Dominion General Discussion / Engines: In-Depth
« on: May 25, 2014, 04:56:35 pm »
A thread for some in-depth discussion regarding engine analysis. Here are some questions that I've often seen come up:

-What are the elements and factors to consider when determining the speed of a given strategy?

Knowing the answer to this question at the beginning of the game can often greatly impact the outcome. If there are two viable strategies on the board, but Player A knows which is faster when Player B doesn't, Player A has a better chance of winning, assuming he/she plays the deck cleanly. Any input on figuring out the approximate speed of one deck compared to another?

-Certain decks want to green early, whereas others like to green late. What factors determine when a given engine should green? Also, if I'm a bit behind mid-game, should I pick up that Duchy with 5, or continue building?

Another question I'm often asked but don't know how to answer besides saying "it takes some practice to get the feel for the correct timing." If anyone could explain this, it would be very helpful.

Dominion General Discussion / Board Analysis
« on: May 17, 2014, 01:05:51 pm »
How would you play this board in a 3 player game?

Harem, Cartographer, Mine, Wharf, Monument, Shanty Town, Storeroom, Village, Workshop, Crossroads.

Looks like an interesting one...could spark some good discussion.

Dominion General Discussion / Guilds!
« on: June 01, 2013, 01:18:06 pm »
I have been checking the forum off and on for the past week and I can't help but feeling disappointed. Ever since isotropic went down, it seems this site has been declining. There is much less activity than there used to be, and the discussion is no longer being led by insightful, experienced players. I miss the good old days when I could come on here and read a good article about a card or participate in an intriguing discussion. Just because Isotropic is gone doesn't mean we have to stop enjoying Dominion or stop having insightful conversations. Let's get this site back to its glory days.

P.S. Who can't wait for Guilds???

Dominion General Discussion / Thread for Goodbyes
« on: March 14, 2013, 11:12:45 pm »
Good bye everyone,

We all knew this day would come, when Isotropic would be no more. I have had a great time over the past year on Iso and on this forum. I have met many nice people along the way and have improved my playing skills dramatically. Thank you to everyone who has made this experience incredible. I wish you all a great life filled with prosperity and a cornucopia of blessings.

Farewell and take care,

Goko Dominion Online / Will You Switch to Goko?
« on: March 07, 2013, 06:40:57 pm »
I was curious to know how many of you will be making the switch to Goko after the beloved Isotropic goes down. I personally will probably not make the switch. I have played a few games on Goko and it just lacks the competetive and simple feel of Isotropic. Also Goko seems to lack experienced players and a good leaderboard system. Additionally, in the three games I played, I have already experienced disconnection and network issues. I won't be paying for the expansions as I already own them IRL and do not feel it is worth my money to purchase them again. Let me know whether or not you will be switching to Goko, or switching hobbies. Goodbye Isotropic, hello new hobby.

Dominion General Discussion / Analyze That Board! #1
« on: February 24, 2013, 12:19:43 pm »
Hello everyone! It's Warrior here with the long-awaited Dominion board discussion thread. Allow me to explain how this works.
Hopefully every week, I will post a kingdom of 10 cards along with some questions about the kingdom which can be used to kick up some discussion. I hope you enjoy this and I hope this thread helps people to learn board analyzation techniques and more about the strengths and weaknesses of certain cards. Let's get to the first kingdom!

This is a kingdom I recently played against dudeabides. At the beginning of the game, we both felt very unsure of what to do on this board. We both picked similar end strategies, but with different ways to get there. Here's the kingdom and a link to the kingdom on dominiondeck.com:

http://www.dominiondeck.com/games/analyze-board-1

Farmland, Goons, Grand Market, Lookout, Spy, Trader, Transmute, Tribute, University, Wishing Well

Questions:

1. What are the optimal strategy(s) for this kingdom?
2. How would you open on this board?
3. Would you purchase a potion (university, transmute)? If so, when and why?
4. Is Lookout's trashing good on this kingdom?
5. Would you incorporate Trader into your strategy?
6. What card(s) are the "power cards" on this kingdom?
7. Big money or engine?

Final Verdict:

*What strategy would you choose and how would you go about getting there?

Dominion General Discussion / Kingdom Discussion - APPROVED
« on: February 16, 2013, 11:50:06 am »
Hi all,
I have seen a few posts recently regarding figuring out the best strategy for a certain kingdom. It appears as if those threads were very popular. I find it introduces people to new strategies and board analyzation techniques when players share their thoughts on certain kingdoms. After reading some threads about this on F.DS and having been in the lobby on isotropic during the DS Championship games when everyone was discussing the kingdoms which were to be used, I came up with the idea to post kingdoms along with my thoughts on them to create a place for open discussion on Dominion kingdoms. If enough people are interested, I will post kingdoms weekly along with basic questions such as "how would you open in this board" etc. which can be discussed in the thread. Along with the kingdom, I will share my thoughts on the board. If it is decided I will do this, I would be happy to accept messages with sample boards and post some of the kingdoms which have been sent to me. Is this something you are interested in? If you are, then vote above otherwise I won't know if you want me to start this project!  ;)
Let me know your thoughts on this idea! Thanks.

