Thanks for the article -Stef-. You cover a lot of great points and this info is very helpful for an engine builder to have.

Dominion General Discussion / request: Expand Understanding
« on: December 09, 2012, 04:56:32 pm »
Hi all. I frequently play Dominion on isotropic but I also play IRL with my family/friends. They range from beginning-intermediate players. They understand all of the basics, the difference between an engine and big money, etc. I would like to be able to clearly explain to them some of the more intermediate-advanced strategies such as the importance of trashing, the understanding of when to go green, how to analyze the kingdom for possible strategies, the importance of attacks and how they change the game, and the steps to building a strong deck so they can advance to a higher playing level. If there are any articles or discussions out there on teaching more advanced foundations you could let me know of that would be very helpful, or if anyone would be willing to write an article on explaining the importance of these techniques that would be great. Thanks a bunch!

Game Reports / yet another king's court comeback
« on: October 05, 2012, 12:04:35 am »
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201210/04/game-20121004-205750-7031d483.html

above is the link to a game i recently played against Cal. As I built up my mega engine consisting of grand markets/king's courts/embassy, my opponent rushed money and green. He got some early platinums and had 3 colonies before I was even hitting above $8. Luckily, his deck stalled and gave me time to win with $50 on turn 16 and $40 on turn 17, ending the game 77 -39. Thanks for the great game, Cal!

I am surprised no one voted for base.  I almost picked it myself. Spy is one of my favorite cards as far as art goes, and Thief, Throne Room, Council Room, Remodel, Lab, and Adventurer are all pretty cool.  I guess it's just that it has a lot of dumb looking cards too.

i can see what you're saying

I agree about not seeing much in a lot of the dark ages cards. I definitely see a lot of nice pictures in hinterlands and in cornucopia. There are also some nice cards in Seaside too.

Thanks for all the input! I have so many favorite card images that I could't decide my favorite, but some among my top are hamlet and young witch. I will now be opening a poll where you can vote on the SET with the best card art. Happy dominion!

Hello all,

We all know Dominion cards contain some of the best art of any other card game, but in this thread I would like to know some of the cards with the community's favorite art. Please share your favorites and why you like that art so much (ie. nice colors, fine detail, etc.). Have fun discussing!

Dominion: Dark Ages Previews / Re: Procession/Pillage ???
« on: September 15, 2012, 09:25:30 pm »
A thank you to both Kirian and dondon for your explanations. This now makes more sense to me. You basically follow the rule "do as much as you can when you play an action card." So even though you cannot trash the pillage the second time you play it, you still do as much as you can with it. Thank you again.

Dominion: Dark Ages Previews / Procession/Pillage ???
« on: September 15, 2012, 08:47:03 pm »
So I've got a DA question that i'm sure many people have (had). What happens when you procession a Pillage? Sa after I procession/pillage, I play pillage the first time. Trashing pillage, then making others discard a card, then I gain two spoils cards. Then when I go to play it the second time, I am confused. Can you play it again even though the pillage is already in the trash? Then since the pillage is already in the trash, how can I trash it to gain a card costing 1 more than it?

Same confusion with counterfeit/spoils. I play spoils the first time, getting $3 then returning it to the supply. Then do I get to play it again since it went back to the supply? And do I trash it with counterfeit or does it go back to the supply?

If someone could explain a walkthrough of a turn doing this correctly, that'd be great. Thanks and I hope this clears up some confusion not just for me, but for others too :)

only the goko beta, and right now it only has 1/3 the set.

do you know when it will be officially launched?

Dude, you made two different threads on this same topic.  If you're that antsy to play it online, go sign up for the beta.

That was my question in the first place. Where to play the beta.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Intrigue decks
« on: August 18, 2012, 02:57:43 pm »
Yes, I came up with those.  Having played 2000 games on iso is the only thing backing those up.

Thought cornucopia was in your short list, sorry!

A soft counter to Torturer is what was intended by the Horse Traders.  With 3 or more players go ahead and bump up to a Watchtower, with 2, try a Moat.  I designed that set to have other interesting things than Torturer though.

My IRL experience would come into play more, if it weren't that my expansion is Hinterlands.

Thanks so much! I will be sure to try these out and I will tell you what I think about them!

(deliberately not thematic names, in order not to suggest how to play them)

Wildness: Steward, Pawn, Wharf, Great Hall, King's Court, Quarry, Nobles, Duke, Bazaar, Baron

Fight: Torturer, Horse Traders, Mining Village, Upgrade, Shanty Town, Conspirator, Gardens, Great Hall,  Smugglers, Expand

Thanks! I don't own cornucopia so what should I substitute for horse traders in "Fight?" Did you come up with these yourself?

Dominion General Discussion / Intrigue decks

Hi all

anyone know any good sets of ten using a fair bit of intrigue cards (because I just got intrigue) and using cards from the sets base, intrigue, seaside, and prosperity?

I love it when an opponent opens Militia when Menagerie out. You would be surprised at how many people fall into this trap.

I never thought about this...thanks for bringing this to my attention!

When I play with my mother and grandmother, their all-time favorite cards are smithy! We play with it 99% of games because they love it so much! When I play with my family they generally despise my goons engines, so the first thing they say when we decide to play dominion is "No Goons pleeeeaaassse!!" We just recently purchased intrigue and I am still looking forward to playing it.

Hunting Party of course!

lol  I've never played with hunting party in real life but I presume it would lead to some extraordinarily long turns!

Menagerie. Every time it hits, it's a little victory.

it feels so good when you look at your hand and see no duplicates and a menagerie too

Interestingly, I have found that certain powerful attacks (e.g. Ghost Ship, Ambassador) are hated, while others (e.g. Witch) are enjoyed. Cards like Treasure Map, which are generally not worth it unless you have a specific plan for them, are not good in casual games (this is probably why Ambassador is disliked).

I also find cards such as ambassador and mountebank are disliked, and sometimes king's court is disliked by new players as it seems overwhelming and overpowered.

Hi everyone! This is a topic where I want to know EVERYONE'S thoughts of what cards are the most fun, exciting, interactive cards to play with. Cards that are fun for groups, too! I personally love masquerade in groups as well as vault.
