There wasn't much enthusiasm for my card, which was:

Quote
Ferret
Types: Action
Cost: $4
You may trash this. If you do, +$ equal to the cost in coins of an Action card in the trash that you choose.

While this is in play, when you buy a card, gain a Ferret from the Supply or trash.

The evolution of it is a bit convoluted so I won't say much but here are a couple of comments. I thought the tension between trashing now for the benefit, or keeping to accumulate more ferrets could lead to some interesting decisions. I definitely wanted both buying it as a one shot $4 or as a way to breed more ferrets for a mega-turn to be viable depending on the board. Probably as the card is the incentive for keeping them is not enough. An earlier version had a + Buy (someone suggested this in a comment I think as well). At one stage I also allowed any action card to be ferreted out of the trash. I'm curious to know whether the card would have been more popular with these changes (as below),  or whether people think the whole concept is uninteresting.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Cards you always remember wrong
« on: September 24, 2013, 12:42:08 pm »
I realised too late today that I misremembered Doctor as discarding the cards that aren't trashed. It made my experimental Doctor+Tunnel opening (which would probably have been a bit dubious even with Doctor working as I thought it did) spectacularly ineffective.

Chapterhouse
Types: Action
Cost: $5
+1 Action. +$1. Draw until you have 6 cards in hand. Discard 2 cards.

When you buy this, each other player draws a card. When you gain this, each other player with at least 4 cards in hand discards a card.

My card, chapterhouse, got a bit of discussion and moderate success. In case anyone cares here is its Secret History.

I like cards that give a positive benefit to opponents but there aren't many which do this kind of thing on buy/gain (only Embassy?). The first thought was allowing opponents to trash something when you gain the card, but filtering seemed more in the spirit of Hinterlands. Having thought of that, splitting the draw+discard of filtering to correspond to the buy+gain of buying is a natural thing to do and gives an interesting effect when the card is gained in other ways. Possibly in retrospect separating the on buy and on gain is both confusing and makes the card hard to balance. I should probably have left it as an on gain filter one card for opponents. Now, what top works with that bottom? It needs to be strong so that you would be happy to get it despite the opponents filtering, but not super strong because of the potential on gain attack. The first thoughts were something like: Warehouse with +$1, +1 Buy, or Filter 2 cards with +$2. I'd like the on buy/gain effect to happen several times per game so I'd also like the card to stack a bit better that these (incidentally I certainly want it to be non-terminal because of this). A filtering card which maintains hand size (eg +2 Cards, +$1, Discard 1 Card) looks too strong, but the "draw up to x, discard y" idea keeps some of this hand size maintaining feel in a more manageable way and would work better in multiples than say warehouse variants. An extra feature is that the card can counter discard attacks, in particular its own on gain attack. The name is supposed to have a communal feel to it (matching the opponents benefit), also an ecclesiastical one because trashers often do and I thought of it at the same time as the opponent may trash on gain benefit. I'm rubbish at thinking of good card names and didn't have the imagination to come up with anything better as the card evolved.

Anyway thanks to everyone who commented on or voted for the card. Happy to hear other comments.

Looking forward to reading all the dark age submissions. So far I've got two ideas; one which is probably unworkable, and one which doesn't feel quite Dark Agey enough!

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: New Dominion CONTEST

Wow. I'm very surprised and pleased that my card won something. Also somewhat embarrassed since there are a lot of cards that look to me to be just as deserving! I agree with popsofctown that Relay Rider could consider itself unlucky.

Thanks to Dominion_Contests for running this and providing the prizes. I'll PM to claim my Governor shortly. Congrats to the other winners. Artisan is definitely a worthy winner.

Thinking about the card again. Probably whoever suggested that it should have a no victory card clause is correct. Other than that I'm not convinced it will be overpowered at $5 although this is obviously a concern. Haggler is a natural comparison and clearly Benefactor will often be better. On the other hand Haggler has a lot more flexibility (Province and Gold, Gold and $5 card etc.) which is lost in Benefactor. Perhaps there is a better choice for the vanilla effect although making it $1 looks weak.

Generally, I'm still interested in other ideas for cards which would work at any cost. It would be good to hear any thoughts here or in this thread.

