Dominion General Discussion / Pet tricks you haven't tried yet
« on: November 28, 2012, 12:12:12 am »
Because there are plenty of combos that you want to one day be able to say "I did that ... and lost 500-0" about.

I look forward to playing Workshop (or similar) + Fortress + Watchtower. Or, for that matter, any gainer + Watchtower + on-trasher.

Variants and Fan Cards / Some Treasure - Duration cards
« on: November 26, 2012, 07:26:26 pm »
A quick search shows that the "Treasure - Duration" space has been explored, but not particularly deeply. So what would such a card be? Here are some thoughts:

Sapphire - $2
Treasure - Duration
Now and at the start of your next Buy phase, +$1.

This is a tricky one to price, since it's almost always worse than Fishing Village or Lighthouse but I don't think it's poor enough to be $1. Having the effect trigger in the Buy phase is a little different to the Action - Durations, but I think it ties in nicely with Treasures in general (and does odd things with Black Market). A similar card suggested in another thread was Interest, which would give +$2 the next turn.

Diamond - $5
Treasure - Duration
+$2
At the start of your next Buy phase, if this is the only Diamond in play, +$2. Otherwise, +$1.

Because Diamond's value is driven by its scarcity, of course. And it produces a slightly different kind of player interaction.

Investment - $5
Treasure - Duration
+$0
---
At the start of your Clean-up phase, if you did not buy any cards this turn, set aside your played Treasures. At the start of your next turn, discard this and place the set-aside cards into your hand.

A sort of cross between Haven and Madman, with maybe a hint of Tactician and Herbalist. Great for powering up megaturns when you don't quite get all the cards you need first time around. I'm actually a little suspicious of how powerful it is (or whether there's a bad timing interaction I haven't considered), and whether the card should be trashed rather than discarded.

Puzzles and Challenges / Who said what?

The following are posts from a heated game of mafia. For some reason, some of the posters' names have gone missing. Who wrote the anonymous posts?

Quote from: Dave
I don't think you understand the dangers in lynching me over the other moron.

Quote from: Alex
And I don't think you see why that's not an option.

Quote
Your claim is crazy. You expect us to believe you're some kind of madman cop, which I think means you're one of those ... what's the word? Jester? Joker? Sad fact, all you've done is make it likely you'll be killed by scum.

Quote from: Iris
I've tried hard to gather all the evidence together, and you're clearly scum. You've tried calling me evil, maligning my efforts in an attempt to make yourself look townier, but it's all for naught!

Quote
Well look who's been eating the vigilante veal today! (It's better than the PGO pork, at least.) I had you picked as the star hippie in this game, but maybe I was wrong.

Quote
I don't understand a word you're saying. When did they start doping your drinks?

Quote from: Sam
Frankly, I'm happier it's down to you two. If your claim is true, then the effects upstream are easy enough to deal with.

Quote from: Calvin
After a bit of analysis, here's what I've got:

Sam - probably scum.
*De-Ann - so very townie.
Iris - scum scum scum.
Jean- townie, maybe?
Alex - probable independent.
*Dave - town, I suppose.
Harry - town-ish.
Gilda - still hasn't said enough for me to say.

Extra thanks to the starred heros who I'm sure will meet their end sooner rather than later. As for the rest of you, I've got nothing to say since I don't want to print naughty stuff when I don't have to ;)

Quote from: Harry
Well, it looks like I'm not going to be around much longer, but if chance permits me to survive to the next day, I hope I won't be tarred with the same brush as Iris.

Quote
After yesterday's results, I feel like I am alienated from the rest of the players. I assume it's not due to my risque writing style, but maybe I shouldn't have referred to Jean as a "Regal lovebird" or whatever it was. In any case, Alex can clearly reclaim his role without fear of retribution.

Quote
If that's the way it's going to be, then fine - your fates are sealed. I hope you recall this later when the scum wins!

Quote from: De-Ann
The fact is, Jean lurked for the whole of D1. If this tars me with the reputation of being a lurker lyncher, then so be it. If this were my game, I wouldn't just lamely mod it any which way, I'd make sure you posted when you were supposed to!

Dominion General Discussion / Top-decking junk as insurance
« on: November 07, 2012, 09:53:18 pm »
Having had two games where this was worth considering, I'd like to know who else has done this much. Basically, when have you used a top-decking ability to deliberately put junk on your deck as protection against an Attack or other card an opponent might play? One of my favourites is in games with Secret Chamber and Scrying Pool - they're already pretty nice to start with, since you can use one to feed the other, but if you've got the Chamber in hand when your opponent plays their Pool there's nothing nicer than pulling up a couple of Victory or Treasure cards, then putting a junk card and a spare Action back on top. Almost invariably they'll see the junk card and leave it there, letting you get rid of it with a Pool of your own and moving straight onto a guaranteed Action. Alternatively, you could always put a card that they're likely to make you discard that you didn't actually want in the first place - like a Gold you don't want to draw until the end of a run of Pools.

Another case I can think of is using top-decking with Scheme, Herbalist or Watchtower to deliberately put a bad card into your hand to use against, say, Masquerade. Of course it's most helpful when you know that your opponent is almost certainly going to play the card in their turn, or if you have an alternative use for it (or a way to make it not matter that it's in your hand).

Game Reports / A board in a million (like every other one)
« on: October 04, 2012, 12:15:01 am »
Some games you get a lot of non-standard Treasures. Some games you get a lot of alt-VP cards. Some games, you get both.

Actions: Moat, Watchtower, Thief, Outpost
Treasures: Potion, Cache, Contraband, Ill-Gotten Gains, Platinum
Victory: Silk Road, Gardens, Colony, Vineyard

I think all three of us looked at this board with dread, which was justified 31 turns later (although I suspect none of us played it particularly well). So, what strategy *would* work for a game like this? There's no engine given that there isn't even a single +Action (and the only +Buy is Contra); IGG slows things down even if everyone buys a couple of Watchtowers, which suggests a Gardens game, which all the $5 Treasures kind of support - even Thief has a small role to play given the fun you can have with it (the Curses ran out slightly before the IGG did thanks to Thief).

Variants and Fan Cards / A non-synergising card: Cargo
« on: August 28, 2012, 12:09:22 am »
As I said, I had an idea for the "Card Synergy" challenge, then realised it fell more under "Wrong Synergy" because it's a bit like Treasure Map - great to have multiple copies, but not to play them.

Cargo
Action $3
+1 Card
+1 Action
Discard any number of copies of Cargo from your hand. +$2 for each card discarded.

Priced at $3 because if you open with one, you're almost certainly going to want to open with two, resulting in a chance at non-terminal Silver on the reshuffle. If you miss that, then you'll have to wait until you've bought a few until it becomes useful. Combos with Menagerie, nombos with Hunting Party.

Introductions / You trust me, right?
« on: August 06, 2012, 02:43:26 am »
So, figured I do the introduction thing before jumping into random threads (which I plan to do shortly, no worries about that).

I started playing Dominion at the Wednesday lunchtime boardgames club at work, and I loved the whole idea of deck-building so much that I bought Base+Alchemy at the local-but-not-cheap game store, introduced my girlfriend and her brother to it, and we then traveled 3 hours to pick up every other expansion (at the time) from the not-so-local-but-quite-a-bit-cheaper game store. We now have everything up to Hinterlands, all sleeved and neatly stored in some surprisingly appropriately-sized fishing tackle boxes, and eagerly await Dark Ages and Guilds.
