If you don't mind me asking, which is the art for the isotropic Possession?

Google Image search FTW:

I'm really curious where all the names for the knights came from.
Did they win a contest or something? :p

Note the, uh, high degree of overlap between names of Knights and people thanked in the rule books.  :-)

Ok, ok, I'll be as gracious as I can.  :-)  It's totally not necessary — the site was a labor of love, mostly — but dougz@isotropic.org is indeed my paypal account and I stopped turning down free money years ago.

The Palo Alto address is no longer good; I moved a couple of weeks ago (remember downtime followed by a week of frequent disconnects?).  It should still forward, actually, or you can email me for my address if you prefer avoiding paypal.

Yeah, I'd download them and host them yourself if you want to keep them — the dominion.isotropic.org copies are going to go away when the rest of the site does...

Dominion Isotropic / Re: Humor me here
« on: August 02, 2012, 03:05:53 pm »
I'm not that devious.  :-)

So the basic problem is, the dominion server is hosted at my home (on a Comcast so-called "Business Class" connection) and I moved.  Got the connection set up in the new place on Friday, everything seemed fine, drove the machine over to the new place, changed the DNS to point to the new IP, all seemed well.

Then I started getting emails about connection problems at a higher-than-usual rate.  I poke around and discover lots of packet loss (a low rate constantly, plus frequent bursts of 50-60% loss).  Call Comcast.  A guy comes over Monday afternoon.  "Oh, the <something something> signal is way too low, probably a problem with the main splitter for the building."  He arranges for the maintenance team to come over Tuesday and fiddle the building's junction box.  They do that.  It seemed somewhat better, but then yesterday evening I start getting lots of packet loss again.  I called them this morning.  They're escalating, for what that's worth, they think it's a "line issue" rather than anything inside my house, I have a ticket number, but apart from that I'm just waiting to hear from them.

Dominion Isotropic / Re: Isotropic down?
« on: July 27, 2012, 11:52:26 pm »
It's back up now.  Note that the server's IP address has changed, so if you continue to see it down, you may need to clear your DNS cache (or wait two hours for the old entry to expire).

Dominion Isotropic / Re: Down Again?
« on: July 19, 2012, 02:27:17 pm »
Back on now, hopefully for good.  Sorry about the interruptions; if I have time tonight I'll try to arrange it so games that were interrupted are excluded from the nightly ranking computation.

Yeah, comcast went out completely for me a couple hours ago.  I'm waiting for someone to show up "in a 4-hour window between 10 and 2".  Grrr.

Dominion Isotropic / Re: Does Isotropic misplay Inn?
« on: June 26, 2012, 11:28:33 am »
Inn must have changed between the last playtest version I implemented and the published card.  I have:
<blockquote>+2 Cards // +2 Actions // Discard 2 cards. // === // When you gain this, look through your discard pile, and shuffle any number of Action cards from it into your deck (including this).</blockquote>
The card as published:
<blockquote>+2 Cards // +2 Actions // Discard 2 cards. // === // When you gain this, look through your discard pile (including this), reveal any number of Action cards from it, and shuffle them into your deck.</blockquote>
I'll fix it next time the server is restarted.

Dominion Isotropic / Re: Isotropic is still down

So when the power at my house came back on, the computer that runs dominion.isotropic.org didn't.  It did this the last couple times too, but I was always able to get it to come back on by trying several times -- and once it came on, it didn't have any problems.  This time, though, I couldn't get it to work at all.  I took it back to the place I bought it from and they said the motherboard has gone bad.

The good news is that it's under warranty, I got the express replacement option when I bought it, and they have the motherboard in stock, so they say it'll be replaced by the end of day tomorrow.  So you have at least about 24 hours in which you'll have to find something else to do.  :-)

Dominion Isotropic / Re: How many games to get to top rank
« on: May 17, 2012, 06:54:48 pm »
This is easy to simulate.  Starting with today's leaderboard, assuming no other games happen in the meantime and all games take place in the same day, it takes 31 games for a new player to get to #1, and 35 games to get to level 51 (by always winning a 2-player game against the top-ranked player that is not himself).

