Goko Dominion Online / Re: Funsockets Payment Model
« on: August 17, 2012, 08:09:36 pm »
I'd say about $35 AUD is what I would think of as approximately the upper limit of reasonable for the whole game including expansions. I might stretch the point a bit if it was an absolutely stellar implementation and was getting rave reviews about how much better it was than poor old isotropic (can you even imagine that alternate universe?).

But at a price of $35 AUD approximately there is no way I'd be recommending it to my various friends and acquaintances who like the occasional game but are not dedicated board / computer / card game players (like me). And that is without even getting into the micro payment stuff. There is absolutely no way I am recommending a game that includes that sort of bullshit to anyone.

What is it about this game that attracts so many programmers?

The opportunities for monetization, of course!

Funny! True.

You know, I was going to do a recap of all the bullshit, but most of it's above in this thread.

But I'm not.  It's not worth it.  Goko has suckered game companies into buying ~150 licenses for an undetermined amount of time.  Most of those licenses aren't going to ever be seen as playable games.  Dominion may not be a playable game, or at least not one with a significant player base, due to the launch failure and the monetization method.  But Iso will go down, nonetheless, due to the exclusivity agreements.

Those game companies already have their money.  RGG, Mayfair, whoever else--they already have their cash.  How much, Jay?  And for how long did you give away your exclusive license?  Two years?  More?  Perpetuity?  I hope you and Pete Fenlon have your lawyers ready; maybe you'll be able to pry those licenses back.

I don't think it's an entirely pessimistic view to think it possible that online Dominion--and other online games--are dead due to this royal fuck-up.

So.  Until Goko is running, running well, and people are using it, I now extend my (personal) boycott to any and all companies who have contracts with Goko.  I'd love to know exactly which companies they are--obviously Mayfair and RGG, and obviously not Asmadi (was there another company who said "no thanks" in that thread?  I don't remember).

I thought I'd be proven wrong about this whole thing.  I'd still be happy to be proven wrong.  But this... this is the very definition of pathetic.

Until now Keiran I had been thinking that your concerns & boycott calls etc. were a bit.... over the top. But I wake up this morning (Australian time) and it looks like all of the worst case scenarios are coming true despite assurances to the contrary. I regret that I now find myself in complete agreement with you.... looks like you (despite being slapped down by Donald X. a few times) have been the most clear sighted of any of us.

I thought this was the reason Jay went with Goko, so this kind of thing doesn't happen. Well, looks like you were wrong.

Well isn't this for the single-player campaign mode?  I don't really care about that, and if they want to monetize the crap out of that I'm all for it.

I do care a lot about this. I strongly strongly dislike it. I will not recommend a game to any of my friends that includes these micro transactions (whether in the main part of the game or elsewhere). IMO the whole thing stinks. It does make me sad because IMO dominion was one of the most inspired game designs that I've come across yet. So disappointing to see it go this way.

Well just my opinion. I'm sure I'm going to get shot down (or told that I'm an ungrateful so-and-so by Donald X.) but whatever....

I see a bunch of folks writing that the pricing is not huge issue for them but I have to say that if the reports on this thread are accurate it is a pretty big issue for me.... the prices people are talking puts it in the same sort of league as a big budget new release 3D FPS from a major studio (with all the development costs that go along with one of those).

Even if we were talking a top flight implementation I'd still think $70-80 is about double a reasonable price and it seems pretty clear we're not talking a top flight implementation....

As to encouraging new more casual gamers to the game there is no way pricing like that is going to do the trick.

And that is without even starting to think about this security type stuff....

Looks like I may have to look for my next post dominion addiction.  :(  :( :(  :(  :(

Any thoughts on fan cards being implemented in some way in the future?

I'd say there looks like there is probably plenty of replay-ability for about the next.... oh.... decade or two with what DX has designed but there are a few cute ideas out there in custom-card-designer-land. I've always thought the dragon from the fairytale expansion was nice. Also bunch of folks here on dominion strategy seem to be working on a custom expansion at the moment.

Obviously such fanciful ideas would have to wait until Goko have got the basics nailed down nicely however....

Let me cancel that question. What I have now found out about the Goko implementation has left me with such an unpleasant taste in my mouth that I'm not sure I want more reveals....

Bravo to you sir.

Putting aside what the cards do for one minute.... I have to say the art on the cards in dominion has come a long long way.... these look absolutely fantastic!

Now if only we could get a couple of the cards (that shall not be named) from the earlier sets refitting the whole game would look amazing. Oh look, that thread again.

We've got the physical version preordered (I like the social aspect of playing IRL as well as the fast competitive action on Isotropic) ...
How have you pre-ordered it? Is it an Australia-specific thing or a local store? I haven't found anyone willing to let me do the same.

No, I just mean we've already ordered it from our favourite local game shop here in Melbourne (on the other side of town about an hours drive from here) and that they will ship straight on to us as soon as they get it in stock, so no, no special Australia only deal....

