Well I had nothing going on last night so I tried Dominion Online for the first time. Well the first game went well as I squeezed out a victory. Well after that I quickly learned I know nothing about how to read a board correctly as I lost 7 straight and most by quite a bit.  So I need to get some better ideas on how to become somewhat better before I get to frustrated.

I have been reading a lot on here but still don't have the greatest grasp of things. I enjoy the game and the type of person who learns by doing. Well hope I can learn to improve soon.

Welcome to the forums.  One opportunity to learn by doing is to join the dominion league.  We just started a new season, but we have a few slots still available in the low divisions.  It's an opportunity for you to play a bunch of games with some friendly players.  And when you don't want to play yourself, you can often watch other matches!  I think AdamH is planning on streaming a match in just under 8 hours.  You'd be most welcome to join!

Hi.  drsteelhammer already introduced me, but I'll do it here too.  I'm mpsprs (or Matt, if you prefer a pronounceable name).  And I'm one of the new mods.

So, we just check here on the 18th for the schedule? There's nothing I need to do in the meantime? :D
Correct.  At some point on the 18th the divisions for the new season will come out and you'll be able to see who else is in your division.  At that point you can communicate directly with the others about scheduling your match.  There will be a suggested schedule, but you don't need to follow that-we just ask that you keep approximately to at least a 1-match-a-week schedule.

Adventures/Alchemy recommended sets will show up in the next update. I was just going by what was in the rule book.

Looking at the recommended sets, I've just realized Reserve cards are terrible as Banes.

Dominion League / Re: Handling disconnects
« on: April 21, 2015, 01:02:59 pm »
I like Stef's plan as well.  I think it'll cover most situations, and I think it'll work well, and I'm inclined to think that f.ds people will negotiate fairly and won't abuse the system.

One idea I did have (stolen from duplicate bridge (and no, I don't mean what you can now do with adventures)) is the idea of a recorder form.  The idea is to create some formal system that can track this to find patterns that might be abuse of the system.  It would be private (i.e. pm's to moderators), and only actionable with multiple reports from multiple people.  This could be a situation where one party felt a bit pressured towards one result, or maybe somebody consistently disconnects and potentially gains a slight advantage in the league, or perhaps if a third party (perhaps in the same bracket) feels some incorrect agreement that affects demotion in the group.  Things that are as one-off things stuff that will simply happen, and aren't a problem, but that could, if done repeatedly, give someone an advantage that is not seen for the pattern it is because no one person gets taken advantage of more than once.  These "recorder forms" would just sit and only be needed if somebody accumulates a lot.  Which is hopefully never.

An implementation could be to simply have a dummy account setup where people after dealing with a disconnect could send a pm with a short summary, and which other people could also add to.  Maybe it's not necessary.  I certainly haven't ever had a disconnect that I felt was handled unfairly, but it could happen.

Also, it might be an interesting thing to discuss (in the chat perhaps of streams such as AdamH's) what class of disconnect a game would be at various points.  I'm not advocating always doing that, but having some better players occasionally talk about it might help lesser players such as myself have a better sense.

First of all, let me say that I agree with having a discussion.

I think the most important thing is having a solid policy, and said policy ultimately (and perhaps unfortunately) will rest on the moderators making a decision if the involved players disagree on the state of the game.

To try to avoid that as much as possible, I like having only a few categories.  I don't consider myself particularly capable of distinguishing between say a 20% and a 40% win chance (and I suspect those who have watched me on stream lately have a similar opinion of my abilities).  And yes, what Stef says is true-the difference is unlikely to matter-but I'd still rather not have to make fine distinctions.

I also think the policy should explicitly say that while of course we are all trying to win, and we are quite competitive, the goal is to have fun, and so we should keep that perspective.

My match vs. nate_w (with write-ups, since I suspect I won't get any feedback from just posting the video).

But here's the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MLX0rOUk60o

Game 1: http://www.gokosalvager.com/static/logprettifier.html?20150408/log.5101a312e4b0a35e483e0772.1428538725554.txt

Code: [Select]
Moat, Scheme, Swindler, Warehouse, Workshop, Familiar, Philosopher's Stone, Mining Village, Band of Misfits, Hunting Grounds
I started 5/2 and I wasn't sure what to do.  Do I go potion/moat and contest familiars?  Do I go BoM/Moat, and ignore familiar (hoping to swindle enough coppers to curse to avoid being swamped).  I chose what is probably the worst.  BoM/Moat into a late potion.  That did not work.  My swindler hit copper early, and I lost the curse split 7-3.  Solid victory for nate_w.  In hindsight, I think I should have just gone swindler/BoM as much as possible.  Get money later.  On 4/3 I'd have definitely gone potion/swindler.

Game 2:  http://www.gokosalvager.com/static/logprettifier.html?20150408/log.5101a312e4b0a35e483e0772.1428539226352.txt

Code: [Select]
Haven, Scrying Pool, Island, Smithy, Bazaar, Catacombs, Mint, Mountebank, Soothsayer, Goons
Again I start 5/2.  I'm happier about it here.  I open Mountebank.  I win the curse split 7-3.  I make some small misplays (I'd have been in trouble in the end if nate_w had spiked a colony), but mostly I was never in real trouble after the big lead I had in the opening.  Solid win for me.

