Dominion Articles / Re: Combo: Native Village-Poor House
« on: February 17, 2013, 07:31:50 pm »
Hamlet + Oasis + NV + NV + PH + PH gets very close - I'm pretty sure that most times you'll be able to discard and use NV such that you get the Province onto the NV mat, and if you accidentally NV a PH you'll have a spare coin and Buy to get it back. Plus Oasis and Hamlet are both really nice enablers of Poor House (but first you need to find a kingdom with all 4 cards in it!)

If Poor House or Throne Room isn't to your liking, swap one of them for an Ironmonger or maybe a Tribute.

My initials are CM, and long ago I wanted a fake name to use for emails and chose "Confusing Manifestation" because that's the kind of kid I was. Of course, eventually I tired of typing that whole thing out, and for whatever reason didn't want to go back to the intials, so I used the first three letters of each word and was surprised at how well that worked.

I get annoyed by the TV show, "Bones." Mainly because the main character is just as annoying as Sheldon from "The Big Bang Theory," except that she's not written as a caricature. Well, I would think that she wasn't, but then I hear this exchange:

"Burning the midnight oil?"
"Oil hasn't been used as a light source for hundreds of years."

I mean, who talks like that? I'll accept that someone new to the English language and all its idioms could make that mistake.
I read somewhere (probably TVTropes) that the Brennan character has gotten more and more stereotypically Aspie (or something) as the show goes on - in early seasons she was just withdrawn and maybe a bit nerdy, but now she has the emotional and intellectual depth of a non-Spock Vulcan.

Just because its true for one set of numbers, doesn't make it true for 0!

1337!/1336! = 1337

58008!/58007! = 58008

3720!/3719! = 3720
0!/(-1)! = ???
Hence why factorial is defined only on the natural numbers
So why is it defined for zero?

edit: I guess 0 is a natural number in some circles
Yeah, I think we've had this discussion on this board already (although I didn't chime in), but I count natural numbers as the set {0, 1, 2, ...}. So n! is defined for n = 0, 1, 2, ... only, whereas Gamma(x) is defined for all complex x except x = 0, -1, -2, ... But Gamma(n+1) = n! which is why there's a difference between where they work.

Hence why factorial is defined only on the natural numbers, and the gamma function has essential singularities at the negative naturals.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Factorial#Definition

http://www.zero-factorial.com/whatis.html

It depends on how you define 0!, and it turns out that the most consistent, most logical, and most convenient (if not most immediately intuitive) definition of 0! is 1
I define factorial as the Gamma function, translated by 1 and restricted to integers, from which 0! = 1 is an automatic consequence.

Here's how I read this:

"During your Buy phase ..."
Whose Buy phase is it? It's Bob's Buy Phase! So "you" on this card is Bob.
"this costs $2 less per action you have in play."
Since the "you" is Bob, Peddler is counting Bob's actions, and Bob's actions alone (none of Alice's Durations count). Does the cost count only for Bob? No, because then it would say "this costs ... for you".

"When you gain this ..."
Who's gaining this? Alice is gaining this! So "you" on this card is Alice.

So, if Bob has 3 actions in play then Peddler now costs $2, and so when Bob buys the Border Village and Alice gains it, she can choose to gain a Peddler as it now costs less than the Border Village.

Unsolvable power level issues are rarer and take longer to give up on. There was a card in the main set at one point that I finally gave up on in Guilds.
Hooray for Secret Histories teaser!

If you weren't a board game designer, do you think you'd still be a board game player?

I took the Australian Maths Comp several times in high school, and got awards most times IIRC (but I don't think I ever scored a medal), and did the American one once or twice and I think there's a certificate sitting in a box at my parent's place somewhere. I should look over some of the past questions to see if I can still do any of it.

As an April Fools' joke, a board that I used to frequent set up word filters for totally innocuous, common words and rendered everyone unintelligible for a day.
The xkcd forums have a "Mod Mental Health Month" where the mods are given free access to wordfilters and other such fun things. If there's a really good filter, it may not even be rolled back when the month is over.

