Dominion General Discussion / Re: Strictly Better
« on: June 20, 2019, 07:13:57 pm »
I was talking about Coppers, not Silvers. Trashing Copper has the (big) upside of making it easier to draw, with the downside of losing some payload. Gaining a Lab, though, is the best of both worlds: you get more draw without losing that $. That's the crucial difference.

Trashing two Estates is like gaining two Labs and taking Miserable. Trashing a Curse is like gaining a Lab and taking a token. Trashing a Lab is like gaining a Lab and then trashing two Labs.

Do you regret making this thread yet? I would!

He could delete the thread, but it would really be the same thing as just making a better thread.
I was going to say, I think this thread is strictly better than the previous thread on the phrase "strictly better".

Rules Questions / Re: Haunted Woods / Trader
« on: June 19, 2019, 12:41:22 am »
When you buy a card, this is what happens, in order:

1. You buy a card, triggering on-buy effects.
2. You gain the bought card, triggering on-gain effects.

Haunted Woods is an on-buy effect, whereas Trader triggers on-gain. By the time Trader would be usable, you've already topdecked your hand because of Haunted Woods, so you cannot react with Trader in this instance.
Technically Trader triggers on-would-gain, which happens momentarily before gaining the card (so it happens in-line with other "would gain" effects, but before any actual on-gain effects). So it's still something that should only happen after the buy does.

On my opponent's turn, he played a Village and two Attack cards. I had a Lighthouse which protected me from the first attack, but not the second. What happened?
The first attack was young witch, and lighthouse was the bane.
This is the answer I thought of, but I like the alternatives.

Rules Questions / Re: -1 Card token and Draw up to X

It was ruled that you remove the token, then you draw to X, so draw-to-X is a hard counter for having the token.

I mean, it does look like they took a lot of inspiration from what people have been doing with ROM hacks, so it does seem like they're paying attention to the community to some extent. Hopefully that extends to them showing the variety of levels that are possible.

(Also, while goals look really good, I hope that they have some flexibility so that you can have "kill 2 of the 3 Bowsers" rather than always needing to clear everything.)

Pun not intended?

I'm sorry. A little bit.

Nice! We are about to start ours and frankly it's slightly terrifying (but also exciting to finally own a place).

Just because sometimes the Boon's effect doesn't actually help you doesn't mean it isn't the right interpretation.

I would say that I don't necessarily think that the alternative *isn't* an interpretation, it's just not the one that I immediately go to.

I think I usually take it as "deceptively X" means "it appears, or is technically X, but in practice it's actually not-X". So "deceptively simple" in terms of a game means "the rules are very simple, but gameplay results in complicated decision-making". I would read "deceptively delicious" as meaning something like "it's actually delicious, but it has some property that you wouldn't expect based on its taste, e.g. its made from some weird combination of ingredients or is surprisingly nutritious".

Where are people getting the art for their cards?
In my case, usually a Google Images search for the card name (or something relevant), then use the filters to try to find paintings and similar artworks.

Star Card
Cost:
Types: Action-Reserve

+1 Card
+1 Action

Put this on your Tavern Mat.
(this is not in the supply)
------------------------------
When you gain a card other than a Star Card, you may flip a coin (coin not included).
If it comes up heads, you may gain a Star Card.
This is a Star Card. Star Cards are better than other cards.

You Win!
Cost:
Type: Event

When you buy this, you win!
(If you have more Star Cars on your Tavern Mat than anyone else still in the game.)
Otherwise, gain a Star Card.
See, Star Cards really are better than other cards!

Bonus points if you can name the game that this idea was taken from.

I'm guessing you didn't playtest this at all.

Not sure if you're just making a reference I don't get or if you don't know what thread this is.
The game which is the inspiration for the RBCI.

I would add "combo" as "A small set of cards (usually two, sometimes three) whose interaction is particularly strong, especially if the cards are individually weak but together can become a game-winning strategy." Although I know that people will argue just about every word in that definition (including "a", probably).

Aldermen
$6 - Action
You may play an Action card from your hand twice.
If you did, you may spend a Villager to play it again.

When you gain this, +3 Villagers.

Exodia is a set of cards in Yugioh with an instant-win condition if you can get them all together, just like the RBCI King Leon posted. I believe it was a critical point in some of the duels in the anime, but I've also heard that in real-life play it's usually a pretty rubbish combo because it's very fragile.

I would check to see how it plays with (or against) some of the cards that are likely to cause game-breaking effects. In particular:
  • King's Court
  • Possession
  • Prince
  • Champion
  • Teacher
  • Scout

If I play Possession, but I'm already possessed by a real spirit, do I regain control of my body for the duration of the Possession turn?

If you're actually possessed by a real spirit, then you didn't play Posession, the spirit did. So the player to the spirits' (and your) left takes a turn where the spirit makes all the decisions.
But that suggests that possession is different to Possession, where the latter has it that the possessed player is the one playing their turn. Does this need an official ruling?

I might just go and nowiki the categories in those articles so they don't show up there, and leave a note on Dblclick's Talk page so they know what's up.

Edit: Hmm, looks like the categories are hidden inside one of the templates, so it will be a little trickier to deal with. I'll still see what I can do.

Guide / Cathedral

Can’t afford to trash anything in your hand? Discard it and try a different 5.
Or trash a card, then reset yourself back to a full 5-card hand for your turn proper.

Seriously, I'll make sure to let Donald X know he's playing Dominion all wrong according to someone on the internet.
I'm pretty sure people on the internet have been telling Donald he's playing Dominion wrong for years.

Treasure Map
Fool's Gold
Port
King's Castle
Avanto
Magpie
Cultist
Transmute
Peddler
Villa
Fools gold in the black market piule would make it useless, and Avanto withut sauna, Fools gold, Avanto, Kings castle, Cultist, port, and Gladiator are all useless without another card from their pile.