Dominion General Discussion / Multiplayer Transition
« on: February 16, 2013, 10:57:53 am »
As we all know, dominion is generally played with two players at a time, well at least on isotropic. Because of this, I have become familiar with many strategies and how they play out in two player games. When I play with my family IRL, however, we always play with at least 3 players, if not 4. I find myself selecting strategies that are strong in two player games but not necessarily strong in multiplayer games. I am foggy on when to go for green in multiplayer, and how elaborate I should make my engines. How does one change their playing style when playing multiplayer games? When analyzing the board before picking a strategy, what characteristics must a strategy have in order to make it a viable one? I am aware the amount of turns are usually shortened and the amount of resources available for your deck are also limited when playing with more players, and to an even greater extent when playing with four people. If anyone could "enlighten" me with the understanding of how to transition from playing with two to playing with three or four, the help would be much appreciated. Many thanks.

Introductions / Shoutouts and an Overdue Intro
« on: January 14, 2013, 07:37:37 pm »
Hello everyone,

I have just reached a benchmark in my Dominion "endeavors" and would like to use this time to give a few shoutouts and thank you's, as well as a long overdue introduction. So here it goes!

I am warrior297. I am an active Isotropic player and have been somewhat involved in the forum community. I have had many people ask me what my name means, and truthfully there is no meaning behind the name. "warrior" just came to me when I signed up for Iso around Spring 2012, and the "297"just seemed to roll off the tongue, so warrior297 it was! Anyway, I began playing Dominion back in 2010 when I got the base set as a Christmas present. I play a lot of games with my family, and when I recieved this game, it was an instant hit. We played it 2-3 times a day for a week. After a while, the gane kind of faded away and was just played every so often. Then I recieved Prosperity for Christmas 2011. That brought the game back to life and added even more excitement to the game (we thought Counting House was a great card!). Dominion was then played weekly for all of 2012. I was introduced to Seaside in April 2012, followed by joining Isotropic around May, then purchasing Intrigue in August 2012. The rest of the expansions I recieved for Christmas last year. For almost the whole year my mom dominated the Dominion games with her clever Big Money type strategies which none of us either could figure out or counter! Slowly,  I then began winning most games due to increased practice on Isotropic, and I now win nearly every game. Anyway, it is among our top favorites with Ticket to Ride, Carcasonne, Agricola, Apples to Apples, and others.

As for my Isotropic history, well, I started in May 2012, and I was just playing casually, not thinking much about strategy or combos or that stuff for about my first 5 months of playing. Then I took a long break during Autumn, then returned early December, and at that point, I was level 14 after the break. My highest level before that was around 21. Early December I returned to Isotropic, with a goal to reach level 40. After a little over a month of playing, I have gone up 26 levels and have finally reached level 40. The past month has been such a blast and I would like to give a few shoutouts to some of the people who have been involved in my journey to level 40.

A big thank you to:

My family - My favorite playing group (we've played hundreds of fun-filled games) and the ones who introduced me to this game

Rabid - One of my favorite opponents who has also given me many helpful and appreciated tips on many occasions.

WanderingWinder - His YouTube videos have provided loads of entertainment and information

HiveMindEmulator - A very fun and cool opponent who helped me increase my level drastically.

shark_bait - One day, we played about 10 games in a row, and those were some of my most memorable sets of matches. That was the day I boosted from lvl. 34 to lvl. 38.

Qvist - Those card lists are much appreciated by me, and they have really helped me when I first started differentiating the generally "strong cards" from the generally "weak" cards. But again, it depends on the board.

-Stef-  An extremely cool and helpful guy, and probably the best Dominion player on Earth (I mean his engines are unstoppable right?) My first win against him was an achievement in itself, and every game has been enjoyable.

Tuyolqx - A new and upcoming player who has been a great opponent in many IRL games.

A thank you to everyone else who has helped me in my endeavor to level 40, as well.

I hope to become more active on the forum in the future and I think I am now at a skill level where I can possibly begin to write articles. See you all later, and now to level 50 ;)

Edit: Just a heads up I have changed my name to Warrior.

Dominion General Discussion / If Dominion...Didn't...Exist...
« on: December 31, 2012, 12:32:17 pm »
Ever thought about this? If this wonderful game did not exist, what would you be doing right now? How would it affect your life if the game was gone? Would you be playing something else? Give a little thought to this. I would probably be playing a bunch of other games that don't even compare to Dominion.

