General Discussion / Re: Drinking

It's quite enjoyable.

For the record:

I am a Hops man when it comes to beer. The more, the better. Any Double or Triple IPA is going to be right down my alley.

I enjoy a good Red, and the occasional Brown Ale, but am only so-so on Stouts (It has to be REALLY rich). I generally do NOT like anything that is brewed with any sort of citrus, or Apricot/Cherry/etc. The fruit flavor just doesn't meld well for me.

-Edit- Some of the Irish Milk Stouts are REALLY, REALLY delicious.

I enjoy straight Whiskey, G&T, or any combination of clear liquor + citrus (preference to Lime over Lemon). My Martinis are as dry as they come, with an onion, not an olive.

And for those who don't know: You NEVER shake clear liquor. You'll bruise it and ruin it. So no James Bond in here.

Murphy's Irish Stout is excellent.  One of my favs is Boddington's.

I think you mean (Lord) Bottington, right?

(Yes, I know, insider joke)

I wish I could meet Lord Bottington... I did sign up for the Beta, but I think I'm way down on the list....

I'm a teetotaler, and can't stand the taste of alcohol.

Root beer though, all over that.

I'll drink the occasional beer, but I think that Dominion goes best with tea.

Game Reports / 370 points, 304 on VP chips

This was an old game log, but it is my favorite of all of the games I have played.  What do you get when you have Chapel, Quarry, Governor, Conspirator, City, and Goons in a Colony game?

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201203/31/game-20120331-165151-ec2f09ec.html

370 points in 13 turns.  I'm sure someone out there has done something similar, but this was off the charts in my Dominion universe.

Dominion Videos and Streams / Re: Video Etiquette?
« on: June 29, 2012, 11:50:08 pm »
The players can always respond with comments.

If watching the video is going to hurt your feelings, you could just not watch the video.  The better option is to be more rational.  The feedback is either wrong and should be discarded, or right and should be contemplated and perhaps cause some future play adjustments.

Of course, I'd still honor his wishes, even if they are crazy, just like I let people disable my point counter.

FWIW, YouTube has an excellent comments section.

I saw this earlier and wanted to post from my phone, but it didn't work.  I *love* being recorded by someone who can provide commentary about what I'm doing wrong.  Maybe it's because I have more to learn than most in the DS tourney, but I really appreciated that WW recorded our qualifying matches (made it so I could go back and look at what I was doing through the eyes of someone who has played 10+ times as much the dominion as I have).

But, that's me.  I'm not sure where I stand on recording despite the request not to record (I'd be a little gun shy), but I am definitely curious to watch how the semis went.  Were these recorded?  I understand either way :)

Game Reports / Re: My first real megaturn
« on: June 29, 2012, 07:30:13 am »
I saw this board and I couldn't help but try KC-KC-Bridge-Bridge-Bridge.  I trashed stuff with Steward and used a Tactician turn to bring it all together.

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201206/28/game-20120628-214748-16a8d303.html

As this is the first time I got the KC-Bridge megaturn to work, I piled the provinces because they hadn't been touched.  Amazingly, my opponent didn't see it coming.  Could I have connected this faster if I hadn't bought Lighthouses?

Your choice of buying lighthouses had little effect. Your choice of KCing lighthouses over bridges probably set you back ~2 turns.

On turns 12 and 13, I had this choice.  On 12, I was going to tac my hand anyway (hoping for megaturn on 13), and couldnt pick up another kc (I guess maybe more bridges, but I had lots of those), so I went w/ the duration money.  On 13, I had one kc and 4 bridges in hand with the lighthouse.  I could have gone kc-bridge, bridge or kc-lighthouse, 4 bridge... did the latter again for the duration money.

Turn 13 had no effect, but maybe turn 12 did.  At the time, I was more concerned that the lighthouse on turn 13's tac hand could have been the kc I needed to megaturn in the alternate universe where I didn't pick up two early lighthouses.

Here is the log:

http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20120627-204016-cd2f991c.html

That's a slow governor game!

No kidding.  Barring obstructions, my Governor games usually end in approx 10 - 12 turns.  I think it's because there were only two "Trash a Gold, Gain a Province" turns in the game.  I'd be interested to hear what the other (much better) players think on what breaks a Governor Gold Rush on this board (if anything).

