Dominion General Discussion / Pet tricks you haven't tried yet
« on: November 28, 2012, 12:12:12 am »
Because there are plenty of combos that you want to one day be able to say "I did that ... and lost 500-0" about.

I look forward to playing Workshop (or similar) + Fortress + Watchtower. Or, for that matter, any gainer + Watchtower + on-trasher.

Shouldn't you use the term "worth" instead of the plus? It's kind of confusing otherwise. +$ usually means it's an Action card.
Probably. If you had a Treasure-Duration, though, would you make it "Worth $1 - Next turn, worth $1" with appropriate pictures as well, or would you make the next-turn bit +$1?

this is, without a doubt, the most over-analytical forum ive ever been on.
Really? I frequent the xkcd forums, including the Math and Science subforums, and they'd be able to give you a comprehensive list of all the factors you need to consider when measuring the airspeed of an unladen swallow.

Played a game yesterday IRL where I went for a Bandit Camp and Hunting Grounds and such deck and after I had bought a few Bandit Camps my opponent Embargoed Spoils...how did i miss that!?!
As in, "How did I not realise that could happen"? Because Spoils isn't a supply pile, so (a) you can't Embargo it, and (b) you don't buy Spoils, so you wouldn't be cursed for gaining them even if there were some way to Embargo them.

I agree, it's a funny space to work in, hence why I was trying to find something that hasn't really been covered. I agree that Diamond shares some similarities with Merchant Ship. I suppose the main difference is in Diamond giving, on average, less $, versus Merchant Ship being a terminal Action. Finding a way to make a +$1 TD work is probably the hardest one, since there are two ADs to compare to rather than just MS for +$2. And of course, a +$3 would probably wind up being more expensive than a Province, making it a rather poor fit in most Kingdoms.

Variants and Fan Cards / Some Treasure - Duration cards
« on: November 26, 2012, 07:26:26 pm »
A quick search shows that the "Treasure - Duration" space has been explored, but not particularly deeply. So what would such a card be? Here are some thoughts:

Sapphire - $2
Treasure - Duration
Now and at the start of your next Buy phase, +$1.

This is a tricky one to price, since it's almost always worse than Fishing Village or Lighthouse but I don't think it's poor enough to be $1. Having the effect trigger in the Buy phase is a little different to the Action - Durations, but I think it ties in nicely with Treasures in general (and does odd things with Black Market). A similar card suggested in another thread was Interest, which would give +$2 the next turn.

Diamond - $5
Treasure - Duration
+$2
At the start of your next Buy phase, if this is the only Diamond in play, +$2. Otherwise, +$1.

Because Diamond's value is driven by its scarcity, of course. And it produces a slightly different kind of player interaction.

Investment - $5
Treasure - Duration
+$0
---
At the start of your Clean-up phase, if you did not buy any cards this turn, set aside your played Treasures. At the start of your next turn, discard this and place the set-aside cards into your hand.

A sort of cross between Haven and Madman, with maybe a hint of Tactician and Herbalist. Great for powering up megaturns when you don't quite get all the cards you need first time around. I'm actually a little suspicious of how powerful it is (or whether there's a bad timing interaction I haven't considered), and whether the card should be trashed rather than discarded.

Not actually in the wiki yet? :s
Since it's a category, it's likely that pages have had the category added but no page made for it.

As of this week, all sets up to Dark Ages (yay for sleeving and making dividers this weekend!), and all promos excluding Governor. I doubt we'll ever get Base Cards, but you never know.

Mini-Set Design Contest / Re: Contest Idea: Filling out "the box"
« on: November 22, 2012, 07:33:27 pm »
In an attempt to make the idea vaguely work ...

Trash a card from your hand. Every other player reveals the top 3 cards from their deck, and trashes one card with the same cost as the one your trashed, discarding the remaining cards.

I can see why DXV got rid of most of the trashing attacks, since balancing something like this is tricky. This attempts to turn it into either trashing your junk and letting everyone else do the same, Bishop-style, or trash your good card in an attempt to catch theirs. I wonder whether it needs another bonus, like a +Cards (I'm thinking possibly +2 Cards after trashing).

I like the pile of increasing value VP cards, and I think it would work best with a Colony-style rule addition that emptying the pile ends the game.

43. With just a simple makeover, your ugly Sea Hags can become a part of your luxurious Harem.
I'm pretty sure Makeover isn't an official card, unless you know something about Guilds that I don't (but it's probably about as likely to be the Roxy Music card of Guilds as Renovate).

Rules Questions / Re: Hunting Grounds, No Duchies

I think the better comparison is with Tournament, which has exactly the same wording ("gain an X or a Y") and where the FAQ specifically states you can choose a pile that is already empty.

