Dominion General Discussion / Re: Game Selection
« on: June 22, 2011, 04:52:33 pm »
There does need to be something precluding people from getting repeatedly matched vs people they don't want to, but i dont think this is it.  The reason i refuse 90% of the time is because I sat at the automatch screen for 20 seconds waiting but the other guy never accepted due to being afk.

(10% of the time it's because I have to leave, or because i have 15 minutes and its a colony game)

Once you get 'good enough' at golf you're playing at 0 handicap against people with 0 handicap, and don't have to worry about losing to it.  Most tournaments played with handicaps are for fun or charity anyway.

The same could be said of dominion.  You're not going to handicap yourself when you're playing against theory for your always-valuable ratings points, you're going to do it when you're playing around the kitchen table for something to do on an evening, against people who otherwise refuse to play versus you.

Actually, maybe I can use this as a way to get people to play dominion with me again.

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Black Market without supply cards
« on: June 20, 2011, 01:43:32 pm »
To me, this sounds really easy for "gameplay" situations, although it would take you 10-20 minutes to set up:

1) Put all randomizer cards into a "black market baggie"
2) Put all blank cards into a "black market deck baggie": Number them (2 of each number)

When you play black market, you pull out 3 cards from baggie, when you buy the card, you pull out the 1st 2 numbered blank cards:
1 goes next to the randomizer card you bought in some set aside area, the 2nd goes into your discard.  When you draw a blank, you just have to compare back to the original, which is sitting right next to the like-numbered card.

Cleanup is just a matter of re-sorting the blanks and re-bagging the randomizers, which is fast and simple.
You're not going to find a better setup than that for black market.

Dominion Articles / Re: Hunting Party
« on: June 18, 2011, 06:05:50 pm »
I think scout was probably an error here:  you want your hunting parties to build you into your ideal hand of estate+treasure+baron(+province, assuming you've already bought 1), and having a scout means that your hp might find a scout , which maybe it'll bypass a lot of green for you, but the hunting party does that already.  If your entire deck consists of copper/hp/silver/gold/baron/estate/province, you only have 6 diff cards & hp will almost always find that hand.

Anyway, assuming that I read the margin data correctly, my "idea" at 1:30am was without any merit whatsoever:

Regardless of the particular cards present, the win rate for player 1, the ratio of games with even/uneven # of turns, and the winrate given either an even or uneven number of turns were constant.
That is to say:  Playing in seat #2 is equally bad in the presence + absence of all individual cards.

Data:
% of Games ended with an uneven number of turns: P1 Win % if even #turns ;  P1 Win% if uneven # turns
All Games
.554.532.635
Witch
.555.535.630
.552.530.633
.551.537.619
.553.529.624
.552.528.634
.556.533.630
(Minion Familiar Ghost ship Pawn Mountebank, for the previous 5 rows)

Just to verify that I'm analyzing the data correctly:
for the first column in the margin ; I assume it is point difference, player A minus player B ?  And player A is 1st player, listed to the left?  And the 0.5 point indicates that the 2nd player missed a turn?

Drawing potion without 4$ is just as lame, if not more so.

Actually had an interesting thought about trying to correlate position to win rate given the availability of this card.  Particularly:

Given that mountebank is available, does the p1 vs p2 win rate shift relative to the average?  If so, it is possible that top players will have a lower 'effect with' card X simply by virtue of being in the p2 position more often than average.

I'd enjoy playing with the data a bit, but i'm not quite ready to learn python yet...although perhaps i should just do it.

Alternatively, I could get the big tarball and just use what i know...where's that located at again?

Excluding prizes, I have a terrible "effect with" rate with the most powerful cards: Why?
Idea 1:  These cards are powerful 5$s and sometimes shuffle luck will bite you and you will lose.  This is a somewhat boring hypothesis, but could be confirmed by a systematic negative effect among top players: (Yes, i'm being somewhat presumptuous putting myself in this company, but I started by looking at myself because i'm trying to find places to improve my game)

                      Rod|CFrisk|Theory|Rrenaud|Boloni
Mountebank:     -1.2|-0.7|-1.4|+0.4|+0.6
Witch :             -0.7|+0.4|-0.6|-2.9|-0.7
Familiar:          -0.5|+1.5|-2.1|+0.1|-0.2
Ghost Ship:      -1.3|+0.5|-0.9|-0.7|+0.2
Ambassador:    -1.1|-0.5|+0.6|+1.8|-0.3
(Control: pawn) -0.2|+0.4|+0.7|+0.5|-0.0

While each player other than me has 1 of the 4 power 5$ cards they are strong with, and ambassador probably does not belong in the list, it does seem to me that each of these cards has a pretty strong negative impact overall.

My conclusion: Look at how i play ambassador & improve that.  Worry about the 5$ attacks later on.

With hunting party as a (more than) viable alternative to minion, i would gladly avoid minions to leave my opponents with weakened horse traders.  Would probably even open horse traders/silver to get started on the hunting party train asap and dissuade them from transitioning into minion themselves.  3c/e+silver+ht=hp ; hp+regular hand+ht/silver=gold seems like a strong first few turns.

Of course, my "effect with" for minion is -1.5, so i try to avoid the card as often as posssible

Captain_Frisk takes out his losses on level 20+s.
If he just lost, he won't play anyone rated lower than level 20.

That's quite sporting.

This explains why i keep getting stuck with 3rd position in 3p games!  I think i have a new algorithm for deciding whether or not to play a 2er or 3er.  (I've just lost 3 straight 3p games by a cumulative total of 3 points, all from the 3rd position with one fewer turn than everyone else and 8$ in hand, so I'm pretty much done sitting there!) If only i'd known not to play quick 2s to fix my losing streak in between!

I've long been wanting an opportunity to convince people to look into the win/loss rates based on which cards miss shuffles.  If your 2nd shuffle misses 2 estates, and your opponent's misses their 4-cost opener, you're well on your way to winning.  Similarly, if your potion or montebanc misses your second shuffle, more often than not you might as well resign.