Dominion General Discussion / How to Play Alchemy
« on: December 27, 2012, 07:21:23 pm »
Hi all,
I finished my Dominion collection over Christmas and I haven't played Alchemy yet. We have played the new sets by themselves to get used to the cards, but I was wondering the best way to use Alchemy. Should we play it by itself, use 5 Alchemy cards and mix with X expansion (any expansion mix recommendations would be great), or just throw it in with the rest of the randomizers? Thanks! Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Dominion General Discussion / Playing with DA
« on: December 20, 2012, 08:51:04 pm »
Hi all,

For those of you who have played Dark Ages, how do you generally play with the Dark Ages cards to get the most fun out of the expansion: 1) Play games only with DA and then other games with cards from the other expansions 2) Just randomly mix up Dark Ages with all the other expansions 3) or have a set amount of Dark Ages cards in the kingdom when you play with the expansion (like potion cards)?

Thanks for your input,

Dominion General Discussion / Isotropic Ranking Questions
« on: December 18, 2012, 06:01:40 pm »
Hi all,

I have seen many players on the isotropic leaderboard who have played under 400-500 games and yet they are level 45+. At the top of the leaderboard today is a player I have never seen before and is level 51. He has only played just under 300 games! So my questions are: 1) are these players who have only played a small amount of games legitimately level 45+? And 2) is it easier to level up starting fresh, now that I am experienced (I lost many matches when I first began isotropic) or just continuing from where I am (level 30 with 1015 games)? I wasn't truly considering making a new account in order to level up faster, but I was just curious which way was more efficient for leveling up. If anyone has isotropic questions in the future, please feel free to post in this thread.

Thanks and best to all,
warrior297

Dominion Articles / Request: Winning the Curse War
« on: December 16, 2012, 12:35:56 pm »
Hi all,

We all know in Dominion how important cursers are, and how important it is to win the curse war, or split. I have played a few games recently where I picked up, say 2 Sea Hags, while my opponent only gets one, but we still split the curses 5-5. Obviously, there's more to winning the curse war than simply buying more cursers (sometimes that's the case, but not often). So, I, and probably many others, would greatly appreciate an article on winning the curse war. If anyone could help out that would be great.

Dominion General Discussion / request: Expand Understanding
« on: December 09, 2012, 04:56:32 pm »
Hi all. I frequently play Dominion on isotropic but I also play IRL with my family/friends. They range from beginning-intermediate players. They understand all of the basics, the difference between an engine and big money, etc. I would like to be able to clearly explain to them some of the more intermediate-advanced strategies such as the importance of trashing, the understanding of when to go green, how to analyze the kingdom for possible strategies, the importance of attacks and how they change the game, and the steps to building a strong deck so they can advance to a higher playing level. If there are any articles or discussions out there on teaching more advanced foundations you could let me know of that would be very helpful, or if anyone would be willing to write an article on explaining the importance of these techniques that would be great. Thanks a bunch!

Game Reports / yet another king's court comeback
« on: October 05, 2012, 12:04:35 am »
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201210/04/game-20121004-205750-7031d483.html

above is the link to a game i recently played against Cal. As I built up my mega engine consisting of grand markets/king's courts/embassy, my opponent rushed money and green. He got some early platinums and had 3 colonies before I was even hitting above $8. Luckily, his deck stalled and gave me time to win with $50 on turn 16 and $40 on turn 17, ending the game 77 -39. Thanks for the great game, Cal!

Dominion General Discussion / Best Kingdom Art

Hello all,

We all know Dominion cards contain some of the best art of any other card game, but in this thread I would like to know some of the cards with the community's favorite art. Please share your favorites and why you like that art so much (ie. nice colors, fine detail, etc.). Have fun discussing!

Dominion: Dark Ages Previews / Procession/Pillage ???
« on: September 15, 2012, 08:47:03 pm »
So I've got a DA question that i'm sure many people have (had). What happens when you procession a Pillage? Sa after I procession/pillage, I play pillage the first time. Trashing pillage, then making others discard a card, then I gain two spoils cards. Then when I go to play it the second time, I am confused. Can you play it again even though the pillage is already in the trash? Then since the pillage is already in the trash, how can I trash it to gain a card costing 1 more than it?

Same confusion with counterfeit/spoils. I play spoils the first time, getting $3 then returning it to the supply. Then do I get to play it again since it went back to the supply? And do I trash it with counterfeit or does it go back to the supply?

If someone could explain a walkthrough of a turn doing this correctly, that'd be great. Thanks and I hope this clears up some confusion not just for me, but for others too :)