game 1: start level 0 (ranked #18056); win against Obi Wan Bonogi
game 2: start level 3 (ranked #10348); win against Obi Wan Bonogi
game 3: start level 6 (ranked #7268); win against Obi Wan Bonogi
game 4: start level 9 (ranked #5400); win against Obi Wan Bonogi
game 5: start level 12 (ranked #4125); win against Obi Wan Bonogi
game 6: start level 14 (ranked #3168); win against Obi Wan Bonogi
game 7: start level 17 (ranked #2437); win against Obi Wan Bonogi
game 8: start level 19 (ranked #1880); win against Obi Wan Bonogi
game 9: start level 21 (ranked #1434); win against Obi Wan Bonogi
game 10: start level 23 (ranked #1111); win against Obi Wan Bonogi
game 11: start level 24 (ranked #855); win against Obi Wan Bonogi
game 12: start level 26 (ranked #664); win against Obi Wan Bonogi
game 13: start level 28 (ranked #514); win against Obi Wan Bonogi
game 14: start level 29 (ranked #380); win against Obi Wan Bonogi
game 15: start level 31 (ranked #292); win against Obi Wan Bonogi
game 16: start level 32 (ranked #221); win against Obi Wan Bonogi
game 17: start level 33 (ranked #178); win against Obi Wan Bonogi
game 18: start level 35 (ranked #140); win against -Stef-
game 19: start level 36 (ranked #107); win against Obi Wan Bonogi
game 20: start level 37 (ranked #84); win against Obi Wan Bonogi
game 21: start level 38 (ranked #68); win against -Stef-
game 22: start level 39 (ranked #51); win against Obi Wan Bonogi
game 23: start level 40 (ranked #38); win against Marin
game 24: start level 41 (ranked #29); win against Obi Wan Bonogi
game 25: start level 42 (ranked #25); win against -Stef-
game 26: start level 43 (ranked #21); win against Marin
game 27: start level 44 (ranked #19); win against Obi Wan Bonogi
game 28: start level 45 (ranked #14); win against -Stef-
game 29: start level 46 (ranked #10); win against Obi Wan Bonogi
game 30: start level 47 (ranked #5); win against Marin
game 31: start level 47 (ranked #4); win against Obi Wan Bonogi
game 32: start level 48 (ranked #1); win against -Stef-
game 33: start level 49 (ranked #1); win against Marin
game 34: start level 50 (ranked #1); win against Obi Wan Bonogi
game 35: start level 50 (ranked #1); win against Obi Wan Bonogi
ranked #1, level 51

I don't know if this is the fastest way to do it.  (Like, is it ever better to win against a lower-ranked player, maybe because they have a smaller variance?)

Dominion Isotropic / Re: rankings messed up?
« on: May 10, 2012, 10:12:24 am »
Yes, unfortunately both the server and the NAS unexpectedly lost power yesterday, causing all games from 5/8 and and an unknown (though probably small) number from 5/9 to get lost.

Back online now -- my house had lost power today.  (It will also be down tomorrow, for the same reason -- that outage was scheduled; today's was an accident.)

Yeah, the machine is unreachable.  Not much I can do about it until I get home from work in a few hours.

Dominion Isotropic / Re: Bug: No Cellar in the supply
« on: April 30, 2012, 10:10:19 am »
I'm quite sure I bought 9 of these

Actually you bought 8 Cellars, your opponent bought one, and you gained one with a Governor.  What's the bug?

Edit: Oh I see, it's that it's not listed as a supply card in the first place.  That is odd; I'll look into it.

Dominion Isotropic / Re: BM/Iso Bug
« on: April 29, 2012, 04:30:00 pm »
If you specify a particular Bane card, it adds a prohibit constraint for that card so it won't be picked as one of the original 10 Kingdom cards (because if it was, then that pile couldn't be added as the 11th pile).

It would not surprise me if the Bane card could show up in the Black Market deck; I'll take a look at it.

72
How the hell did that even happen?

Yeah, so, um, embarrassing.

After theory posted that log, I was curious if there was a bug or exploit or something (it's a year old, but I didn't remember fixing anything along those lines), so I wrote to the player and asked him, and while I waited for him to reply I went reading through that section of the code.

Turns out that (until last night) the server didn't actually check to see if you had enough money to buy the card you asked to buy.  Normally it's not a problem because the interface only makes cards clickable if you can afford them, but if you hack the javascript, or insert a proxy that modifies the request on the way to the server (as bdhcompany did) it would happily sell you any card in the supply whether you had the money for it or not.  Whoops!

Anyway, bdhcompany was cool about it, that game was apparently a joke he was playing on his co-workers.  And it's fixed now, so this shouldn't be possible any longer.

No, I'm not going to do anything about past games.  If anyone was using it regularly, I guess we'll see a precipitous fall on the leaderboard soon...

The correct incantations don't work on the public server, unless you're logged in as me.  :-)

Feedback / Re: Recommended web hosting for forum.dominionstrategy.com
« on: April 25, 2012, 12:52:35 am »
If you just want a (virtual) Linux machine to set up all your own stuff on, I've been very happy with linode.com for years.  It hosted dominion.isotropic.org for the first 8 months or so that it was public.

75
Quarry, Talisman, and Hoard all autoplay and can't be undone.

This is a bug; I thought I'd gone through and checked all the treasures but obviously I missed some.  The intent is that autoplay == undoable, so it's always "safe" to press the autoplay button.  I'll probably fix it tonight.