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: A card at any cost

The gain on $3 Border Village has to obligatory really for it to be not strictly better than Village. I can see it would be rather board dependent but that's not in itself a bad thing. I still think that $5 is the biggest problem price. You're not often going to want a $4 card with a Village thrown in instead of a $5 card.

Rats at different costs (uniform or  varying) is a very interesting thought. Thanks for that. It's given me the germ of an idea for the Dark Ages round of LastFootnote's contest when it comes up!

Variants and Fan Cards / A card at any cost
« on: September 02, 2013, 07:15:59 am »
Is it possible to have a (not absurdly contrived) card which would be balanced at any one of a wide range of costs?

My entry for Dominion_contests' contest was an attempt at this:

Benefactor
$? - Action
+$2
While this is in play, when you buy a card costing at most what this card costs, gain a copy of it.
---
Setup: Choose a card at random from the remaining kingdom cards in the game; its cost is this card's cost.

It's clearly strong at 5 (and 4?) and the consensus so far seems to be that it is too strong.

Of the official cards Border Village come closest. How would this variant thereon work:

Randomised Border Village
$? - Action
+1 Card; +2 Actions
--
When you gain this, gain a card costing less than this.
---
Setup: Before the game roll a die and add one to the outcome. The result is this card's cost.

I guess it's not ridiculous but probably weak at $5 and a bit strong at $3 or $4.

Maybe either or both of these could be fixed with a bit of tinkering. More generally, I'd be interested to hear other peoples ideas on making a card that would work at any cost.

Thanks for doing the testing. When I came up with the card I did have in mind that it should be a tempting trap on some boards so I'm not too worried if buying and playing it indiscriminately is a poor strategy. Having said that obviously I want it to be a good buy rather more often than Scout!

I like Rinkworks' suggestion of being able to discard 2 to draw 1. A variant on that (not sure if it's better or worse) would be to allow the top card to be seen before choosing. The simplest wording for this is probably something like "Each other player looks at the top card of their deck and either draws it and discards two cards, or puts it back on the deck."

Congratulations to the winner. I voted for both the top two cards this time.

My card (Lifeboat/Beresford) wasn't popular but I'm interested to see if anything can be salvaged from it.

I do still like the set aside to play when you want mechanic but the details obviously weren't quite right here. The point (as the name alludes to) was to resuce you from having several terminals but no village or lots of money but no +Buy. The trashing option was a late addition to make it a bit more flexible and perhaps this was a mistake. Anyway it would be great to hear anyone's ideas for how to improve this card.

Of the suggestions so far I like Academy best.

Would the creator of the Conference Room card consider a name change to a medieval equivalent?

If so, I'd suggest Chapter Room or Chapter House - "a building or room attached to a cathedral or collegiate church in which meetings are held. They can also be found in medieval monasteries." (Wikipedia) See also Chapter.

I certainly don't feel hugely attached to the name so if we can come up with a better alternative then I am happy for it to be changed. The point of Conference Room was to be a more scientific sounding version of Council Room. Ideally I would like a name like this which references both Council Room and Laboratory. I'm not so keen on Chapter House since it doesn't do this and the other cards with ecclesiastical names involve trashing rather than drawing. It would be good to hear if anyone else has some ideas.

Thanks very much to everyone who commented on and voted for my card. After lowly placings in most of the earlier rounds I'm amazed to have won one.

I agree with the comments that the benefit of the oponents' filtering is hard to judge and probably greater that it looks. I almost did cost the card at $3 and maybe this is a better price. Hopefully someone will be able to do some testing (unfortunately my few dominion playing partners probably won't be keen on experimenting with new cards!).

Archer (Ametrine) was really close to my vandal http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=2553.0 . So I gave 3 points ^^
I didn't want to submit it because I don't like to take back ideas, I want to create more stuff !

Thanks for voting for my card. You're right it does look like your Vandal. However this was definitely a case of us both having the same idea independently rather than plagiarism. Best of luck with the remaining contests.

I was your opponent in that Fool's Gold/Tournament game. Thanks for the 5 minutes 53 seconds of fame! I'm glad I didn't make too many egregious mistakes.

For what it's worth I think I considered Fool's Gold for a while too but without a cheap +buy and no trashing but Moneylender it looked too unlikely to get a good density of them. I don't know whether this really is the case or whether I just got lucky with the Tournament hit.

Thanks again for the game. Hope to play you again sometime.