I'm not saying we Aussies wouldn't be completely deserving of some sort of a special "Great-Southern-Land-Dark-Ages-Deal" ( ;)).... but no.  :)

And as to the rest of the discussion I guess I must agree. My disappointment is based on my self-built-up expectations based on previous goodness. I guess I'd say I am both happy that I get to play Dominion in some form and frustrated that I can't play it in the way it was designed with all 200+ action cards or whatever were originally designed before the game was originally pitched to Rio Grande. I understand the realities of the game publishing business mean that it can't all be release in a great lot.... that reality just doesn't completely save me from the frustration at only being able to play with a certain selection of the already designed cards.

None of this intended in any way to be critical of the esteemed designer of the game - it hardly needs saying given the amount of time we all spend here reading about and thinking about Dominion - but Kudos to you Donald - Dominion is a fantastically balanced game (the result of I can only imagine how much hard work) and the sort of sense of justice which is built into the game (i.e. where players attack cards can't just target one other player) is to be applauded in particular.

Well without further ado bring on the dark age so I stop talk talk talking and recommence playing.

If you are going with that theme, and I don't dislike it... Why not Renaissance?

Rebuild, reconstruction, renaissance.... how about "Reformation"? That way you catch the theme you want and the approximately correct historical era in a single word.

I like the look of all the work you folks have been doing - great job.

One thing - not sure if it has been mentioned already - the borders on the victory cards appears to be slightly purple - could be my eyes, or my computer - but they just don't look quite right when compared to the other cards background (a more true black).

Dominion Isotropic / Re: Iso boots players from game after it's over?
« on: August 03, 2012, 12:37:59 pm »
I usually play with a friend of mine in the secret chamber. Every now and then I go and play a few games against folks in the great hall.

When I'm playing in the secret chamber after a game finishes I can return directly to the secret chamber.

When I'm playing in the great hall and a game finishes for some reason I can't get back to the great hall and I have to exist Isotropic completely and re-login to get back to the great hall and start a new game....

We've got the physical version preordered (I like the social aspect of playing IRL as well as the fast competitive action on Isotropic) but past experience suggests that it will be a fair while before we're playing Dark Ages IRL down here in Australia.

Again not trying to have a go at anyone here.... the creator and designers of the various versions of Dominion are quite entitled to release them as they see fit.... I'm just expressing the disappointment of having wrongly got my hopes up....

Dominion Isotropic / FIXED! - problem loggin in with Firefox
« on: July 09, 2012, 12:14:23 pm »
Well the IE problem not the Firefox problem....

Not exactly sure how I fixed it either. I couldn't find "compatibility view" in the tools but I did change the settings of a bunch of things in there. Then I reinstalled IE8 for a third time and.... suddenly it is working fine!?

Well a big thank you to everyone who made suggestions! See you in the great hall.  :D

266
OK.... not completely sure how to add screen shots here....

First image shows the great hall. I can see games starting but not people waiting in the lobby. If someone proposes a game with me I can join it but I can't propose a game myself....

Second image shows a bit of what I'm talking about with the superimposing of some text over the card images and card images over each other.

Third image shows the same game screen if you scroll up for 5 - 10 seconds. The things you can buy all spaced out so you can't see them on the screen at once and the images missing from some of them.

Thanks for the suggestion. I just tried Opera and.... same problem as Chrome and Firefox.... keeps looping me back to the start screen.

The really weird thing is that I can still get into Isotropic with IE (it is just a mangled version of Isotropic). So I seem to have one problem that affects Opera, Chrome and Firefox and a different, probably unrelated problem, that is hitting IE....

I've run scans for viruses and corrupted files - nothing. I'm baffled.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Nope can't play on Firefox with or without logging in (and never have been able to on this computer). Firefox definitely has cookies enabled for isotropic. Complete mystery. Just loops me back to the start screen every time.

With regard playing with IE. I have been playing with IE without problems for the last few months. Then I reinstalled it (version 8) and the problems started.... have since tried uninstalling and reinstalling v7, no good.... gone back to v8 now but no joy. Oh well looks like it won't be too long until the Funsockets version comes out.... might just have to play IRL til then....

61 views but no suggestions...?

Still can't log-in with Firefox or play with IE.... and I'm obviously not in the beta.... so I'm on enforced leave of absence from dominion.   :(

Spent the last few days clearing cache, making sure it is not my security software that is blocking the program, making sure isotropic is an allowed site for Firefox (it is).... don't know what else to try....

Is anyone else having problems with accessing isotropic with IE...? Superimposed images etc.

Dominion Isotropic / Problem loggin in with Firefox

Hi there - for some reason I've never been able to log in to isotropic with Firefox - only with Internet Explorer.

When trying to use Firefox for isotropic I start off at the first screen with the heading "Online Dominion" where you have the option of logging in with google, yahoo or playing without logging in. Whichever option I take from this screen I get to the second screen where you have the four boxes "nickname", "lobby", "initial status" and "interface" and the "enter lobby" option. Then when I click on enter lobby I get looped back to the initial "Online Dominion" screen....

This hasn't been a big problem until now because I've just used Internet Explorer but yesterday I reinstalled IE and now when I try to play a game the interface is completely scrambled and unplayable.... text displayed over the top of other text and pictures.... all the cards available to buy are still in their normal play (half without their pictures) but to get to your hand to play it you have to scroll down for about 10 or 15 seconds....

I've tried using Chrome but same problem as with Firefox. Any suggestions?
