Dominion League / Season 9 - post championship match mini tournament

1) Meet in outpost III.
2) Schedule your own match. Just host a game and put the board number in the title, or join a game suitable for you.
3) Play at most once against every opponent and at most once on every board.
-> please track yourself who you played against and on what boards.
4) The winner of the game posts the result in this thread. Include winner name, loser name and board # played.
5) After two hours of play we count up the scores: a win is +5 and a loss is -3.

We're about to start right now. Everybody is welcome, just show up in outpost II if you want to join in.

Season 9 will run from the 6th of July until 9th of August, and you can sign up until Friday 3rd of July.
If you want to join or return to division B, sign up before Sunday 21st of June.

Dominion League / Season 8 has started

The official start date for Season 8 is tomorrow but feel free to start right away.
44 signups last season means we'll play with one additional C, one D and three more E groups.
That also makes this the biggest league season yet, easily defeating season 1.
Most of the new players are in E, but some of them who were really high on the leaderboard got inserted into D, C and even two into B.
Additionally everyone who ended #2 in D last season got promoted to C.
And last but not least - the league organisation now has two additional members.

Dominion League / Birthday Party

Dear Dominion friends,

18th of May is the birthday of the Dominion League. In order to celebrate we'll throw a little party right after the championship match on Sunday.
You are all invited to join us. It's going to be a mini-tournament organized by the new & extended league organization. We will be playing two player dominion games on a mix of the top boards from the Kingdom Design Contest and the honorable mentions. The tournament will be approximately two hours long, which is far too short to select a fair winner, but plenty of time to have fun playing some great boards.

Sunday 17th of May, approximately 21:00 UTC (but it will be the 18th of May in Asia

You can sign up during the champion ship match in the twitch chat, which will start at 19:00 UTC.

2015 / discussion: seeding

So now that we know it will be single elimination we can start filling in the details.
I don't intend to have a vote about everything, but if you have an opinion please do write about it.
(Not that I don't like votes anymore, it's just that I don't think most of the decisions are interesting enough to justify a vote)

So... we're probably seeding the top-X, but not everyone. I would suggest seeding 16 players if we have something between 64 and 128 participants, maybe seeding 32 if we go above 128?

Why not seed everyone? Well basically I have no good reasons not to, I just know it's common to only seed the top-X and I don't really know why.

What to use for seeding? I would suggest using the isotropish leaderboard and don't really see any other valid options. Not everyone is in the league, you can't poll the goko leaderboard, and the isotropish one is more accurate anyway. We should probably select a date close to the starting date of the tournament on which we will copy the leaderboard and use that one for seeding? We might have a problem if the change MF is preparing breaks the Isotropish leaderboard, because of some fundamental changes to the logs. We'll cross that bridge when we get to it?

It was common to seed not only based on the leaderboard, but also on the previous episode of the tournament. I'd say the last one is sufficiently long ago now that we can ignore that.

2015 / voting: tournament structure

It's a vote with 3 options, and I ask you to choose both a first choice and a second choice.
Upon counting the votes, I will first look for the option that received the fewest number of "first choice" votes. That option will then be discarded. Everyone who selected the discarded option as first choice will have their second choice counted instead.

Dominion League / looking for another moderator

The league is growing. The signups thread is looking very nice already and still three weeks to go. At current rate we'll have 3-5 additional groups next season.
Also Adam is getting married soon and might have to sit out for one season. So... we're looking for someone to join the organizing team.

We're mostly looking for an active member of the community, or someone who is willing to become one. You don't have to be good at dominion. Some experience with tournaments is nice but not a prerequisite.

Most of the work is in moderating the groups. We're all answering questions, trying to get semi-inactive players to play their games. Some of the other tasks end up with whoever picks them up: setting up a new season, updating the standings, selecting kingdoms for the finals match. Most of it is fun, some of it feels like work.

2015 / discussion: pausing the league?

There has been some questions about pausing the league for this tournament, or just overlapping it with a specific season.

Personally I strongly favor pausing it for at least a couple of weeks. My reasons are twofold:
a) I think people will underestimate the scheduling problems that arise when playing in both. Signing up for both and then failing one or the other.
b) I would be afraid a lot of players would not want to play in that specific league season, and the format doesn't handle a lot of players leaving & returning very well.
The first 10 or so are handled without any problem but at some point the whole promotion/demotion system just breaks.

I'm posting this here instead of on the league forum because... well I don't know why. I guess it doesn't matter.

Anyway, if you have a good argument why we should run the two tournaments simultaneously, please do post it.

2015 / discussion: tournament structure

So far people have advocated "single elimination", "double elimination" and "swiss followed by knockout".

At this moment my personal preference is single elimination, ok with double, and I don't really like swiss (properties too similar to the league).
But if you have some good points in favor or against any of these structures, please post them here. Or maybe you want to suggest something else entirely - also fine.
I will try to convert them into a sensible voting options when the actual voting starts.

Suitable start dates appear to be the end of league season 8, 9 or 10.
22nd of June, 10th of August, 28th of September.

