Mind taking a yearlong hiatus from the game until Guilds releases with a 9$ action though?  :P

Rules Questions / Procession --> Band of Misfits (as Smithy)
« on: April 19, 2013, 01:29:24 pm »
All the references I could find of Procession & Band of Misfits deals the Fortress scenario.  However, what happens when I play BoM as Smithy instead?

Argument 1:
- Since Smithy does not have an on-trash ability, Procession plays it twice, and then upgrades to a $5 action card... the way it would if it were an actual Smithy

Argument 2:
- Procession puts BoM in the trash before doing the "upgrade".  Once BoM is in the trash, it has left play, and is now a BoM (and not a Smithy)... therefore it upgrades to a $6 action card.  This is analogous to the Fortress scenario, where the BoM leaves play (back to the hand) and "forgets" that it used to cost $4.

Personally, I lean toward #2, but can't find anything definitive on the issue.

Umm... Procession requires that the Peddler "upgrades" to another action... not a Platinum.  So... no Plat for you.

You made it clear we're not doing takey-backs...

Yes, of course you can.
But you could have bought 2 of them and then topdecked a FG if you taught your Band of Misfits how to care for herbs.

Oh, I see what you're saying now.  I thought you were telling me that I couldn't afford 2 BoMs.

Yeah, I decided against Salvager/Forager, because that would have trashed OEstate, causing a +1 card, and reshuffling my deck before I gained my two new Bands.

I didn't think about Herbalist...

If I wanted to, I could have purchased 2 Grand Markets... thought hard about that, but went with the Bands instead.

Umm... Bridge is +1$ (which makes $10)

Plus it makes the BoMs only cost $4...

I can two buy of them.

Sounds good.  The only thing that wasn't clear to me was the rationale behind #3.  I mean... if I don't see the rolls, how do I know that you're actually randomly selecting your cards instead of stacking it?

Would it help to create a Google Spreadsheet to keep track of the game state?

Also... I just played an IRL game with my brother today, and there were numerous things after turn #10 that would be excruciating to do via forum.

Example #1: Moat.  If I buy a moat, you need to ask for my permission for every single attack you play... even if the Moat isn't in my hand.  Most of the blue cards are all going to be like this...

Example #2: Possession.  If I Possess you, then every village and cantrip of yours that I play requires me to wait for you to roll the dice to tell me what was drawn and update your deck's gamestate so I know how to play your cards.  That's a PbF nightmare.

Both of these things are crucial parts of Battle Royale strategy... so we can't just ban those cards (and countless others like it).  Is it really worth starting this if we're going to end up in turns that take 4 weeks to complete?  Time is money and it would seriously be cheaper to buy plane tickets than to spend that much time (=money) on one game of Dominion.

Ok pops... really sorry about all this.  I've now redone it all again with a working spreadsheet, and here's my new findings...

pops turn #4 was correct the original time
HD turn #4 was correct the original time

pops turn #5... (same as my corrected version)
[Lighthouse + Overgrown Estate + 3 Coppers]
-draw 2 remaining cards in deck (Copper and Lighthouse)
-Card #3: (die) 4 + (offset) -2 = 2 (Copper)
-Card #4: 6 - 2 = 4 (Copper)
-Card #5: 10 - 2 = 8 (Overgrown Estate)

HD turn #5... (same as my corrected version)
[Hovel + Necropolis + 3 Coppers]
Because I forgot to put Governor in my deck the original time, my count went one past the Necropolis to the Ruined Library

My suggestion would be to roll the game back to your turn #5 where you and I have the (correct) hands as listed above.

Going forward, I suggest that we make this a lot easier on ourselves:
1) Let’s not use the offset anymore... that adds more complication than it is worth.
2) After drawing cards (with the dice method we’re using), make a post afterwards showing which dice lead to which cards (in spoiler tags).  That way the other guy can quickly verify that the hand is correct... and then move his mouse off the tag and play as though he doesn’t know that info.
3) As suggested earlier, at the start of each turn we should always record the turn # and spoiler-black the cards in our hand and the cards that are top-decked, matted, etc.  (So cards-hand-info will be recorded twice... at the end of a turn when you draw the cards, and then quickly at the top of the turn...)

Thus my last turn would look like this:

H_D Turn #4
Hand: Squire, Copper, Copper, Copper, Copper
Top-deck: None

>Play Squire for +1 coin and gain Silver
>Play 4 Coppers
>Buy Governor

Discard: None
>Drew last one card from deck Hovel
>Reshuffled

**4 dice rolls here**

****new post****
2 = Copper
11 = Copper
3 = Necropolis
1 = Copper

Does that sound good?

More errors...

So I started looking at your turns now (including your offsets), and...

Turn 4: I calculated that your hand should be [Hovel + Lighthouse + 3 Coppers].  However, you played [Band of Misfits + Hovel + 3 Coppers]... giving me a Ruins and yourself a Spoils that turn.

Turn 5: I calculated your hand to be [Lighthouse + Overgrown Estate + 3 Coppers], but you played [Steward + Lighthouse + Copper + Copper + Overgrown Estate], used the Steward to trash Copper and OEstate (and drew BoM dead).

Turn 6: I calculated your hand to be [Spoils + 4 Coppers], but you played [Necropolis + 4 Coppers]

Turn 7: I calculated your hand to be [Spoils + Mint + Squire + 2 Copper], but you played [Lighthouse + Spoils + Great Hall + 2 Copper]... and for the Great Hall draw, I calculated that to be a Steward, but you claimed it was a Mint.

Did you have a baby on your lap?  ;)

Good morning...

Well, bad news.  I went back through my previous turns and noticed that in Turn 4 I drew the wrong cards (didn't count the offset properly...).  So I played Squire + 4 Coppers, but my hand should have been Hovel + 4 Coppers.  And because of using the Squire, I gained a Silver and bought a Governor both before my reshuffle... which I wouldn't have been able to do with the Hovel.  I think that puts me in a significantly better position that I should be in.

To make matters worse, I did it again in Turn 5.  I played Ruined Library + Hovel + 3 Coppers... Ruined Library drew a Silver... which allowed me to buy a Ghost Ship.  However... when I went through that turn this morning, I realized I should have drawn Necropolis in place of the Ruined Library.  That, of course, would have left me with a 3-coin buy... which can't buy a Ghost Ship.  That's pretty huge.

Then in Turn 6, I forgot to put my Governor in my deck, so I played the hand Wandering Minstrel, Squire, Copper, Silver, Trading Post... when I should have had WM, Copper, Governor, Silver, Trading Post.  When I played the Wandering Minstrel, I should have had 3 cards on top of my deck, but played it as only 2 (2 coppers, reshuffled, then drew a 3rd copper).  So that Governor just went missing.

Here in Turn 7 I was looking at my deck, only noticed 1 Governor, and remembered getting 2.  That's why I went back through all my turns (with a spreadsheet) and figured out the above errors.

Sorry for making these mistakes.  Last night I had my baby on my lap, which made it a bit tough.

Let me know how you want to handle this.  We could play on from here (I'll just put the "missing Governor" in my discard pile).  Or we could rewind back to my 4th turn where I made the first error.  Or you can call me cheater and claim a victory. :)

I do think that going forward we should (a) record the turn number at the beginning of our turn, (b) put our hand in spoiler-black at the start of each turn and (c) cards on top of deck in spoiler-black... like from Wandering Minstrel and Ghost Ship.
