...this is like the only month out of the year without any real football news (except for the odd fireworks accident).

And Dez Bryant threatening (even swearing on his kids) to hold out into the regular season if he doesn't get a long-term deal, with the players union threatening to sue the Cowboys and Broncos for colluding not to pay him or Demaryus.

Nvm. I counted wrong. I was thinking Fiery War Axe didn't make the Corsairs free.

Outside of fun, is there any reason to play the brawl past one win?

Outside of fun, is there any reason to play Hearthstone?

This weeks tavern brawl is a lot more interesting.  It's basically constructed with a twist

Its a big twist I think. Cards like antonidas and Gazlow and flamewaker will go crazy. I have no doubt mage will be the strongest class in this Brawl.

I think the big winner is Haunted Creeper. It gets you 3 bananas, and gives a sticky target to use them on.

It doesn't look so. I agree with stef that opening courtyard/silver is optimal, it has best chance of hitting 5 on second shuffle and that its better than watchtower as you could put back witches drawn dead. Watchtower on mirror is weak, as both players deal 5 curses it could stop ~2 curses on average, while courtyard would allow you get more ventures/golds. I would make exception if opponent has 5/2 opening where watchtower is better.

Here opening cutpurse is worse than opening courtyard that is why you shouldn't buy it. without cy cutpurse/silver looks as best opening.

This just sounds to me like you don't like Watchtower, without a good reason. Courtyard is better at hitting 6, but not better at hitting 5, and hitting 6 is not as important here. Blocking 2 curses is a phenomenal benefit. And there is no way Cutpurse is better than Watchtower. Watchtower can even counter the Cutpurse attack...

-> open silver/courtyard. Get 2 witches asap. Buy lots of silver and gold, or venture if you hit $5. Add another courtyard later. Don't touch any of the other terminals.

I think Watchtower is better than Courtyard here. They net the same amount of cards, but smoothing turns is not as important as blocking Curses here, especially with Venture bridging the gap between Silver and Gold.

But the important point is that you only want one terminal in your opening, since you're going to be adding a couple Witches pretty quickly. So you have to look at all the options and pick the one best card. Sure Cutpurse can often be good, but it is going to quickly turn useless.

^I think that used to be possible, but is not anymore for some reason. It's kind of annoying, but you have to box select or issue the command twice to get exactly 2 Vikings to do it, afaik.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: At what point should you resign?
« on: May 21, 2015, 06:37:27 pm »
If you're sure your opponent has the win and that he is also aware of it, then the only thing you're accomplishing by not resigning is wasting everyone's time, and I don't see how it's uncool to say that wasting everyone's time is rude.

The purpose is to have fun. Trying to win is fun (regardless of the actual outcome of the game; although I can also understand the reasons why some people think winning is more fun than losing), that's why people play games. It's not fun when I can't try to win. I can't try to win when I've already won, so that's not fun, and I can't try to win when I've already lost, so that's not fun either.

This seems rather closed-minded. Maybe to you the only thing that is fun in games is trying to win, but certainly you should be able to see how other people might find other parts of games fun, no? Maybe they want to see how the deck plays out even in a losing effort, perhaps for educational purposes. Maybe they appreciate some sort of aesthetic beauty in the construction of a deck. Yes it is less fun to play with people who don't play the game for the same reason as you, but it is still rude to berate them for not seeing it the same way as you.

Where Regen Globes come from.
What the other heroes in the game can do.
How many Hit Points towers have.
What the benefit of destroying a Fort is.
What death timers depend on.
Why mercenary camps say "Defeat or bribe".
How experience gain works.
How map objectives work.
...

Also, I don't understand why the tutorial hero isn't free to play for everyone, I would have thought that this would be a huge problem for accessibility, but apparently it isn't.

Yeah I agree this information should be available somewhere obvious. Hopefully they're working on it for release. Most of it is out there on the internet, but you have to work a little to get it. The biggest thing that bugs me is the cast ranges on abilities are not listed. Like if you have the ability, you can see it visually, but say you're considering picking a castable talent like Blood for Blood. You don't know the cast range until you pick it.