Dominion Articles / Coin Tokens

A coin token is worth slightly more then a coin, because you don't necessarily have to spend it at the end of your turn. For most of these cards you can imagine a variant that gives coins in stead of coin tokens, and you'd just have a slightly worse card. How much worse? That greatly depends on the kingdom, the game, your turn. The important thing to remember is this: most of the time you want to spend your money. You can use it to buy better cards, which in a turn or two will generate you even more money. So the most common case is that a coin token is exactly the same as a coin. If you don't spend it, it's sort of in your savings account, except you get a zero percent interest rate. Surely investing in your deck is better then that. There are off course exceptions, and that's where coin tokens get interesting:

$3 + $5 could be better then $4 + $4. Sometimes you really want a more expensive card to kick-start your deck.
$7 could be the same as $6. If there are no kingdom cards that cost $7, your coin goes to waste but your coin token doesn't.
In the endgame it can be essential to buy multiple cards in one turn

Because coin tokens are slightly better then coins, they are also slightly more expensive. This is not actually a law of the universe but Donald made sure they are. However, for most of your spending power coins is just as good as coin tokens. You want to spend it anyway! So you should try to have the bulk of your money be cheap-ass plain old coins, while only a few in the form of tokens provide you with all the flexibility you want. That is something all of these cards have in common: the first one you buy is the best. The second one is probably also ok, after that you need a good reason to go on. Off course this reason could exist, but that's card specific.

Mass Baker
This is just not a good strategy. The idea is to load up on a huge amount of coin tokens before you ever start to buy green cards, and then be totally unstoppable in the endgame. Although it is better then greening much too early, it's also far from optimal. You will lose to someone who starts the same but then mixes it up with cards that make more money. Spending $5 on something that makes $1 each turn is simply a bad ratio. Even something as simple as Gold + Laboratory (and that's really mediocre payload for a running engine) already has a much better payoff rate.
The only good reason to get more then a 2nd baker is if they're for free. Maybe University gains them for you, maybe you Remake some Fortresses. A reasonable reason to get more is if you really like the cantrips (scrying pool engine).

Mass Candlestick makers
This is very comparable to the mass baker argument. But now the cost is not in buying the card ($2 is very cheap) but in drawing it. Even in a double tactician deck this doesn't really work out. Reasons to go on after the first two could be Vineyards, Gardens, or again Scyring Pool. But if that's not what you're going for - don't let the sweetness of your first candlestick maker lure you into buying a 3rd one, even if you have just $2 to spare.

Mass Plaza
Plaza is a village and sometimes you just want those. Maybe you can cheat (draw-to-X) and then Plaza is a really good card for $4 (in those decks the coin equivalent Bazaar costs $5). If not, there is a reasonable chance mixing up plaza's with other villages is actually best.

Mass Butcher
This requires overdrawing your deck and a lot of extra actions. It's really rare that I take 3 or more butchers. It's much more common that you want to maximize the usage of the first one or two you have.

Mass Merchant Guild
Don't go beyond your second Guild unless you think you can pull off the megaturn. You don't just need to be able to buy the 3rd, 4th and 5th Merchant Guild, you also need to draw them and have the spare actions to play them. Sometimes you can and then it's very powerful.

Endgame
Near the end of the game the value of coin tokens all of a sudden can go up very quickly. Buying a single province may be losing while buying zero now and two next turn is winning. The tactical decisions involved can be very complicated, but in general it's something that is underestimated. Don't spend coin tokens near the end to get some extra components, unless you really know what you're doing. Feel free to buy extra coppers with merchant guild in play.

Dominion League / start of season 7

Welcome everybody to season 7 of the League!

Again we've had lots of signups but this time without the exodus so the league is growing. Only season 1 was bigger and at current rate we'll beat that number next season.
A number of strong players have returned or joined, so I expect the competition to be more fierce this season, especially at C level. I hope this growth will continue, but it also implies it will be more and more difficult to insert returning players to the same level they were on when they left. Be aware that you may have to play for your spot, or maybe even just rejoin at a lower level.

This will be a regular season, which means 5 weeks to play 5 matches, so please make sure not to fall behind schedule. At the end of the season we will see a championship match using the top contestants from the Kingdom Design Contest, and since I love freaky kingdoms I'm going to do my very best to be part of it.

I wish you all the best of luck and have fun. Officially the season starts tomorrow but feel free to start right away.

Each player gains or loses a VP token (You choose for each player). Then each player that doesn't have the highest number of VP tokens doubles his or her VP tokens.

(You can't lose a VP token if you don't have any)

You're playing a two player game against an opponent that plays a Fool's Gold into provinces strategy. Your plan is to just buy & play Obelisks.
But how many Obelisk plays do you need to get in to overcome the 48 point deficit?

If you want to write about a game you played during the league, or just have some questions about it you hope better players will answer, post about it in this thread.

If this thread becomes too crowded I'll split it up for different levels but due to the increased number of streams the number of game reports tends to decrease.
