Dominion General Discussion / Re: Disappointment

To OP:

Let's see, there were just some articles written about caravan and pillage, so that statement was pretty clearly false.

both of those articles were posted after OP's post went up. before that, the last card article was posted on May 2, nearly a full month earlier. OP was correct.

Quote
WanderingWinder, ragingduckd, DG, MicQsenoch, and others are all top players who post frequently. There are others as well, and Stef has just popped up again.

they post frequently, but one could make the case that they post about Goko and rating systems more than they do about actual Dominion games and cards. OP's statement was that there is A. less discussion and that B. that discussion is not being led by the top players. both of those seem to be true.

there are less game report posts, less articles written (or updated) recently, and less detailed analysis (annotated games, 'Dominion Academy, etc) style posts. i think OP had a great point. of course, there are good reasons for all of it. the forums have expanded to include other strategy games, isotropic shutting down turned off dominion for many players, and a fair amount of the strategy space around dominion has already been discussed.

Thank you for restating what I meant in a more clear manner. Glad to see some more activity with the new previews!

There are far less new topics and articles written about Dominion on here is my point. I used to be able to check here daily and see new topics and a lot of activity. Now I check about once a week and see very few new threads. Its just the truth that the Dominion forums are much less active than they were last year or even this January. And now you don't see as many experienced (lvl. 40+ iso) members active on here, definitely less than 6 months or so ago. I am glad the Guilds previews brought more people back though!

CBguild ($5)
CVguild ($5)
HVguild ($5)
NHguild ($5)
TPguild ($5)

So what do you think which one it is?

So I'm guessing there will be one more five cost card that starts with a "V" and does something with coin tokens, hence "CV Guild". Not sure what HV means (besides the card name starting with an "V"), but NH might mean a nonterminal and TP a terminal?

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Unusual uses for remake
« on: June 01, 2013, 04:17:39 pm »
Remaking Remakes into $5 cards is also very common. Or Silvers into Conspirators or Scouts $4-villages. And random $4 cards into Duchies in the end-game.
I once played a game in which I tried the old Masquerade pin in a unique way.
The problem was, there was no handsize decreaser. My opponent completely ignored it and steadily built up to take the first 4 Provinces.
By that time I had my deck down to KC-KC-KC-KC-Masq and started chomping at his deck.
When he had nothing left I spent 5 turns buying Copper, Copper, Copper, Copper, Remake.
Once I had the Remake, my opponent resigned.

Sorry what was the remake for? For remaking KC into provinces? And wouldn't you have to pass him the coppers in your hand when you played masquerade?

Dominion General Discussion / Guilds!

I have been checking the forum off and on for the past week and I can't help but feeling disappointed. Ever since isotropic went down, it seems this site has been declining. There is much less activity than there used to be, and the discussion is no longer being led by insightful, experienced players. I miss the good old days when I could come on here and read a good article about a card or participate in an intriguing discussion. Just because Isotropic is gone doesn't mean we have to stop enjoying Dominion or stop having insightful conversations. Let's get this site back to its glory days.

Dominion General Discussion / Thread for Goodbyes
« on: March 14, 2013, 11:12:45 pm »
Good bye everyone,

We all knew this day would come, when Isotropic would be no more. I have had a great time over the past year on Iso and on this forum. I have met many nice people along the way and have improved my playing skills dramatically. Thank you to everyone who has made this experience incredible. I wish you all a great life filled with prosperity and a cornucopia of blessings.

Farewell and take care,

Why is the poll discrete? I want to see who's switching over! I'm a "probably". Probably won't play as much, but I'll probably want to enough to part with $40ish.

sorry it won't let me switch the settings of poll visibility.

