Dominion General Discussion / Re: Golden Sombrero question
« on: July 09, 2017, 02:29:05 pm »
I thought I was pretty thourough with reading this forum, but I've never heard that term before.

I know it was coined by AdamH.  I still haven't a clue what it means.

At least I have a general idea what TfB means.

It was actually coined by Wandering Winder. (Before Adam's time I'm pretty sure.)

It means your turn 1 and 2 buys are the 11th and 12th cards after your first shuffle (no shenanigans e.g. Doctor).

The baseball term is its origin. Because it is fantastically bad.

I'd say no, since this is much more likely, but I guess it does suck about the same amount.

One of these definitions can just be replaced with "Cards that make Rats work". Is it a useful thing to talk about? Probably not(or only with relation to Rats), but it fits that particular definition better than TfB.

I was thinking about this the other day, turns out there is a thread on the forum from forever ago. A couple I had in mind:

1. You get down to KC KC Militia Masq, but your opponent already has more than half the VP islanded away (and can't empty any piles other than copper and curse). He can't end the game as long as you keep pinning him, and you don't want to end it because you can't win.

2. With tax, I think a scenario like the following might be reasonable:

The estates and some other pile are empty, and the only remaining VP are duchies and provinces. Scores are currently tied. There are two duchies left, and you hit 4 and 2 buys. Since you're afraid your opponent will hit 10 and 2 buys for the last 2 duchies, you tax the duchies twice. Your opponent hits 4 and 2 buys and does the same. This goes on until there's a huge pile of debt on the duchies. Eventually the same thing happens with the provinces when they get down to 2 left, and ultimately to every other pile in the game. The idea is that you never want to buy the 2nd to last of anything, because your opponent will almost certainly be able to afford the last one and a province (or duchy) before you can pay off the debt.

This feels like something that would only actually happen between two bots, but it seems like in the right situation it would arguably be the correct line of play.

#1 can't happen anymore because Masq has been modified to only pass cards among players with cards.

No it doesn't. Presumably if there was a way to fetch a raw log from a game number, it would be easy for someone to prop up the old Salvager colorizer on it.

Logs are available somehow right? What does scavenger use?

Seems this would completely circumvent the payment system? I could just load random game numbers at decision 1 until I found one with all the expansions and play endlessly for free...

There really needs to be a well-formatted log available after the game to anyone with the hyperlink, regardless of subscription.

This I can certainly agree with. Logs are sorely missed. There is that analysis site that was posted on reddit, but last time I tried using it, it did not work.

They're still a good place to start.

I don't think so. You have to unlearn a lot of stuff from those articles when you're starting to play seriously.

See, this here is a perfect example of what I'm talking about. Any article that would be actually useful to new players would be torn apart by the Awacluses of the world.

There's more than one Awaclus?!?!?

Buying Prince with 3 "gain a card" Charms is fun.

(On an Outpost turn after gaining Duchies the previous turn to close the gap.)

Yeah, I played with the zombies in a 2p game, and we were never able to shake them. There were several points where it discouraged changing time because it would free your opponent from the zombie. The zombies sadly just felt a bit boring instead of fun. This may just be a unfortunate side effect of starting in that zone, that wouldn't be an issue if we had to make the decision to voluntarily take them on to obtain a Gizmo. In any case, I think I will attempt a house rule next time I play with them to only have [# of players - 1] zombies out because that guarantees some fun passing zombies around action.

Seriously how did you end up with 9 throne rooms and 9 labs
Kind of impossible to lose at that point

The game was against a friend I'm attempting to teach. I've yet to get him to prioritize trashing first, so we have a way to go.

It was for sure "kind of impossible" to lose at that point, but I thought the win on that turn was a bit tricky. Per the responses here, not quite as tricky as I thought. My line matched yours pretty closely.

Here is one I played tonight

Find a forced win this turn.

I can't get a copy of the game to load perfectly.
You can either reload and play game #4228902 from the last decision and then play one Lab to get to the state pictured,
or load the original game #4227616 at decision 213. In either case sit in Deadlock's position of course.

My solution is in #4227616 I'm not up to speed on any way to look at the log, but you can load at the last decision I guess?

The worst thing that can happen is if you draw Chapel turn 5.

With your other opening buy, your T3 buy, your T4 buy and a Copper.

Is Beggar's money considered mine? If I run around for a while without gaining any money, does beggar keep piling up, or does he stop once he hits $4?

I assumed no, and that it can build up, but wasn't totally confident it was correct.

but what if they got that hand too?

What if we both buy the exact same cards, and our shuffles are completely identical in every way?

First player advantage becomes even more relevant?

If you get Chapel-Silver-Copper-Copper-Copper against a similarly skilled opponent, haven't you basically already lost?

Perhaps in most cases... but what if they got that hand too? There may also be worse things that could happen to them later if the board lends itself.

So am I missing something? Those solutions seem complicated.

Remake 2 Silvers into Remake.
Draw them with RB.
Remake Silver into the last Remake and Remake into Duchy.
Play Silver for a total of $16, to pay of the debt, buy RB, pay off debt and buy the last RB.

You have plenty of actions/buys to play Mountebank and buy an Estate also, but don't need to.

I'm a bit confused. Is there a difference between this and the "how high can you go" Stef posted? Wouldn't the answer be whatever the big-O of the answer found there?

No; the answer to Stef's question is a number. Here we need a function (of number of cards in starting hand). Also here's we're looking to produce lots of coins, not necessarily gain lots of cards. But I think any answer here is going to also involve gaining lots of cards.

I guess I forgot that that was gains, but they produced most of those gains by using coins to buy Travelling Fair. You'd need to work it out again to optimize coins instead of gains, but they got up in the territory of 10^600 coins out of a standard 5 card starting hand right, so that would translate pretty directly to this.

I'm mostly just saying, surely the solution that problem ended up with is also the best approach to this one?

You don't have to discard with plaza. We're you taking tokens without discarding?

Other Games / Re: Luciferous' Temporum Client
« on: February 26, 2017, 11:08:19 pm »
Hi. Yea the issue with the tokens was browser caching javascript.

FYI, you can prevent this type of issue by adding a dummy URL parameter to your Javascript files.

For example, if you have this in your main page HTML:
Code: [Select]
<script src="../scripts/dominionCards.js" type="text/javascript"></script>you can modify it to be:
Code: [Select]
<script src="../scripts/dominionCards.js?1" type="text/javascript"></script>
Then, when you update dominonCards.js, you can also update your html page and increment the number by 1.  When you do this, the browser sees the script file as a new script, and won't pull use the one it has cached. (You don't have to have the parameter already, adding it when you don't already have it will accomplish the same.)
