Familiar is hands down the best card with a potion in its cost, so if people aren't buying it it's just because your group doesn't realize how powerful cursing attacks are.  (Or you play a lot of 4+ player.)

52
Why?

This is the question I'd still like answered. A lot of the point of Ruins is that they're more interesting than Curses. Mostly that's because there are 5 different Ruins. Why change that?

The only thing I can think of is that the OP doesn't like the luck factor of the Ruins.  Is there anything else?

Man, if I had to remove cards from these 3 sets, it would be Witch, Mountebank and Goons...
But never Saboteur or Trade route !

100% agree on Goons. I have not played a single game with Goons that has been fun, even when I'm the one racking in huge amounts of points. I don't understand why Trade Route is bad/not fun. It's a trasher, gives +buy and near the end of the game can make amazing money for it's price.

I've never had that kind of bad game with Goons; I think it's pretty fun.

My choices for removal would be Governor and Ill-Gotten Gains, because of the brain-dead strategies that result from them.  Even if I win with IGG it feels dirty.  In 4+ player games I don't want to see Pirate Ship either; too often those games just turn into a luck race to who can get to 3-4 coins on their mat before all the money in everyone's decks is gone.

Goko Dominion Online / Re: Goko regrets

The seemingly oxymoronic concept of monopolistic competition actually exists. If Harry Potter books became too expensive, people would switch to reading Artemis Fowl. If the Goko implementation left something to be desired, people would switch to Isotropic Innovation.

That's obviously not true in practice, though.  The Goko implementation leaves a lot to be desired (for me), and I haven't stopped playing it or started playing some other free game.

And for HP, I started reading it when 4 books were out and I would have paid more than I did pay for the remaining books without question.  (Obviously there's a limit, I wouldn't have paid $75 for each book, but I certainly would have paid $35 instead of the $29.99 or whatever I did pay.)

A product like a game introduces a factor that makes the concept of monopoly a little fuzzier than with other products.  Prestige Brands is the only company that can make and market Comet (cleanser), but that's not a "monopoly" since you can buy other cleansers from different companies.

With a game it's a little different; Square-Enix is the only company that can make Final Fantasy games -- of course there are other games out there, but a Final Fantasy game can't just be swapped for another game in the same way that Comet can be swapped for another cleanser.  It's the same thing with Dominion; saying that you can play Innovation or Ticket to Ride instead is different from saying that you can buy 409 or generic cleanser instead of Comet.

I'm certainly not saying that the antitrust laws should be revised for games, but the issues are a little different than most products.  Personally, if I thought that a game is a game is a game, I would delete the Goko bookmark from my browser and never give it a second thought, but I like Dominion enough that I'm willing to put up with their (nearly) adequate implementation to be able to play it online.

Goko Dominion Online / Re: Goko Redlines
« on: April 16, 2013, 11:08:32 am »
For me the redline is automatch.  That's the only thing that's holding me back right now from buying the complete set of cards.

Unfortunately based on Goko's record I'm afraid that this "upcoming" matchmaking will start out buggy and nearly unusable, so it may be a while before they come up with something good enough that I'm willing to pay for.

Rules Questions / Re: rules for Shanty town
« on: April 14, 2013, 12:03:28 pm »
The player Mightyclaus mentioned was confused because of the usual lack of understanding as to what "+2 Actions" means; I don't think the rulebook needs to clarify that in the rules for every single card that gives extra actions.  The only way Shanty Town's text can cause confusion is if the player still doesn't really understand what "+2 Actions" means.

After playing about a dozen games or so on Goko (enough for an opinion), here's what I can say about it:

It's not as bad as you'd think, it's not as good as you'd hope.

And unfortunately, this is what is going to keep Goko afloat. It is depressing to see a company get away with providing a thoroughly mediocre product, but as long as they are just "good enough," they have sole rights to many of the games that the players desperately want.

Agreed.  Goko is good enough and the price is low enough that if they just get automatch working I will pay for the sets -- I don't really have a problem with the speed or interface.

But it is annoying to know that if Goko actually had to compete with other Dominion implementations they'd sink faster than a lead anvil.  They will get my money not because I'm enthusiastic about their product, but because it's (nearly) adequate and they have a monopoly.

And also, you keep saying that Donald complained about freeloaders, but I don't think tthat's true. He complained (and rightfully, imo) that people were arguing against monetizing online Dominion. IIRC, those arguments weren't made against people who would have paid for Iso. Rather, it was addressing the entitled idea that people shouldn't have to pay for what was once free to them.

I can only remember him talking about freeloaders when people were complaining either that Goko was too expensive or that it didn't have all the sets and therefore wasn't worth spending any money on.  I don't believe he ever talked about it in response to criticisms of Goko's interface or features.

So far I have not spent any money on Goko because of the lack of good auto-match.  If they ever put that in I will likely buy the whole package.  But I really miss being able to take a 15-20 minute break from work and play a game or two in that time.

Right now I only play with a group of friends from college, one of whom already purchased all the sets.

My basic impression of Goko is that it is serviceable but not exceptional.  For the weekly games I play with the college friends it functions well enough for us to play.

EDIT: I forgot, the ability to create random decks with certain restrictions is very important too.