Bizarrely, they have made 0 posts.  I don't understand why you'd make 40 spam accounts and no posts.  They didn't even have website spam links.  It's a bit like the comment spam on the main blog right now: spam with no links or advertising, wtf
Some of it is diversionary or delaying tactics - prevent you from looking closely at which ones are or aren't spamming, or wait a while before putting in the spam posts hoping that you're only scrutinising the new users. Another tactic that's coming up on a different forum is to create an account that replies to threads with either very generic comments like "Very interesting, thanks for the info" or copies text from somewhere else, aiming to get the account confirmed and the posts up, then either starts its spamming or just changes its signature to include the spam link now that it has a "legitimate" post.

First Nomad Camps (almost) adding Ambassadors and stuff, and here comes Crossroads. What will that contain? Harem? Great Halls? Silk Roads?

But I support more expansions. As long as they are fun.
Just wait until you see the Catapult ...

There may well have been. I thought it was actually a general board/card game competition of which Dominion was one game, similar to this year (speaking of which, I was at Cancon on Sunday, I don't suppose anyone else was?)

You mentioned far back in the thread that you're not exactly well-recognised in the sense that people don't usually link your face (and sometimes even your name) to your games. Have you ever considered having your face show up in your games, possibly even on the cover (Copycat-style)?

Actually, based on the map we could have a 2v2 Melbourne vs Canberra tournament. Battle of the Cities (although I think Melbourne's already lvl 2)!

Edge case challenge.  Putting stashes at the bottom to fish out with Pearl Divers.  Is there a scenario in which this would be a useful strategy?
Hmm ... Scrying Pool deck? Put Stashes on the bottom, then pull them up one by one as you need them (especially if you're at a stage where you're not sure if you can play all your +Buy cards).

You definitely wouldn't buy Feodum for points in its own right, but if you had a few in deck and bought Farmlands that would help keep your money density up for the other cheap ones (and that would increase your density better than Harem, and maybe even Nobles depending on how bloated your deck already is). I think I'd probably play it Silver/Island, getting a couple more Islands on $4-5 and Silvers on $3 (probably Harem on $6?), then switch to getting a couple of Feodums to trash to Farmlands for Harem + 3xSilver, then try to 3-pile on SR and maybe GH and Estates.

The thing is, you'd be able to counter a Duke/Duchy strategy moderately well by having a moderate heuristic for buying them - normally the comparison is Provinces vs Dukes and as the article points out once you start trying to deny your opponent Duchies while you play Provinces you're half-way to caving in and joining the Duke race, but here Duchies (and even a well-timed Duke buy) are also a useful card for a SR strategy so it's not like you're breaking your strategy that much, and you can potentially even make Duchies your third pile thus ruining the Duke player's momentum.

What about "Worth $1 for each differently named card ..."? It would probably still be $6 since it would get close to Gold-with-a-benefit, much as I can see the appeal of having a small chance of opening with it.

1222
Similarly, I'm happy to talk through a game (and also happy to set up a game that's say, 8 cards from Base and 2 from an expansion to keep it gentle), although I'm definitely not qualified to discuss any serious strategy.

1223
What can you say about translations? When will they be released? What languages are currently planned? Will the interface be translated too or only the cards itself?
(I know hsiale alredy asked this, but it isn't in the overview (maybe because he posted several questions in one post))
For starters, just German. The interface will be translated but probably not initially. I think Japanese would be the next most useful to have, but don't know what the plans are there.

Presumably for the Japanese translation you'll need to get the art from Tanto Cuore. ;)
You mean get the license to use Touhou art. Tanto Cuore is just a modified clone.

Dominion Articles / Re: Shelters
« on: January 17, 2013, 06:06:09 pm »
I think the article isn't looking too shabby at the moment. I would like to suggest opening it with a bit more explanation of the bleeding obvious, though, by explicitly describing the four main ways starting Shelters differ from starting Estates:
1. They have a cost of 1, not 2
2. They're not worth VP
3. 2 of them aren't Victory cards
4. They do stuff

Much of the article then goes on to discuss the effects these differences make alone and in combination, so it would be good to have them spelled out at the start.

But I think these are the kinds of combo this thread is about :D.
Definitely one of the things I want to see - the combos so blatantly ridiculous that even after finding the magical kingdom that supports them the only reason you get to pull them off is because your opponent is laughing so hard at them.