Absolutely fantastic work there. It all looks correct to me, but I'll take another look just to see if there's anything anyone missed.

Some notes:
Some sets were really hard to work with. Base because it's got lots of short card names, Alchemy because it has so few cards in general, Dark Ages because of all the really long card names that only have weird anagrams I could never fit into this context.
Yes, I screwed up by putting the Border Village anagram in with the Dark Ages quote. That was stupid of me.
Having Jester in the Cornucopia one was really just because I had to find a way to use "joker sad fact all", it was an unintended bonus.
Fun fact: Ill-gotten gains = A glistening lot. It seems appropriate.

Aaaaaand having looked through it all, bozzball got all of them plus a few from the wrong sets that snuck in as part of a bigger phrase (I was aware of them, but decided to keep them in anyway). I declare this Grail unveiled, and offer my congratulations to everyone who picked up on the solution.

General Discussion / Re: STAR WARS
« on: November 15, 2012, 10:54:20 pm »
SO I've mathematically determined the best possible plot for Star Wars VII:

The entire thing takes place in the Galactic Senate chamber and chronicles the minutia of a trade dispute between the Ewoks and the Gungans. The only established character from the franchise is Jar Jar Binks, who has been made Chancellor.

Wouldn't he be dead by then?  Murder seems the most likely situation, but old age would require him to be dead, also.

Obviously a mysterious person hired the Kaminoans to create a clone army of Jar-Jars and keep them on ice.
Also, Jar-Jar is made of midichlorians.

2- is bc the only card that is cantrip+gain a card? I can't think of another one. There must be cases where that feature itself is valuable. Most common being times when you need things to trash: trade route, forager, alter, etc. especially important when you draw your deck and have done a lot of early trashing to get to that point.
There's Upgrade and Rats, but I think BC's the only non-trasher cantrip gainer (and if it isn't, we'll just add a few more categories onto that list until it's unique).

I don't understand what Jean is doing in this game!
Being a convenient scapegoate, mostly. Note that all of these posts were made after Jean was lynched.

It just so happened that there was a nice option made available by including Jean. Otherwise I'd have to mention someone's karma request or something.

Speaking as someone who has never seen a Star Wars movie, but has seen many parodies of it and has read all of Darths & Droids, I'll probably try Machete order at some point. Warped portrayal of first movie from D&D = sufficient? Who knows.

Well now I know what I'll be reading my spare/procrastination time.

This is the most incredible webcomic

Discovering D & D just made my day. And ruined all productivity for today.
I do so love the Comic Irregular's work. I still follow Irregular Webcomic for the "Director's commentary" and Sunday essays, I regularly read D&D (or as I describe it to those I want to read it, "the webcomic that introduced 'Jar-Jar, you're a genius' non-sarcastically") and all the mezzacotta's except for the main one, and even have a couple of SRoMG and LMoO comics up.

Your claim is crazy. You expect us to believe you're some kind of madman cop, which I think means you're one of those ... what's the word? Jester? Joker? Sad fact, all you've done is make it likely you'll be killed by scum.
Harry
Correct.

Well look who's been eating the vigilante veal today! (It's better than the PGO pork, at least.) I had you picked as the star hippie in this game, but maybe I was wrong.
Sam
Correct.

I don't understand a word you're saying. When did they start doping your drinks?
Iris
Correct.

After yesterday's results, I feel like I am alienated from the rest of the players. I assume it's not due to my risque writing style, but maybe I shouldn't have referred to Jean as a "Regal lovebird" or whatever it was. In any case, Alex can clearly reclaim his role without fear of retribution.
Harry
Partially correct. It looks like I goofed and put down one of Harry's lines in there, but the rest of the post comes from another player.

If that's the way it's going to be, then fine - your fates are sealed. I hope you recall this later when the scum wins!
Can't figure this one. Edit: Oh, it must be Dave
And correct! This would be a tricky one, since Dave tends to use much simpler language.

I think it's pretty clear you've worked out the trick, too. Anyone else figured it out?

I think I have it, and I'm just trying to work out what the counts for the other sets are. Just to check, Promo Cards have one at best?

EDIT: Actually, scratch that. By the solution I thought I had, Alchemy has 4.

I'm totally pro-Ewok. Can we talk about the Ewok movies? anyone remember those? (there were two, right?) Disney could totally make more of those. Ewoks are the best.
Never trust Ewok rope. That's the main lesson I've learned.

Just to get things started, I will present my extremely low-balled, poorly-played game:
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201211/13/game-20121113-201704-d2c8a099.html

28 turns, using Forge, Trader, Scrying Pool, University, Upgrade, Herbalist and Menagerie. The odds that *anyone* can beat that are extremely high, so go for it! If I manage to beat the score myself, I'll PM it but probably post the number of turns here, just to keep track.
