Dominion General Discussion / Re: Rats?
« on: January 30, 2015, 12:33:44 am »
My point was never to say that Rats is never good as a curse trasher. It was to say that it's very rarely good. You can introduce edge cases all day long. But each additional constraint you add just lowers the odds even further that it will actually happen in real life.

Remember, according to you, you need: 1. Rats, 2. Curse attack, 3. No curse trashing, 4. Light trashing, and 5. Strong engine components. Even if you count all of your additions (most of which I personally consider to be real stretches) among the possibilities, you're still looking at about a 1 in 1200 chance of all those pieces coming together. The notion that it's "just as likely as any two card combo" (which is 1 in 400) is just patently false.

I blame you for the half hour I just spent figuring out the formula required to find the probability of getting a d-sized combo in a k-sized sample from an n-sized set.  For your information, it's k!(n-d)!/(n!(k-d)!) .  Which, for a 2-card combo in a 10-card kingdom (ignoring Banes because fuck that) from a set of 206 kingdom cards is exactly 9/4223.  Which rounds to 1/400.

EDIT: Fun fact!  With the release of Adventures (30 kingdom cards), this will decrease to ~1/550 !!!  :D :D :D ALL OF OUR TIME HERE IS WORTHLESS

This is why I computer science:

Code: [Select]
import random

cards = range(206)
count = 0
trials = 1000000

for i in xrange(trials):
kingdom = random.sample(cards, 10)
if (1 in kingdom) and (2 in kingdom):
count += 1

print float(count)/float(trials)

0.002133

off by <0.1% :P

I'm not quite picking up on the context of this; would you mind clarifying, SCSN? What is it that you have been saying, and what is the fashionable nonsense?

SCSN has done a lot of simulation to figure out how rebuild works with various modifications and people keep saying things like "rebuild is bad with shelters" despite the fact that he demonstrated that this was not true.

There is one Province left.
The Peddler pile is empty.
You are behind by 3 points on your Outpost turn.
You play a Village, and now have a hand containing Cutpurse, Outpost, and Scout.
Playing Cutpurse reveals your opponent's hand of Swindler, Silver, Silver, Silver, Estate.
Saddened by your opponents purchasing power, you play your last hope, Scout, which Reveals a Peddler, 2 Golds, and a Silver.
You realize the amazing anti-Swindler effect of Scout and are pleased that it has once again proved it is the best card in Dominion and allowed you to snatch victory from the jaws of Defeat.
You put your Peddler back first, and then your treasures.
You play Outpost to limit your Clean-up Phase drawing to 3 cards, and buy an Estate.

And then you win on your Outpost turn and draw the Peddler?

No it's already an outpost turn. You play a second outpost to get the 3-card hand, but you don't get the extra turn.

Rules Questions / Re: Hands

I am offended that you are dismissing my entirely serious complaint against Dominion's terminology. Donald X. is clearly just displaying his handed privilege through his constant use of the word "hand." Why not use "the collection of cards formerly known as hand" for example?

Because the space on the card is limited?  Donald has covered this elsewhere.

Although you could commission additional art for the cards that need this phrase:

Oh god, is this Poe's law in action?

Yes, I was joking.

But I'm a little bummed the bad pun got a respect, and #28 didn't.  Oh well.

That is Poe's law in action. I couldn't tell whether you were or whether you thought I wasn't (which would also be Poe's law in action :P). I think if you'd embedded the image you would've gotten your respect. Like so:

Puzzles and Challenges / Re: What Card Am I?
« on: January 27, 2015, 12:06:06 pm »
(1) At the start of your turn, you have 2 of me and 3 coppers.  You play the first one of me.  You play the second one of me, which you knew would be a useless play, other than that it highly annoys your opponent.  You enter your buy phase with $3, 1 buy, and an irritated opponent.  What am I?

(2) I am in your hand, but I am neither a Treasure, nor Action, nor Victory, nor Curse card.  What am I?  (There's only 1 of these that i can think of, but there may be more.)

(3) I can make playing 1 copper once give you $2 instead of just $1, but I am not Coppersmith (nor am I Counterfeit, because you only play the copper once).  What am I?

(As always, I've done my best to have 1 and only 1 answer for each card, but there is almost always more valid answers that I hadn't thought of.)

1. Tournament, SP having already drawn your deck and replaced a card on your opponent's deck, Great hall with drawn deck, familiar with drawn deck and no curses, spy with drawn deck and replaced card on your opponent's deck, etc. Tournament is probably the one you were going for though

I've been here since day 2.

Obviously this thread is just about silliness though.

I took my Nan in the wheelchair

Check your script, it's throwing weird errors.
It can't throw, it doesn't have hands.

More discrimination!

I had no idea there was an unreleased expansion for Temporum too!

I made an expansion for Temporum, but whether or not it comes out will depend on how well the game does and stuff.

I checked first to make sure I wasn't spoiling anything.

That's right, everybody. Let's just throw morals out the window and play dirty. I need a shower, reading all these nasty pins is making me feel unclean.

Oh dear, let's go back to the "is there a right way to win?" debate. Pinning your opponent because it's the best strategy is not immoral

For cards that reference hands, what do you do if you have no hands?
For instance, if I trash a fortress, where would I put it?
You always have a hand, even if you have no cards in your hand or no hand to hold your hand with.

This language seems pretty discriminatory to people without hands.

I strongly disagree, his language is specifically inclusive of those without hands!

No but the very name "hand" just assumes that everyone holds their hand in their hand, which is extremely insensitive to people who cannot do that because they don't have hands.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Tournament-Province Reveal
« on: January 23, 2015, 01:55:30 pm »
I was playing a game of Dominion (as usual), and I was wondering. Is there EVER a time where you would choose to not reveal a Province when someone plays a Tournament?
The classic reason is, it's a multiplayer game, and someone else already revealed a Province, hooray. You'd just as soon not give more information to in-between players.
Goko still gives it away with the slight delay.

Basically, there should always be a button you have to click which says "either I don't have a Province or I don't wish to reveal one".
Likewise, there should always be buttons for Reactions, Stables, Spice Merchant, etc..

This sounds great until you realize how horrible it would be to actually play.

So my friend is actually busy on Saturday afternoon, so I'm not going to hang out with her and I'll be at Union station around 3. Where will people be then?

It looks like there's a few metro stations near Andrew's place.  If you can make it to any of those, I can pick you up!

Cool. Thank you. I just wasn't sure whether people would still be there that late.

I don't get it.. how do you know it's a left-handed club?

Well think about turning it so it would be facing down and the flat side forward. It would clearly have to be to your left.

IKEA is fine.  It's just a big store now.  It was a "cool kids only" thing before, but really, it's just accessible, cheap furniture.  Plus, the food court is great.

Instead, you all should join me in irrationally hating all things hipster.

Well it's been a while since I've gone, so perhaps things have changed, but I recall that you had to follow a certain path through the store and wind through all kinds of unnecessary things, and my mom and sister insisted on looking at a whole bunch of carpets and it was excruciatingly boring.
