Introductions / Perhaps I should have started here

Hi, I'm Big Tuna though I'd likely change my name on occasion if Council Room would recognize all my names as one entity.

I work in a factory as a finisher of wood crown moldings and various kitchen and bath trinkets.

I was in love with SW:CCG back in the day and hope to one day devote some time to turning those dusty cards into some kind of deck-building game. I missed playing Star Wars and when Dominion came out I was very tempted but I couldn't pull the trigger because I didn't know if I could be enthused by a game about building a deck. I would like to build the deck then do something with it afterward. I don't know what got into me during the winter of 2010-11 (perhaps a lengthy plant shutdown that saw me at house for 3 straight weeks) but when I saw that I could get into Dominion with the Amazon Big Box for relatively cheap I went for it. But I didn't stop there, I bought Seaside and Intrigue as well dropping $125(?) on a game that I had thoroughly researched and still was feeling lukewarm about.

From that start over the next 6 months I gradually introduced each set until I was caught up with the rest of the Dominion playing public with the arrival of Cornucopia. I was fully aware of Isotropic when I started and I was fully aware that if I got on it I would not leave so I stayed away so I could actually enjoy the early naivete with my fellow game group.

I'm not as good as my rank says because I primarily play 3 player games which I believe restrains stronger players better than a 2 player game does. I am regularly beaten by people of my same level playing in 1v1.

My biggest trap cards (those I'm lured to when I see them on the board and usually lead to my demise) are likely Tunnel and Bishop though it appears my stats for Bishop are getting stronger. Occasionally, I'll veto them just to releave myself the temptation. Do you have any trap cards?

In general, it seems obvious that you should inform your opponent of the rule if he's doing this.  If you were playing with physical cards, you'd have to.  You'd need to know who to give the VP tokens to.  I've informed opponents every time it came up.

However, in this specific case, if Big Tuna was also unaware of the rule, I kind of like the outcome.  They started on equal ground.  One player noticed something weird was happening and figured out what it was, while his opponent didn't.  Big Tuna didn't win because he knew the rules better but because he was paying closer attention to the state of the game.

I probably still wouldn't have done the same, but it's not 100% black and white in my mind.  The fact that he was way behind and enduring multiple Possession plays per turn makes me cut a little more slack as well.

You are awfully generous in your view of my action. If I had been playing this IRL we would have likely played that entire game wrong. My opponent would have take the VP chips because I would have thought they were his. That is likely due to the fact that the Amazon Bix Box pushed me over the edge to buy the game and actually every expansion available at the time. Why does this matter? While I did released each expansion slowly to those with which I game, it was still far faster than the rate the expansions actually came out. And if there is one expansion we breezed past the quickest it was Alchemy. I have never seen a person use Possession IRL that I can recall, let alone with Bishop or I suppose Monument. So I never really scoured forums to find out answers to handle various Possession questions (Granted- most Dominion questions can be answered with, 'read the card' and Possession is no exception). To me Possession just means 'attack!' and I always have view it effects on the possessed and negative. IRL, I would have rolled my eyes as my opponent used my deck to beat me thoroughly.

I was just looking for peoples opinions on this situation. I'm not really sure if I your view is that I should have told him what was happening or if level 40's are above reproach, especially if the scrutiny is by someone as low as myself.

I guess I see the gray in the fact the my opponent seemed to be more familiar than having just played with the base set. I had never had someone use my Bishop to trash my cards and gaining VP for me. I had wrongly assumed, that he was gaining those points but obviously that just an assumption that comes due to my personal lack of enlightenment about Possession.

Honestly, I thought I built the stronger deck. And from the moment I realized he was digging his own grave I would have won before he could have gotten his deck back under control. He might not have even believed he was helping me if I told him.

Nope, this was the point of my post.

Should I have made him aware of what was happening? He had to have been enjoying himself thoroughly up till the tallying of the score.

So you're saying you gave Geronimoo a hard time for his Bank game, and then let this game happen?

This game was before he posted about his game. FWIW

So I recently gave Geronimoo are hard time about not helping an opponent correctly(IMO) playing Bank and I had this game come to my mind.

