Even hardcore prescriptivists allow that it's OK to start a sentence with a conjunction. Like, for example, the practice is specifically endorsed by the Chicago Manual of Style.

How would you go about "beaming" up a Gold from your discard pile to the top of your deck during the buy phase (so no actions...)?
Play Venture, buy Mandarin, for one of likely many solutions.

ed: I Possess you, make you buy a Noble Brigand, reveal Watchtower from my hand and put the Gold back on top of my deck.

ed2: Play a Horn of Plenty, gaining any Treasure card. Play a Venture, shuffling the other new Treasure card above the Gold and leaving the Gold on top of the deck.

As far as I can tell, nothing but IGG, a played Action card, Secret Chamber's reaction (which requires a played action card), filling your hand during cleanup, or one of a few "at the start of your turn" effects can ever move anything into anyone's hand. IGG is intriguing but it specifically names Copper as the card to be put in your hand.

The one hilarious loophole that has occurred to me is that if you consider the game to end during the Buy phase (though I'm pretty sure it actually ends after Cleanup) then you get your Island mat's contents back at that time... but of course you can't get the Gold to your Island mat either since you'd have to play the Island!

I'm stumped.

pre-edit for ninja'd: A-ha, I wondered if this was some kind of puzzlemaking error ;)

Combing the card list I can't see any way to move a card into your hand from any not-in-your-hand location during anybody's buy phase, with the sole exception of playing IGG yourself and putting a Copper in your hand from the Supply. I may be missing something though.

Yeah, I have questions:

-Can it be someone else's buy phase? or does it have to be mine?
-Does it have to be the exact same copy of Gold that was in my discard pile?

Note that no matter how these questions are answered I don't have a solution ;) Noble Brigand/Secret Chamber is close but no cigar, as others have pointed out.

When I started my 2nd account I think I got to the high 30s (where I normally sit) in a couple hundred games.

Rules Questions / Re: Another query - Cellar/Tunnel/Watchtower
« on: December 19, 2011, 04:44:53 pm »
Drawing for Cellar is not concurrent with discarding; it's strictly afterward. If you put the Golds on top of your deck with Watchtower you must do so before you draw (and so you will draw them).

Possession/Outpost
This does actually give them an extra turn, you know!

Now if you Possess them twice, and play Outpost on the second turn...

Yeah, I got that thanks. Hope I don't play you or anyone else who's had their sense of humor removed anytime soon.
You were being rude, not funny.

Here's another one that's much too good to settle for just upvoting it ;D

OK, the Successful Black Man meme can be... vaguely offensive... so I'm linking instead of inlining:

I already posted a session report, but I'm rather partial to this game where I bought all 10 Curses in one turn for the win:

(Noting again that I only had to buy out the Curses because I stupidly played my Coppers and couldn't buy the last Grand Market.)

Dominion Articles / Re: Updating the Top 5 lists
« on: December 07, 2011, 09:09:19 pm »
I never seem to make this work, as my NVs invariably set aside other NVs. Is there a right number of these to avoid this problem, or is more always better?
It happens. It's fine. Yes, more is generally better.

Blind drawing to the NV mat is the typical use case for NV, and it can be quite strong. The main thing that limits NV's usefulness on many boards is that you usually need lots of them, and you really don't want to overpay for them, so you need some ready source of +Buy early in the game. Then you also need some reason to want an NV-based engine of course.

Bit of a nombo IMO. The whole is equal to the sum of its parts.

Other Games / Re: What other games are as good as Dominion?

The game i like most (together with Dominion) is Agricola. Anyone here playing at play-agricola.com?

I have it bookmarked, and I'll get there eventually; definitely a top 5 game for me. Lately my non-Dominion obsession has been Brass (on brass.orderofthehammer.com).
In this post we find mentioned my all-time top 3 board games ;D

There was about a month some time ago that I was continuously in 10 concurrent games on orderofthehammer. I had to limit it to 10 at a time since otherwise I would spend like 3+ hours a day at work contemplating Brass moves.

ColecoVision what-what.

Oh, also I play all of Harmonix's fake guitar games religiously. I got hooked on them back with Amplitude actually, and that game was fun as hell even without a fake guitar. I own the semi-real guitar peripheral for RB3 and played it most of the way through Hard mode before other aspects of life got in the way.

With regard to Remodel, this is similar to the Ironworks/Trader issue, but even more clear: If there is no "trashed card", then there is no value for "the trashed card" that you can add $2 to. Put another way, you can't follow the 2nd instruction since a necessary referent ("the trashed card") doesn't exist, so you don't follow the instruction.

The thornier question is why you do gain a $0 card if you trash nothing with Forge. The easy answer is to refer to the FAQ, which echoes Tables/play2draw's reasoning: "This is different from how cards like Expand work if you do not trash anything, because Forge looks at the total, not at any one card's cost."

I used to play all the adventure games on PC. I fell in love with the genre when Leasure suit Larry came out.
Well I played all the Zork games, and Hitchhiker's Guide, and the Enchanter series! (No, I'm actually not quite that old. I got the big Infocom pack on a bunch of 3 1/2" floppies in the mid-90s.)

I've long had a console gaming slant, particularly RPGs, and most recently Dark Souls. I do play PC games on occasion, most recently Portal 2 and Torchwood. I'll probably be playing Diablo 3. Given my other hobbies (cycling and board games) I don't think I have the time to commit to Skyrim.

editmoat, secret chamber, moat indicates that you still have the moat in hand
This doesn't make sense in a 2p game (there can be no reliable benefit in giving your opponent extra information), but in a multiplayer game where you are looking to influence your LHO's Reaction decisions in hopes that they will influence the attacker's subsequent choices it's conceivable. I'm not confident this is what AJD is going for, but it's a legitimate answer IMO!

Game 2: Made absolutely the wrong choice in opening Wharf. Hunting Party was the only remotely good option other than just taking the Ambassador for $5.
Game 3: Shrugged off Ghost Ship thinking Shanty Town would be too good a defense. And while it is a decent defense, it's not enough.
Game 4: Dunno. I'm 50/50 on whether this was pure bad luck or whether Lookout was stronger than I expected here. I was aware of its use as a sorta-kinda soft counter to Bureaucrat, but that usage really doesn't wow me.
Game 5: Rotten luck. I never managed to hit a Masquerade on a Possession turn.

All in all, I got outplayed. Congrats to v3ck on advancing.

Auto-playing Village is an absolute non-starter. There are meaningful decisions about when to play Village all the time.