Rules Questions / Re: Native village: can you look at the top card?
« on: April 10, 2013, 08:57:49 am »
Has the author of Dominion ever settled the rule in this forum or elsewhere?

Although I doubt Donald X has ruled on this specific issue, one thing he has said repeatedly is that he considers Dominion to have a general, implied rule common to most games -- if you aren't told you can do something, you can't do it.  It's not necessary for cards to explicitly tell you not to do things.

You are correct that neither the rules nor clarifications (I guess?) say you cannot look at the next card before deciding.  However, this doesn't mean there's an ambiguity or confusion.  What's more important is that the card doesn't say you *can* look at the next card, therefore you can't.

I believe there's a rule somewhere in the book that tells you you are not allowed to look at cards in your current deck.  Unless this rule is explicitly over-ruled by a card, you have to follow that.

Rules Questions / Re: Mistake on Beggar
« on: March 11, 2013, 05:28:20 am »
Not really a rules question, but this seemed like the best place.

Donald, Beggar might be the one card you want to change in future editions. It doesn't say "you may discard this from your hand". Strictly speaking that's a mistake, and you've taken care to have "from your hand" everywhere else, but of course in practice nobody will misunderstand how to use it. So it wouldn't really be a rules change, just a correction.

I don't think that's accurate.  "Discard" assumes from your hand and AFAIK most of the cards just say "discard", not "discard from the hand".  Reveal and trash specify the location, but not discard.

Goko Dominion Online / Re: Goko UI makes me want to...
« on: March 10, 2013, 04:08:18 am »
Why is it not a valid argument when people are feeling entitled to it? Isn't that proof enough that it is a valid argument?

No, that's not how arguments work.

And I didn't say Destierro had to purchase Goko.  He's perfectly free to do whatever he wants.  However, the reasoning that he's entitled to play online for free because he bought the physical sets is not valid.  He's not paying for "it" again, because he hasn't paid for it in the first place.

I guess I wasn't reading it as entitled, but you can look at such a statement as a financial rather than a moral argument.  I haven't bought more than Base, Intrigue, and Seaside (IRL) because I don't want to spend more money than that on Dominion -- I am absolutely not saying that RGG is wrong to charge for additional expansions, just that I'm not willing to pay more money than I have at the moment.

Goko Dominion Online / Re: Goko UI makes me want to...

I won't.

I dislike the UI intensely, and I refuse to pay for something that I have already bought. I have all the physical parts of dominion, I don't want to pay for them again.

I will really, really miss isotropic.

Why do we keep hearing this argument?  This is not a valid argument.  Buying a DVD doesn't entitle you to a copy on your computer, particular when the DVD was released prior to such technology being available.

So Destierro must purchase Goko, because it's not a valid argument that he doesn't want to pay for it again?

Baptismal (revised)
$4 - Action
Trash one Copper or Curse from your hand. If you do:
+ 1 Card
+ 1 Action
If you reveal a hand with no Copper or Curses, gain a Gold.

You can't say "If you reveal..." when nothing on the card has told you to reveal your hand (well, I guess you technically can but that part of the card will never activate.)

LastFootnote:

The attack portion is problematic because when played repeatedly, it can wipe out your opponents' turns. You should include a clause so that this only hits players with 5 or more cards in hand.

I don't know about that; you have to trash Crusader before you even know if they have the cards.  The only way to wipe out an opponents' turn is if you play 5 Crusaders (trashing them all) and they happen to have a hand of entirely attack cards and treasure.  This seems like a reasonable edge case to me.  (As I read the card, KC/TR does not work with the trash part.)

Dominion General Discussion / "Missing the reshuffle"
« on: March 04, 2013, 04:08:08 am »
I'm still basically a Dominion beginner, and I'm having a hard time understanding the concept of a card "missing the reshuffle" -- I feel like I only sort of half-understand what this means, and I'm also not sure how the concept applies when you're actually playing (i.e. how to recognize it or avoid it)

Dominion General Discussion / Starting with 14 coppers
« on: February 11, 2013, 04:53:07 am »
A while back on BGG, there was a discussion with newer players about the wisdom of buying copper.  Someone said something to the effect that if one player starts with 14 coppers instead of 7 they will lose 99% of the time.

This seems like an interesting question to me; having all that money in your deck at the start would let you buy more 5's but you'd have to wait a while to get them back.  How much of an advantage do you think the regular deck person would have over the 14 copper/3 estate deck?

And for now, either we can just accept it, live descriptivist lives, and go on to live in an English where disinterested has two easily-confused meanings.  Or we can stick to our roots and fight the change, preserving a word in English that doesn't really have a perfect substitute.

The problem is that "fighting the change" doesn't do anything.  Language changes and there's nothing you can do to stop it; if you are in a position of power like copy editor or teacher, you can enforce certain rules in a small sphere, but that's about the limit of what you can do.  Other than complaining when people "misuse" things on the Internet.

Also I want to support AJD on the dialect issue; while it's perfectly accurate to say that people who use dialect features not in the "standard" will be perceived as uneducated or stupid, that doesn't mean they actually are stupid, and it doesn't mean that the dialects are objectively worse than the standard.  The standard dialect is standard mostly because of arbitrary factors, *not* because it was selected from all the dialects as the "best" one.  The notion of a "best" dialect is wrong at its core, because all dialects are equally expressive and no dialect is more or less complex than another.
