Dominion General Discussion / Re: Talisman -- oh how little we meet
« on: November 05, 2012, 09:48:13 am »
Edit: somebody want to fill me in on how Talisman, Quarry, Border Village works? I thought the cost reduction worked for the cards gained by the BV too...

Quarry reduces the cost of action cards gained by Border Village, but Talisman won't gain you extra cards this way since it triggers on buy, not gain.

The US remake had Joel Mchale (Jeff, Community) portray the role of Roy. I bet he's glad it didn't get picked up :)

General Discussion / Re: Dvorak keyboard

The Hebrew keyboard is bilingual, using QWERTY for English and a standard Hebrew layout, like so: http://www.hebrew-keyboards.com/IMG_0926.jpg . There are also trilingual keyboards for native Arabic and Russian speakers.

English is common here pretty much as it is in The Netherlands (which is the non-English speaking country I found the easiest to get by in). Lots of movies and TV shows in English here as well, mandatory secondary language at school, etc.

But most of all it's the lack of a localized version of Dominion that forces us to learn English from an early age :P

* BTW, beer in Hebrew is pronounced Bee-ra

I'm curious about that.  What is it like, working as a programmer or doctor or ___ in a foreign country, where so much of what you do and learn depends on English?

In a typical Israeli start-up filled with native Hebrew speakers, all verbal communication is done in Hebrew but emails, documentation and of course the code itself is strictly in English.
It's pretty easy getting used to it when learning English from grade school.

EDIT: I guess that Hebrew being a right-to-left language makes it harder to use technical terms in English when writing Hebrew text, at least when comparing to Dutch and the likes, so it's simply easier to do everything in English to begin with.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Dominion Reminders
« on: September 03, 2012, 04:05:20 am »
For real-life Seaside games: there's a reason some of the cards are bright orange, and I don't think it's to make them easier to find if you're opponent lets you fish them out of your discard pile.

Playing a 4p RL game this week with Treasury and Walled Village I had to keep reminding the other players they can return those to their decks. This made us think that return-to-deck-on-cleanup cards (along with Scheme) could have used a color notion of their own, perhaps something similar to that of the duration cards.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Greatest Isotropic Moments of 2012

We should have a thread for those "5 of one card" hands. I got 5 Conspirators today. Didn't someone post a pic of 5 Rabbles once?

I seldom get a 5 copper hand, as early as the first or second turn!

Dominion Isotropic / Re: Dougz - I would like to send you money
« on: August 18, 2012, 09:32:11 am »
Some part of me wants to make this a kickstarter just to see how much money we can send to Doug altogether.

How about a kickstarter for DougZ to publish Isotropic server code with the copyright-infringing elements removed?
Then someone can put up fan-iso using cards from the variants forum.

I think he has.  Someone else can find it.

Androminion is open source.

When mixing sets up, the rule for using Shelters is similar to the Platinum / Colony rule.

Will there always be either all three Shelters or none in the starting decks or do the rules for mixed sets include a way to start with one or two Shelters plus two or one Estates?

Sounds straight forward - either all or none.

These guys stick together.

dor, Insomniac, please duel to the death so only one of you has a Cultist avatar.

I believe I used it first. Insomniac, please trash your avatar and pick one from the three cards revealed today.

12
Squire is the second card of the revealed 9 which mentions Silver.

Maybe that will be its least used effect, but I still wanted to mention it with Feodum around.
It seems that Dark Ages is going to offer a lot of possibilities to the players.
You can go mega fail/mega engine or you can play it close to the vest and try to put your money to good use.

In any case, it seems like it's going to be even more groundbreaking than Hinterlands.

It's a bit like Cosmic Encounter which has a set of rules, but even more cards and abilities that break those rules.

Well, Donald X did say this is the Johnny expansion.

Where does this term come from?

13
So, since Madman isn't in the supply, then even though there's a whole stack of ten of them, things like Jester and Ambassador have no effect on it. Right?

Jester might work, since it doesn't mention anything about the supply: "... gains a copy of the discarded card...".

Ambassador is trickier because you can't return a Madman to the supply, but there is no "if" clause so presumably the other players can gain it, though this is probably only relevant with Possession.

14
Squire + Watchtower?

Any attack you want...for 2!  (As long as you have Watchtower in hand.)

Whoa, yeah. Watchtower definitely boosts some cards in Dark Ages. At minimum it opens up tons of new options (like gaining 3 Silvers instead of Feodum).

Or 4 with Trader.

Ironworks Cultist, trash with Watchtower, draw three cards.

Cultist costs $5

15
a strategy to save up madmen and not using them, then use it for one super big turn might be good. with lots of +buy ofc.

for each Madman played in one turn,
handsize: 5 -> 8 -> 14 -> 26

worth only if there are much money in deck, xD
Now if only we had a cheap card that can give both money and buys...  :P

16
I bet Squire is the main reason Graverobber can't get actions costing less than $3 from the trash.

50 are Ruins. It's likely that these too have randomizer cards, just as every other supply pile in the game.

It's not true that every supply pile has a randomizer card:

  • Potion from Alchemy
  • Colony and Platinum from Prosperity
  • The base cards from Intrigue
  • The base cards from Base Cards

Although the last two are functionally equivalent to the base cards from Dominion, so they don't really count.  It's also worth noting that the prize cards don't have randomizers, although they aren't supply cards.

Potions, Platinums and the base cards do have randomizers, but not for randomizing. I believe their purpose is to lay face down at the bottom of their supply piles so it would be clearer how many piles have ended.

Prizes don't have those since they are not in the supply.

18
Bizarro question for the day:

Can Ruins show up in the Black Market deck?  That'd suck almost as bad as getting Treasure Map.

They can't, because they are not part of the kingdom cards, just as Curses, Potions and Platinums can't.

So can +1 action, KC turns it into a village minus the draw

No, TR would turn the +1 action ruin into a village minus the draw. With KC, it's a Crossroads minus the draw.

Not exactly, since a non-drawing village (like a non-activated Shanty Town) leaves you with 4 cards in hand while TR+RV with only three. The same goes for KC+RV

Indeed. Upgrade and Lookout will both be great here; because they are the (so far) non-terminal trashers.

Also apprentice.

Introductions / Any Israeli players around?
« on: July 05, 2012, 03:35:52 am »
Hi,

I'm not a very active member of the community, though I do play on isotropic on-and-off for the past year.

I've been playing Dominion since I was introduced to the game IRL almost two years ago, and had the pleasure of spreading the word to others, getting them hooked as well. Though isotropic is great, I enjoy the game more when playing with friends, discussing strategies and meeting new people.

I was wondering if there are other Israeli players I am unfamiliar with. I know of about twenty give or take, but there must be others out there. Show yourself, and we can play IRL when isotropic goes down forever.

Will the games be logged retroactively?

Some of the cartoon art (i.e. Shanty Town) could be changed.

I second that. Shanty Town, Navigator, Harem etc.