Game 3:  http://www.gokosalvager.com/static/logprettifier.html?20150408/log.5101a312e4b0a35e483e0772.1428539633100.txt

Code: [Select]
Cellar, Vagrant, University, Armory, Caravan, Scavenger, Golem, Duke, Haggler, Goons
I opened potion/silver with the intent of playing an engine here.  I spiked an early 6, and got goons-I think maybe that should have been caravan.  But things are coming together nicely for me against nate's caravan plus a few terminals deck.  Nate sees the writing on the wall and resigns early.  This one was definitely a strategy win for me, as I was far ahead even with some not great potion luck (1P even once).  Tactically, it was more "eh" for me.  That Goons buy is iffy, and I hesitated getting a haggler (even with plenty of 2 cost cards to grab).

Game 4:  http://www.gokosalvager.com/static/logprettifier.html?20150408/log.5101a312e4b0a35e483e0772.1428540416839.txt

Code: [Select]
Fool's Gold, Vagrant, Trade Route, Wishing Well, Marauder, Bandit Camp, Junk Dealer, Mystic, Rebuild, Border Village
We both played rebuild.  I hit 2 more than I would have liked, but the biggest thing here is nate accidentally "rebuilding" an estate to an estate, which let me split duchies 4-4.  Finally in the end game we had just one province left, each with a duchy, no estates left, and I had a 2 point lead.  So it was simply a question of could nate get lucky and rebuild duchy->province (avoiding province->province or estate->nothing, whichever is possible given what he names), or would I be able to burn that province (naming estate to go province->province).  After a few rebuildless turns from us both, he drew his duchy with a rebuild.  No good.  I drew nothing again.  He drew rebuild, but with the duchy already past, he was lost (and I had a rebuild finally).  This game probably should have been nate's, but I snuck out the win (so 3-1 for me, if you are counting).

Game 5:  http://www.gokosalvager.com/static/logprettifier.html?20150408/log.5101a312e4b0a35e483e0772.1428541663102.txt

Code: [Select]
Courtyard, Embargo, Coppersmith, Cutpurse, Ironmonger, Island, Nomad Camp, Wandering Minstrel, Catacombs, City
Well.  I didn't play this one too well.  We both went for engine.  That's good.  I got ironmongers.  I'd have rather had wandering minstrels.  We both got cities (and left the pile at 2).  Wandering Minstrels are simply better.  Unfortunately, I only figured all this out mid-game.  Nate seemed to figure that out ahead of me (but again, mid-game).  I had more nomad camps, and got a coppersmith sooner.  I had more catacombs, he had more courtyards.  Overall pretty close.  We danced around for a bit with two provinces left, both with the theoretical capability of double provincing, but I hit it first, so I won.  Lots of mistakes for both of us here I think, could have gone either way, but another mpsprs victory.

Game 6:  http://www.gokosalvager.com/static/logprettifier.html?20150408/log.5101a312e4b0a35e483e0772.1428542469553.txt

Code: [Select]
Transmute, Secret Chamber, Hermit, Bishop, Monument, Salvager, Worker's Village, Cartographer, Market, Harem
I completely missed that colonies were part of this game, so I was baffled by nate running through hermits->madmen so fast.  I thought there was nothing useful to do with big hands before getting buy, until he bought platinum.  Oops.  Never the less, I had more components-more gold, not too far behind on platina, a few cartographers to grease the wheels, and a couple monuments.  Ended up winning by 7 with 9 points in monument chips.

Overall, I felt I played sort of "meh".  A lot of things that I realized afterwards were clear tactical misplays, but the results went my way.  Thanks to liopoil and stef for the advice in the twitch chat they left me to read after the games.  I really appreciate it.  Good luck to nate_w with the rest of your matches (and welcome to the league as well!).

Cheers

Hi all,

I plan to get back to streaming my games this season in C1.

First match: Wednesday April 8th 8pm Eastern US time (so let's say 12:01 am Thursday the 9th UTC).

Second match: Thursday April 9th afternoon-ish sometime Eastern US (so afternoon/evening UTC)-with actual time TBD.

All my matches will be at http://www.twitch.tv/mpsprs

Good luck to all (except my C1 opponents, to whom I wish moderately good, but not quite good enough luck).

For the original problem, it would be easy to just simulate the scenario a bunch of times to approximate the answer?  The formula shouldn't be that difficult either, but takes at least some thought.

I assume I didn't play this board all that well: www.gokosalvager.com/static/logprettifier.html?20141020/log.5101a312e4b0a35e483e0772.1413848582812.txt.

But, I did find myself with a ruined market (via cultist battle), that I kept after trashing (with chapel).  Played it every turn but one from turn 13 on (though I didn't use the buy on one turn), ended the game on piles on turn 19.  Based on the way we played the game (mostly mirror cultists into heralds), the fact that I kept ruined market probably won me the game.

Not great evidence, since I'm not convinced we should have bought out all the heralds, and then the pile control is a bit less of an issue.  But it does include a log!

In an arena match, while nearing death, my opponent played a secret.  So I played zombie chow into mirror entity, killed his new zombie chow, and got the health I needed (with some opponent misplays I think-not that I'm good enough to really tell).  Managed to win.  It was half my wins in my 2-3 arena!