« on: March 07, 2013, 06:40:57 pm »
I was curious to know how many of you will be making the switch to Goko after the beloved Isotropic goes down. I personally will probably not make the switch. I have played a few games on Goko and it just lacks the competetive and simple feel of Isotropic. Also Goko seems to lack experienced players and a good leaderboard system. Additionally, in the three games I played, I have already experienced disconnection and network issues. I won't be paying for the expansions as I already own them IRL and do not feel it is worth my money to purchase them again. Let me know whether or not you will be switching to Goko, or switching hobbies. Goodbye Isotropic, hello new hobby.

I wonder how many forum users will still be active after isotropic shuts down. Thank you dougz for the great time on iso. It would have been smarter to take isotropic and have people pay for it instead of making a totally new interface that "aint got notin' on iso."

But need to wait for an interesting game.

I'll play you a set on Iso anytime if you need to find an interesting game!

Dominion General Discussion / Analyze That Board! #1
« on: February 24, 2013, 12:19:43 pm »
Hello everyone! It's Warrior here with the long-awaited Dominion board discussion thread. Allow me to explain how this works.
Hopefully every week, I will post a kingdom of 10 cards along with some questions about the kingdom which can be used to kick up some discussion. I hope you enjoy this and I hope this thread helps people to learn board analyzation techniques and more about the strengths and weaknesses of certain cards. Let's get to the first kingdom!

This is a kingdom I recently played against dudeabides. At the beginning of the game, we both felt very unsure of what to do on this board. We both picked similar end strategies, but with different ways to get there. Here's the kingdom and a link to the kingdom on dominiondeck.com:

http://www.dominiondeck.com/games/analyze-board-1

Farmland, Goons, Grand Market, Lookout, Spy, Trader, Transmute, Tribute, University, Wishing Well

Questions:

1. What are the optimal strategy(s) for this kingdom?
2. How would you open on this board?
3. Would you purchase a potion (university, transmute)? If so, when and why?
4. Is Lookout's trashing good on this kingdom?
5. Would you incorporate Trader into your strategy?
6. What card(s) are the "power cards" on this kingdom?
7. Big money or engine?

Final Verdict:

*What strategy would you choose and how would you go about getting there?

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Interview with Donald X.
« on: February 23, 2013, 06:01:33 pm »
Not sure if this been discussed further back in the thread, but are you thinking of doing anything else for Dominion after Guilds is released? This game is enjoyed so much by my family and friends that it will be a sad day when new expansions are no longer being released. Also, how do you find Dominion plays differently when playing with 2, 3, 4, and 5+ players? Do you prefer 2 player games or multiplayer games and why? Thanks!
I would like to do a Dominion spin-off - a similar game that's different in whatever ways. It's possible I will get talked into doing another expansion someday, but I will try not to be, and it wouldn't be any time soon. The expansions, I have given this speech many times, the expansions go down in value as you do more of them; they are doing less to give you variety, they get more complex, you can only carry so much. Making expansions means not working on other projects, or expansions for those projects. OTOH it's nice to have a project you know people want.

The number of provinces per player shifts down when you go from 3 to 4, which makes games faster (in terms of number of turns), which shifts strategies. You have less ability to buy cards you want with 4-5 players; if everyone wants Fishing Villages you may find yourself opening Fishing Village / Fishing Village to get yours. Some cards change functionally with more players; Thief gains more cards, multiple Ambassador-ing opponents flood you with junk faster, etc.

I prefer 3 and then 4 and then 2 and then 5. I like the increased player interaction of 3-4 player games, and like the longer turn-wise 3-player game and reduced downtime vs. 4 players. I only play with 5 to be nice; I'm not nice enough to play with 6.

Thanks! If you invent a spin-off of Dominion, I will definitely buy it. I usually play two player on isotropic, but play 3-4 player in real life, and I can definitely tell the difference between the way strategies play out with different numbers of players.

I think he said he might do more expansions if RGG wants it because he likes to make people happy, but I don't think he has any more predesigned.

We want the expansions.

Yes. The expansions used are those which are owned by the person who creates the game.

Got it! So anyone with expansions who wants to play me on goko, just send me a message here!! ;)
