Wow, I'm always surprised at how there are always more elegant card designs that haven't been explored yet.

I have to say I was pretty confused by Maelstrom at first though.  I assumed "one of them" referred to one of the cards you trashed, like it was some kind of Raider variant, but that seemed really weird.  Eventually I figured it out.  Is it just me, or is the wording kind of ambiguous?

For what it's worth, I think we have pretty strong evidence that Nomad Camp is out: one of the new cards is called Nomads.  Not only would that be kind of confusing, but there's a precedent with Seaside: Pirate Ship was taken out, and we got a card that was just called Pirate.

Yeah of course Iím exaggerating. However how would you feel if your most favorite card also got replaced. Out of over hundreds of cards goons is one of my most favorite cards itís in my top 10. For it to be removed from dominion online and future physical copies is absolute drag for me. Not only that but my most hated card in the whole set gets to stay! Mint is in my top 10 most hated dominion cards. And as matter of fact it also happened to seaside. Embargo is in my top 25 most loved cards and lookout is in my top 10 most hated cards.  When I bought prosperity the there were very few cards I liked from the set to begin with. Goons was prosperity s one redeeming quality in my eyes. Without it itís a ruined expansion in my eyes. And yes Iím well aware that goons has its pros and cons. But for me the pros outweigh the cons. As for me I wasnít interested in an expansion with tons of different treasure cards. And now that it was removed, well it wonít be the same without goons my favorite militia variant. And Iím sure Iím not the only one on dominion online thatís going to miss it. Goodbye goons this is cruel world indeed. And not replacing mint is criminal.

There are several things in this post I find baffling, but the main one is: how can anyone hate Lookout?  To be honest, I've never played with it, but it has no interaction.  So if you hate it... just don't buy it?  Same with Mint, mostly, though I guess Mint can provide some explosive starts that you might feel are unfair or something.  Still feels weird to hate it.

And while I can empathize with not wanting Goons to get cut (to a degree), it's really hard to take this post seriously when you say the whole expansion is ruined now.

At first I was shocked by Goons being out, but I totally follow the logic of replacing it with Collection.  Also surprised that Hoard survived, I never liked that card, but at least changing it to "this turn" makes it a little better.

Also, I'm wondering about the upgrade pack.  I assume it will just contain the 9 new cards, but there are quite a few old cards that have functional changes that might be confusing to explain to people.  Is the general rule to just play the cards as written?

Now they can all be the best $5 ever.

Is this an in-joke?  I went back and read the OP and I can't figure out what this is in reference to.  Help please!

I really like the "flavor" of Tide Pools.  The cards come in, the cards come out.

Also, I'm really excited for this set (I've been holding off buying Seaside for years in anticipation of a 2E) and I don't want to complain too much, but I just wish Sea Witch was a bit more different than Basic Witch.  I know it's not strictly better because it can miss the shuffle, but it seems like such a small variation.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Dominion: Allies
« on: January 24, 2022, 01:19:15 am »
I had a bizarre dream last night in which I received a copy of Dominion: Allies and was trying to figure out how to play it.  In my dream, the "Allies" were minor effects kind of like the Boons (e.g. +1 Card), but I wasn't sure what caused them to trigger.  I couldn't find anything in the rules, so I asked this guy who was there, and he said, "Oh, you get the allies when nothing else in the game is happening.  So like, when you play a Horse, and then you return it to the Horse pile, that might be a good time to use an ally."

And I was like, "So there's no hard and fast rule, it's just whenever you want?"

And he was like, "Yeah, basically.  Just whenever there isn't anything else going on."

So I was obviously appalled that the notion of deterministic rules had been completely abandoned, and I tried harder to find further explanation of how the allies worked, but then because it was a dream everything just moved on and I forgot about it.

So anyway, I really hope that when this expansion comes out, all of the cards actually have rules about how they work!

Just had a game with Innovation and Tournament.  Tournament is a lot better when it's more of an event, you just have to wait until you have a Province in hand and then buy it!  My friend pulled off this combo a turn before I did and took Followers, and I at least had the Province to counter.  Unfortunately, I should not have countered, since having it on top of his deck was much better for him, given that it was his buy phase!

Rules Questions / Re: In which zone(s) does Sleigh's reaction work?
« on: July 30, 2020, 08:49:08 pm »
Okay, thanks everyone.  Common sense prevails, and I probably should have guessed it would be too confusing to work while in play.
More about this (with a link to even more).
Thanks, I missed this, I searched for "Sleigh" but only in the rules forum.

Rules Questions / In which zone(s) does Sleigh's reaction work?
« on: July 30, 2020, 03:57:48 pm »
I assumed at first Sleigh has to be in your hand for you to discard it and use its reaction ability.  But nothing I've found confirms this.  Its on-play effect even gains cards, which suggests that maybe you're intended to discard it in reaction to itself.

