Dominion General Discussion / Re: What cards do you ban and why?
« on: August 13, 2022, 11:18:34 pm »
Is Mindslaver Mastermind?

Mindslaver is a Magic: The Gathering card similar to Possession.

Correct.  In Magic I love playing the opponent's deck and trying to use the cards weirdly/poorly but it also skips their turn / gives you another (normal) turn which is already a very powerful effect and makes repeated Mindslaver unfun.

The Dominion version fixes this by making it an extra turn so they still get the normal turn.  (I've played that version in Magic also, a friend put Possession into one of his homebrew sets).  But now the problem is if their Dominion deck is good, you can often just ruin a turn or seven with bad draw/shuffle play even outside of bizarre interactions.  That is kind of a cool thing to do once in a while, but not often.

Banned: Lurker, Coin of the Realm, Graverobber, Rogue, Royal Carriage, Tomb, Keep.  Room for another landscape - had Basilica for a bit until it got fixed.  I don't like the reliability of Coin/Carriage and the other cards allow the game to move forwards less. Lurker is particularly annoying for also being swingy/powerful.  Could welcome Rogue back in if I needed the slot since it usually doesn't do that much.  Keep is just annoying to track.

Disliked: Possession, Villa, Procession, Cultist, Stonemason, Lost Arts, Pathfinding, Training.  Sad about possession - in some senses it and Mindslaver are my favourite cards in their games, Possession a much improved version - but in practice in modern Dominion there's just too much ability to make a mess with it.  The others are very explosive.  The Adventures tokens again lead to too much consistency and don't feel like they fit in to me.

Hinterlands/Prosperity arrived now.

Canada here too.  I generally order dominion stuff through my FLGS.  Seaside pack arrived for pickup around Jun 15, Prosperity/Hinterlands ordered (from their distributor, don't know which one) Jul 07 but not in yet.

Great to see the Basilica/Colonnade fixes.  The in-between versions seemed unfun.

Why do you see Clerk as so complicated?  Online has it in the core levels, and it seems fine.

missing that each other player topdecks a card from their hand, or forgetting it doesn't cost an action to play it from your initial hand.
the first part is just not reading the card, and the second is not using the brain.  You can already play a card that's in your hand at start of turn, you wouldn't need that ability!

IMO there's a big difference in visibility: You have to physically lift the Embargo token to buy a card from that pile, so it's almost impossible to miss.
But a set-aside card lying in an opponent's area together with other cards (Blockade, sometimes other durations) is hard to remember, as usually no other cards in an opponent's area effect you during your turn.
.

Maybe the way here is to put your Blockade by its target.  The Blockade player should remember to get their Blockade back and the purchasers will see the Blockade in effect.

In general Dominion leans towards putting stuff on the cards, not in the rulebook. For all games I like putting stuff on the cards, but sometimes something is very common and easy to remember and it will save a lot of space to put it in the rulebook. Or it may feel like it's really the game and not the card.

Ways are a good example of this.  Each could have said how to use them but that makes for a lot of distracting text, just as well to make people learn it the hard way once and then easily see what each Way does.

How do you feel about the balance between putting the rules on the components vs saving space/font size and sending people to the rulebook?  The specific one that surprised me recently was the Favours mat in Allies, it mentions you need one Ally with Liaisons but not that each player starts with a Favour.  Containing part but not all of the setup for this situation seems the worst of both worlds - I think it's easier to forget the favour than if there were no text on the mat.  Interested if you can think of other situations where you had to choose these sorts of things.

I assume that the problem that Pearl Diver and Navigator depicted real people has been solved?
And without murder?

I find Horse is very well-named for a card that shows up a lot: it creates a ton of humourous sentences when used with other things.   "I Exorcise my Horse", "my Horse will dig like a Mole", even simple things like Knights killing Horses, etc.  Was this a consideration at all?

I hope that happens to everybody who posts the following:

"Weird and complicated error/problem"
"Oh nevermind, fixed it"
[how they fixed it conveniently left blank]

I also basically can't take it with me anywhere that doesn't have nearby parking since it's so heavy.

Sometimes when I'm in the mood to play Dominion but not carry it I draw a few random kingdoms at home, and bring those in deckboxes rather than bringing the whole binder.  It's a little annoying putting them away afterwards as I sort by set, if your whole collection is alphabetical it's not so bad.

I like the variability, and as sonotoridesu mentioned the expansions generally don't mangle the game.  I like that when playing with less experienced players it's not hard to adjust the kingdom complexity either by not choosing certain sets, or removing drawn cards, and they only need to know how 10 cards work not how every card works.  There's generally low downtime, and non-political attacks.

I don't like the 4p game (randomness, short piles, kingmaking) and to a lesser extent 3p. I also don't like Adventures.  Cards that self-synergize can be annoying (I'd have liked Minion to be replaced in Intrigue 2, with a version that doesn't have the +$2 choice for a few reasons).  I don't like that the online version has no bots and can't generate random kingdoms as well as some phone or web solutions.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Playing with Black Market for Real
« on: September 17, 2017, 10:40:37 pm »
3 solutions we've used for the backs thing:

1) Use blank cards marked A, B, C etc and keep your blue-backed purchases set aside in order.
2) Decide that for this game Black Market will contain all of Hinterlands or something like that, and just pull out one of each normal card.
3) Just shuffle the blue-backs in.  Don't look at your deck while shuffling, but during the game if you happen to see one on top feel free to let it affect your Wishing Wells or any other choice.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: How many Events and Landmarks do you use?
« on: September 17, 2017, 01:47:57 pm »
Usually 0, at most 2, and often using "use only if Empires is in" (I dislike and do not own Adventures).  Though this sometimes leads to the landscapes being my 2 Empires cards (I generally require 2-3 cards from any set being used) which is not what I had in mind.

I kept Saboteur and Coppersmith for being the most interesting.  Using binders, I had room for 2 cards to be saved - though would have been better to keep 1 base 1 Intrigue.  I would like Woodcutter and Thief as well but not enough to stick them in some other set.

I don't like Adventures (too complex, and its events, Travellers, tavern mat, and Journeys don't feel like Dominion), but like Empires despite its complexity.  Will I like Nocturne?

Game Reports / Re: How to name Knights?

It has been fixed now, there's a textbox for naming cards when necessary.

Sadly still no Ace of Spades though, in the Black Market/Masquerade deck you'll need to struggle and remember a card you don't have.

Is it in your power to have the second edition entries merged with the first editions?  Second editions seem to be leading to a lot of balkanization for many games recently (Dominion, Agricola, Viticulture, etc.)
I do not understand this use of "balkanization." I don't have the ability to cause changes at BGG.

The communities, forums and such are divided.  If I want to look for a rules question for example, I need to search both the original and revised edition forums.

Do you pay attention to the BGG ranking of your games at all?  Dominion is currently #52, I think it was in the top 20 and maybe even #9 a few years ago.