That said, the actual game is great. At first I was skeptical, but I do like it much better than DotA (never played LoL). The big obvious things it's missing from DotA are individual experience and the ability to buy items. Items is actually replaced well enough by the talents. It's not like you *really* had that great of variety in the item builds for heroes anyway. Limiting it to 7 choices over the course of the game is actually just as good. Individual experience has no replacement in terms of strategic value. Most of the strategy in DotA revolves around farm acquisition and distribution. But that comes at a cost in terms of game enjoyment. Making the game about farming requires that the game be long. That's fine for high level games, but for pubs game length is a major issue. In DotA, if you get on a bad team, you may have to suffer through nearly an hour of torture, but in HotS you're done with that game in 15 minutes. So that's a worthwhile sacrifice in my book. Plus the big thing heroes has that DotA doesn't is the maps. The map objectives can replace the strategic value that's missing from the shared experience.

I just agreed to say nothing about the closed beta beyond the fact that I'm part of it.
So here I am saying absolutely nothing except that I'm part of it :)

Can you tell us anything about the closed beta?
Yes off course.

Fact 1: It's closed.
Fact 2: It's beta.

This looks like a violation of NDA.

Just played another - same deal.  Got a lucky Gold on turn 4, and bought Provinces turns 6, 8, 9, and 13, with a Duchy on turn 11.

EDIT: What I'm not sure on is whether or not getting a third Gear helps any.

I think it would since you can always set aside a gear if you draw it dead.

But if it were Silver instead, then you'd have $2 more this turn, or you could set that (or some other card) aside instead...

I think you need to use the "Share this arena" Link, that one won't connect for me.
http://arenamastery.com/nCs7

I don't play Warlock much, so take this with a grain of salt, but here's where I differ from you:
6. I think LotA is generally better than Unstable Ghoul.
8. Healer is better than Gurubashi, even more so because as Warlock your life is a real resource.
10. Deathlord is pretty bad in arena. You're better off with Blademaster
11. Darkbomb > Faerie Dragon. In general, early game removal is better than early game minions because of the tempo. You get the damage immediately.
12. Hungry Dragon is really good. There are very few things you should take over it. Probably just Piloted Shredder and OP class cards. Warlock doesn't have any of those. Shadowbolt is good, but not great.
16. You might want to think about War Golem here. You don't have any big dudes yet, and Panda is a little worse for Warlock than for other classes since the card advantage isn't as important.
21. Soulfire is still really good in arena. I think I still take it over any 1-2 drop minion. Same idea as Darkbomb.
24. Again, Soulfire.

EDIT: I was looking at 4/28 Warlock

I think it's one of those things you play around if it doesn't cost you too much to do so but it's not going to stop people from putting up multiple 2-health minions or cause them to damage their own stuff for no other reason. So it's existence helps a little, but mostly only if it's in your deck.

IMO any dragon deck should run Azure Drakes, since they're borderline good enough to run on their own. Twilight Drake is also good but competes at a heavy 4-drop spot. I'm not so sure Blackwing Tech is that horrible as a 2/4 for 3 if you miss though. Seems fine enough.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: CARD OF THE WEEK #5: Steward
« on: April 28, 2015, 10:40:08 am »
The other thing that hasn't really been mentioned here is how good Steward is in money decks. It's actually pretty good. You just trash 1-2 times instead of 4-6 times an then start using it as +2 cards. It's better than Masquerade
Is this actually true? The turns you trash with Steward you can't buy anything. Masquerade on the other hand can trash an estate and buy gold. That seems way better.

Masquerade trashing Estate and buying Gold on the first play is really rare. It's much more likely to get you $5.

I should clarify my statement though. Masquerade is a better card for BM because you do often want a $5 card. But pure Steward + money seems empirically faster than Masq + money (I haven't seen any good Steward simulations since you actually have to make choices).