In this case my noob (ok not a noob, I believe level 15 at the time) ripped me apart with multiple Golem and Possession. Playing a few Possessions per turn and surely enjoying every minute of it. I was panicked and resigned to defeat but I wondered early on in the game if I had developed enough of an early VP chip lead that he might not be able to make it up. But alas, it was strong enough for most games but not for what was ensuing in this one. I would go down in blazing defeat, but I kept checking my VP chip total until I realized what was happening. And he clearly was unaware.

At the end of the he spouted some profanity and left.
Should I have made him aware of what was happening? He had to have been enjoying himself thoroughly up till the tallying of the score.

If I was in a tournament, I'd keep it to myself and take the win just as you did.

The issue with playing online is in a way your always competing to get to the top of the leaderboard (or maybe not, but I generally want to push to the top) so it not exactly like play at home with family and friends where a game has no implication on you 'World Ranking'. That said here inlies the difference between sportsman ship and gamesmanship. The gamesman will use every edge to win at all cost. The sportsman would like to see fully informed competitors battle and see who was the best on that occassion.

But let's put this into a tournament situation. As the sportsman do you reveal the error and let the noob go on to win even though he'll likely be no competition to his next opponent? Or do you use the advantage, as Geronimoo did, and advance to the next round? If I was in his position in a tournament then I don't want to get knocked out of the tournament and I'm likely to be the better competition for the next round opponent. It would be difficult for me to reveal that error and not go on to 'victory'.

edit for typo

If I was in a tournament, I'd keep it to myself and take the win just as you did. But when it comes to a random game on isotropic against a level 0 it's clear to me that they atleast aren't familiar with the interface and I'll tell them how to play Bank without any regard to its impact on my ranking. He'd have solidly beat you with those late Bank's when in one case he could have bought Province, Province, Duchy instead of Province, Duchy.  It does however take a big individual to post it here and let us know that it happened and Genau can receive some recognition for playing excellently against such a high level player. If he'd have just used some of those earlier banks to build that engine faster.

Theoretically, the blank cards provided (due to the printing process) with your cards would substitute for any card that may get damaged. However, a designer and company so generous to allow for something like isotropic Dominion would surely never have a problem with you finding a way to transform those cards into whatever you'd like for strickly private use. But some manufacturer using the copyrighted material to create a few cards for one person's personal use is still breaking that copyright law. Is there, perhaps, some way to use a photo printer to print on those cards? That might be a path to research.

Are you saying you didn't have the decency to inform him after the first time he made the mistake?

Search online for someone who'd print you a euro-sized deck with your images on the front. Then use opaque card sleeves to hide the back.
Though I'm sure when RGG has finished releasing their expansions they will gladly allow everyone to use their copyrighted material however they wish.

Mercenary seems like a very powerful combo creator. I can forsee a short game with KC and Bridge/Masquerade.

I really dislike when somebody who is about to beat me says gg before the game officially ends, so I never do it. It doesn't matter to me who says gg first, as long as the game has officially been completed.

I GG fairly often before the game is over. Though, it had no relation to whether I'm winning or losing. However, if the game is tight I tend to wait till it's over because I don't want push them over the edge to ending the game if I think they are not sure of the status of the game (probably has no effect).

On the otherhand. I played this game last night http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20120327-195911-9b7673b0.html and I GG'd on turn 6 because the game ended at that point even though there was still a little business to take care of.

Game Reports / A fun light race to the finish

Hi, this is my first post here though I've lurked for a little while. Everything good has generally been said before I'd post on the subject.

I just play this game a few minute ago. Cache, Cellar, Chancellor, Counting House, Gardens, Nomad Camp, Philosopher's Stone, Potion, Quarry, Spice Merchant, and Village.

My initial reaction seeing this setup up was, 'OK, I'm going after garden. I want as many Caches as I can get as quickly as possible.' I opened with 4 so went for the +buys of Nomad Camp and hoped I'd get a 5 with my next hand. Instead, with 4 I bought a second Camp. I didn't stop until I finally got my 5 then bought Caches or Camps until the Caches were gone. From there my plan was to buy out Gardens. I wasn't alone though in my hunt for gardens. Though I did make out with the win despite only getting 2 of my coveted Caches.

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201203/04/game-20120304-155745-dbeda434.html

The most interesting part of the game was that in 13 rounds (52 player turns) we had depleted the copper pile to end the game. I could have ended on round 12 but opted for a duchy.

Any thoughts of a better strategy?