I looked at other reaction cards, and every other one states which zone to play/reveal it from, except Beggar, which up until Menagerie had no way of being in play when an opponent played an attack.  Does that mean you can now react with Beggar while it's in play in response to a Black Cat?

And Market Square, which has the closest wording, specifies that you have to discard it from your hand.  That seems to settle it, Sleigh works from in play (unless there's some rule that Reaction cards only work in your hand by default, in which case the wording is inconsistent).

Rules Questions / Re: Considering Trader errata
« on: May 07, 2020, 03:09:00 pm »
Is Trader the only effect in the game that triggers when you would do something?  (Similar to replacement effects in Magic?)  If so, I'm definitely in favor of getting rid of that wording.

I have a house rule that it's fine to look through your discard pile as long as you're not being annoying about it (no one I play with is that serious, so it's not a problem).  But I've seen some dominion championship matches online where the player spends a minute or so looking through the game log to deduce what's left in his deck, so it seems like the rule kind of backfires in that case.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Fleet vs Seize the Day
« on: March 25, 2020, 01:58:21 pm »
The thing about Fleet is it doesn't matter when you buy it, as long as you buy it at some point before the end of the game.  This is not true of Seize the Day, where timing it is super important, and so it would make sense for it to cost less.

Honestly, since you can only use it once per game, having it cost 0 would probably be fine.  The main challenge with it is figuring out when your deck in in peak shape, rather than just finding the best turn where you have an expendable $5 to throw at Fleet.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Way of the Mouse/Acting Troupe
« on: March 20, 2020, 12:35:59 pm »
You could already do this with Necromancer, or, as of the 2019 errata, Band of Misfits, but it's true this is the fastest way to do it.  I guess it's pretty easy to just not have Acting Troupe be your Way of the Mouse card, though.  It's at least easier to remember than making sure you don't put Acting Troupe in any kind of game with emulators.

I'm surprised it didn't get an errata like the other self-trashers.  Maybe you could argue that having near-unlimited actions isn't as degenerate as getting +$5 off Death Cart consistently?  I don't know, it still feels pretty game-breaking.

We all thought "unused action" was going to be some kind of Diadem variant, but it's actually closer to Young Witch?  Very tricky!

Like you mention, one issue with this is that cards don't specifically mention "replay." From this rule, how are you supposed to know what card "replays" a card vs one that just "plays" a card? Also, like with Vassal, it turns out that cards replay other cards only sometimes (i.e., Vassal does not "replay" a card every time you play it but only in certain circumstances). I don't have a good suggestion for this other than saying that if you're going to write a description for this, it would be good to have a clear definition for when a card is being "replayed."
But Scepter and Royal Carriage do indeed say "replay"!  I'm proposing that "replay" should have special meaning, and that something is only a replay if the card actually says "replay".  Vassal (along with its variants) doesn't use that keyword, and therefore can never cause a replay, even when it causes the same physical card to be played twice in one turn.  Intuitively, Vassal should never be responsible for tracking durations, and this seems like a good, consistent solution.

The real problem is that you can Bonfire durations.  Fortunately, there's no reason to do this in a real game almost ever.  You can fiddle while your durations burn, but that's on you.  I guess go get some sticky notes to keep track of the game state.

17
Scepter and Royal Carriage stay in play, even though they're not responsible for an Action being played the first time, only the second time. In the scenario in question, Vassal is responsible for playing the card a second time like those.
Is this what's important, though?  I always thought that "replay" was a special type of thing.  Both Scepter and Royal Carriage specifically say "replay", and they both only work on actions that haven't left play.  I don't see the original scenario as being a problem at all: yes, Vassal technically played a duration card for the second time, but it doesn't "replay" it, so Vassal would never stay in play.

Is the rule really that, if a card would play a certain physical duration card, and that physical duration card had already been played for any reason previously in the turn, then the first card stays in play for as long as that duration?  Can't the rule just apply to cards that either directly play a duration multiple times (e.g. Throne Room), or replay it?  Is there anything you lose by doing it that way?

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Dominion 2019 Errata and Rules Tweaks
« on: September 27, 2019, 12:32:54 pm »
It's possible for two copies of a card to have different abilities. This causes problems, the worst (extremely exotic) situation being, you play a card and don't actually know what it should do.
I'm curious what exactly this means and what the specific situation is that causes it to happen.  Is there some way to have two cards competing to apply becomes-a-copy effects to a single card?

Alms and Cemetery.  Cemetery is much better when you can keep all your coppers in your hand, and it's super easy to get a Ghost after the first shuffle.