Dominion General Discussion / Re: CARD OF THE WEEK #5: Steward
« on: April 27, 2015, 01:02:06 pm »
5 almost never. It's not hard to hit 5. If there is a really important 5, you probably also got a Silver, and you can buy a 5 with that. 6 can be spent on Gold for a money deck (since the alternative is just trashing Copper -- it's like taking Cache over nothing). It's also good for Altar or Forge in an engine. That trashing will easily make up for the skipped trashing of Steward. And maybe Goons to get the attack going early. Almost anything else is usually a no-go. You should be able to get those cards eventually and having them a little earlier usually isn't worth taking 2 junk cards.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: CARD OF THE WEEK #5: Steward

Which would you say is more useful/powerful: the +2 Cards, or the +$2?  And don't just say "depends on the kingdom."
It depends less on the kingdom and more on what part of the game you're in. In the early game, the +$2 can help you hit $5/$6/$7 and help you grab that Minion, Hunting Party, Hunting Grounds, King's Court, etc for an early advantage. The terminal draw is unlikely to net you much more than $2 anyway, and there is less risk involved. Once you have your engine going and you have ample extra Actions, the draw tends to become better. Obviously there are exceptions to both rules - the +2 cards option helps manage shuffles in the early game, and the +$2 virtual coin can make a big difference in the late game.

I think it's the other way around. The trashing is obviously the most useful early, then the +cards, then eventually the +$ (once you can draw enough without using the Steward). Assuming you've trashed even once, the +cards will usually do more than the +$ if you have cards left in your deck.

The other thing that hasn't really been mentioned here is how good Steward is in money decks. It's actually pretty good. You just trash 1-2 times instead of 4-6 times an then start using it as +2 cards. It's better than Masquerade. Now usually this won't be important, since if there's a reasonable engine, it will be better. But you don't have to force yourself to play a slow engine just because Steward is around. You have to make sure it's something that will actually amount to something, not just eventually a Province a turn with no attack. Steward makes *everything* faster. It favors engines because they are more powerful in general if you don't have the slow early game phase, not because it's not good for money decks.

I guess my question is what decks are beating it?

I thought one of the big selling points of Oil Rogue is to beat stuff like Mech Mage and Zoo, since you have tons of major board clear and great early removal. If Zoo is getting more popular, this should be good for Oil Rogue. I would think the only fear is that Warrior rises to beat the Zoos, and Warrior is a bad matchup.

I suppose there are constant "I'm still here" checks that are unrelated to moves, and maybe they even send taps that are not moves. But I don't think they send mouse position even on the regular client, just hover info, which is much more discrete in nature (there are 18 things you can hover over). I didn't think RNG was done on the server, but maybe it is. In the initialization, both clients should just be given a RNG seed so that all computation can be done on the local devices. Maybe they don't do that because someone could sniff packets and then abuse knowledge of the RNG mechanism?

I tried running a previously reliable Oil Rogue deck today to satisfy the Daily and boy, the meta has shifted such that traditional Oil Rogue has no chance unless the Rogue gets great draws and the opponent gets terrible draws. I reworked the deck to be some sort of Mech Rogue that has a aggro opening board and control finishing starting with Dr Boom who i recently crafted (finally) and the wins started rolling in.

What changes to the meta make Oil Rogue bad?

So a byte can represent up to 256 actions. How many possible actions can you take?
10 cards x 16 targets + (7 minions + hero) x 8 targets + hero power + 6 emotes + end turn + concede = 233. It could be represented in 1 byte. Even if they represent this inefficiently, its at most 2-4 bytes per action (some packet headers). And how many actions do you take in a game? Like 50 at most? I can't imagine a game should take much more than a kB.
Is windfury relevant for these calculations?

The 50 actions thing is totally ballpark. If you repeatedly attack with flying machines and they keep healing it off, and you say "well played" every time, sure you can get way more actions...

I don't know about the damage to non-demons thing, but I think demonlock seems pretty appealing with Mistress of Pain and Imp Gang Boos getting nice benefits from Demonfire and Demonheart and Voidcaller just being straight-up strong.