So I have an idea for doing semis-finals after seeing how WW-IP played their match. What if the four players play until a player falls X points behind the leader. This reduces the chances of any player who has zero chance of winning the group deciding who moves on, because if you don't stand a chance you aren't playing. It would take more games to decide, but games would get shorter as we go from 4p-3p-2p.

I'm just throwing that out there.

It would match more closely to the WW-IP match scoring if the four players played a set number of games (say 6 games, as in WW v. IP), and if the winner doesn't win by more than X points (predetermined by the "fairness math"), then the players within X points of the leader continue playing (either in 2, 3 or 4 P format).  The match ends when the leader wins by more than X points, or after a longer number of matches (say 12 games), the player in the lead wins the war of attrition.

I am up for something like this, but I think the idea needs the fixed number of games (to nix eliminations based on bad/good initial draws).

Krugman (Version 2.0)

Action -- Attack
Cost: $6

+2 Buys

"You may reveal a treasure card from your hand.  If you do, gain two copies of it.  Pass one treasure to the left (or reveal a hand with no treasure and gain a Gold in hand).  Pass one Curse to the right or reveal a hand with no Curses.  The player on your right discards down to two cards and gains a curse in hand.  Any treasures passed to the left get multiplied by 1.5 (of course!).  Every other player gains a copper in hand.  During the buy phase, you may ignore the cost of Monuments, Bridges and Highways if in play."

Of course, still the best answer is don't have 3p games.  Can we come up with a system using alternates or previously qualified players filling up the brackets?

As one of the first round qualifiers, I'm happy to fill in if there are not enough alternates to fill a full set of 4p games.  Not sure how people feel about the strategic aspect of previously qualified players, but I still think my incentive is to play as well as I can.

212
Additional question: was the seat rotation that bothersome?  I.e., was it so terrible that the relative order remained fixed, such that we should try to explain and enforce:

A-B-C-D
D-C-B-A
B-A-D-C
C-D-A-B

I noticed the "fixed" seating order in our pod (may have made a difference in the last game).  I thought that the suggestion to mix up the seats was one of the better ones in the thread.

Interesting discussion.

My view is that the 3p versus 4p is a bigger difference than whether winner take all or points is adopted.

I don't have much to add to the discussion except that I think it would be fun if two of the qualifying days were points and two were winner take all.  On a practical level, everyone could participate in their favorite qualifying format before the semis.  As an added benefit, you could use the semifinals as a "test" for whether winner take all or points selects better (making sure that two wta players get matched with two points players in each pod).  Of course, the format of the semifinals would matter a lot for the outcome of the test.  To increase the power of the test, I'd be up for a longer series in the semifinals.

Oh, thanks for the clarification!  I misread what had happened (thought they only played three games because of three players).  I apologize for the confusion.

In the interest of clarifying the tiebreaker rule, what about wannabe?  I wasn't in that pod, but I read that the other two didn't want to play a fourth game (though wannabe won 2 of 3).  Not sure the tiebreak rule on this...

Thanks!  I just saw today that the national championships will be in Chicago, and I'd love to see what I can see.  I presume there will be an opportunity to be a spectator (or even play Dominion with some people who could teach me a few things)?

Hello Dominion Fans:

Just saw the "Introductions" category, so I thought I'd put mine out there. To start off, my name is Tony and I am the pirate ship economist.  I just now decided to register for an account in the Dominion Strategy Forum, but I have been playing on Isotropic since about last November and reading DominionStrategy.com posts in my Google Reader for a few months now.

About me & Dominion: I'm a PhD student in economics in Chicago.  My friend in my economics program introduced me to the game around last October, and I have been hooked ever since.  My wife (who plays under the name Bella Cullen, and at one time, Amy Farrah Fowler) and I play quite a bit on Isotropic.  I hope to learn a lot more about the game, but most of all, I'm here for fun.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Which card is best for you?
« on: June 23, 2012, 07:01:12 pm »
For me:

#1. Swindler
#2. Fishing Village
#3. Saboteur
#4. Contraband
#5. Hoard

Relative to the rest of these, I have strange cards, but I do like Swindler a lot.

As a Chicago resident and Dominion fan, will there be a chance to be a spectator at the Nationals in Chicago?
