmas last year. For almost the whole year my mom dominated the Dominion games with her clever Big Money type strategies which none of us either could figure out or counter! Slowly,  I then began winning most games due to increased practice on Isotropic, and I now win nearly every game. Anyway, it is among our top favorites with Ticket to Ride, Carcasonne, Agricola, Apples to Apples, and others.

As for my Isotropic history, well, I started in May 2012, and I was just playing casually, not thinking much about strategy or combos or that stuff for about my first 5 months of playing. Then I took a long break during Autumn, then returned early December, and at that point, I was level 14 after the break. My highest level before that was around 21. Early December I returned to Isotropic, with a goal to reach level 40. After a little over a month of playing, I have gone up 26 levels and have finally reached level 40. The past month has been such a blast and I would like to give a few shoutouts to some of the people who have been involved in my journey to level 40.

A big thank you to:

My family - My favorite playing group (we've played hundreds of fun-filled games) and the ones who introduced me to this game

Rabid - One of my favorite opponents who has also given me many helpful and appreciated tips on many occasions.

WanderingWinder - His YouTube videos have provided loads of entertainment and information

HiveMindEmulator - A very fun and cool opponent who helped me increase my level drastically.

shark_bait - One day, we played about 10 games in a row, and those were some of my most memorable sets of matches. That was the day I boosted from lvl. 34 to lvl. 38.

Qvist - Those card lists are much appreciated by me, and they have really helped me when I first started differentiating the generally "strong cards" from the generally "weak" cards. But again, it depends on the board.

-Stef-  An extremely cool and helpful guy, and probably the best Dominion player on Earth (I mean his engines are unstoppable right?) My first win against him was an achievement in itself, and every game has been enjoyable.

Tuyolqx - A new and upcoming player who has been a great opponent in many IRL games.

A thank you to everyone else who has helped me in my endeavor to level 40, as well.

I hope to become more active on the forum in the future and I think I am now at a skill level where I can possibly begin to write articles. See you all later, and now to level 50 ;)

Edit: Just a heads up I have changed my name to Warrior.

Anyone know when we can be expecting part 2?

I wanted to post it yesterday, but I'm a little bit ill since Wednesday. I try to post it today.

No rush. I hope you feel better!

I say Summer=Winter>Fall>Spring

BTW does anyone know how to get from 4 to 5 stars on the forum?

warrior297

Yes, to get 5 stars you have to play at least 3 games of forum mafia...

Or, send a Cheque in a SAE envelope to Theory, Care of New York, America.

And winters been really mild here, its January and its nearly double Celsius figures!

Are you messing with me about the 5 stars?

Could I suggest adding Tactician/Vault to the list of combos?

And thanks for adding that extra info about the slog vs. rush. It really clears things up. And a thanks to Jonts, as well!

On the rush vs slog thing, basically what jonts said. I'd say that gardens and silk road can really go either way, depending on the support they have, i.e. in either case, if you're getting hit with junking attacks, playing a slog with these is basically immediately viable.

Also keep in mind that there are many ways to play these alt VP cards - rushing them is usually best, given that a scaling alt-VP strategy is the way to go, but engines really benefit from them as well - the extra points give the engine longer to get set up - and slogs can of course benefit too, by just making them massive.
Duke is something that you can't really rush - there's just no way to get to 11-12 duchies/dukes fast enough for it to be a rush.

Thanks a bunch.

If you want a rush, you aren't looking for your alt VP to reach the point value of provinces. So if you can't get gardens or silk road up to 6 points, you probably have to be thinking either slog or support.

But if you want a general guideline, I'd say Gardens are usually rushes; dukes, fairgrounds, vineyards are usually slogs. Silk road really goes both ways.

So a rush tries to end the game with low point VP before your opponent has the chance to buy provinces. And a slog drags the game on a long time so your alt. VP are worth more points than your opponent's provinces. Am I correct?

warrior297

More or less. Though a slog doesnt have to have alt VP. Whenever provinces or colonies become nonviable you can have a slog. Really messy games like 3 player no trash/cycle sea hag games might just push you towards buying duchies and ignoring provinces.

Gotcha!

Do you know when the next big list will be out? And is there any way for me to get my list of rankings back that I did through Survey Monkey?

Hey, don't rush me.  ::)
This week I'm still in holidays and I try to publish the next parts probably Thursday and Saturday, but maybe it's earlier, maybe later, I can't promise.
Starting from next week, it'll probably ~2 parts each week.

Okay thanks.

Great article. Could you explain the difference between a rush and a slog a little more deeply as that is a concept I have not yet grasped. Also, when do you go for a slog with alt. VP and when do you go for a rush? Thanks!

warrior297

Here's an article I wrote which might be somewhat helpful here, though I don't really go into detail about when to rush vs. slog. Just a basic overview.
http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=3322.msg61589#msg61589

Thanks! I remember reading that article a while back. I was just curious when to go for a slog, or when to go for a rush, and what makes each one viable.

I still feel the Goko level should be taken into account as well.

In general I agree. But I have no idea how significant the Goko level is currently (especially regarding as you can just quit without getting a loss) and I don't know how to normalize those two levels.

Just started watching the video, and I know you're German Qvist, but, wow, you sound really German :D.

Is this a compliment or an insult?  ::) I do my very best to talk without accent, but well, it's impossible.

Do you know when the next big list will be out? And is there any way for me to get my list of rankings back that I did through Survey Monkey?

Cool! Thanks for all your work!

...I'll trade you 3 sheep for 1 ore. (One lousy ore, come on man! Please? Look how many sheep I will give you. What do you mean you don't need them? They're so useful. Aren't you going to build to the sheep port? No? Okay, how about 4 sheep. No? COME ON!!!")

Settlers of Catan? Haha lol.

« on: December 31, 2012, 06:18:55 pm »
Fireworks currently outside what means we already have 2013 here.
Time for me to do some statistics  ;D

  • I got 55 lists, 11 less than last time.
  • But, what's a little bit disappointing, the average iso level went from ~29.5 to ~24.5.
  • The submission deadline is now over. But you can still submit your Favourite Cards List if you want as I didn't evaluated them yet.
  • And if you want to submit the Best Card Lists badly, I can bend the rules a little bit and you can submit in the next couple of hours, but only if you are higher than level 30 on isotropic, just to get a higher quality level.
  • Just a note: If you didn't rate Dark Ages cards, I also didn't took your Knights and Ruins rating into account.
  • I will post the first list soon

Soon as in a couple hours or a day? Haha I'm excited!

So, hurry up and finish and submit your lists.  ;)

How many entries so far? I am trying to get my friend to enter a ranking.
