Dominion: Dark Ages Previews / Best set to mix with DA?
« on: August 23, 2012, 03:26:30 am »
Played a couple DA-only games, and they're quite... complex.

Still want to see a good density of DA cards, so I was thinking of maybe picking it and one other set to mix randomizers with.  Any thoughts on what would work well?

Hinterlands is an obvious choice because it's one of my favorite sets, but it tends to favor large decks and DA seems to want trashing.

Base would certainly dilute the complexity, but maybe too much.

Intrigue by itself is not one one of my favorite sets.

Seaside has some interesting possibilities, I'd love to try ambassadoring rats...  haha.  Band of Misfits + Treasure Map would make for a fast game...

My first choice to try is prosperity though I think.  DA certainly changes the complexion of bishop (although may make it totally not worth it), KC is always fun, and a game with Mint/Counterfeit has serious possibilities.

Cornucopia gets an honorable mention.  Probably a fun combination, but I was thinking more of using a full-size expansion.  DA seems to reward diversity, so it's a natural fit.

Anyone else have thoughts?

The FAQ for Tunnel in the Hinterlands rulebook specifically addresses this: http://www.riograndegames.com/uploads/Game/Game_396_gameRules.pdf

My wife tried to convince me that she should be able to use BoM as a reaction (specifically market square).  My argument was that you don't "play" a reaction, you reveal it, set it aside, or whatever the card says to do.  However, I couldn't find anything in the rulebook that clarified the issue.

Any thoughts?

With quarry on the board I look at the cost of the best action cards since quarry is a gold for actions and a copper for everything else.  You don't need multiple worker's villages early, so I'd probably start with quarry and jump to the power cards quicker (The only talisman play early looks like multiple silvers, which isn't that great in comparison).  Being the first to play goons/torturer will be an advantage.  With border village I'd probably start BV/torturer for the "free" village and the card draw.

Goons+Peddler is stupid good obviously once you can get to $0 peddlers.  WV only turbocharges that combo.  You definitely do want to get village/goons chains going before your opponent.  It's probably even worth taking curses from torturer to set it up sooner.

Don't have the log, but I did it in a game where my opponent had Pirate Shipped away all my money and there wasn't good money from actions.  I was clearly too far ahead to be caught, and he just wanted to be difficult.  There was one province left and that seemed the quickest way to be able to end the game.

I have nothing to add to this thread except I've been wondering the same thing.  I wasn't sure if it was just my account, but it seems to be widespread.

Simon Says
Action - $6P
For the player on the left's next turn, he must reveal his hand and let you make all decisions.  He must only follow directions you preface with "Simon Says".  He gains a curse each time he follows a direction that didn't start with "Simon Says".  Any cards of his that are trashed are set aside and returned to his discard pile at end of turn (but only if Simon said so).

Game Reports / Re: IRL nombo? Counting House + Goons + Inn
« on: May 07, 2012, 07:49:22 pm »
good thoughts in this thread.

definitely using counting house to draw coppers and THEN discard them with inns was something I didn't pick up on during the game.  There's still the problem that the more inns you play the faster you trigger a reshuffle, which is something you REALLY don't want.

Game Reports / IRL nombo? Counting House + Goons + Inn
« on: May 05, 2012, 06:54:29 pm »
Played an IRL 2 player colony game where (unfortunately) we both chose the same strategy.  Play goons, buy copper, use Inn to avoid reshuffles, and use counting house to pull all the coppers out of the discard.  The only other relevant card was Market to support goons with extra buys and a few coin.

It fizzled for a couple reasons:
-No card drawing
-Inn is a disappearing village.
-Harder than we guessed to avoid reshuffling, and then you're stuck drawing hands of five coppers.  Buying Inn lets you shuffle cards back in, but actually playing them burns through your deck faster.

Getting to play a max of 3 goons (inn, inn, goons, goons, goons) or two and a counting house was a huge drawback and ended up with not outstounding VP counts.

I did manage to hit the combo once perfectly and pull off a two colony turn, but other than that it was nothing spectacular.

Governor combos well with Lab/wharf+village (or even itself if you're willing to give your opponent extra cards*).  Draw your whole deck, gain a gold, draw it, remodel it to province.

Especially hilarious is ruining engines by flooding your opponents with silver.  Had that happen to me and just had to laugh.

*especially good if you know it will be the last turn or you have a handsize reduction attack.

Don't have a game log, but I won a game against a pirate shipper by tradering a province for 8 silvers late in the game to let me buy up the last couple provinces. ;D  There weren't any non-terminal +coins, so my usual anti-ship strategies weren't in play.

I'm not sure whether he was just messing with me or whether he had a legitimate strategy and just didn't see that move coming, but he did have me almost ground to a halt at that point.
